************************************************************************** Thoughts… Peggy & Ron Kratz, Chapter Directors 2016 … MOVERS AND SHAKERS… Who are they? … What did they do this past year?

As Treasurer, Jeff Kratz, handled Y’s financial records… recently completing our 2016 IRS & GWRRA financial reporting requirements. Our 2017 primary bills are GWRRA dues and our Gathering location rental. You might wonder why our Gatherings don’t have the usual Agenda items… GWRRA promotes Gatherings as fun get togethers to share and learn more about motorcycling… since we aren’t a “club”, reading of minutes and financials are set aside and are available at member request.

As Rider Educator, Doug Little provided at each Gathering this past year critical rider information, hands on guidance at trainings, rides… promotes and stirs interest in GWRRA’s Levels program… and has written monthly newsletter articles as well. Doug also shares monthly Motorist Awareness issues to help us stay fresh in our overall riding/driving experiences. He’s the best! GWRRA mandates that at least 50% of each event contains rider education. Y does.

Member Enhancement… what really is that? It’s a big job! Pam Kratz puts fun in our events, welcomes members, writes monthly newsletter articles, and maintains our member information. She arranges and communicates the monthly informal dinners where members get to chat over dinner and get to know each other better. Pam is critical to our Y existence. Here is info I gleaned from the GWRRA reports. During 2016, Y added 10 new members, mostly due to Pam’s recruiting efforts associated with Montgomeryville Cycle Center (MCC). 10 New Members! Wahoo!!! Pam also follows up with members whose dues are “in the 30 days to expiring” mode. This year Pam made 37 member contacts via email or phone. As a result of her efforts, 26 members renewed GWRRA membership. RENEWED 26!! Again, WAHOO!!

Thank you to Jane Youells, our spreader of “Sunshine” when our skies seem gray… sending out warm thoughtful wishes to members who were dealing with life’s difficult struggles.

Sponsor Liasons… Special thanks also go to Jeff and Pam for their efforts with Montgomeryville Cycle Center… refreshing our relationship with Bonnie and Bob Jones. We are thankful for the generous discount afforded to Y members. Again, WAHOO!!

No one would dispute the fantastic job Jeff did past year as Ride Coordinator and Road Captain. The enthusiastic emails on upcoming rides with all the needed details, the newsletter recaps, and the monthly reports to Doug. Since our chapter chartered, our geographical area has exploded. We pull members from well over 20 miles away. Jeff coordinated additional meeting locations to pick up members along the ride route. The places we’ve visited, the routes traveled, the “eats” and the ice cream… oh my, can’t wait to start 2017. Although Jeff is stepping out of the Coordinator position, he’ll be helping out in 2017. WAHOO to a job well done.

Communications… Our Life Line is the ability of our members to stay tuned in even when their lives take them in different directions. Our Newsletter editor, Joan Cope, takes all the articles and pictures submitted and puts them together like a puzzle fitting perfectly and looking great! Our newsletter gets distributed to our Y members and also throughout the District to all chapters. We are very proud of it! Also a key communication is our super Y website, created and continually updated by Dan Reisinger. Dan also gets our “news” up on the District website and writes articles for our newsletter. Talk about time commitments to Y projects… WAHOO!

Barbara Silverman, ACD, and Goodies/Storekeeper, is a behind the scenes worker… her efforts resulted in our new Y shirts, patches and chapter bars on sale now. She also maintains a supply of GWRRA goodies as well. Her “back seat” newsletter articles added a co-rider perspective. Mike Silverman, ACD, was instrumental in getting Y started, writing news articles and filling in as Road Captain and Sweep on rides. We appreciate his efforts on Y’s behalf. Mike and Barbara are stepping down from ACD this year… we thank them for their input and time!

Doug and Lee Little are our Couple of the Year Coordinators… their responsibility is to identify and honor a Y couple each year as our Couple of the Year… a couple who has done much for the chapter and promotes the GWRRA ideals. At our holiday luncheon, they announced our 2017 Couple of the Year, Bob and Elaine Williams and presented them with GWRRA engraved medallions, pins and embroidered vests displaying this honor. They will be eligible to participate in the selection process for District COY at the May District Rally. Please congratulate them. Also, we thank Jeff and Pam Kratz for representing Chapter Y during 2016 as our Couple of the Year. Their ongoing commitment to GWRRA ideals and Chapter Y involvement is outstanding… They are great ambassadors for Y.

