SPRING CITY ARTS & FRIENDS OF

HISTORIC SPRING CITY

As Kimberly Stewart approaches the end of her term on the city council, the Friends of Historic Spring City and Spring City Arts want to thank her for her service. Kimberly has been a great supporter of our non-profit organizations and a strong voice for positive interaction between community groups and the city government. She served for many years on the board of the Friends, and was a great volunteer, most recently developing our website and helping over many years to further the restoration of the Spring City Community Center. She has tirelessly fulfilled her assignments on the city council. We hope Kimberly remains actively involved with community issues.

SPRING CITY ARTS CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Spring City Arts is pleased to announce a Christmas Musical Program at 7:00 pm on Saturday, December 16, in the Spring City Arts Gallery on Main Street. The program will feature Dave and Carla Eskelsen, the talented singers/songwriters from Farmington, Utah who make up the performing duo know as the Eskeltones. They are local favorites, having performed several times previously in Spring City. You will definitely enjoy the program and visiting with the Eskelsens. Tickets will be $10. This will be a great addition to Spring City's holiday calendar.

SPORTS & RECREATION

As I reflect on the youth sports programs for the year 2017, I think of all the wonderful opportunities our youth have had to compete in the various programs

in our North Sanpete area. Our youth have represented our community well in all sports. They are always competitive and have successful seasons but more importantly, they have also demonstrated great sportsmanship and that's a credit to their coaches and you as parents. The coaches are the best you can find and I appreciate the time they spend coaching and teaching our youth. They are excellent role models, as well as great coaches, and I hope you parents will take the time to express your thanks to them for all the hours they dedicate to coaching.

We have finished the registration process for our Junior Jazz Basketball and games will begin the first of January. We are in the process of recruiting coaches now and organizing the teams so we hope they can begin practicing about the first of December. The kids are all excited and

anxious to get started. We wish them good luck and hope they all have winning seasons for 2018!!

The Indoor Youth Soccer registrations just started on November 22 and will run through December 29. The cost is $25.00 per person and this will be for youth grades 1-8. Sign ups can be completed at city hall. Registration forms are also available at the post office.

As I'm sure you are aware, I have resigned as the Sports Director effective January 1, 2018. The city has been advertising for my replacement and I believe they plan to conduct interviews the end of November so we hope they can get a replacement hired the first part of December. Be sure and stay tuned to our Facebook page "Spring City Sports and Recreation" for updates and announcements about the new director.

A BIG THANKS

to Cynthia DeGrey for her outstanding work in managing the Sports & Recreation. She has done a superior job at creating an environment of fun and good sportsmanship for our youth.

CHIEF’S CORNER

I have been amazed by the outpouring of support and help for the Fire Department. I sincerely thank you. To each person who

contributed and/or shopped, who took their time to organize and sort, those who quietly used

their time, and personal goods for the benefit of the Fire Department garage sale, thank you. Thank you especially to Don and Cassie Chambers who offered to spearhead and run a city wide garage and bake sale to raise money for equipment and training for the Fire Department. They were impressive. They, and others, put in hundreds of hours on behalf of our Department. They have started a 501C3, a non-profit organization to assist us in the future.

We currently have 15+ firefighters in Fire Academy, which is being taught by the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy of UVU. Our classes are held at the Ephraim Fire Department. Some weeks they are in class for 16 hours, on top of their full time jobs. Besides classroom time, there are many skills that are practiced. For example, in class they put on their bunker gear (boots, pants, coats helmets) along with their nomex hoods, face masks and air tanks. Time after time after time after time. Certification requires that they are able to become active, and properly dressed within one minute. One of our problems was that we were short on equipment. Yes, they can share face masks. That’s exciting until you realize the person you are sharing with

is sick. So, we found some old ones that are not certified or useable in a fire. But, can be used for training. That still left us short for equipment we need in a real fire. But, thanks to short on equipment we needed for a real fire. But, thanks to the garage sale, we now have funds to purchase the face masks we need. Fire equipment is expensive. My low bid is just under $400 for a face mask. The City Council has been very supportive but there is only so much budget. Now we have the funds to progress.

We have four women in the Department. One of them has tiny feet and we don’t have boots to fit her. Because of the garage and bake sale we do now. One firefighter needs larger pants because he is a tall guy. Now we can get them so he is outfitted properly. Some of the firefighters did not have proper structure firefighting gloves. These are important because the heat in structure fires can burn your hands in normal leather gloves. It is imperative that we protect the firefighters and give them every tool they need to fight fire and rescue those in need without injury to themselves.

We currently have four firefighters on the department that are certified EMT’s. Two are basic EMT’s and two are advanced. One firefighter is in EMT school now. One will start advanced EMT as soon as Fire School is over. Several of the firefighters have expressed the desire to also become EMT’s to better serve the community. It takes money and more schooling to accomplish this.

Additionally, several of the Firefighters want to become wildland firefighters. Again this requires more money,

more time, more equipment and more training. It will benefit the City.

I honestly can tell you that they are working their hearts out to provide the same level of service any community in the nation gets from a full time department. 80% of departments in the nation are volunteer and we want to be good at our job. I am extremely proud of each fire fighter. I hope you are too. Thank you for your donations. We did make thousands and thousands to help fund the equipment and training. For the immediate future we met our needs thanks to the good citizens of Spring City.

We are always looking for new people to join us. Please contact me if you are interested.

Have a great holiday season. Think safety. Be cautious in using your wood burning stove. Do not overload electrical circuits with Christmas lights. Avoid open flames around indoor trees. Lock your doors, turn on porch lights, they don’t cost that much. Be wise in how you drive during the winter season. We don’t want to lose any of you or see you hurt.
