I n this edition of our tabloid we introduce the new Golf Indonesia course rating

system. We feel, with the vast number of golf courses surrounding us in the Jabotabek area, some 39 courses to choose from, a course rating system would act as a useful tool for golfers to compare golf courses. Of the 39 courses available for the golfers in the region, there are lavish golf courses with Bermuda grass designed by world-class architects like Robert Trent Jr., courses cut out of the foothills of Bogor designed by five-time British Open Champions, and simple but pleasing courses run by the air force with elephant grass with affordable green fees. All golfer’s like different things, and what might please one golfer may annoy another, but with our five parameters: Accessibility, Course, Facilities, Caddies and Ambience we ensure that our team will provide the most discerning of golfers a nice overall picture of a golf course and what it has to offer for our Rupiahs.

Accessibility - we discuss the location of the golf course, in distance in kilometres from the SCBD part of town, although some courses are cheaper, they may be located in far away places where transport to and from can cause a headache and ruin the enjoyment of one or two birdies on the course. However, for the adventurous open-minded golfer, a long drive may be worth the feeling of having the course from themselves on a Sunday afternoon rather than a macet from the first tee and a five-hour-plus

round. A central course, albeit more expensive has the added bonus of the possibility of a morning 18 holes tee –time with a client before being back in the office for lunchtime. Or a brisk 9 holes at sunset after a hard day’s slog in the office both make the higher price worth it.

For the Course, our reviewers take in consideration a number of factors. Course design, we are spoiled for choice with regards of course designers we can enjoy. Golfers can enjoy a grand slam of major winners and take a look into the creative minds of Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Peter Thomson, Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman - multiple major winners who have designed courses for us to be grateful for in the region. Course condition - in some golfer’s minds the most important - there is nothing more frustrating than seeing your birdie putt hop offline on route to the hole during your weekend round. Course difficulty, we have a team of writers of all handicaps and abilities. The average playing handicap in the US is approximately 16.2, our writer’s range from 8–24 so we can provide an honest account of a course's difficulty. Nonetheless, we all like a challenge, so a tougher course usually gets positive points rather than negative.

Facilities speaks for themselves, we all appreciate a soothing Javanese massage after a

gruelling round of match play in the club championship. Or perhaps we like to bring the whole family along for a day out, so the kids can enjoy a morning by the pool whilst the parents enjoy the golf course. There are several golf clubs which offer resort-like facilities which families can enjoy. Food and beverage is also put under the microscope as we reveal the delicious signature dishes available at many clubhouses. There are also courses that offer professional quality practice facilities where aspiring pros and single digit golfers can oil out the kinks in their short game under the tropical sun and hit hundreds of practice balls off the turf to island targets.

Your personal female caddy for the round... something of the norm these days, as the wise old male caddies are being replaced by the make-up clad pretty female caddies even at the older, more traditional clubs to keep up with the times. Is there anything more pleasing than having an attractive female give a high-five as you sink a 25ft par putt, or is their anything more annoying than having an attractive caddy read your putt one ball left when in fact it is a double break one left and then two balls right as you three putt for bogey? The caddie and the golfer form a team for a round so we will access their professional golfing qualities as well as their charm combined.

Last but not least, we discuss the courses' Ambience. Here we rate the merits of how the golf club and golf course complies with the traditional values of the game of golf. How has the particular course or resort worked to create and uphold with the game's age-old traditions, or does it have other priorities? Fundamentally, has the golfer experienced an ambience which promotes the joys and challenges of golf on the course as well as a venue where golfers can sit around in the clubhouse in comfort and warmth afterwards for many an hour exchanging stories and revelling about all their golfing adventures.

To summarise the all-new course rating system, each five parameters gains a total score out of 10. The five scores are then added together then multiplied by two to give a total score / percentage out of 100.

We begin this month and with the new course ratings system with the wonderfully challenging BSD, a Jack Nicklaus signature designed course. I’ll leave you with a quote and a glimpse into the mind of the Golden Bear himself regarding golf course design:

“My No. 1 goal in terms of creating individual shot values is to make the player use his mind ahead of his muscles, to control his emotions sufficiently to really think through his options before drawing a club from the bag.”

