Whatishelpfulisrememberingthethreephasesoftraumarecovery:

1.Safety&stabilization

3.Reconnectionandintegrationbackintolife.

InHoustonrightnow,weareinbetweenphase1andphase2.

Ayoungerchild’s(age3andbelow)conceptofsafetyliesprimarilywithhis/hercaregivers.Olderchildrenlooktothings liketheirhomeenvironment,toys,aswellascaregiverstoestablishasenseofcontrolandsafety.Thisisgoodnewsintermsofhelpingchildrenprocessbeingdisplacedfromtheirhomesbutcanaddextraworkforparentsaswell.

Belowaresomepracticalstepsyoucantaketowardensuringyourchild'smentalstabilitythroughouttheprocessofrecovery.

Ifyou,astheparentcan:

1.Communicateyourdecisionstoyourchildren,

2.Helpthemtalkthroughtheirunderstandingandemotionsoftheexperience,

3.Talkwiththemthroughhowyouarekeepingthemsafeandtheactionsyouwill take ifcertainthreatsbecomereal,yourchildwillfeelconnectedandunderstoodthroughthechaos.

Reassureyourchildoftheirsafetyandofthefamily’sconnectednessthroughoutallthechaos.Thisneedsto be done verbally but also through your body language and actions. Take time to play and relaxthroughouttheday.Connectwithyourkidsandallowthemtoseeyousmilingwheneverpossible.

Takingsentimentaltoys,stuffedanimalsbasicallytransitionobjectswithyoumightseemtrivialbuttheseobjectscanbekeytohelpingyourchild feelsafeandconnected.Taketimetotalkabout theobjectandhelpthemconnecttoitwhentheyaretryingtosleep/wakinguptokeepthemconnectedandgroundedinthemidstofchaosandchange.

Keep routines asmuch as possible. Try to keep routine in the way you structure their day with play,learning,restingtime.Keepyourbedtimeroutinethesame:singthesongstheyknow,readthebooksorrecitethebookfromwhatyouremember.

Allowthemtotelltheirstoryofwhathappenedandhowitmadethemfeel.Thisisakeypartofprocessingthetraumaandallowingthemtostartthehealingprocess.

Andaboveall,keepcheckinginwithyourchildandseehowtheyaredoing.

Sometimesweforgetaboutourlittlestmembersofourfamiliesduringsurvivalmode.Iwanttoremindusthatwhilechildrenmightnothavethewordsyettoexpressallthedeepintenseemotionswefeelasadults,theirmindsareabsolutelycapableoffeelingthoseemotions.

Survivor’sGuilt

WhatisSurvivor’sGuilt?Survivor'sguilt(sometimesreferredtoas"survivorsyndrome")referstothepsychologicalconditionofsomeonewhowitnessedorwasinvolvedinatraumaticeventthatmayhaveharmedothers,butlefttheaffectedindividualvirtuallyunscathed.Theaffectedindividual,however,isimpactedbytheemotionalscarsthatresultedfromwitnessingthetraumaticevent.

CommonSymptomsmayinclude:

• Nightmares• Difficultysleeping• Flashbackstotheevent• Lossofmotivation• Irritability• Anxiety• Thoughtsaboutthemeaningoflife

CopingwithSurvivor’sGuilt:

Blessingscanbelikebabies,cominginallshapes,sizes,andcolors.SharleneandIwereblessedtohavenotflooded.Thewaternevercameoveroursidewalk.Weneverlostpower,water,televisionservice,orinternet.Wehadarefrigeratorfullofdeliciousfoodwhichwepreparedfresheachday.OurTuesday:wespenttheafternoonwatchingsomeofthechildrenfromdownthestreetworkonpuzzleswhiletheadultscasuallychattedandwonderedoutloudifwereallyneedfloodinsurance,sincewedidnotfloodinsuchamajorevent.