Last but not least, Bob and Elaine Williams researched all area chapters and set up opportunities for our chapter to “visit” and the Roll for Dough program took off , going to chapters in PA, NJ and MD. This program emphasizes building friendships and having fun, which we did. Bob and Elaine also spearheaded mid-week rides and ice cream meets. Monthly newsletter articles kept the interest going. January visits are being planned.

Ron and I recently announced the appointment of our new Assistant Chapter Directors…Bob and Elaine Williams. As just mentioned, they have been supportive of Y in many ways since its chartering. They promote the GWRRA ideals and riding protocols. Celebrating 10 years with GWRRA this year, they are both Level III in the Rider Education program, have completed the Officer Certification Program and multiple other GWRRA seminars. Bob and Elaine’s travels have taken them through 34 states and 2 Canada provinces with well over 100,000 miles. We welcome their assistance and expertise to the Y Chapter Team. WE LOOK FORWARD TO ANOTHER GREAT YEAR… 2017!!!! Peggy and Ron Kratz Y CDs

From the Rider-Ed Coordinator… Doug Little, Chapter Educator Hello Chapter Y,

Lee and I hope everyone had a safe and happy new year. Although Lee and I were not able to attend the luncheon due to family commitments, it was great that so many of you could attend and enjoy the fellowship.

During this month, we are looking at the Rider Education Levels and having as many members as possible at Level I. The basic layout of the different levels is as follows: LEVEL I – SAFETY BY COMMITMENT – SAFE RIDER/CO-RIDER LEVEL II – SAFETY BY EDUCATION – TOUR RIDER/CO-RIDER EDUCATION LEVEL II – SAFETY BY PREPARDNESS – CERTIFIED TOUR RIDER/CO-RIDER LEVEL IV – MASTER TOUR RIDER/CO-RIDER

Levels I thru III have a small application cost for rider and co-rider and an associated patch with a safe miles pin in 5,000-mile increments. Level IV has a slightly higher application cost for rider and co-rider, and is the starting level in the Masters Recognition Program. However, everyone is asked to renew his or her status annually. I will again have the Rider Education Levels forms at the next gathering.

Within the Rider Education Levels Program there is a Safe Mileage Program and a High Mileage Program. The Safe Mileage Program is the amount of miles in 5,000-mile increments without an accident. If you have had an accident your miles start over from zero and accumulate from that date. The High Mileage Program is the total number of miles in 50,000-mile increments you have ridden.

This time of year is also the time to think about CPR Certification and annual renewal, Trailer Seminar and/or a How to Back-up Your Trailer Seminar, Parking Lot Practice Sessions and ERC Course. It is also a good time to think about reviewing the chapter training videos and CDs to enhance our riding perception.

The Chapter Staff and I are currently looking scheduling a GWRRA Certified Road Captains Course. Presented by Certified GWRRA Instructor(s). More to follow as the information becomes available.

As always, feel free to offer any ideas/topics you may want to be mentioned or discussed to either Peggy Kratz or myself at any time. All suggestions are welcomed. Till next month, Be safe ride safe.

MOTORIST AWARENESS…Doug Little, Motorist Awareness Coordinator

Lee and I hope everyone had a safe and happy new year.

It is that time of year to start thinking how we can raise awareness of the motorcycling community to the non-motorcycle riders. This can be accomplished in many ways. Through civic organizations and activities, motorcycle displays, general conversations, parades, etc. Family and friends can be a vast resource in this area.

A group of Gold Wings and their owners make a very significant impact on individuals who may not necessarily consider looking at a motorcycle by itself. Displaying our Gold Wings is the best way to strike up a conversation and hopefully bring to their attention the motorcycling community and thereby recognizing a motorcycle when out on the road.

