GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - Grafenwoehr Training Area will celebrate its 100th anniversary on June 30, 2010. Therefore, the city of Grafenwoehr, the US Army’s Joint Multinational Training Command, the US Army Garrison Grafenwoehr, the Office of the German Military Representative and the Federal Forest Office Grafenwoehr will host a week of excieting events from June 27 to July 4, 2010.

The week of events will start on Sunday, June 27 with a concert in the city park and the opening of a special exhibition at the Culture – and Military Muse-um Grafenwoehr. The highlight of the

week will be the grand tattoo of the German Army and a festive retreat of the US Army on Wednesday, June 30 on the training area’s parade field.

The week of events will end with the city of Grafenwoehr’s citizens’ fest on July 3 and 4 and the US Army’s fes-tivities and fireworks celebrating the American Independence Day on July 4. Regensburg (lat. Castra Regina: camp at the Regen river – named after the Roman camp founded in 179 AD) is a non-county municipality in Eas-tern Bavarian. It is the capital of the Oberpfalz region and the seat of the Government of the Oberpfalz and the county commissioner of Regensburg County.

Since July 13, 2006 Regensburg’s old town with the Stadtamhof district is part of the UNESCO world heritage. In 2008, the city had 133.525 resi-dents and was the fourth largest city in Bavaria following Munich, Nürn-

berg and Augsburg. The city is the seat of the Roman-Catholic bishop of the diocese Regensburg, has three universities and is one of 23 Bavarian metropolitan areas.

Culture and SightSRegensburg has 1,500 buildings that are protected monuments. 984 of them form the historic center of the old town known as “Altstadt mit Stadtamhof,“ ((old Town with Stadtamhof ) which was named a UNESCO world heritage in 2006.

Regensburg has a theater that offers a program mix of opera, operetta, mu-sical, theater and ballet performances. The ensemble performs at various lo-cations around the city.

• The theater at Bismarck Square is the city theater with a main audito-rium and the Neuhaus Hall. Operas, operettas, musicals, theater and ballet performances are shown in the two-hundred year-old, three-tier, 519 seat theater. Symphony concerts of the Re-gensburg Philharmonic Orchestra are performed in the Neuhaus Hall.

• Originally, the Theater in the Velo-drome was used as an alternate location during the renovation of the theater but continues to be used for musical, ballet and theater performances. The Velodrome has room for 620 visitors.

• The Theater at Haidplatz is a so-called studio stage in the Thon-Dittmer-Palace with 138 seats that has been

used for more than 20 years. Literary and modern theater performances are mainly staged here.

• In the Turmtheater in the Goliath-haus theater performances, light co-medy, stand-up comedy, musical and theater productions for children are shown.

Additionally, there are a number of small theaters. Among them the puppet theater in the city park, the Regensburg Farmers‘ Theater at the Hubertushöhe restaurant, the STATT-Theater (come-dy theater), the University Theater and the Open Theater Regensburg.

MuSeuMS Regensburg offers a variety of museum operated by various owners. The city operates the Historic Museum located at the Dachauplatz next to the Mino-rite Church. The old town hall is the home of the Reichstagsmuseum. Its main attraction is the medieval torture chamber and the Reichssaal, where the permanent government assembly met. Other museums are the Kep-lergedächtnishaus (Kepler Memorial House) and the city gallery “Leerer Beutel“ which is also the home of the Regensburg Jazz Club. Newly added were the “document Neupfarrplatz“ about the synagogue and the former Jewish section of town.

The Regensburg diocese operated the museums of the diocese which are made up of the Domschatzmuseum, the Diözesanmuseum Obermünster and the museum St. Ulrich. The Free State of Bavaria operates a branch of the Bavarian National Museums in the museum at St. Emmeram Pala-ce, the cloister of St. Emmeram, the festive rooms and the princely

Other museums are the Art Forum Ostdeutsche Galerie, the Museum of Natural Sciences Eastern Bavaria, the reptiles‘ zoo in Burgweinting (see Burgweinting-Harting for more infor-mation), the Danube Shipping Muse-um at Trinity Church, the museum of the regional hospital, the Regensburg observatory as well as museum ope-rated by private owners such as the Brückturmmuseum, the clock museum, the golf museum, the postal museum and the Dinoraeum.

MuSiCRegensburg has a very active music scene. The Regensburger Domspatzen Choir is known around the world. Old music is celebrated every year with the “Days of Old Music “ festival. They combine historic ways of performing with concerts at historic locations in Regensburg. Regensburg also offers se-ries of classic concerts at international standard. Especially the Odeon Con-certs in the auditorium of the university take international orchestras like the London Philharmonic Orchestra or

famous soloists such as Anne-Sophie Mutter to Regensburg. Since 2003, the Regensburg Schlossfestspiele are hosted in July in the courtyard of the Thurn und Taxis Palace. They continue to gain more and more fame in Sou-thern Germany and more and more stars such as the famous tenor Rolando Villazon are part of the program.