Course Record

F or Jakarta’s avid golfers, Bumi Serpong Damai is commonly

referred to as the BSD. Found alongside the Cisadane River and within the Serpong Valley, it should certainly be on anyone’s Jakarta hit-list. The course is located in South Tangerang 32 km from the SCBD part of town, and is easy to find after exiting at the Alam Sutera signage on the Jakarta–Merak toll road.

The course was designed and more recently slightly remodeled to mirror and sync to the natural undulations of this tropical area. As Jack Nicklaus' maiden project in Indonesia he ensured this remarkable 6,545-meter, par 72 course incorporated many of his trademark features from some of the world's top courses. To bring the course up to today’s USGA standards, a thorough remodeling plan was put in place in July 2008

at the owner's, Bpk. Ciputra’s request. The plan, executed by a Nicklaus design team, has produced arguably Jakarta’s trickiest of greens and a fair few three and four putted greens.

Nicklaus originally scoffed at the idea of building a world-class facility in Indonesia, he is well and truly eating his Golden Bear hat right now.

The CourseThe layout and many of the features are unmistakably Jack Nicklaus design. Trademark fairway hugging lake-like bunkers are the go-to for the 18 time Major winner, whilst a seemingly seamless blending into the natural environment makes it unmistakably Indonesian.

With numerous levels and options of tee boxes there are different challenges for all handicaps. From

the famous pro Lee Westwood (he adorns the clubhouse) to the shakiest beginner, BSD can be taken on by all. A true thinking course, nearly every tee shot has you consulting your caddy for distances to bunkers, carry over water or best angle of attack. Jack Nicklaus was a perfectionist as a player and this certainly comes across in his course design and his crafty positioning of hazards.

The greens, upgraded in July 2008 to the most recent world standards by the Nicklaus team have been heard to even keep some golfers away. With no such thing as an easy two putt, you will do well to reach the 19th without three or even four strokes on any one of these most tricky of surfaces. Often two or even three tiered, some chip shots from around the stadium greens even Mickelson would find tricky. Approach shots must be well-

placed and tactical, with the uphill putt almost a necessity. The fairways are often wide and whilst the long bunkers often running alongside them may be shallow, great care must be taken. Depending on when you play the rough can be very forgiving with Rescue clubs often fine to jib it out. If you’re not a fan of the sand wedge ‘hack-out’, best to avoid playing anytime around tournaments where the rough can triple in length.

Course ConditionsNot only do the greens need great imagination but also a deft touch running at a slick eleven on the stint-meter. Fair, consistent and true, trust the line and they should drop. It’s refreshing to have fast greens to play on, some of Jakarta’s courses have tediously slow greens requiring a knock rather then a stroked putt. At BSD a smooth putting stroke will be rewarded. Nice and receptive whilst not being too soft, a pleasure to play. The fairways are impeccable, compact and offer decent roll in the dry season conditions, with BSD’s long yardage, it’s vital for getting on in regulation. The rough is even and fair (depending on when you chose to play) and generally does not swallow balls or leave golfers resorting to the anathemas ‘foot wedge’.

Clubhouse FacilitiesThe locker rooms are particularly impressive, the plain white lockers and the crisp green carpets breathe a minimal yet suitably classic feel. With all the amenities the vainest of golfers would


require. Sauna, steam room and whirlpool, and massage services are all available for the full treatment of après golf for golfers. There is also an Olympic-sized swimming pool next door to the clubhouse where your kids can entertain themselves, BSD offers entertainment for the whole family, and would be a good option for a family day out from Jakarta.

We all know golf can induce a healthy appetite and BSD offers the golfer a vast range of top quality cuisine. The Asian offerings are particularly impressive, with several Japanese and Korean dishes on the menu. I opted for the sop ikan patin, one of their signature Indonesian dishes; it was delightful and is highly recommended for your visit, some of the best fish soup I have encountered in Indonesia.

Practice FacilitiesBSD certainly has one of the most impressive and spectacular driving ranges you’re likely to see. Incorporating a giant lake, you hit out off immaculate grass onto island greens and floating targets stationed at numerous yardages away. Men in boats

spend the day shagging the balls. Spend an afternoon here and the hours will seamlessly pass by, speaking with members, the pros are very good too. The putting green is big and resembles the greens on the course almost perfectly, well worth paying a visit to beforehand. Likewise with the short game area, hours can be spent honing you skills at the true green and surrounding bunker, apron and rough.

