Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, October 12 th 2019 Race 1 #1 Frac Attack #5 Breed’s Hill #2 Baddest Blues #8 Ice Blue #1 FRAC ATTACK added blinkers and tried a route for the first time in an off-turf Auction-restricted maiden race on September 15, failing to threaten in a race that produced Cup and Saucer winner Muskoka Gold. He now takes a steep drop in class. #5 BREED’S HILL set the pace but tired in the stretch when dropping in for $40,000 on September 21. He now steps down to the $25,000 level. #2 BADDEST BLUES has finished in midpack in both of his starts in sprint races. He tries a route for the first time and gets back in for the price he debuted at. #8 ICE BLUE showed speed but gave way in a race where the winner absolutely romped on October 2. He tries a route for this 10 day turnaround. Race 2 #8 Deed’s Legacy #7 Red Riot #5 Tallulah Darling #1 Soul Planet #8 DEED’S LEGACY has been better in her two turf starts this season than she has been on the synthetic. She decreases in value and will wear blinkers for the first time. #7 RED RIOT was empty when favoured for $25,000 in an off-turf event on September 1. Although her lone win was on the Tapeta she is probably a bit better on turf; note that she was a vet scratch for $7,500 on September 20. #5 TALLULAH DARLING came up empty with a wide trip in the same off-turf, September 15 race that Deed’s Legacy exits. She raced well on the turf last season and is capable of better than what she showed last time. #1 SOUL PLANET had an easy lead for $25,000 on September 1 but was run down at the wire, then ran a bit evenly in a somewhat suspect group of $40,000/Ontario Sired foes on September 22. She is capable over the turf. Race 3 #5 Yum Yum #4 Romantic Bliss #6 Midnight Brew #2 Hoxie #5 YUM YUM exits a runner up finish behind the massive class-dropping Gold Lace on Septemer 1. She attracted a $10,000 claim that day and will now drop in for $7,000 in her first start for the new barn. #4 ROMANTIC BLISS rallied from the back to be a well beaten second on the E. P. Taylor course on September 20. Her only poor races this season have come over the Fort Erie dirt. #6 MIDNIGHT BREW has typically been solely a sprinter, but was able to win when going around two turns on the Fort Erie turf on September 24. She’s a pretty consistent mare who may be more versatile than she gets credit for. #2 HOXIE has been having a very solid Presque Isle meet, finishing in the top two in each of her six starts there. She was a maiden winner over the Tampa turf this winter. Race 4 #8 Souper Shenanigan #3 Alicia’s Kid #7 Keen Artie #1 Mambointheforest #8 SOUPE SHENANIGAN broke his maiden as the pacesetter on the Tapeta in his most recent start, which came nearly five months ago. He returns as a gelding and drops in for $40,000. #3 ALICIA’S KID exits a credible fourth in which he was not far beaten for second in a first level allowance on Woodbine Mile day. He has taken well to the turf and gets back to face $40,000/Ontario Sired company. #7 KEEN ARTIE took off the blinkers and cut back to a sprint on September 18 when breaking his maiden. That was not the toughest group but he does not look out of place here. #1 MAMBOINTHEFOREST broke poorly and had a wide trip when catching a very solid group on September 21. He was able to break his maiden on the lead; the trip is probably everything for this horse. Race 5 #5 Faith Over Fear #3 Post to Post #4 Alternative View #7 Marwoods War #5 FAITH OVER FEAR ran well to be fourth over this course on debut. Second time out she was in an off-turf race where she was second behind the controlling pacesetter. It would not be surprising to see her continue to move forward. #3 POST TO POST exits a pair of very close runner up finishes. She tries consistently and obviously has a shot; she makes her first start in six weeks after being an off-turf scratch on September 11. #4 ALTERNATIVE VIEW was empty last time when racing over the synthetic for the first time. She has raced well over the turf in previous starts but take more money than she should in her first start off of a trainer change. #7 MARWOODS WAR can be slow to begin a rally but does typically offer good finishing interest. She was just a half-length behind Faith Over Fear last time out. Race 6 #1 Mine That Star #9 Viature #5 Celebratory #8 Another Breeze #1 MINE THAT STAR, the half-brother to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird as well as multiple Grade 1 winner Dullahan, was well touted when scheduled to debut on September 8 but was a vet scratch. We get the chance to see if the hype is real today. #9 VIATURE has raced evenly but not terribly in both starts to date. He returns as a gelding after six weeks off and will add blinkers. #5 CELEBRATORY engaged the pacesetters on the turn in his debut last month before giving way. He could move forward off of that; blinkers are added. #8 ANOTHER BEEZE debuted on Queen’s Plate day, breaking tardily and never truly getting involved. Half-brother to multiple Stakes-winner Gigantic Breeze returns as a gelding.

Half-brother to multiple Stakes-winner Gigantic Breeze returns as a gelding.