Modern music, especially jazz, is per-formed in the summer during the an-nual Bavarian Jazz Weekend. More than 100 different bands, combos and soloists perform on a three-day-week-end in the summer at various locations around town. The jury of the Bavarian Jazz Institutes guarantees a high mu-sical standard. The Regensburg Days of School Theater take place during three weeks in June and approximately 20 school theaters show their plays. There is also the Open-Air-Cinema of the movie theaters in old town. Over a period of several weeks, current and classical movies and blockbusters from the previous years are shown.

regular eventSRegensburg’s cultural life offers vari-ous outstanding events that take place

regularly: twice a year – at the begin-ning of May and the end of August – Regensburg’s residents meet for their Volksfest, the so-called Regensburger Dult. The citizens’ fest in old town is hosted every two years on a three-day weekend in summer and regularly at-tracts more than 100,000 visitors.

The nine-day-long Danube Exhibition (DONA) with many special exhibi-tions is also hosted every two years at the end of March/beginning of Ap-ril. On the second weekend in July, knights, artists and musicians meet at the so-called Regensburger Specta-culum, a medieval market under the arches of the Steinerne Brücke Bridge on the Jahninsel Island. The local dia-lect festival MundArt is hosted every June in Stadtamhof.

The Christmas markets take place in December. A special attraction is the Christkindlmarkt. For 19 years, the Jahninselfest has been hosted in June and has become a youth culture festival with live music, artists‘ perfor-mances and a children program that is well-known throughout the Oberpfalz region.

The largest sports event in Regens-burg is the Regensburg Marathon on Sunday after Ascension Day. More than1,000 runners compete in the marathon and more than 3,000 run-ners in the half-marathon. It is one of the twenty largest city marathons in Germany. The Regensburg Triathlon is held on the second Sunday in August offering a short distance and a so-called everyman’s distance.

The Arber Bike Marathon takes more than 6,000 bikers on distances up to 250 kilometers from Regensburg into the Bayerischer Wald forest and back on the last Sunday in July.

“May Walhalla foster and strengthen the German mind! May all Germans, regardless of whatever tribe they be-long to, always feel that they have a common fatherland, a fatherland they can be proud of, and everybody may contribute to its glory as much as he can.“

Ludwig himself published a descrip-tion of “Walhalla‘s Fellows,“ which Heinrich Heine ridiculed as the “Wal-hall scrap of paper“ when he criticized that Luther was missing who had not been inducted into the Walhalla when it was opened. The bust of the refor-mer, whose translation of the Bible had shaped the German language, had already been completed in 1831, but was not inducted until 1847.

Ludwig resigned in the revolutionary year 1848 in favor of his son Maximili-an II. mainly because of his affair with Lola Montez. The opening ceremony had been held in a frugal manner and so were the inductions that followed and were personally attended by King Ludwig such as the last one he atten-ded in 1866 when Beethoven was in-ducted. During that year, his grandson Ludwig II. had already ascended the throne, the 80 year-old Ludwig had to witness how the German Fratricidal War put an end to the German Union after half-a-century.

He had already bequeathed the Wal-halla to “Germany, my great fatherland“ in 1862 but had added that if the Ger-man Union were to be dissolved, the ownership would go to Bavaria with the limitation that “if a union were to unite Germany again at a later time, the Walhalla would become the pro-perty of Germany again.“

This was never implemented. The Walhalla remained a property of the

kingdom and later the Free State of Bavaria.

Ludwig died in 1868, in-between the foundation of the North German Uni-on and the expansion of the North German Union into the German Reich as a result of the French war against the German states.

The Bavarian monarchy experienced a crisis because King Ludwig II. and King Otto I. were considered mentally ill and represented by Prince Regent Luitpold. The first new induction after the death of the founder took place 22 years later and honored Ludwig himself. “The thankful people“ honor “Ludwig, King of Bavaria“ with a large statue.

looking with aMazeMent One of the most famous and beauti-ful landmarks of Amberg is the ”town spectacles” - a water gate construc-tion spanning the Vils River, which formerly served to fortify the town and to connect the new castle to the armoury (”Zeughaus”). Next to it, the town wall encircling the ancient centre with a double fortification, its towers and gates, the Gothic town hall with its renaissance wing, mighty churches and many other historical buildings are characteristic of the unique image of the town.

Visit the most impressive buildings: the ”Alte Veste”, the new castle and the ”Zeughaus” (today, both buildings accommodate the rural district council offices), the ”Klösterl” and the ”Re-gierungskanzlei” (seat of the office of the government’s chancellor, where today the Regional Court is located). As the term “Regierungskanzlei” suggests, Amberg was the seat of the government of the ”Upper Palatinate” for many years. This era of the town on the Vils River, who owed its prosperity to ore-mining and the salt trade, ended in 1810. parks on the edge of the town cen-tre as well as many short time parking lots in the ”Amberger Ei”, which the inner town is called affectionately due to its oval - egg-like - shape, shortening routes and rendering shopping even more attractive. Moreover, the Amberg City Bus provides a well-functioning means of public transport.

reCreation and aCtivitieS Just outside the town gates, paths and green areas are ideally suited for walking. Directly behind the ”town spectacles”, lies the enormous acreage of the Land garden exhibition of 1996 which has been retained largely as a recreational area within immediate reach of the town.

