The Uniliner® press series is modular andflexible, giving it the ability to cover the widestrange of production requirements. It is a trueprinting innovation, combining proven Goss®

design and technology into a highly flexibleone-around and two-around press system forboth coldset and heatset production.

The modular design allows for 4x1, 4x2, 5x2or 6x2 configurations, using a common basethat shares major press elements and systems.Also, the Uniliner press series allows theunique choice of non-collect or straight/collectrunning for highly efficient production. Foradded flexibility, different cylinder formats canbe combined into a single press line, whereindependent but flexible production is plannedfrom two folders.

This Uniliner press series provides a host ofoptions that can be installed at the time ofpurchase or retrofitted as production needschange.

Uniliner 4x1 press system

Dedicated to straight production, utilizing aone-around plate cylinder plus a two-aroundblanket cylinder, this press offers cost savings inuse of plates and makeready times. It alsooffers significant flexibility in pagination,

Uniliner 4x2 press system

Covering all straight and collect productionneeds and utilizing two-around plate andblanket cylinders, this press offers highlyeffective production of short to medium runwork. The Uniliner 4x2 is a highly flexible andcost effective investment, ideally suited to dailyproduction at up to 192 pages collect, with2:5:5 folder. 5x2 and 6x2 alternatives are alsoavailable as well as heatset configurations.

Utilizing a four-plates-across and one-plate-around plate cylinder with a two-aroundblanket format, this press system combinesall printing unit, folder, reelstand andsophisticated control system features intoone integrated press system.

4x1 flexibility

Modern publishing has new challenges interms of color quality, section numbers andsize, mix of production run lengths and totalefficiency. In particular, many regionalnewspaper printers now want higher andmore flexible section capability, highproductivity in tight time windows andmaximum efficiency when investing in CTPand press systems.

The ability to produce varying sections and theflexibility to size these sections in two-pagesteps is also a key issue. Flexible advertisingplacement and demographic tuning of thesections is an increasingly important area ofpublishing to generate more revenue anddefend circulations. This is equally importantfor ‘own newspaper’ and third party ‘contractprint’ situations, where quite different needsmay be required from a single pressinvestment.

The flexible 4x1, 8-page press is ideal forthese production scenarios, being not onlyattractive in its own right but a potentiallymore attractive solution over larger, multiplefootprint single-width presses. Whenpaginations get above 48 pages broadsheet,the 4x1 press investment gets more attractiveas it uses fewer reelstands and has lowermanning requirements.

To optimize manning and space requirements,the Uniliner 4x1 has configuration alternativesincluding split-level and “T90™”. The latter hasthe reelstands on the same level as theprinting units, with both at 90 degrees totheir normal orientation. This not onlyoptimizes manpower, but also provides a verycompact press with the added advantage ofeasier web-width changes.

Uniliner color quality

The Goss® Uniliner® press series is specificallydesigned for 24-hour newspaper andcommercial printing operations, with productcut-off requirements from 400mm to 630mm(15.75" to 24.8"). Web-widths range from1100mm to 1900mm (43.3" to 74.8”),depending on cut-off and Uniliner model.The press units offer a range of quality andflexibility features including:

Robust investment

Goss utilizes state-of-the-art design andmanufacturing techniques throughout itsentire product portfolio. The modular printingunits of the Goss Uniliner series feature highquality castings and forgings, stainless steelcylinders and high grade material solutions foroptimum print quality and press life.

‘H’ frame unit construction, shaftless driveswith four motors per tower and two-forminking combine to give a very attractiveinvestment package for regional newspaperprinters around the world.

Unique 4x1 unit design

A unique and patented printing cylindermounting design on the Uniliner 4x1 pressallows high print quality for all web-widths upto 1680mm (66"). Additional features drivinghigh print quality are the metal backedblankets with a very narrow gap (1mm),effectively eliminating blanket-gap bounceand ensuring optimum blanket life andreduced noise.

