We’ re growing! As I write this le er, the singing, dancing, and laughter of 62 children at
Vaca on Bible school is wa ing down the hall. This is double the number of children from last year! In the last few weeks I have received no fica on of 10 families who are interested in membership. In fact, the sudden rise in interest has caused us to add a new members class early in the fall.
We’re on the move! The youth have had a busy summer. Led by our outstanding Youth Minister Nicole, our youth have travelled to Houston for the ELCA Na onal Youth Gathering and have been to Camp at Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center. In August the youth will have a beach day at Lake Geneva on August 3, have another retreat scheduled, and will take over the 10:30 worship on August 5 to share their summer experiences.
We’re planning! The staff and ministry teams are already busy planning for an exci ng Fall schedule of events. In addi on to our already first‐class Sunday School/Youth Program, we will also be offering Adult Educa on opportuni es and small group book clubs. We are also developing more opportuni es for fellowship and socializing, special musical offerings, chances for community service and outreach, and meaningful worship experiences, just to name a few.
How can you help? Our staff and volunteers are working hard to build community and fulfill our mission of “Living Christ’s Love.” If you are looking to re‐engage or try something new, now is the me. Here are some ways that you can be a part of this new and
exci ng me at Salem.

Tackle a Tab!” Dear friends, our church is busier than ever this summer! Even though it is summer break for the kids, there has been no vaca on in the ministry needs of this church and our community. As families take their well‐earned
vaca ons in the summer months, the church has entered lean financial me as a endance in services decreases. Our historical records show this happens every summer.
One of the ways we are addressing the temporary shor all in giving is to invite people to “Tackle a Tab.” Each weekend we will post a few bills in the narthex and ask members to consider picking up the tab on these essen al items. Simply pick a bill to sponsor, write a check to Salem Lutheran, and return the check and invoice in the envelope provided. These dona ons will be added to your giving record.
This year Salem welcomed 60 children to Vaca on Bible School. This is double the number of children who a ended last year! Children spent the week singing, praising God, listening to Bible stories, playing games, doing experiments, and so much more! What a blessing for Salem to be a part of these 60 children’s faith journey!
Vaca on Bible School could not have been the huge success it was without the over 40 amazing volunteers we had throughout the week! Special thanks to the sta on teachers, Carole Lichty, Heather Jackson, Rachel Sauber, Kathy Vickers, and Cassandra Wyruchowski who not only dedicated the week of Vaca on Bible School, but who also put in countless hours of work preparing for the week.
Thank you also to the sta on helpers, Ellie Larson, Dennis Sabin, Dan Jackson, Pastor Hank Milner, Lisa Hohlfeld, and Kellie Hohlfeld. We had an incredible group of middle and high school youth who led the children from sta on to sta on. These youth acted beyond their years to lead, love, and solve any problems that arose. These amazing crew leaders were Mel DuBois, Sydney DuBois, Megan Baker, Lily Baker, Anna Baker, Aiden Dorn, Cooper Dorn, Calvin Ostrye, Delilah Ostrye, Lindsay Kline, Finley Jackson, Cecelia Jackson, James Doss, and Kaylee Doss.
Our nursery crew of Rita Johnson, Jan Jackson, and Tracy Hopper allowed moms with small children to volunteer and know that their children were well cared for.
Our openings each morning were wri en by Carla Vana a and performed by puppeteers Kathy Cain, Luke Mar n, and Lindsay Kline. Special thanks to our sound tech Ken Reinhart who kept our media working all week and to Luke Mar n who captured the week in photos. Rita Johnson, Chris Lewis, and Cassandra Wyruchowski helped create our scene by cu ng out palm leafs and making snakes ahead of me.

For more informa on, contact Denise Rode, NIS diakonia Chair,
at [email protected] or 815/756‐8321 or 815/751‐8256.
Our decora on crew of Heather Jackson, Cecelia Jackson, Sarah Baker, Megan Baker, Lily Baker, Anna Baker, Rachel Sauber, Pastor Hank Milner, Kathy Vickers, Lindsay Kline, Mel DuBois, Sydney DuBois, Luke Mar n, and Chris Judkins transformed the Fellowship Hall into a deserted island by crea ng a hut, a boardwalk, a waterfall, a rescue ra , palm trees, and a jungle of vines!
Thank you to our closing leader Wendy Rhoads who with guest appearances from Kathy Cain, Pastor Preston, and Tracy Hooper wrapped up our days in a meaningful way.
A huge thank you to Wanda and Dennis Sabin who provided all the snacks for the week! Thanks also to Culvers who donated custard for the ice cream social as well as Sue Herrmann who donated extra ice cream when we reached 60 kids! Thanks also to Sue Herrmann and her team of Carole Lichty and Diane Lundbeck for organizing and running the ice cream social.
Finally last, but certainly not least, thank you to Salem. Thank you for your prayers and thank you for your dona ons of ice cream toppings, milk jugs, and water bo les.
Update/Prayer Invita on: Whether you’ve heard about the new Intersec ons Mission Outreach in Genoa or you’re hearing about it for the first me, I want to thank you for
your mission support through our synod and na onal church that enables someone like me to spend a few more hours a week developing a new faith community. Genoa is our neighbor to the north, and Jesus asks us to care for our neighbors, right?!
By August I’ll be launching a website for Intersec ons: www.genoaintersec ons.org. It will include a Sunday evening blog and weekly prayer focus and will invite prayer requests. There will also be a Facebook page: Genoa Intersec ons, and here’s where YOU come in!
I’ll invite you to LIKE the Intersec ons Facebook page and spread it on to your friends. I’ll invite you to visit the website, read the blog, and consider joining a group of people who agree to pray for the people of Genoa and the surrounding area as well as any specific prayer requests that come in through the website or Facebook. The weekly prayer focus can apply to whatever community you live in, so you can be praying for Genoa and your home community, and we’ll invite our friends on the web to do the same! Any new mission needs to be strengthened by prayer as well, for it will be the Holy Spirit working in people’s hearts to draw them to the Lord whether online or in a physical faith community, and we need to challenge ourselves to care about those beyond our immediate circle of friends, family, and co‐workers.
Be y Hampa and I both live in Genoa, and we’ve begun exploring space, looking for places to hold Bible study or seasonal worship. I’m thinking of studies and events that can also be offered at Salem. I ask your prayers for me as well that God will give me wisdom and insight as I begin to meet with community leaders to learn where we might make a difference as a people of faith.
Let me know if you’d like to be a prayer partner for just email deacon@genoaintersec ons.org