Apart from this area south of the inner town, the so-called 3 herb meadow north of it (near the almost continuous circular town moat) and the ”Maria-hilfberg” with its pilgrimage church and its large forest, are available for recreation.

Here is where the legendary mountain festival takes place in late June, early July which, together with the town festival in June, the ”Dult” - a big fair at Whitsuntide and in the autumn - prove that the Amberg people know how to celebrate. Join them!

Many traditional festivals around Amberg also have their place on the calendar. Here you will come across a landscape ideal for rambling, between the Jura Mountains and the Upper Palatinate forest. And those who prefer biking to hiking will appreciate the well-developed network of cycle paths, including the Five-River Cycle-Path which connects Amberg to Nuremberg and Regensburg.

WINDISCHESCHENBACH, Germany - The 1000-year-old city of Windischeschenbach with its 5,300 residents is idyllically located at the entrance to the wild and romantic Waldnaab Valley. In the middle of the 10th century, during the reign of Otto the Great, the tribe of the Bavarians reached the area around Windischeschenbach and were the first to settle there.

Until 1424, Windischeschenbach was called Eschenbach. The addition „Win-disch,“ which means located towards Wendenland (Bohemia), was added to be able to distinguish the city from the city of Eschenbach, located in the

Western part of the Oberpfalz region. In 1952, during the celebration of the town’s 1000th anniversary, the market city of Eschenbach received its city rights.

wild and roMantiC waldnaab valleyHikers, bikers and everybody who is a friend of nature can enjoy the pristine nature of the nature protection area Waldnaab Valley on 130 kilometers of well-developed hiking – and biking paths. Here, you can find a piece of untouched nature far away from the noise of the roads.

Over the course of millions of years, nature has formed rock formations, granite blocks and a unity made up of forest, water and a vital animal world

that is fascinating. It is not surprising that the award winning hiking trail “Goldsteig“ runs directly through the Waldnaab Valley.

Capital of zoigl beerOne of the most special experiences here is a visit to one of the many cozy Zoigl beer guest houses. Zoigl is not brewed in a regular brewery but in a “communal brewery“ which is ow-ned and maintained by the citizens that have the right to brew Zoigl. The Zoigl brewers alternate in selling this beer specialty from Friday to Monday, some until Tuesday, in their Zoigl guest houses.

A “Zoigl star,“ mostly a hexagonal star made of wood is hanging from the dormer window to let everybody know

that Zoigl is served. With 14 Zoigl guest houses, Windischeschenbach with its subdivision of Neuhaus is the “capital of Zoigl beer.“ Guests and local residents meet here in an unsurpassed cozy atmosphere to talk, make music, or to simply enjoy themselves while drinking “half of a Zoigl“ and eating a hearty snack made of local specialties.

Culture- and vaCation town windiSCheSChenbaChCulturally, Windischeschenbach has a lot to offer. Whether it is the Futura 87 stage that famous stand-up comedians often use for a sneak-preview of their new program, or the Schafferhof in the subdivision of Neuhaus. GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - Missing your football kick? Middle of spring and the nearest game in sight is August on TV? Well, the Grafen-woehr Griffins football team can help.

„We see it as a chance to introduce the ultimate team sport to the German populace, build new friendships with our American neighbors and create a sporting atmosphere for the whole family” says Marco Weissenborn, presi-dent of the American Football Depart-ment of the Grafenwoehr Sports Club.

The Grafenwöhr team, called the Grif-fins, was named after the legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The lion is traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of the birds.

The griffin embodies and represents for them the domination of the football field, both on the ground and in the air.

The Griffins, located just minutes away from the Grafenwoehr post, right by the outdoor swimming pool and Jalisco’s Mexican Food restaurant, offer opportunities for everyone.

There are volunteer positions in eve-ry area of the sport; from players and coaches, equipment managers and even cheerleaders. “We offer something for everyone and every skill level if not, we can find something,“ says Weissenborn.

„It is important to build up the sport of American football in the Oberpfalz. Too many people only watch football on TV and miss out on everything that goes on around the game and the electricity of the game itself. We want to bring that experience to the public.

Go out and have fun with your fami-ly, tailgating before a game and then watch your (temporary) hometown team play in the afternoon. Stadium announcer, grilled food, cold beer, soda pop for the kids, face painting, cheering for your team and after game parties at the team bar (Yanni’s Bar in Gra-fenwoehr).

“That is a part of the American culture that we want to introduce to the Ger-mans” says Coach James D. Miller, who together with Coaches Brian Jansma and Ronnie Shakir are helping build the Griffins up, around the philosophy of family, discipline, athleticism and teamwork.

“Brian (Coach Jansma) had the idea to form a new team in Grafenwoehr late last summer 2009. We had just finished coaching another team in the area and were looking for something new.

Brian works on post and said that the field and facilities were first class. All of us were looking for a chance to start a program that had our signature on it, so we got in contact with the SV Grafenwöhr and presented our idea to them. They liked it and gave us the ok to start it up.”