If you would like to have a display of the gold wings or participate in an event. Feel free to contact Chapter Directors Peggy and Ron Kratz, or myself and we will be glad to assist in any way possible. Doug Little Chapter Y Motorist Awareness Coordinator

RIDE COMMITTEE MEETING UPDATE… Peggy and Ron Kratz

A group of Y members met at the Little’s home to begin the process of making our 2017 Ride Schedule. CD Kratzs and ACD Williams’ met prior to this meeting and put together a preliminary Chapter Y event schedule that included all Gathering dates, Informal Dinner dates, Roll for Dough visits… and possible PA Chapter, District, Region and National events. Having the calendar with these dates already noted helped determine what dates were available on our ride schedule. This Ride Schedule is still in the works.

Doug Little will be contacting District to set up a Road Captain Seminar prior to the start of our Ride season. This seminar will benefit all members, not just those who plan to lead a ride. On some rides, there has been enough riders to split into two groups, and a second Road Captain is needed unexpectedly. Knowing the responsibilities of the Road Captain will give you the confidence to step up and lead. We encourage our veteran RCs to come out and review procedures… and help others by offering their insight during discussions. Coop Lange has volunteered to give an overview of the Base Camp navigation program at his home. Many already expressed interest in attending. We’ll be setting it up in early spring… It is good for you to begin to familiarize yourself with your own Base Camp prior to this learning opportunity.

So you can mark your calendars and get vacation time… Overnight rides that are in the works…

PA District Rally… May 18-21… 14 Y members went last year… had so much fun attending seminars, riding the area, light show, banquet… some made return 2017 reservations while there. Our 2017 COY, Bob and Elaine Williams will be entering the selection process for District Couple of the Year. Plan to be there to cheer them on in their representation of Chapter Y and GWRRA.

Americade… June 5-10… last year a large number of Y members… travelling in small groups and individually… attended and enjoyed their time in New York at Americade and exploring the riding area. This year we’ve heard many will return.

Gettysburg Trip… June 17 & 18… Planning and Road Captain volunteer, Rich McFarland. This trip was done last year and members requested it be repeated for those who missed it. New riding routes will be incorporated. Rich’s knowledge of this area triggers new interest in the historic battle fought there.

PA Route 6… July 14-16… Planning and Road Captain volunteer, Bob Cox and Katie Green. This is a great scenic trip with various sight seeing stops along the way… Zippo Lighter Factory, PA oil wells, Wellsboro Grand Canyon. Riding this route repeatedly brings the “Oh Wow!” feeling as you come to another fantastic scenic overlook. Pennsylvania certainly has beautiful country area away from the crowded areas.

These are just some of the longer rides planned for those who need to get time off from work. There are many day rides and ice cream rides too. The Ride Committee will be meeting again to complete and finalize the 2017 Schedule. Let us know if there is a ride destination you’d like to have included. There’s still time.

Nova Scotia Trip… August 5-13… Planner and Road Captain volunteer: Rich McFarland. This trip has been in the works for a while and Rich has already made a lot of plans… and notified those who signed up to go.

Wing Ding in Texas… August 29-September 2… Dan Reisinger has already made his reservations. Anyone planning this trip can contact him to coordinate details.

We thank those who participated at the Ride meeting and also those who sent ideas. Also, thank you to those who volunteered to lead rides… without you; we’d be just “wingin’ it”.

From the Web Side… Dan Reisinger, Webmaster

Hello Chapter Y!

B-R-R-R-R; January is definitely upon us! The changing weather has been really wild this year. It has gone from 70 degrees in the middle of the week to below freezing on the weekends. Snow in the morning followed by sleet and then turning to rain – aaahhhhhhggggg LOL!

OK enough of the moaning and groaning (at least for a paragraph or two hahahaha)! The start of the year welcomed some changes to Chapter Y’s TEAM and Staff and the Couple of the YEAR. Congratulations to Bob and Elaine Willams for coming to help Peggy and Ron as the Assistant Chapter Directors. I know Peggy and Ron are going to appreciate the help and assistance. Bob and Elaine have been involved in the Chapter Staff area since the Chapter started in 2014 with the Roll for Dough scheduling and maintaining the chapter points. We didn’t come in first place but the meeting other GWRRA members is really what the Roll for Dough is about. I haven’t been able to attend all the functions that Bob and Elaine put together, but the ones I did attend were FUN! So Bob and Elaine are going to keep sharing the ride for the Roll for Dough and pitch in when needed to share the load with Peggy and Ron!

