Rev. Derricks Dies Tennesseans Coming July 1Famous gospel composer. The Rev.

Cleavant Derricks, died in NashvilleThursday, April 14, at 3:30 a.m., after along period of illness and deterioratinghealth.

Derricks' best-known works are gospelclassics. "Just A Little Talk With Jesus,"

"We'll Soon Be Done With Troubles and

Trials." and "When God Dips His Love InMy Heart." His portfolio includesnumerous other popular gospel songs.

After many years of obscurity - andsometimes poverty - "The Rev." wasrediscovered in January of 1975 when hechanced to walk into the offices of

Canaanland Music on Nashville's Music

Row.From that moment on. Sylvia Mays and

Aaron Brown of Canaanland became the

elderly gentleman's guiding light. Theywere instrumental in getting him arecording contract with Canaan Records, under which two long-play albums werereleased. Derricks had never seen the

inside of a recording studio before.Inspired by their confidence and gentle

urging. "The Rev." resumed hissong-writing career and appeared at bothThe International Gospel Song Festivaland the National Quartet Convention, although on one of those occasions, he wastoo ill to stand up. He was also featured onan NBC-TV documentary on gospel music.

Brown set about trying to secureroyalties on Derricks' songs, for which hehad never received a penny.

"The Rev." and his wife later moved to

Nashville from their home in Washington,

Willie Winn and the Tennesseans will be

D.C., where he had pastored churches. He possessed a deep bass voice that

enthralled his audiences. A dedicated and

deeply religious man. Derrick's was asource of inspiration to many.

The kindly man was especially loved forhis genuine humility; and. according to areport from Mays, his dying words were."U>rd. take me; I'm nothing,"

and uneducated men.

Samson took a jaw bone of an ass andGod permitted him to slay one thousandPhilistines, Judges 15:15-16. Gideon hadthirty two thousand men. but God said thatis too many. Later. He took three hundredmen and got the job done.

It was only a smooth stone from David'ssling-shot and Goliath, the Philistine Giantfell dead. I Samuel 17:49-51. Also. Godopened the mouth of Balaam's ass or mule, and the old mule told Balaam the messagethat God had for him.

King Hezekiah was sick unto death- IIKings 20:56. He used the weapon of prayer, and God heard him. saw his tears, healed

his body, and added fifteen years to hislife.

Two of my deacons went out one nightand used the weapon of witnessing. Theyfound a lost-hungry-hell deserving-convicted soul, told her about Jesus, and

she was saved. A week later a relative

found her body, but the real person hadmoved out to be with the Lord.

One hot-sunny day. when I was aseventeen year old boy plowing corn on alittle rocky hill side, the Lord called me topreach the Gospel. Over the years, as Ihave preached the Old Time Gospel, it has

souls saved. Yes. God uses the weapon ofpreaching to save those that believe.

Last, but not least, the Lord uses the

Weapon-Gospel Singing, to convict lostsinners and edify the saints. Only eternitywill reveal all the blessings Gospel Singinghas brought to our churches and individualhearts. As a Pastor, of many years. I havealways tried to be a friend to GospelSinging. Never have I felt that preachingand singing are in competition, but aremighty weapons in the hands of our God.Let us pray. sing, and preach until theLord comes, for Jesus said. "Occupy till Icome."