Structured differently then the leagues in America, but played under NCAA

rules, the teams in Bavaria are broken down into four divisions, each higher than the other: (lowest to highest) Auf-bau, Verbands, Bayern and Regional. Then there are two national divisions:

2nd German and 1st German Bundes-liga. The Aufbau Division (where the Griffins start this season) is for newly formed teams, with special adminis-trative rules to assist new teams and make it easier for them to start and become established.

Starting at the Verband Division, the 1st place team at the end of the season advances into the next division. In the Bayern Division and higher, the 1st place team advances and the last place team drops down into the lower division.

The Griffins are actively searching for players (both American and German) as well as position coaches (again, American and German), that are in-terested in taking part and willing to commit to the building of a long-term program.

”It is not too late to join us, our season starts on July 4th, so there is plenty of time to get into practice, meet new friends and learn the system that our coaches are installing” says Weissen-born.

ESCHENBACH, Germany - It is a sunny Sunday afternoon. A family is barbecuing in their backyard and the air is filled with a scent of grilled steaks. Suddenly the father of the family, an American soldier based in Grafenwoehr, cries out in pain because his stomach hurts terribly.

How typical for this to happen on a Sunday when the U.S. Health Clinic on base is closed. In desperate need of me-dical assistance, he calls 911. Once the ambulance - dispatched from Eschen-bach- is alerted, help generally arrives at the scene within a few minutes.

At first, the patient is taken to the US Health Clinic in Grafenwoehr. The medical services provided there, howe-ver, do not include in-patient treatment because the establishment of such a

service would be extremely expensive. Moreover, there are fine clinics in the near vicinity. That is why the clinic on the US army base is only open until 4 pm. When a US Health Clinic physi-cian diagnoses a serious illness which cannot be treated there, the patient is taken either to the hospital in Eschen-bach or Weiden.

Eschenbach hospital, for instance, is well-prepared for American patients. At least 15% of its patients are Ameri-cans. Therefore, the hospital has taken many steps to facilitate the stay and treatment of American patients. The whole staff and doctors in particu-lar speak very English very well and nurses were trained to understand the patients’ needs.

All signs were translated into English and the two hospitals in Grafenwoehr and Eschenbach work together very closely. That makes it possible for Ame-

rican patients to leave the clinic earlier. Because of that, the average patient on the station for internal medicine is treated in hospital for only 2.5 days. Above all, this is a great advantage for a patient who is no member of the army and without social insurance because this patient has to pay the relatively low costs on his own. In contrast to that all American soldiers are insured and do not have to pay on their own. Their insurance is called Tricare and it is funded by the U.S. Army.

Most reasons for a committal of Ame-rican patients are infections, for examp-le pneumonia, explains Doctor Peter Ernst, head physician of Eschenbach Hospital. He adds stomach-flu and chest-pain due to cardiac problems as frequent cases. Doctor Peter Ernst asserts that the nurses always try to make the patient’s stay as comfortable as possible. According to an American soldier staying at Eschenbach Hospital

the local medical care is outstanding and the whole staff is doing a great job. The soldier stresses the nice atmosphere in Eschenbach Hospital. He says it is very luxurious compared to Ameri-can military hospitals. As examples he names his own room with a huge balcony. Eventually he also adds that he is allowed to drink a beer in Eschen-bach, something that is forbidden in American military hospitals.

When asked whether the hospital could change anything to make his stay even more comfortable, the Ser-geant suggested that he could do with a bit more dinner and that he could only watch CNN. He would like to have more TV channels to choose the one he is most interested in. But ge-nerally speaking he is truly content with Eschenbach Hospital because he recovers really fast from his illness with a staff taking care of every need.

HIRSCHAU, Germany - The lei-sure paradise Monte Kaolino has opened its doors to the public again. The adventure sports culture at the „White Mountain“ enjoys increasing popularity.

Monte Kaolino is a center for sand sports. More and more people are tra-velling long ways to climb the huge mountain - either on foot to enjoy the beautiful view on top or by lift to have fun with skis, sandboards or BigFoots. It’s also possible to go down on a “Zip-felbob”, a kind of sledge for one person. The Ski Club Monte Kaolino rents the necessary equipment. The mountain provides sportsmen with a challen-ging downhill slope of 200 meters in length. For some, it has developed into a competitive sport. Therefore, there are some major events at the Monte Kao-lino, such as the sandboard world cup each year. In fact, the Monte Kaolino was originally a waste product. It was

created by the accumulation of white quartz sand. This was formed in large quantities when mining for industrial minerals such as kaolin and feldspar, which were important for the local porcelain production. About 32 mil-

lion tons of quartz sand (equivalent to approximately 1.3 million truck loads) were needed to allow the mountain to rise about 120 meters into the air. Since the 1950s, skiers have discovered the white sand for fun use. You can‘t do

only sand sports at the leisure paradise Monte Kaolino. Anyone who wants to can cool off in the adjacent outdoor pool, which is called “Dünenbad”. This newly created pool gives visitors a special Caribbean beach feeling. Or perhaps you are looking forward to a ride in the „Monte Coaster“, a sum-mer toboggan run, which has been in operation since 2008.

Quite interesting is also the nearby forest ropes course, which is a real chal-lenge not only for children but also for adults because there are different difficulty levels to master.

Bavaria calls itself the home country of beer. But only a few people know that the real origin of the drink was in the north of Germany.

