Our practice is Mama Baby Services of Sanpete County and we plan to be located in the upstairs office area of the Spring City Community Center in the Old Schoolhouse at 45 South 100 East in Spring City. We are Marla Hicks and Katherine Bothwell, a mother- daughter team serving new mamas and babies in Sanpete County. Our practice focuses on providing quality postpartum care and lactation counseling to pregnant women and mothers who have recently given birth. Many mothers find themselves in need of ongoing, knowledgeable postpartum support in the days between their discharge from the hospital and the six-week visit with their obstetrician or family physician. Katherine Bothwell, L.C., P.D., is our professional lactation counselor. She recently moved to Spring City from Long Beach, California, where she served many mamas and babies as a postpartum doula and lactation counselor. Katherine is highly skilled in solving numerous breastfeeding challenges, including baby latch issues, milk supply problems, and identification of and referral for tongue and lip tie assessment and treatment. She has extensive knowledge of traditional Chinese postpartum practices and is trained in the Chinese method of placental encapsulation. Katherine is especially excited about establishing a free weekly nursing mothers’ group in Sanpete County where mothers can bring their babies and meet as a group for lactation information, baby weight checks, advice, support, and referral to other licensed care providers when necessary. Marla Hicks, RN-BC, CPM, LDEM is Sanpete County’s only state-licensed and nationally certified professional midwife. She has practiced midwifery for over forty years and maintains midwifery licensure with both the Utah Department of Occupational and Professional Licensing and the Medical Board of California. Marla is also a registered nurse and is board-certified in perinatal nursing, the professional specialty for high-risk mothers and babies under medical supervision. Marla provides up-to-date information, midwifery care, instruction, and reassurance to women. She is trained and licensed to assess both mothers and newborn infants and refers to physicians when necessary for evaluation and follow-up. Katherine and Marla have extensive knowledge in multiple areas of integrative and holistic health, as well as conventional medical treatments for mothers and babies. Continued on page 3. REPORT ON CITY

EVENTS By Yvonne Wright

QuartersforChristmasCelebration!

Our Quarters for Christmas Event (12/1/18) was again a magical event -- with all the help from KSL TV & Radio people who came to Spring City with games and prizes. Santa & Mrs. Claus arrived in our Fire Engine, because the snow storm the day before & the cold temps that morning prevented them from arriving on KSL Chopper 5. The total we raised in 2018 came up to $1770.36, which is $427 more than what we raised in 2017!!! You can continue to save up all your pocket change in a jar during 2019 & we will collect and donate it to KSL's Quarters for Christmas next December. Feel free to talk to Yvonne Wright about your feelings of having our 2019 Christmas Celebration being different, or if you want us to invite KSL back for a 3rd Christmas party time!

Christmas Light Pole Decorating Contest

We had great success for our First Annual Christmas Light Pole Decorating Contest on Main Street!!! The light poles really added to our holiday cheer! Tracy & Kent Kummer were such helpful organizers for this new event! The judges were from Canada, so their choices were totally fair. The winners were:

Jyll Okelbury & Jennifer Vanderwaal with their fun Directional Signs pole! The Fire Department won 2nd place and Allysia Dahl's Candy Cane pole was 3rd place! Tracy Kummer's Manger Scene pole came in 4th place and the City Office's Santa getting a Ticket was 5th place. If you won any of these and have not claimed your prize, go to the city office soon (before they eat it!)!!

Annual Christmas Ornament Fundraiser

Our Events fundraiser of Christmas ornaments sold from the Das Cafe tree was successful again this year. Wonderful ornaments exhibiting our great skills & artistic qualities were donated to be sold. THANKS!!!

DAUGHTERS OF UTAH PIONEERS

By Carla Nelson Dear Daughters of the Utah Pioneers we want to thank you for making 2018 a great year. We have shared special times this year. We will begin our new year January 7th at 11:00 am in the Community Center Ballroom. Looking forward to 2019.

HOPE ALL HAD A MERRY CHRISTMAS

REPORT ON COMMUNITY GROUPS

By Jane Hawkes WELLNESS/HEALTH

LECTURES & DISCUSSIONS Some of us in the community have started a Wellness/Health group which is meeting the FIRST MONDAY NIGHT OF EACH MONTH at 6 pm. We find that the former City Council room in the old city hall meets our needs, and we invite anyone who is interested to attend. Our recent guest speakers were Dr Dick Pooley in November on Thyroid function and Dr Dane Chapman in December on BEST SELF. Our format is a discussion after the presentation. The next presenter will be Jim Phillips concerning COLD (temperature) wounds, healing, and preventing. We have several more presenters signed up through May and invite anyone who would like to present in the future to contact Jane Hawkes 707-673-7548 or [email protected]. Wellness presentations in any category are welcome: emotional, physical, spiritual, mental, etc. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH If any of you are interested in being a part of our Neighborhood Watch system, we are in need of Block Captains to help out our Section Captains. Each block captain would be over about 10 homes. Each Section Captain has about 4-6 Block Captains. The greatest need is in the northern half of the town. Please contact Jane Hawkes, (Over-all captain of the Spring City Community Neighborhood Watch). 707-673-7548 or [email protected].

Happy New Year Reflecting on the Past Year; Looking Forward to the New

By Randal B. Thatcher

Ushering out an old year provides an opportunity for reflection and retrospection. It becomes a time for taking grateful stock of all those unique experiences and opportunities that avail themselves to us lucky denizens of Spring City, and of this lovely Sanpete Valley, and of all the many 'firsts' achieved during the past year for this relative newcomer... First time to ride a horse, and a snowmobile, and a 4-wheel ATV. First time to witness a "mutton-busting" competition, and to watch fearless young ladies compete in a barrel-race on horseback. First time to try rock-climbing in Maple Canyon and to hike to the top of our picturesque Horseshoe Mountain. First time to taste the meat of deer, elk and raccoon. (And I hope to enjoy eating two of those three again this year!) But, even better than these experiential 'firsts' that have come my way, has been the opportunity to meet so many singularly unique and amazing people who call this historic little town their home: Like the bona-fide cowboy, who lives just up the street, and who not only looks like he's straight off a Hollywood movie set, but has actually been an extra, and even a stunt-man, in any number of westerns filmed in Southern Utah. And then there are the many farmers, ranchers, craftspeople, teachers, artists, and those semi-retirees, who do such marvelous things with their extra time, like restore old homes, automobiles, motorbikes, and tractors; compose and perform their own music; write, sculpt, paint, build, and carve; and one who is teaching herself to play electric guitar. As I look ahead to this New Year, it is with eager expectation, not only because I know I am not finished with fun, experiential 'firsts,' but also because I anticipate new opportunities to meet even more of my fascinating Spring City neighbors. Like Will Rogers, who felt that "A stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet," I likewise feel that I still have so many friends in this town to whom I simply haven't been introduced. And, as we usher in this New Year, with a fresh dose of hope and optimism, I'm looking eagerly forward to meeting you!