Race 7 #1 Admiralty Pier #6 Blind Ambition #3 Boreal Spirit #9 Yorkton #1 ADMIRALTY PIER dueled for the lead before tiring in the Woodbine Mile last month. He can be competitive in shorter sprints, doesn’t catch the toughest group here and may be effective following the abundance of speed in this race. #6 BLIND AMBITION kicked off his season with a second level allowance win over Reconfigure on September 6. He is a multiple Stakes-winner in New York and is arguably the one to beat. #3 BOREAL SPIRIT looks for his third consecutive win after narrowly holding on in a five furlong dash on August 23. If he somehow gets alone on the lead, which seems unlikely, he could be good enough to go all the way at a price. #9 YORKTON was able to make the lead and just held on in the Bold Venture last month. He nearly won this race last year; his form can go up and down and the post might hurt him.

Race 8 #2 Red Tea (GB) – Best Bet #8 Starship Jubilee #4 Si Que Es Buena (ARG) #1 Gaining (GB) #2 RED TEA (GB) was a Group 2 winner in Ireland two back before running a good third in a Group 1 in France on August 18. An interesting note is that she was able to beat males while carrying 137lbs in a 27-horse handicap back in May. #8 STARSHIP JUBILEE ran undoubtedly her best race of the season when going wire to wire in the Canadian last month. She is a truly consistent mare who is always worth strong consideration. #4 SI QUE ES BUENA (ARG) was able to win consecutive Stakes races over the Gulfstream turf this winter. She has been breezing steadily at Fair Hill in preparation for her first start since January. #1 GAINING (GB) has raced well in all four of her North American starts to date, exiting a good closing third at Kentucky Downs. French Group 3 winner figures to be coming strongly in the late stages.

Race 9 #1 Ziyad (GB) #4 Desert Encounter (IRE) #2 Pivoine (IRE) #6 Pumpkin Rumble #1 ZIYAD (GB) was a neck behind the talented mare Coronet in a Group 1 on June 30 before winning a Group 2 at Deauville on August 25. He appears to be one to beat. #4 DESERT ENCOUNTER (IRE), the defending champion of this race, is looking for his fourth consecutive win after taking three straight Group 3s in England. He was impressive when winning here last season and could certainly retain his title. #2 PIVOINE (IRE) was a length behind Desert Encounter in their most recent start at Newbury. He ran well in his only North American start this season when finishing fifth in the Arlington Million; this is probably not as tough an assignment. #6 PUMPKIN RUMBLE shipped to Parx last month where he was able to win a Pennsylvania-bred Stakes. Being the lone locally-based runner in this short field could be enough for him to find a way to get a piece.

Race 10 #1 Quality Heat #4 Egyptian Nights #6 Avie’s Samurai #2 Muskoka Dancer #1 QUALITY HEAT was just able to prevail when breaking her maiden over the E. P. Taylor on August 10, then ran a credible rallying third in the Woodbine Cares, a five furlong dash. She figures to be sitting off of the early pace. #4 EGYPTIAN NIGHTS drew the outside in the Woodbine Cares and was able to run a respectable fifth. She is one of several potential speed types in here. #6 AVIE’S SAMURAI, another exiting the Woodbine Cares, had a wide journey and ran well to be fourth in between my top two selections. That was her first start racing with an off-pace style and it showed potential for some versatility. #2 MUSKOKA DANCER was a maiden winner over the E. P. Taylor on July 20, then came up empty when racing over the yielding course in the Catch a Glimpse. She returns after nearly two months off.

Race 11 #9 Four Knights #4 King Ottokar #5 Jungle Warrior #1 Noble Hope #9 FOUR KNIGHTS finished evenly after setting the pace in an open $25,000 event over the Tapeta last time. Although he won over the synthetic in May, it was against much easier company and he had the significant winter fitness edge; he has been claimed back by previous connections and gets back to the grass. #4 KING OTTOKAR rallied and just missed when racing over the E. P. Taylor at this level on September 8. Lightly raced three-year old seems like an obvious contender here. #5 JUNGLE WARRIOR has not broke well in both of his starts since returning to Woodbine and has finished in midpack both times. There is probably more horse there than he is showing; perhaps the two turn trip could help him. #1 NOBLE HOPE finished third, a length behind King Ottokar on September 8, improving significantly as he went off Lasix after two disappointing efforts. He may be able to get a covered up, ground saving trip.

Race 12 #5 Magic Flute #7 Ann of Cleves #2 Queen’s Speed #8 Candy’s Dream #1 Sky Dragon #5 MAGIC FLUTE was well touted in her debut, in which she showed some speed before tiring in the stretch. That race has turned out to be a very productive one; she has had four months off. #7 ANN OF CLEVES was a well beaten fifth when debuting in a tough group on August 30. The winner came back to win the Mazarine (before being disqualified) and the runner up was a maiden winner in her next attempt. #2 QUEEN’S SPEED made a wide, circling move and closed to be third in her debut last month. If the pace is solid and she moves forward she is an obvious contender. #8 CANDY’S DREAM showed improvement last time, finishing second, almost a length ahead of Queen’s Speed. She is the most experienced runner in this group. #1 SKY DRAGON debuted on turf and was a very game fourth, digging in to be beaten less than a length for everything. Half-sister to multiple Graded Stakes-winner Dragon Bay should not be counted out.
