#6 Data Boy

#9 Western Society

#1 Eagle Keeper

#7 Uncle Howard

#6 DATA BOY was even on turf last time out but had an

okay midpack effort on this surface in his season opener.

If there is a pace duel up front he could come running in

the stretch. #9 WESTERN SOCIETY was not too far

beaten for place when running for $25,000 last time out.

Aside from the winner that was a questionable group for

the level; the class plunge is probably warranted. #1

EAGLE KEEPER had no apparent excuse when finishing

a well beaten fifth for $16,000 on Laurel turf last time out.

He has since been privately purchased and takes a

plunge in value for his synthetic debut. #7 UNCLE

HOWARD dueled on the lead then gave way to be third

20 days ago. He looks competitive once again.

Race 2

#4 Agnelli

#5 Ice Blue

#8 Tallestofthetall

#2 Cryptic Grip

#4 AGNELLI put blinkers on, dueled on the lead and gave

way to be fifth when dropping in for this price on July 31.

The blinkers come back off and he stretches to a route;

his lone route try was an okay fourth in the Kingarvie. #5

ICE BLUE was even when sprinting in his seasonal debut

but has since had two credible runs around two turns. His

speed figures are competitive with this group. #8

TALLESTOFTHETALL had decent form on the Turfway

synthetic this winter. His local debut came in the Turf

Endurance series which was simply too tough; this spot

should be more to his liking. #2 CRYPTIC GRIP dueled

on the lead and came up empty on turf five days ago. He

had an okay run around two turns on July 11; he drops

and class, the blinkers come off and if he’s good to go on

the quick turnaround he should fit very well here.

Race 3

#2 Bala Falls

#6 Double the Heart

#7 One More Drift

#4 The Reign Man

#2 BALA FALLS is one of several dropping in for $15,000

from the OS/$40,000 level in this field. He comes in off of

a disappointing effort in a race won by Red Hierarchy; he

is better than his 11-1-1-1 record suggests. #6 DOUBLE

THE HEART scored a good looking debut win for

$25,000, then came up empty when rising in class

second time out. He was about four lengths better than

Bala Falls last time out and now makes the same drop;

third-time starter looks very logical. #7 ONE MORE

DRIFT raced wide and finished evenly when kicking off

his season at the $25,000 level on July 31. With a better

trip he could certainly be a factor in his second start off of

the bench. #4 THE REIGN MAN was forwardly placed the

gave way to run fourth in his seasonal debut, but came

up completely empty when routing on July 11. He has

been off for six weeks and drops in from the OS/$40,000

level.

Race 4

#1 West Paw

#7 Pink Scribbles

#3 Egyptian Nights

#2 Good to Me

#1 WEST PAW stalked the lead and was able to prevail

when kicking off her season on June 13, then came up

flat when dueling between foes on turf 15 days later. She

has had a seven week freshening and should fit well with

a better trip. #7 PINK SCRIBBLES has had two decent

rallying thirds so far this season. It looks like there are

quite a few potential speed types to set things up for her.

#3 EGYPTIAN NIGHTS ran a huge effort with a tough trip

when third on June 28, then came up empty when

chasing the rapid Spanish Ballerina on July 30. She has

bounced back from poor efforts to win twice. #2 GOOD

TO ME returned from a seven month break with an okay

fourth place effort behind Interesting Times and Pink

Scribbles. She could improve with that start into her.

Race 5

#5 Not Orbinary

#3 Soexotic

#9 Make No Mistake

#1 Slydini

#5 NOT ORBINARY is two-for-two over this course since

returning from Oaklawn. This is a slightly tougher group

than either of the two she exits, but if she is able to work

out a trip again she should be right there. #3 SOEXOTIC

had to work for it but finished best when favoured to win a

$25,000 non-three on the main track 19 days ago. She

was third in a soft group of open $40,000 mares two

starts ago and now drops in for $15,000; should be a

factor. #9 MAKE NO MISTAKE made the lead and was

never really threatened when competing in the

Midsummer Handicap three weeks ago. The outside post

will be her biggest hurdle. #1 SLYDINI dueled on the lead

in a sprint 13 days ago and now gets out around two

turns. She is another who runs best on the front end; if

Page 2: Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson THE HEART scored a ... · 2020-08-21  · out a trip again she should be right there. #3 SOEXOTIC had to work for it but finished best when

something happens where Make No Mistake breaks

slowly this filly could upset the apple cart.