This is something Peggy and Ron have shared with the Chapter more than once about their experiences when they first joined GWRRA way back when. The sitting on the side lines watching the parade go by. I want to echo that sentiment too. Back in 2004 when I purchased my Gold Wing and started coming to the GWRRA gathering I would make it to the rides, come to the gatherings, and even attend an informal dinner every once in a while. It was fun and a good time. Then I was asked to just present a topic of general interest to the membership. I could talk on anything I felt like (and I usually don’t have a problem finding something to talk about LOL) and I had about 5 minutes to ramble on.

Usually my conversations centered on what experiences I had during the month. It could be a ride we went on, something I saw in my daily travels, or a news article or program that sparked my interest and I could do some research on to expand the topic. If you think five minutes is a really short period of time, I am sure Peggy would open the floor to you anytime, when you are in front of even your friends and family with eyes staring at you that five minutes is a 300 mile ride! But you want to know something, the next time I was at the head of the chapter the time went a little smoother and the five minutes sorta felt like a 100 mile ride. Oh I was still as nervous as the first time but no one had thrown tomatoes at me, they even clapped when I was done (maybe they clapped because I was done – but I’m taking the former and sticking to it!), and the next month they clapped again when I was done. So I found how much fun Sharing the Load could be because that is exactly what I had been invited to do. Share the load of our monthly gatherings so the Chapter Director, Assistant Chapter Director, Rider Educator, and other members of the TEAM could prepare for their presentations.

The really nice thing is when I joined in I found that I was not alone coming up with a subject every month. Peggy, who had become Ms. Public Relations, would come up with something she ran across just in case I was having a writer’s block moment. You see Peggy had started a few years’ earlier handling public relations for the GWRRA Chapter with publishing articles for several motorcycle magazines and newspapers, reporting on activities the GWRRA Chapter was involved in, and human interest stories.

Page 11: GWRRA Northeast Region B PA District Chapter Y ... January GWRRA-PA-Y newsletter.pdfJULY 28 - 30 – All Chapters East, Roxbury Holiness Camp, Orristown, PA Host: PA-C Around the Region

11

I had the opportunity to learn from that experience which seems to be the basics of my

character. There are times that I am asked how I learned my current profession and I simply say Self Taught. I have always had a thirst for learning new things and finding different ways that things don’t work. Because once they work you have to move on to more challenges that something doesn’t work LOL.

OK I am off to learn something new – I am sure I will find it will fill 5 minutes or more and will be FUN, FUN, FUN, FUN and probably I will get a little knowledge along the way!

WATCH THE SCAMS! ! ! ! It seems every holiday and/or, vacation break brings out the internet scammers. There are some precautions that everyone should take, not only during those periods but all year round. The I.R.S will NEVER call you for unpaid taxes. You would be surprised at how successful this ploy is on the very young and the very old. The young because of inexperience and the elderly because of concern about limited income and the effect on their retirement plans. You don’t even need to entertain those phone calls, simply hang up. I have never heard of the I.R.S. accepting prepaid cards for taxes. Microsoft will NEVER place a notice on your computer to call them because your computer is infected. This ploy is from malicious software that is intended to damage, disable, or gather information from your computer. By calling the 800 number that is given in the notice you are calling a scammer who is going to ask permission to access your computer to help in “curing” the infection they put on the computer. They can scan your computer in the background unbeknown to you while keeping you occupied explaining they have found HUNDREDS of infected files. Of course, they are installing those hundreds of files. This malicious software comes into the computer in a multitude of ways; an email saying your package has been sent, a pop-up ad that no matter what you do doesn’t want to close, a website that has been compromised, or a friend sharing a file they got (and it really didn’t come from THEM). Your best form of action is to TURN OFF your computer immediately with the power button. All systems for that last 10 – 15 years have been geared to shut down when the power button is held in for 7 – 8 seconds. Then power on your system and immediately run your anti-virus program. Not all of the files will be removed but you can get most of them quarantined. Then it is time to consult a professional to run utilities that pros have access to for removing the malicious programs. As much as I would like to win the Publisher Clearinghouse millions, they are not going to send an email or call you on the phone for any reason. They aren’t going to call to see if you’re going to be home – surprise makes the best “reality” TV. So when you see that email or phone call again it is time to delete the email or hang up the phone. In mentioning email – while you will usually see a phony company email address, by letting your mouse hoover over the name you will most times see not the company name but a completely alien domain address. The domain address is that part after the @ sign. For instance, Chapter Y’s domain address is gwrrapa-y.com. If you hoover over the email address for our emailed newsletter you will see it comes from gwrrapa-y.com. Which is a “good” domain address. Have a SAFE computing year. Dan Reisinger, Web Master.