Already in 1200, North-German bre-weries exported masses of beer to Flan-ders and Scandinavia from Bremen harbor. The fact that brewing beer was mainly a North-German business until the 16th century is relatively unknown.

The Hanseatic cities became wealthy partly by trading but also partly by brewing. In Hamburg, for example, 600 breweries had already existed at the time.

In contrast to the northern part of Ger-many, brewing of beer was not widely spread in Bavaria until the Thirty Years’ War. Only few citizens, who owned the right of brewing, dabbled in it. At the beginning, however, the Bavarian made the brew only for household use and far from the German purity law

(“Reinheitsgebot of 1516”). Therefore beer failed to leave its mark early in southern regions- especially in Bavaria. The territorial differences are ascri-bed to the historical background. In the Middle Ages the town- and guild privilege was established law in North-Germany.

That is why beer was seen as civil nourishment and was part of the civil liberties. In contrast to that, the federal state law was spread in the South. Here the territorial lord had influence over

all by-laws. Therefore the northern beer quality was unmatched thanks to the strict guild system. Later, the Bavarians caught up with the North-Germans by passing a beer- and brew law.

Until the foundation of the “Hof-bräuhaus” in Munich, the beer for the Bavarian Official Househould was expensively imported from the Han-seatic cities. The world’s most promi-nent beer-brewer is still a Prussian: Frederick the Great. He was a trained brewer as each member of the Ho-

henzollern family had to learn a civil profession. Thus the number of the famous regulars’ tables mushroomed.

The leading thought was: “what is good for the Prussian King can not be wrong for the normal population”. As a con-sequence, the citizens met regularly in groups to consume beer. Today every fifth German man is a member of a regulars’ table.

Back then you clinked glasses wishing “Prost” (“Cheers”) - or more distingu-ished “Prosit”. That is Latin and means “it may benefit”. By now it is medically proven that beer is very nourishing and also healthy. In the 12th century, the famous Hildegard von Bingen an-nounced “Cerevisiam bibat!” and called to drink beer.

A well-known saying in Germany is called “Da ist Hopfen und Malz ver-loren” which means that somebody is hopelessly bad at something. It has its origin, of course, in the brewing of beer because if someone ruined the brewing action, the ingredients hop and malt were wasted and you could not enjoy drinking beer anymore.

Today beer drinking and brewing is not only spread in the Bavarian region, but also all over the world You prove to be a Connoisseur if you only allow malt, hop and water to go into your beer – this is the “Reinheitsgebot” traditional breweries have kept up since 1516.

Tony Hawk-almost everybody knows him from magazines, games or skate-board events. The today 42 year old US-American skateboarder was the first person who stood the trick “900” in the halfpipe.

Since 1975 skateboarding fills kids and teenagers with enthusiasm in Germany, too. The Bavarian capital Munich has been one of the first skateboarding-strongholds in Germany. Today the number of skaters increases as well - just look at the high number of young skaters in the streets.

But a lot of skateboarders don’t know that there are also many skating op-portunities in our region. You can find skateparks in Grafenwöhr, Eschen-bach, Kemnath, Weiden and Auerbach. (for exact addresses see below) A good basic hardware consists of fun boxes, different kinds of rails and, of course, quarterpipes.

Fun boxes or just boxes are three di-mensional rectangles, which are vari-able in their height, width and length. The skater’s challenge is to manage the box with as spectacular a trick combi-nation as possible. A trick combination is a composition of different moves.Grindrails can be found almost eve-rywhere in our surrounding. These are

handrails or diverse other metal rods where skateboards can slide. Grinds are a form of skateboarding tricks where the skateboarder slides on the trucks.Most of the quarterpipes are made of timber, concrete or metal and are similar to jump constructions, which allow the skaters to make different kinds of tricks and moves.

But the biggest one in one of these five cities is the park in Weiden at the youth center. There you can find not only different rails, boxes and quarterpipes but also a halfpipe as a little highlight. Each year the skateshop “Bazooka” organizes a skatecontest, in which all skaters can demonstrate their ability on the board. The date for this year has not yet been set, but it is expected to be in autumn.

The youth group of the garden club Kemnath arranges a lot of activities: Games, fun and action are combined with working in the garden and know-ledge about nature.

In 2003 a few members of the garden club decided to found the youth group “Petersiliengurus“. The group offers various opportunities for recreational activities for children and young peo-ple. The peculiar name of the group was selected at the first meeting of the group.

The name soon became popular in Kemnath and the surrounding area. The aim of the “Gurus“ is to pass on theoretical and practical knowledge about nature, gardening and traditions to the children. At the moment there

are over 30 members between 6 and 20 years. But non-members are welcome, too. The club garden is the perfect lo-cation for the events: A large lawn, the club hut, a herb bed, a creek and many trees and bushes. Furthermo-

re the “Petersiliengurus“ have built a patch, and an “insect house“ and put up self-made nesting boxes.The helping children learnt about insects and birds in Germany. They planted various ve-getables on the patch which was even enlarged in 2009.