Tower flexibility

Uniliner press units can be arranged inprinting towers to produce 1/1 to 4/4 color,with an optional fifth level. The towerarrangement allows maximum flexibility formultiple webs. For example, three websrunning in a four-high tower can produce 32pages in mono plus 16 in two colors. Thetower arrangement also ensures that theUniliner press is simple to operate, with twolevel operation and easy access resulting inrapid plating and makeready. The short webleads from reelstand to folder, and within aprinting tower, ensure consistent high printquality.

A Uniliner press can have as many towers asneeded to customize output to specific printcapacity, pagination and color contentrequirements.

Chosen to maximize press flexibility, shaftlessdrives make complex press configurationseasier to accommodate and have majoradvantages when frequent job changes arerequired.

Semi Automatic Plate Changeoption

The SAPC option optimizes press utilization onshort runs. Plates are manually placed on thecylinder leading edges and the system takesover to automatically plate each cylinder andthen remove all or selected plates at the endof the run according to the imposition plan.

Goss DigiRail™ is a very reliable, highlyaccurate, inking system that is compatiblewith today’s RIP presetting and digitalworkflow production trends. Digital Inkinggives very fine control to ink density – as lowas 0.1percent in highlight areas or equal toone in 1,000 increments – and providesconsistent color quality in all conditions,from low to high density.

In addition to providing exceptionalperformance, the Goss DigiRail enables fastswitching between coldset and heatset inks.The manifold containing the ink has a verysmall capacity and can therefore be purgedquickly. This allows the alternative ink to besimply switched into the flow. This is asuperior solution to the compromise inksoften employed in hybrid coldset/heatsetprinting.

Open fountain inking

Goss Open Fountain Inking benefits includesimplicity of operation, accurate inkmetering and ease of access for cleaningand maintenance. The ability to set color byup to 32 separate printing zones results in asimple and robust system, which is easy touse and very reliable. An optional page-wideink shutdown facility and page-wideremovable pan dramatically reduce inkchangeover times. Full remote control andpre-setting features are available.

As with the majority of adjustments on theUniliner series, the inkers are remotecontrolled from the press desk and also offeroptional RIP pre-setting capability.

Spray bar dampening system

The Goss spray bar dampening systemensures consistent, contamination-free andeven water laydown throughout the speedrange of the press. Fully enclosed, it featuresa three-roller delivery system with twonozzles per page and manual shutters for

11fast web-width adjustment. A new electronicdampening module improves pulsefrequency and gives greater control.

Shaftless drives

Shaftless drives assist the modular concept ofthe Uniliner press series allowing current, aswell as future, printing requirements to beaccommodated. Highly accurate AC servodrives are used to give optimum print qualityand consistency. One drive motor is used perunit level to give a balance betweeninvestment cost and flexibility. One shaftlessdrive motor per couple drive is available as acustomer option.

Straightforward tower additions

Uniliner towers can be added to existingGoss or non-Goss presses to add color orpagination in a very cost-effective way. Aidedby the simplicity of shaftless drives, toweraddition projects can replace existing monofootprints or be added in available space atthe ends of a press line or within the pressline itself with minimum disturbance.

THE UNILINER PRESS DESIGN PROVIDES OPTIMIZED

WEB CONTROL FROM REELSTAND TO FOLDER. THIS

IS ACHIEVED IN THREE MAIN ZONES: REELSTAND TO

FIRST PRINTING COUPLE; FIRST PRINTING COUPLE TO

THE LAST AND WITHIN THE FOLDER.

Accurate control over web tension is the key tothe combination of quality and speed providedby the Uniliner® press. By carefully managingthe tension gain from the reelstands, throughall the printing couples to the turner bars andthen into the folder, optimum print quality ismaintained at all press speeds.

Reelstands

The Uniliner press series is offered with achoice of two-arm reelstands. Automationfeatures include chucking, centering andunloading of the cores. An automatic reel-loading system can be supplied with theoption of a station for unpacking and splicepreparation as well as turntables for rotatingreels.