Pennsylvania District Directors… Rick and Andi Riek Greetings everyone,

Andi and I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday season. Hope Santa was good to everyone and left lots of safety chrome for the wings. It’s hard to believe that 2016 is a memory. Where did the time go? It’s fun to look back at all the events we attended and the good times we had with all our GWRRA friends. Let’s hope that 2017 gives us a lot of good memories also.

Thank you to the chapter directors that completed the officer change paperwork for the upcoming year. I must say that the paperwork went rather smoothly this year. Maybe since most of us have done it a few times already we are finally getting the hang of it. We would also like to give a big WELCOME to the new chapter officers that have agreed to step up and take a leadership position. Thank you again for offering your services to your chapters. Just remember what I always say, a little enthusiasm and good humor goes a long way in keeping things moving in your chapter. Just learn and have fun. I don’t know of anyone ever having too many problems when you’re having a good time. If you ever need any help or have any questions, Andi and I, along with the district team, are available to help. Give us a call or email us anytime. Along with welcoming the new officers that are coming aboard we would like to take a minute and thank the current officers that are staying on as leaders of their chapters. It has been a pleasure to work with everyone this past year and we are looking forward to working with the new officers in the future.

January also is the time for end of year paperwork. Chapter Directors, along with your Chapter Treasurers, may want to look at the District website. National has made some changes to the forms used for the end of year paperwork. Please take some time now and read the instructions and maybe practice a little with the new spreadsheet. With the changes that the home office made, we hope it will make the paperwork easier for you to process. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to give us a call. We would rather spend some time going over any problems you have than having to send the paperwork back to you because it is wrong. Another thing that has changed is the IRS 990N reports. The IRS has a new company doing the filing. I was trying to log on to the website the other day and found that you need to create a new account. Please go to the district website and look over the new procedure when you have a chance. Take a minute and look at the instructions for filing the 990N with the IRS. It will make it easier when it comes time to file your IRS report. If you are a new incoming Chapter Director, you will need the EIN number to file the 990N for 2017. Make sure you get this information from the outgoing chapter director.

With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and everybody having a great time, I thought about how thankful I am for the district team’s assistance in running this district. Andi and I would like to take a minute and thank our district team for all the help, assistance, ideas and motivation they offer us in keeping the Pennsylvania District running the way it does. (Whether we ask for it or not sometimes, and we are completely ok with that.) If you are a chapter director or any officer in your chapter, you know how much time and effort it takes to keep everything running smoothly in your chapter. Just imagine trying to keep everything running in a district with 21 chapters. I am sure you have heard me say that the PA District team is the best in the country if not the world. Andi and I are blessed to have a team like this and truly believe this the best team

that any district director could ask for. Come January Andi and I will be starting our third and final year as District Directors. We look around and find it hard to believe how many friends we have made since joining this organization called the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. Our district team is among them. Andi and I, along with all the members of the Pennsylvania District, need to take a minute and thank your district team, Assistant District Directors, Treasurer, Membership Enhancement Coordinator, Couple of the Year Coordinators, our PA Couple of the Year, Goodies People, Educators, Assistant Educators, Trainers, Assistant Trainers, Newsletter Editor, Webmaster and Peds List Coordinator. You wouldn’t believe all the time, effort and expense they incur to make our District the best in the world.

We would like to thank everyone in the Pennsylvania District for your support. Andi and I wish our team and every member in the PA district a healthy and happy New Year. Without all of you there would not be a GWRRA family!