CaddiesWholly professional, a very good grasp of English and a seemingly photographic memory for all yardages and carries, the caddies at BSD are certainly shot savers. A good sense of humour as they manage to keep up morale during this sternest of tests, most importantly they will help you navigate the trickiest of greens with aplomb. Caddy knowledge can save you a stroke or two here, with the two and three tier greens consulting them for a read is wise.

AmbienceBSD continues to be an ambitious project with many major triumphs along the way. Nicklaus’ 19th? Not quite yet. Whilst some unfinished McMansion vanity projects line the course creating almost a ghostly feel, a steady and numerous membership give it a granite base. BSD has a very

strong reputation amongst the Japanese golfing community here in Indonesia. Friendly staff, helpful pros and almost a family feel means BSD manages to uphold the traditional values of golf in a thoroughly modern and forward thinking way. It truly encapsulates, “The spirit of the Hills”. Jack Nicklaus and Damai Indah golf have created a wonderful ‘challenge’ for golfer2s, that will certainly test a golfer’s skill and playing ability. For a golfer who can play BSD gracefully will be able to play many of Jakarta’s golf courses with relative ease. BSD to us comes across as a golf course designed for the real golfer’s amongst us, who strive to test their playing skills on the golf course, and to see how good they really are.

A fter winning his first British Open this year with a

final round of 5 under par 66 at Muirfield, Phil Mickelson said that he had played the best round of his life.

If only the average golfer knew that he achieved this feat with no driver in his bag, but instead with 5 wedges. This strategic choice of clubs for Phil was the clincher to come out on top on the hard, fast and tricky course where scoring was as much about trajectory and distance control as it was for accuracy.

Delegating his 13 degree fairway metal to take over the work of his driver off the tee, his weapons of choice from inside 140 metres from the pin were a 47 degree pitching wedge, 52 degree gap wedge, 56 degree sand wedge, 60 degree lob wedge, and 64 degree ultra wedge. Not only were the lofts different on these wedges, but each had a unique combination of shaping, shaft, lie angle, bounce angle and grooving to finesse shots from all types of surfaces such as wiry grass, hard and flat earth, and soft sand. Applying these finely tuned instruments with the skill of a surgeon, he was the only player in the field who finished under par in the tournament.

This seemingly extravagant use of wedges highlights their value for scoring and the importance of strategic club mix in a player’s bag.

Before 1930, the highest lofted commonly used golf club was the niblick. This was a sharp bladed iron with a loft similar to that of a pitching wedge of today. It had a thin sole and was very difficult to use from spongy lies and sand bunkers around the green as it tended to gouge into the ground and lose momentum. There had been various attempts to create clubs to cope with bunkers but none were effective or compliant with R&A and USGA regulations.

The story of what happened from there is romantic. While being given a flying lesson by his good friend Howard Hughes in his private aircraft, champion golfer Gene Sarazen noticed that the downward attitude of the wing flaps on take-off gave the aircraft lift. He applied this principle to the niblick by soldering a piece of lead from its leading edge along its sole, created a thicker sole with a 10 degree bounce angle (the angle that the sole dips down from the leading edge if viewed in profile). This angled surface created lift, allowing the club head to skim through the sand below the ball and send it off softly with backspin—with much more control than a stabbing

action behind the ball with a conventional niblick which tended to send the ball off with a thick wad of sand and unpredictable roll. Sarazen used this new club with great success and sent his prototype to Wilson Company, which increased the loft from 50 to 55 degrees in its manufactured product. The modern sand wedge was born.

Evolution of wedges gradually accelerated over the years. Ex NASA physicist and short game expert Dave Pelz, experimenting on shots around the green with young golf pro Tom Kite, he found Kite could get consistently closer to the pin with the softer ball f light and better stopping power of a 60 degree wedge than with the standard 51 degree wedge or 55 degree sand wedge. For tight hard lies the bounce angle of this prototype was reduced to 6 degrees for cleaner contact and less chance of skulling the ball if perfect contact was not made. Using this club, Kite was the biggest money earner on the PGA tour in 1981. To be competitive others quickly followed, and Ping introduced the 60 degree “L” wedge. Enter the Lob wedge.In the quest to lure golfers with the promise of more distance, manufacturers have been continually de-lofting their golf clubs. The loft of a 9 iron of today is similar to the loft of a 7 iron of 40 years ago. However there is

no consistent standard, as every manufacturer has its own scale of lofts which continually seems to reduce to keep up with the competition. Selling distance is sexy, even if you have to fake it.