Apart from that kids learn a lot of manual skills. “Fast as a Pfitschapfeil“- that‘s a Bavarian saying. But hardly anyone even in Bavaria knows what a “Pfitschapfeil“ means. The group mem-bers learnt how to make this traditional toy out of a little branch, a string and a piece of wood. Such a “Pfitschapfeil” reaches a hight of over 30 meters!

Kites were built, too. Each year around Eastertime the “Gurus“ work on Easter decorations for the garden: e.g. Easter bunnies made out of straw and painted eggs. This year they will take part in the competition “Let‘s turn the Oberpfalz (Upper Palatinate) into a scarecrow-country“. All events are organized by an independent youth committee. But the senior members of the club advise

the youth group and help whereever they can. One member of the youth committee participates in all the adult meetings of the club. The highlight each year is the “Vegetable-Barbecue“ in July. A lot of vegetables are put on the barbecue and eaten with various dips and sauces. The aim is to encou-rage children to use ingredients from their own garden for cooking.

The club-internal competition called “Leek-King“ is coming up as well. The members got a small plant in spring and have planted it in their own garden. In October a meeting of all participants will take place and the competitor with the longest leek will become the new “Leek-King“.

Don´t worry, this may come true wi-thout booking an expensive flight or hotel room because many public places or sports facilities just a few steps away will turn into a soccer sta-dium starting on 11th June.

There’s hardly anybody who doesn’t know the meaning of “public view-ing” since the World Championship in 2006 has taken place in Germany. The public viewing of soccer games on big screens was an experience that even fascinated non-soccer fans.

The games can be breathtaking and may give you goosebumps.

The DJK-House in Pressath, the Ge-sellenhaus in Kemnath and the Sport-park Grafenwöhr are going to offer “public viewing”again. They hope to see as positive an atmosphere in the country as in 2006 so that the “vibe” motivates and spurs on the German team as far away as South Africa.

Entry is free of charge and nobody needs to go hungry or thirsty. It is better to arrive a few minutes before the game starts so that you can find a good position to watch the game, or the best seats are gone.

Good feelings and an amazing at-mosphere not only fascinate men, but women in particular were very thrilled in 2006. “I always thought football was only something for men. Women have realized that it´s great fun and since then I love watching football” says Sabine from Kirchenthumbach”.

She adds that she is already looking forward to the fan festival.

You do not only sing the national an-them at the beginnng of the game but you also try to cheer the soccer team

by songs as “54-74-890-2010” or other soccer songs. The whole crowd is equip-ped with jerseys, scarves and flags to support their team so that you will feel like being in the middle of the action.

Our 152 kilometer-long motorbike tour starts in the parking lot of a su-permarket in Grafenwöhr where I meet with my family biker gang consisting of Mom Evi, Dad Mani, Uncle Sigi, Aunt Renate and dog Sunny to start into an eventful day with our motorbikes. A soon as we have planned our tour with the help of a map and Sunny has been safely secured in Dad’s vest, we start with our three bikes, a Yamaha 1100, a Kawasaki 750 and a BMW R-1150-R Roadster towards Eschenbach.

In Eschenbach we turn left at the traf-fic light and drive up the Stadtberg, keep right at the baroque Bergkirche Church and head down to B-470, on which we turn left, in the direction of Kirchenthumbach. At the Kirchent-humbach exit, we leave B-470 and head into Kirchenthumbach where we take a right at the T-intersection towards Thurndorf.

As soon as we have left Kirchenthum-bach, we turn left into the direction of Troschenreuth/Thurndorf in bright sunshine and enjoy the ride across

the wide country road, which is lined with dandelion pastures and forests and leads us through some small towns until we reach Pegnitz.

In Pegnitz we first turn right towards the city center. At the second traffic light we turn left and follow the main street to the next traffic light where we turn left again. In the traffic circle we take the exit in the direction of Nürnberg and leave Pegnitz, driving by various gas stations and car dealers.

Taking the Autobahn A-9 underpass we take a right at the next traffic light towards Nürnberg/Forchheim. After approximately two kilometers, we turn right into the direction of Pottenstein/

Forchheim and enjoy the beautiful, hil-ly landscape with its dense forests and the lusciously green pastures. Sunny holds its head into the wind and enjoys the pleasant spring air.

The winding road passes by picturesque rock formations and romantic half-timbered houses that look like they were taken from the landscape of a mo-del train set. We drive past the Devil’s Cave, a giant dripstone cave where tours are offered daily, the summer toboggan run and the mountain pool to Pottenstein, a city which can truly be called the beauty of the Fränkische Schweiz region. Pottenstein Castle, which can be toured, is located on an impressive rock above town. But today,

we unfortunately ignore the castle and turn immediately left into the direction of Gößweinstein.

Here, we take a break to visit the im-pressive cathedral which was built around 1739 and the adjacent pilgrima-ge museum with the votive characters made of wax. Sigi, our tour guide, tells us about the history of Gößweinstein Castle which is located on a rock above town. But the time has come for a hear-ty snack and so we climb back on our bikes and head into the direction of the Kathi-Bräu brewery, a biker meeting point that is well-known beyond the borders of the Fränkischen Schweiz region and famous for its good beer and tasty selection of snacks, coffee and cake.

