New South Wales biggest and most diverse folk festival is on again in January. For four days from January 12-15 the Bulli Showground will be home to the 27th annual Illawarra Folk Festival – with its sensational line-up of folk, world, acoustic, Celtic, bluegrass and gypsy music, as well as poetry, dances, workshops, parades and sessions.

Over 150 international, national and local acts with 600 performers will turn the showgrounds in the musical epicentre of NSW for four days. Among the acts appearing are Dougie Maclean (Scot), Peggy Seeger (USA), Cindy Harris (USA), Fred Coon and Bill Burke (USA), George Kamikawa & Noriko Tadano (Japan), Simon Bradley

Trio (UK), The Beez (Germany), Bernard Carney and David Hyams (WA), Gleny Rae Virus and her Tamworth Playboys, John Dengate, Judy Small (Vic), Skipping Girl Vinegar (Vic), Squeeze Box Boogaloo, Strelley, Sunas (Qld) and the Wheeze & Suck Band.

The autoharp will be the featured instrument in 2012, with performers travelling from the US to showcase its unique and wonderful qualities. The number of workshops will be doubled so patrons can learn to play this fascinating instrument.

If you haven’t been to the Illawarra Folk Festival before, January is the perfect time to get acquainted with this fabulous festival presented by the Illawarra Folk Club. The festival’s home

is Bulli Showground, nestled under the spectacular Illawarra escarpment and just a few minutes from Bulli Beach. The festival site is an all-weather venue with 12 covered stages, lots of onsite parking and camping.

Bulli is only an hour from Sydney and easily accessible by train, on one of the most spectacular coastal train journeys in Australia.

The Illawarra Folk Festival provides a perfect opportunity for Sydney-based travellers to come by train and experience the true spirit of Down Under, listen to great music from Australia and around the world, meet the locals and visit the stunning beaches of the region.

For those people who enjoy volunteering, it is not too late to apply and get a free season ticket and camping.

Early bird season ticket sales close on 22 December and you can still get a season camping ticket. The Illawarra Folk Festival has also arranged for a special festival accommodation package with the new Chifley Hotel at Wollongong.

Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW.

Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including a number of small boutique art galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. 'Historic Berrima readies itself for another great family day out for the Australia Day Celebrations 26 January 2012' says event organiser Col Gelling

The Australia Day Celebrations over the last 15 years, in historic Berrima, have grown to be one of the Southern Highlands premier tourist events.

Visitor numbers are in the thousands every year and on the increase. What’s the attraction? Probably the location; no other village in the Southern Highlands can lay claim to a more historic and picturesque backdrop in which to celebrate this day in our nation's calendar of public holidays.

With over 60-market stalls, local and interstate, and entertainment for all the family, grand parades, vintage cars, fire engine displays, fresh produce markets, and face painting, there is something for every one.

The atmosphere is one of a real Aussie family day out with a bit of patriotism

and pride in our country thrown in for good measure.

The official part of the day starts at the historic Berrima Court House Museum at 9.30 am, where young citizen and citizen of the year awards are given by the Mayor of the Shire.

This is followed by an address by the Australia Day Ambassador. After the awards ceremony it's off to enjoy the rest of the day to hunt for that allusive piece of craft, either in the market square or in the more traditional shops in Berrima.

The grand parade on Australia Day 2012 may prove to be the biggest ever. For the first time it will be opened up to any one person or group who wishes to join in. Contact Colin Gelling, Berrima Court House on 48771505.

This year in Kid's Corner, Jeff Patterson Amusements will have the dodgem cars, two jumping castles and two merry-go-rounds. Another favourite is

Malcolm Dowling's farmyard nursery where children can actually go into the compound, pat the animals. Kid's Corner also has swings and slippery dips and provides shade for all.

In this special area dedicated to the children, in the park opposite the main stage and stall area, there will also be clowns, vintage cars, police displays, steam engine displays & stagecoach rides. Plenty of food, ice creams and soft drinks will be on offer by the Rotary Club of the Berrima District all around the shade of this park.

For the adults it’s a chance to browse through historic Berrima and visit the Berrima Court House Museum. Walk back in time to our early colonial days as you walk through this amazing building with over 50 wax work models of a full court room scene.

Grab a bargain from an array of stalls from craft, homewares jewellery, paintings, books, nursery items, antiques from all over NSW and QLD, and fresh in-season fruit and vegetables.

In 2012 by popular request Harlequin Bush band who will be the main musical entertainment on the main stage throughout the day.

This year the organiser welcomes the Corrective Services Band once again as a part of the grand parade and ongoing shows throughout the day.

Berrima - a shoppers paradiseBerrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River.

The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s.

