Free Youth Programs  

There are several Employment Ontario programs available to assist youth in 

obtaining employment.

Summer Employment – Youth  

If you are a student or the parent of a student, you should start thinking about 

summer employment now.   

 

Need assistance in developing a targeted résumé and/or cover letter for your 

summer job?

If you know a youth who has not previously worked and would benefit from 

assistance with removing barriers to employment, e.g. work boots, uniform, we 

can help.

Youth Employment Strategy  The Government of Canada is committed to helping young people through the Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The YES is designed to help youth facing barriers to employment acquire the 

information, skills, abilities and experience needed to successfully enter the 

labour market.

Pickering Welcome Centre  

Since 2006 the Pickering Welcome Centre has served hundreds of individuals arriving from 118 unique Countries, equaling 60.5% of the world’s 195 countries.

Canadian Auto Museum  

The Canadian Automotive Museum is currently developing multi‐lingual 

interpretation of all gallery spaces.  

  

The project aims to make Canadian automotive history more inviting to visitors of 

diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Multi‐lingual gallery guides will provide highlights of the museum’s gallery spaces, 

reaching new audiences and allowing all visitors to experience the museum’s 

unique collection.

Mentee to Mentor  

Manish Patel is a pharmacist in the Durham Region. He was once a mentee with the TRIEC Mentoring Partnership – a few years later he became a mentor. Pam (PWC Manager), Manish, Phoebe (TMP Coach) and Kadia (TMP Coach) 

  

Manish mentored two mentees who came to Canada with a pharmacy 

background. 

  

At TRIEC's annual Recognition Event, held January 2018, Manish was one of 

twenty‐nine Mentors who were honoured with a “Mentee to Mentor” certificate.  

  

Manish was unable to attend the event in Toronto and arrangements were made 

to present the award at the Pickering Welcome Centre.  

 

Over the past year DRUHC has facilitated more than 100 matches.

Major Job Losses  After two months of steady increases, employment fell by 88,000 in January. Full‐time employment was up by 49,000 while part‐time employment declined by 

137,000.

 EI Family Caregiver Benefit 

As of December 3, 2017, a new Family Caregiver Benefit is available to help families care for an adult who is critically ill or injured. The Family Caregiver Benefit will allow eligible caregivers to take up to 15 weeks 

off work to support or care for an adult family member.  

 

Eligible caregivers are family members or individuals that the critically ill or 

injured adult considers to be like family.

Incentive to Hire Youth  Employers that hire youth between January 1st and March 31st using E.O. services can receive a $1,000 retention incentive at 3-months and an additional $1,000 at 6-months.  

Thanks to the Ministry of Advanced Education & Skills Development (MAESD), the 

program is available through the Durham Region Unemployed Help Centre.  

 

We are accepting referrals for this program throughout March 2018.