To reach the Kathi-Bräu brewery in Heckenhof we first have to follow a small, winding road to Behringersmüh-le. Here, we turn left towards Eber-mannstadt, and, after having crossed two bridges, turn immediately right towards Hollfeld. Now we are traveling through the wild and romantic Wie-senttal Valley, bordered by high rock formations into which the Wiesent river has dug itself.

The green river banks invite you to have a picnic and a hiker’s heart start will start to pound faster when looking at the winding paths and roads. If you are into adventure, you can rent a kayak and go down the river. Our tour takes us into Waischenfeld, where we tour another great castle.

But we are hungry and continue on to through Waischenfeld and Nankendorf and turn left at the intersection towards Aufseß, which received an entry into the Guinness Book of Records in 2001 because it has the largest amount of breweries per capita. Through Hoch-stahl we go to Kathi-Bräu brewery in Heckenhof, past colorful pastures and blooming fruit trees. Hundreds of bikers with their bikes often meet here in the parking lot of Kathi-Bräu brewery.

A walk across the parking lot is always worth your while because you can dis-cover neat bikes and have a talk with other bike lovers. Many tables and ben-ches in front of the guest house, some of them covered, offer the guests lots of room to sit together. The snack menu offers hearty Franconian delicacies and one should also taste the famous beer. However, you should always keep

After a well-tasting meal we conti-nue on to the highlight of our tour: Rabenstein Castle. To

get the-re, we first head back to the main street. Here, we turn left and drive through Hoch-stahl, Dörnhof and Nankendorf back to Waischenfeld.

Once we arrive in Waischenfeld, we take an immediate turn left towards Rabenstein Castle and follow the main street through Waischenfeld and Lan-genloh. Then we turn right towards Rabenstein Castle. When you turn left after approximately one kilometer onto a dusty road, the area does not seem to offer anything spectacular at all but after a short walk, you reach the natural paradise of Rabenstein Castle.

The castle itself is located majestically and in a fairy-tale manner on a high plateau above the Ailsbach Valley and the adjacent area with the bird of prey and owl park of the falconry, the Sophienhöhle cave and the cozy guest house and the beer garden are surrounded by rocks and ancient huge trees that provide comfortable shade in the summer and could probably tell many exciting stories.

In the falconry, you can take an up-close look at the majestic birds of prey in their cages and watch them hunting during the flight shows that

are held daily, except for Monday, when the weather is nice. Several tours through the knight’s chambers of the castle, whose history begins in 1188 and which dominates over the wide and winding Ahorntal Valley and the rugged, bizarre Ailsbachtal Valley, are offered daily, except for Monday.

You can reach the Sophienhöhle cave by foot in about 10 minutes. Its

thousands of

ye-a r s -old oker, r e d and brown dripstone formations have created a magic, underground palace. Informative toiurs are offered here year-round as well. We enjoy the beau-tiful ambience of this location, which takes us back into long-gone times and end the beautiful day with coffee and delicious piece of cake in the beer garden of the guest house.

We dream of old knights and noble damsels while Sunny makes friends with the dogs of the other guests in the beer garden.

Rested and invigorated we start the last portion of our round trip through the picturesque and dreamy Fränkische Schweiz region. From the parking lot of the castle, we turn back onto the main road and turn right into the direction of Kirchahorn. The street winds down the mountain in serpentines and at the

bottom, we turn left towards Kirch-ahorn/Bayreuth.

After a few kilometers, we turn right towards Pottenstein. In Adlitz, we follow the main road and turn into the direction of Hohenmirsberg at the T-intersection. After Hohenmirsberg, we turn right towards Trockau. We stay on the main road and drive through the quaint villages of Lindenhardt,

Schwürz and Gottsfeld to Creußen

where we turn right at the T-intersection in the di-rection of Nürnberg/Pegnitz and im-mediately left at the traffic light in the direction of Speichersdorf/Kemnath.

The road takes us out of Creußen and through the next village (Neuhof ). Ap-proximately 1.5 kilometers past Neuhof we turn right towards Vorbach which we reach after passing through the villages of Prebitz and Voita. Now we are back in our home region, allowing the last warm sun rays of the day to accompany us home.

The main street winds through Vorbach and takes us to Oberbibrach where we turn right directly after the church towards Moos. In Moos we turn left

towards Eschenbach. We drive through the dark forest, along

Rußweiher Lake to the inter-section of B-470 which we

cross. Our tours leads back to Grafenwöhr, where

we started our nice day trip, across

the Eschenbach market place.

In Neusath 200 (part of 92507 Nab-burg, ca. 31 km / 19 miles south of Weiden); ph 09433-24420 The Oberpfälzer Freilandmuseum offers an insight into country and farming life of earlier days. Like all open-air museums, it is an educational institu-tion where learning means lots of fun!

There are now 50 re-erected buil-dings, showing how people lived and worked based on their social standing and the local region. The houses were originally occupied by farmers, smallholders, peasants, day labourers, weavers, herdsmen, millers, huntsmen and nobles.

