High Attainers at
Haywood AcademyYEAR 10 PARENTS’ EVENING
WEDNESDAY 16TH MAY, 6:30PM
What is expected from a High Attainer?
HAs are expected to challenge
themselves in lessons beyond the
standard questions set by teachers
HAs are expected to make more levels of progress when setting
target ranges
HAs are expected to conduct
themselves as role models for the other students
HAs are expected to give their
best effort at every opportunity in
school
HAs are expected to have aspirations to continue their
education and develop as a
successful professional
Develop their own Growth Mindset
Growth Mindsets
A Growth Mindset is a belief that:
Intelligence can be developed
Challenges are to be embraced
There is no failure, only feedback
The success of others should inspire
you
Perseverance is a key to success
Effort leads to mastery
When is an obstacle really a challenge?
Most of life’s problems can be
viewed in one of two ways:
An obstacle – something stopping you
doing or being what you want
A challenge – something to be
overcome so that you can have or be
what you want
The choice is yours – you can
decide if it will stop you orchallenge you
What is a comfort zone?
What is your child’s comfort zone? Does it change depending on the
situation or activity?
Do people with a Growth Mindset
stay in their comfort zone, or do they
leave their comfort zone?
To embrace challenges, students (and adults!) need to leave their
comfort zone.
Intelligence
can be
developed
Embrace
challenges
See effort as
the path to
mastery
Learn from
criticism
Find lessons and
inspiration in the success of
others
Persist in the
face of
setbacks
Embrace
challenges
Challenges and comfort zones
Challenges and comfort zones
To grow and develop, we all need to
take up challenges, and challenges
involve doing things you either can’t
do yet or do not want to do.
Be brave!
Uni and comfort zones
It may seem scary now, but
remember, if your child goes
outside their comfort zone,
eventually their comfort zone
will get bigger.
Challenges and comfort zones
As with having a general Growth Mindset, don’t forget about the power
of YET.
I can’t do it… YET!
What can you as a parent do to foster
a Growth Mindset?
Praise the process. Pay attention and verbally praise children for skills that
don’t sound predetermined
Be a Growth Mindset Model
Encourage your child to forget taking the easy route (where little learning
is done) and instead embrace challenges
Remember Growth Mindset isn't just academic; it applies to many areas of
life (athletic, musical, social).
Discourage envy of peers, and talk to your child about what he or she can
learn from others who appear more successful

talent when talentdoesn’t work hard.
Post-16
As you will all be aware, Haywood caters
for students from Year 7 up to Year 13.
Haywood Sixth Form Academy has seen a
greater number of HAs applying to stay
on each year.
This September, we are going to welcome 70% of our current Y11 HA cohort back as
Y12s.
This is because the students recognise the
support and help that they get from staff
at Haywood, which continues at A level.
SUPPORT AT HSFA
At Haywood Sixth Form, students receive 1-1 academic mentoring:
Assess work load and time management
Consider current working grade and compare with aspirational targets
Set ambitious yet obtainable targets to improve performance
Discuss Higher Education and careers plans
Students also receive assistance with university applications and writing
personal statements
One of the biggest challenges that students will face is what to do post-18
It is the time when they take their own path – they will be adults, and the future isopen to them.
How can you help them to make the decisions that will affect the rest of their
lives?
Post-18
It may seem as though now is too soon to start thinking about university, but
Post-18
What can I do?
Remember, choices about university should be made by the students
themselves.
You can’t make the choice for them!
However, you can help your child by:
Taking them to open days or events
Discussing their options with them
Being a sounding board for their worries and concerns
Carrying out your own research on unis, courses, accommodation and Student
Finance
Some
numbers…
How do
they
choose?
IT MAKES SENSE TO
START THINKING
ABOUT IT NOW
The type of degree they want to study
The subject they want to study
Does your child want a year abroad or year in industry?
What are the graduate employability figures for the course/University they
are applying to?
Where are the jobs once they have graduated?
How competitive is the course?
Are they doing the right A levels to apply to a Russell Group University andthe course they are interested in?
Things to think about
Because others want them to go
Because their mates are going
Because they can’t think what else to do
Reasons students should NOT to go to uni
Because they enjoy studying
Because it’s required for the career they want
Because they’ll have more career choice
Because it will aid promotion prospects
Because of the unique experience it will give them
Reasons TO go to uni