Web feed system

Web feed systems dramatically reducewebbing-up time, especially for job changes.A webbing-up system with tapes is supplied asstandard. There is also an option with a chain’snake‘ which provides webbing-up speeds ofup to 40 meters (130 ft) per minute.

Jaw 2:3:3 folder – Ideal for mediumpagination newspapers, the advanced shaftlessdrive 2:3:3 jaw folder offers consistently highaccuracy of folding and delivery up to 80pages broadsheet, straight and collect. Majorfeatures include on-the-run lap fold, pushbutton mode change and pin releaseadjustment. There is a full range of options toprovide motorized adjustments controlled byimposition data, including remote controllednip setting. Additionally, a collect stitcher andquarter folder are among other optionsavailable.

Jaw 2:5:5 folder -– Similar to the 2:3:3 folderbut with an expanded capacity of 96broadsheet pages, this folder with a 2:5:5cylinder ratio offers a top of the rangeproduction alternative for high paginationwork.

Upper folder options include up to three levelsof former boards for high section counts andthree across formers, where height restrictionsrequire a different approach.

Angle bar system

The flexible turner bar package of the Unilinerpress contributes to the overall flexibility of thepress, providing turning and slitting underheavy-duty operation. The turner bars alsoprovide essential draw for the web usingmotorized rollers and register for multiplewebs using sophisticated sidelay controls.

Modular folder system

The Uniliner press is offered with a range offast and reliable Goss® folders, to ensureefficient delivery of quality products.

The proven and user friendly Goss 2:5:5 and2:3:3 jaw folder range provides high accuracyand flexible folding to match paginationrequirements up to 96 pages broadsheet.

The OPCS press control center is the focalpoint for all the work the press crew does,

from utilizing data from the digital workflowand CTP area to controlling the press for fastmakeready and low waste start-ups. Remotediagnostic capability is standard.

It is also the location for altering the basicsetting of the press, from adjusting the "S"curves governing ink and water balance topreparing the press for production.

Press control specifications can accommodatedifferent levels of remote control to suitproduction requirements. These can beupgraded if production requirements change.

The Goss® Uniliner® series offers a widevariety of choices, including installationoptions, additional equipment and heatsetpackages for commercial print production.

Heatset option

As the Uniliner press is based on knowledgegained from selling the Universal® pressfamily in over 45 countries worldwide, itharnesses a wealth of experience in heatsetand mixed heatset/coldset press systems.

Heatset press packages are normallyspecified with cooled ink drums, chill rollerassembly and full heatset dryer assembliesengineered for mixed or dedicatedproduction.

Concrete table or reelstandsubstructure mounted presses

Reelstands for the Uniliner press family canbe at floor level, mounted below a concretetable, or be load bearing, supporting theprinting units, to suit individual customerrequirements.

For single floor operation, Goss “T90™”configurations create a more compact pressconfiguration and, with the use of “Uniflex”bars at the top of each tower, provide a

17simpler solution to web-width changes andribbon positioning.

Where Uniliner tower additions are beingconsidered for existing Goss or non-Gosspresses, Uniliner equipment can be adaptedto suit the existing press mounting situation.

Fan out compensation

Fan out compensation, via bustle wheels, isstandard on all Uniliner printing towers. Anair-operated option is available which hasremote control and presetting from thepress desk.

Register systems

Goss offers a choice of automatic registercontrol systems from leading vendors. Thesesystems include four-color and cut-to-length

register, which can be fully integrated withinthe Goss control system. A closed-loopdensity control option is also available.

Wash-up systems

With increasing press running hours, the useof automated wash-up systems is a verypositive efficiency improvement. A choice ofblanket wash systems is available, togetherwith an automatic ink train system whichcleans the rollers with solvent and collectsexcess ink and dirt with a scraper blade to aprogrammable sequence.

Reelroom and MailroomAutomation Systems

From assisted reel loading to full AGVsystems and sophisticated newspaperpackaging solutions, Goss can offer a widerange of reelroom and mailroom automationto suit every production situation.