Opening times: 20 Mar. – 07 Nov. 2010: Tue. thru Sun., 09:00 - 18:00 (last admission at 17:00). Closed on Mondays except if that Monday is a German holiday. Dogs are allowed on the premises on a short leash.Admission: Adults: 4.50 Euros. Children 6 and older: 3.- Euros. Family ticket: 11.- Euros.

Altmühltaler Mühlenmuseum (Mill Museum): in 92345 Dietfurt, „Reng-nathmühle“ (only GE), Hauptstraße 51 (ca. 35 km / 22 miles SW of Ho-henfels); ph 08464-209.

This last of the active mills in the Alt-mühl valley, first documented in 1467, is driven solely by waterpower from the Weiße Laaber river, via 53 leather belts. In 1897, the mill produced the first electric current with its water wheel and a direct current generator. Up until 1950, the whole city of Dietfurt was supplied with electricity from the mill. A special exhibit about the electricity supply is displayed on the ground floor. Opening times: All year round, daily 08:00 - 20:00. Guided tours daily at 10:00, 14:00, and 16:00 in the working mill.

Ceramics / Egyptian Museum: in 92637 Weiden, Internationales Ke-ramik-Museum, Luitpoldstraße 25, ph 0961-32030. Free admission! This museum was opened in April 1990 as an outlet of the Neue Sammlung München. It is fortunate to have

rotating exhibitions of ceramic ob-jects from eight millennia - including objects from ancient Egypt. The ex-hibits are supplied by four different museums from Munich (Prähistorische Staatssammlung, Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst, Bayerisches Natio-nalmuseum and Neue Sammlung). In addition, they have a permanent display of Chinese porcelain from the Qing dynasty that was donated to the Wei-den museum by a local businessman.

The Fränkische-Schweiz-Museum (only GE) is located in the so-called Judenhof, a buildings ensemble from the 18th century which is easy to lo-cate thanks to the two towering rock „pillars“ next to it.

Their collection covers geology, archeo-logy and the historic development of

the region. You will get an insight into everyday life and work in the past. A genuine old synagogue from the 18th century plus many Evangelical and Catholic artefacts mirror the deep re-ligiousness of the area.

The exhibition at the Hollerhaus (only GE), a restored old farm house typical for the area, is an impressive display on how humans have shaped the landscape over the past 4,000 years since they first settled here. Additional collections provide information on geology, fossils and minerals.

The Bavaria Movieland can be visi-ted daily during a guided tour (only GE) where you will be shown how (German) films and TV series have been produced. You can even re-enact short episodes in the original film sets.

Another highlight is the Stunt Show (only GE): watch real stuntmen as they perform risky chases, fall from sheer heights, and survive explosi-ons. Afterwards, they will show the visitors their little tricks.

In addition, you can experience a 4-D (!) cinema. Watch the animated snowboard film, exclusively produced for this theatre. Animated cinema seats, fog machines, wind and all kinds of other special effects make

If your children are too young for that, you may want to take them to „Baby-land“ which is the perfect environment for the littl‘uns, with a jeep carousel, a mini train in the dino park, and a magic show.

Elderflowers and elderberries have been known for their healthy ingre-dients and positive effects on a person’s constitution for centuries. Of course both products have been used in the traditional cuisine too. At this Holun-derblütenfest (dates still from 2009), you can try various delicacies: „Bayeri-sche Hollerkiachl“ (elderflower dipped in beer dough and deep-fried), elder lemonade, and much more.

The Wunderhof (special garden and gallery) is open, in 92262 Birgland, Eckertsfeld 1

The Wunderhof (only GE) is the home of artist Evi Steiner-Böhm. The pro-perty lies in a beautifully romantic area at a former Celtic settlement. On the grounds you will find a unique “life-time“ garden, an art barn, a gallery and a pretty café, all inviting you to enjoy and savour nature and art.

The gardens at the Wunderhof were built under an artistic aspect, too, sym-bolizing the various life segments of a human being, from birth to death and beyond. They can be visited during a guided tour: Guided tours for the public take place every Sunday from 13:30 - 14:30 (Admission 5.- Euro pp, children are free). Groups can book special tours during the week.

Café and Art Barn are open every Sa-turday 14:00 - 17:00, on Sundays and German holidays 14:00 - 18:00. The whole property is a smoke-free zone, except for the little smoker’s corner under the apple tree.

Special Exhibit: “Überschäumende Maßkrüge“ - the1960 beer strike (!) in the Maxhütte , in 92237 Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Stadtmuseum, Neustadt 14 (ca. 20 km / 12.5 miles south of Vilseck)

Bavaria isn’t known as a beer country for nothing - when workers were de-nied their daily beer at the Maxhütte smelting furnace, they went on strike! On 02 March 1960, the new Director General of the Maxhütte reduced the beer consumption on his premises to one bottle per worker per day which caused a lot of annoyance. But when on 01 October 1960 he forbade the sale of beer within the plant completely, he created a huge storm of outrage: within just a few hours, the complete staff went on strike and the fire in the smelting furnaces nearly subsided / cooled off. Only with the mediation

of the Bavarian Labour Minister Stain, a compromise could be reached two days (!) later, and work was picked up. These happenings surrounding Germany’s only ever beer strike, and some cheeky information about Bavari-ans and their love of beer are explained in this exhibition.