Moss Vale, the Shire CapitalMoss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. Well, now that Christmas is over, the visitors have gone home and all the entertaining is finished, more time can be spent in the garden where there are a number of jobs that can be done to get the garden through the latter part of Summer and into Autumn.

Summer brings with it, the hot drying winds that can cause damage to supple new growth that has grown on the plants over the spring/summer period. Some of this growth can become a bit tatty so a light prune will tidy them up and encourage new growth for Autumn. Don't cut plants back too hard as under storey shaded foliage could burn if exposed too quickly to the sun.

As mentioned in a previous issue, mulching is of the highest importance. Plants that are well mulched will continue growing well through the warmer months and the requirement for excessive watering will be eased. Using a soft mulch like sugar cane or lucerne will also have the added benefit of improving the structure and texture of the soil as it decomposes.

The cutting back or dead heading of perennials and roses can now be done and this in turn will encourage new growth and a repeat flowering in Autumn. Keep and eye out on roses for aphids and thrips. A spray with a systemic spray will keep them under control.

For those of you in the cooler areas like the Highlands, preparation for the Autumn vegetable gardens can start taking place. Vegetables should be grown quickly and to have them sweet and delicious, a soil rich in

animal manures with a dressing of lime is very important. Digging over the bed and incorporating these materials into the top 25cm or so and then let rest for a couple of weeks before planting will benefit the new plantings greatly.

Something not talked about that often are the lawns that surround our garden beds. It is important at this time of the year to raise the mowing height a couple of notches. The grass will survive a prolonged hot spell if not too short and low mown grasses only encourages shallow roots and uses more water.

Additionally along with all the good gardening practices mentioned already, we must be well aware of our general watering practices. A good deep watering of garden beds once a week will encourage deep root growth which in turn reduces the need for watering every second day or so.

Then everything is a winner.

Traditionally, wine growing in Australia took place in warmer regions where access to water for irrigation made growing grapes easier. More and more visitors to the Southern Highlands are discovering the many attractions of Robertson.

The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland. Robertson is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands, on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive.

There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Fitzroy Falls in Morton National Park offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, wildflowers, native animals, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are all good reasons for visitors to include this area in a tour of the Southern Highlands.

There are several walks to choose from such as a timber boardwalk to the falls, or for the more adventuresome a 7km walk into a rainforest gully.

The Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre is open seven days and provides a range of information on Morton National Park and other places to visit in the area. Tourist information, maps, interpretative displays, souvenirs, local craft, annual Parks Passes and Discovery Tours (prior booking required) are available at the Visitor Centre.

Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality.

The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest.

The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards.

By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise.

In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products.

St Saviour's Cathedral 1874 to 1884 - one of the finest white sandstone cathedrals in the Southern Hemisphere. The splendid bell-tower, soaring windows and massive stone work are the first impressions one has of the building. The Cathedral and Hall were

designed by Edmund T. Blackett at the peak of his career.

The Forster and Andrews organ contained 43 stops and 2252 pipes when installed but has been modified several times since. It is regarded as one of the best pipe organs in Australia and one of the most sought after by organists who wish to play it. Open 10am and 4pm. Ph: 4821 2206

Goulburn Historic Waterworks- a part of Australia's heritage The Goulburn Historic Waterworks is located on the banks of the Wollondilly River. The Waterworks has fully operational steam engines; the 1883 Appleby Bros. beam engine and the 1860s Hick Hargreaves corliss valve engine. The beam engine dates to the 1880s when it was installed to pump water for Goulburn.

The Waterworks is of national significance as it is the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location

Riversdale Historic Homestead– a historic 1830s Inn Riversdale was purchased in 1875 by Edward Twynam who later became Surveyor General of NSW. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1967 from the Twynam family and is set in beautiful flowering gardens. The Inn is furnished as a mid-19th century colonial cottage.

Riversdale is an ideal venue to just have a picnic or to book a function, a wedding or a christening.

Lake Illawarra

Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west.

The Wollongong coastline offers 17 sparkling surf beaches that are patrolled by lifesavers from September to April. Beaches are generally in easy walking distance from shops, hotels and clubs.

Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers.

Bald Hill Lookout, a magnificent platform looking south over Wollongong City, has outstanding views of the Illawarra and its escarpment. Watch hang gliders and para gliders or marvel at the spot where Lawrence Hargrave first took flight.

Experience the Grand Pacific Sea Bridge, 665 metres over-the-ocean, near Stanwell Park; spend some time exploring northern coastal villages while heading down the cliff hugging roads hanging above the ocean.

North of Wollongong the coastal villages are famous for their unspoilt beaches and rock pools, unique art and crafts, great fishing and surfing spots as well as many cafes and restaurants.

From those northern villages, the Grand Pacific Drive makes its way into the city of Wollongong. There you will find an array of shopping outlets, restaurants and cafes, golf courses, art galleries and more.