Bobby,myfather-in-law,experiencedadifferenttypeofblessing.Hishomeflooded.Again.Thisishisthirdtimetoflood:TropicalStormAllison,theTaxDayFlood,andHurricaneHarvey.Thistimewasdifferentthough.Thistimehewashome.ThewaterstartedcomingintohishouseMondaymorning.By1:00pmhehad3inchesinhishome,anditwasstillraining.Heraisedhisgaragedoortocheckontheweatherandthestreetandthevaninthedriveway,andhesawamanwalkinginthewaistdeepwater–pullingaboat.ThegoodSamaritanhaddrivenfromWallertoCypressthatmorning,bringinghisboattohelppeople.Hetookmyfather-in-lawtodryground,wherehecaughtaridetoashelteratMetropolitanBaptistChurch.Theygavehimamattress,ablanket,andapillow.HisTuesday:thecrewfromtheMcDonald’sacrossthestreetcametowork,cookedthemorning’sallotmentofbreakfast,deliveredittotheshelter,thenclosedtherestaurantandwenthome.Itwasagoodbreakfast.Heateitamongstrangers,withwhomhehadlittleincommon.Theywerealsoevacuees.OnWednesdayafternoon,thefloodwatershadrecededenoughforBobbygetaridebacktohishouse.Thewaterinhishomehadcrestedat6inches.Heturnedonhiselectricity,settheairconditionerat72degrees,gatheredafewbelongings,backedhisdrycaroutofhisgarageanddroveovertoourhouse.Somanyblessings.Idarethinkthatmyfather-in-law’sexperienceofGod’sblessing,love,andprovisionaredeeperthanmine.Thereisatendencytothinkthatthoseofuswhoaresparedhardshipare“moreblessed”thanthosewhoarenot.Wequestionourworthinessforsuchanhonorprofessing“Whyus,God?”Wethinkthatsomethingiswrongbecauseothershaveexperienced“morethantheirfairshareofpain”whileweremainrelativelycomfortable.Butwhatisreallywrongisourwayofthinking.Wehaveafaultytheologyofsuffering.Inreality,theblessingofprotectionisrathershallowwhencomparedtotheblessingofdeliverance.PerhapsGod’sloveandcomfortarefeltmoreinsufferingthaninsafety;moreinneedthaninplenty.Inhismessageyesterday,PastorGreggmentioned“Survivor’sGuilt”.Hesuggestedthatforthoseofusthathadsurvivedwithnoorminimaldamagethereisagreatresponsibility.Wemustuseourresourcesinhelpingthosewhohavenone.Thisgivingofourselvesisourplaceofdeeperblessing.Blessingscanbelikebabies,cominginallshapes,sizes,andcolors.Thoseofuswhodidnotexperiencegreatlossdonotallhavethesameabilitytohelp.Noteveryonecancutsheetrock,orspend6hoursonourfeetsortingclothes.Butwecanallsosomething.Asthepastorsays,weareeithergoing,giving,praying,ordisobedient.

AreportpublishedWednesday,December9,2009bytheUniversityofCaliforniaatSanDiegostatedthattheaverageAmericanconsumes34gigabytesofcontentand100,000wordsinasingleday.Ibelievethatduringnaturaldisastersthesenumbersgoup.Wehavebeeninundatedwithimages,sounds,andwordsfromthetelevision,internet,andradiochroniclingtheeventsunfoldingaroundus.Inadditiontothesheervolumeofthisinformationincreasing,thecontentoftheinformationchangesaswell.Theinformationbecomesmuchmoreemotional.Itisvirtuallyimpossibletonotbeaffectedbywhatwehear,see,andsmellhappeningallaroundus.Ourmindsandheartscannotescapeunaffectedbythisdeluge.IthasbeenoveraweeksinceHarveymadelandfall.IcancallhimHarveynowandnotHurricaneHarveybecauseIfeelthatweareonafirstnamebasis.Thishasbeenamuchmoreintimatestormforme-forus.However,Inthelast24hours,themediahasshiftedtheirprimaryfocusawayfromHarvey.Eventhoughtheirconversationhaschanged,thatdoesnotmeanthatourconversationshavechanged.OurmindsandemotionsarestillverymuchfocusedonHarveyandhiseffectsonourcommunities.Westillhavegroupsofvolunteersgoingintohomespullingoutcarpet,cuttingoffsheetrock,andthrowingoutformerlyvaluableitems.Attheendofthetaskthesehomesaredetoxified.Somearesprayedwithacombinationofbleachand/ormildewcidetokillthebacteriaandpreventmold.Othersrequiremoredrasticcleaningmeasures.Somehomeswillsimplybedestroyedintheinterestofpublichealth.Eachday,thevolunteersmustgohomeand“detox”themselves.Bynowmostoftheseworkershavedevelopedaroutine:bootsleftoutsidebythedoor,clothesimmediatelyintotheawaitingwasher,andbodyintoahotshower.Thesestepsarebothnecessaryandappreciatedattheendofahardday.Itisadisciplinethatisasrewardingasitislifeprotecting.Iwonderifwepaythesamelevelofattentiontodetoxingourthoughtsaswedotodetoxingourhomesandphysicalbodies?InRomans12:2,Paulstressestheimportanceofrenewingourmind.Paulunderstoodtheonslaughtofcarnaltoxicitytowhichweareexposedeveryday–andPauldidnothavethemulti-sensorymessagesofmodernmediawithwhichwemustcontend.Someoftheseworldlyinfluencedthoughtsneedtoleftoutside.HustonMcComb,onthecounselingcenterstaff,visualizesleavinghisworkcaresonthepushbarofthedoortothechurchashepressesittoopenthedooronhiswayhome.Someofourmemoriesandemotionsneedtobesanitizedbytherefiner’sfire–thereissomegoodwaitingtoberevealed.Someofwhatwehaveexperiencedjustneedstobedestroyed.Weleavethosebehindandmoveforward.Modernpsychologicalresearchindicatesthatitonlytakes60secondsofquietmeditationtoresetthemind.60seconds.1minute.SetasidesometimetodaytoclearyourmindfromeverythingbutGodandHisloveforyou.Detox.Reset.Rest.