Race 6

#10 Unwavering

#4 Orazio

#8 Highriseinthepeg

#7 Range of Motion

#10 UNWAVERING did not run too badly in his local

debut on June 13 but came up empty on turf on July 5.

He drops in from the maiden special weight level; if he

can get clear on the early lead he may be tough to run

down. #4 ORAZIO was blocked at the top of the stretch

on August 2 but ran gamely to be third. He has been an

improved horse this year and figures to be competitive

again. #8 HIGHRISEINTHEPEG made a wide rally on

August 2 when finishing a well-beaten fourth, but it was a

better effort than the 49 Beyer indicates. He drops in for

$25,000 and ran well around two turns as a juvenile. #7

RANGE OF MOTION has been disappointing in two local

starts at the $40,000 level and now drops. Blinkers are

added; he is still lightly raced and has room to improve.

Race 7

#5 Wilburnrubber - Best Bet

#3 Clairessence

#4 Post to Post

#6 Power House

#7 WILBURNRUBBER tracked a hot pace before

flattening out in her seasonal debut sprinting on the main

track on July 19. Her sole win of 2019 came in a two turn

inner turf race where she was able to control the pace

and she could do just that in this spot. #3

CLAIRESSENCE was claimed for $10,000 13 days ago

when finishing a good third on the inner turf. She has run

well on the two week turnaround in the past and does not

look out of place despite the rise in class. #4 POST TO

POST had a three horse, cat-and-mouse pace battle fall

apart in front of her when winning her non-two for this

price on July 11. She does looks like the best horse in

this race but is a notorious hanger; how short of a price

do you want to take? #6 POWER HOUSE beat a soft

bunch of $15,000 non-threes to kick off her season on

July 23 and could certainly earn a share on the rise in

value.

Race 8

#3 Fright Night

#6 Lauderdale

#7 Flash of Silver

#1 Piccadilly Beau

#3 FRIGHT NIGHT rallied to be third when sprinting in his

local debut. He has had route success in Vancouver; he

has a positive reference running against

Doobiedoobiedoobie in Vancouver, who has also fared

well since coming to Toronto. #6 LAUDERDALE ran

second behind the class-dropping Kid’s Mischief on July

17, then had a very wide trip on the inner turf on August 7

and was even. With a better trip he should be a

contender. #7 FLASH OF SILVER dueled over the inner

turf and came up empty on July 24. He was able to

control the pace when winning over a soft group on June

19. #1 PICCADILLY BEAU was gaining steadily on Our

Zuma and just missed when kicking off his season

sprinting two weeks ago. He has done his best running

around two turns.

Race 9

#2 Forester’s Destiny

#6 Bode’s Maker

#9 Street Legal

#11 Captain Sidney

#4 Am Prepared

#2 FORESTER’S DESTINY dueled with Bode’s Maker,

put that foe away, then flattened out when finishing fourth

19 days ago. He should be able to get his preferred

inside-stalking trip today and figures to be tough on the

class drop. #6 BODE’S MAKER evened out after dueling

with the aforementioned Forester’s Destiny last time. He

was able to win against non-threes when controlling the

pace on the inner turf in his local debut; if he gets loose

he should be a big factor. #9 STREET LEGAL is not

much of a turf horse but did not run too badly when fourth

behind Glenville Gardens on July 10. Back-classy gelding

deserves a look despite an even run in the same August

2 race the top two selections exit. #11 CAPTAIN SIDNEY

has drawn a few bad posts this year and today is no

exception, but he has a long run into the turn to work out

a trip. He will likely be a big price and could earn a share

with some racing luck. #4 AM PREPARED was being

steadied on the inside down the backstretch, angled out

to be quite wide then finished on well to be fourth when

facing non-threes two weeks ago. Although he races out

of condition, he is worth a look as a longshot.