WHY To Give
The Bible men ons several benefits of giving: Giving glorifies God. It not only supplies the needs of others, but also causes the recipients to thank and glorify God (2 Corinthians 9:12‐13).
Giving Builds Faith. Sacrificial giving creates a greater dependence on the Lord and leads to a more in mate rela onship with Him. It is step of ac on that puts Him first and acknowledges His ownership of all that we have.
Giving Develops Character. Serving the needs of others through sharing what has been given to us makes us less selfish and covetous. Our character becomes more Christlike when we become other‐centered rather than self‐centered (Philipians 2:2‐3; 1 Timothy 6:18‐19).
Giving Results in God’s Blessings. Those who share abundantly in the lives of others will harvest the blessings of the Lord (2 Corinthians
9:6, 11; Philipians 4:17‐19). We cannot outgive God, because He promises that He will give back to us whatever we share with others (Proverbs
11:25; Deuteronomy 15:10; Acts 20:35).
Giving Is an Eternal Investment. While it is true that “You can’t take it with you,” you can send it on ahead (Ma hew 6:19‐21). If we set our heart on earthly things, we may make short‐range gains but sacrifice long‐range rewards. It is only what we give away that we truly keep (Luke 12:32‐34; 16:9; 1 Timothy 6:18‐19).
A tude is more important than amount. Giving is based on grace, not law. The New Testament provides two guidelines:
1. The first guideline is that each believer should give propor onately.
2. The second guideline is that believers should give sacrificially.
Live Free, Live Simply, Live Generously
Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.
(1 Thessalonians 5:11)
When I think service I think manual labor, so for our service day in Houston I went equipped with bug spray, work gloves, and old gym shoes. In fact, I generally don’t feel like I’ve served if I’m not covered in dirt and dripping sweat. So when we pulled into the high school parking lot I was a bit hesitant. But then we met Ms. Fletcher. Ms. Fletcher is a teacher for students who have been speaking English for less than a year. Many of Ms. Fletcher's students come to school hungry, many of her students come from broken homes, and one of them was even separated from both his parents when they were sent back to Mexico. Ms. Fletcher is more than a teacher to these kids. Ms. Fletcher tells her students every day that she loves them and that God loves them. Ms. Fletcher sneaks food into her student’s bags on Friday afternoon so they have something to eat over the weekend. We didn’t leave our service day dripping in sweat and covered in mud, but we left humbled and inspired by the work that God is doing through Ms. Fletcher.
This is just one of so many amazing experiences that our group had while we were at the National Youth Gathering. We invite you all to join us for 10:30 worship on Sunday, August 5th to hear more about our experiences.
We would not have had any of these amazing experiences if not for the support of our Salem family. We are truly grateful to each and every one of you for all of your support over the last year.

Rally Day September 9 at 9:45 – 10:30 in Fellowship Hall
Join us for brunch and sign-up for all Fall Programs and Ministry Teams.
As part of rally day, we will be taking part in “God’s work. Our hands.” After 10:30 worship in the Fellowship Hall, we have an opportunity to meet at the Walnut Grove Vocational Farm in Kirkland to assist in planting fall produce, harvesting foods, and more. You are not expected to spend the entire afternoon, if you can give an hour or two to help, that would be wonderful. There will also an activity of making health kits for LWR at the church if you are unable to travel to the farm. Sunday School registration forms are also located on our church website - https://ww.slcsycamore.org, click the learn more tab under Sunday School. Forms can be left in the Sunday School mail box or in the office. All children ages 3 thru 8th grade will meet from 9:15 – 10:15. All students will gather in the Fellowship Hall and then proceed to the class rooms with their teachers. We use a rotation format, meaning the kids experience the lesson using their Spark Bibles, drama, music, crafts, Bible skill games, cooking, and much more! Sunday, September 16 will be the start of our year. We are asking parents and kids to meet in Fellowship Hall at 9:15 for brief orientation and some fun with your kids. A packet will be available for parents to take home that has a calendar of lessons and special programs. Teachers are needed for of our Sunday School Team. Lessons are ready to go! Also, Sunday School is in need of someone that plays piano or any instrument to help lead music during the opening on Sunday Morning. Please contact Nicole Judkins, Jen Ferro, or Kathy Vickers if you have questions about volunteering or our programs.