Following this trend, pitching wedge lofts have progressively reduced from 51 degrees to anything between 43 and 48 degrees. The resulting 10 degree average difference in loft between the pitching wedge and 55–56 degree sand wedge left a massive gap in the distance each could be hit from the fairway. Enter the gap wedge with lofts in the range 51–53 degrees.

Instead of looking at the number on a golf club, more educated golfers are now looking at their lofts. Leading manufacturers now stamp the lofts on the heads of wedges A player makes a choice of irons and wedges with loft intervals in the range 4–5 degrees, so a choice of wedge lofts may be 47, 52, 56, and 60. However the lofts, bounce angles and other specifications does depend on a player’s angle of attack and the courses he typically plays on. Touring professionals travel with as many as 20 clubs and choose their set make up based on the local conditions. There are champions of specialist wedges. Roger Cleveland manufactured his own brand of clubs before selling Cleveland Golf in 1990. Cleveland wedges are well known in the

market but what is less known is that in 1996 Roger Cleveland joined Callaway as chief club designer, developing new lines of wedges with players such as Phil Mickelson in his testing ground. It seems now to get the latest Cleveland wedge you buy Callaway. And just to show how small the short game world is, Mickelson’s short game coach is none other than Dave Pelz.

The most popular specialist wedge on tour is the Titleist Vokey range, used by over 40 percent of USGA professionals. Bob Vokey has spent a lifetime in metals and machining of golf equipment, from his youthful days assisting his father tinker with clubs, to his own club fitting business, and on to work with golf manufacturers before finally settling at Titleist in 1996. With the ample resources of the Titleist facility and the US tour as his R&D department, Vokey developed a comprehensive range of wedges to suit every circumstance.

Although technical development is a never ending process with leading manufacturers, there is now already a rich inheritance in the choice of wedges on offer. Golfers are advised to take advantage. For better scoring, it may be more beneficial to be fitted for wedges than for your driver.

The Key to Solid Chipping

T hrough many years of teaching club golfers, I believe the key to making solid contact with

chipping is making a high to low swing i.e. the club striking the ball with a downward blow. The majority of poor chip shots are made by trying to help the ball into the air, striking the ball with an upward motion. This will, more often than not, see the ball struck with the leading edge and send it running straight through the green.

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE APPROPRIATE SET UP FOR CHIPPING

When setting up for a chip shot, we need to promote a position suitable for making a downward strike. Chipping is a simple technique; with the following fundamentals a golfer will have a greater chance of saving his par:1. Place 70 % of your weight on your front foot (left foot for a right handed player)

Mastering the art of chipping will increase your scrambling skills and give

you much more confidence in getting “up and down” during your rounds.

On days when your irons are not finding the greens, good chipping

can keep your score in shape. A good chipper feels more relaxed and

confident over his approaches to the green, as he has more confidence

that if he misses the green he can still make par or even birdie.

For those of you having troubles with your putting, perhaps spend the

time on the practice green working on your chipping, and enjoy the

agreement from your golfing buddies of the well earned “gimmie.”

2. Lean the club shaft slightly towards your target, with you hands in front of the club-head3. Have your ball position in the middle of your stance4. Avoid your spine tilting too far to the right, look for a straight spine angle

Chipping Drill 1Practice hitting chips with the heel of your back foot off the ground. This may feel awkward at first, however this drill will give you a great feel for keeping your weight forward and making a descending blow on the golf ball.

Chipping Drill 2Practice hitting chip shots with the club on the ground, roughly one foot behind the ball you intend on chipping. This will promote the club swinging upwards on the backswing and making a downward blow on the ball. This will take you a long way towards a solid repeatable chip shot.

Q How did you get interested in the game of golf?A My parents started playing golf 25–30 years ago. My mother actually represented Indonesia at golf often, competing in national tournaments, she competed in 1996 & 2000 PON games. My father also plays but only for fun on the weekends to a 20 handicap.

My older brother also plays, so we often get together for family rounds of golf, which is very pleasant, a good way to spend quality time together as a family.

Q What’s the lowest score you have ever posted?A The lowest score was a 66 at Bali Nirwana. I love to drink caffeine, I drunk a particularly strong and sweet coffee on this occasion before the round and I literally couldn’t stop moving. It obviously worked, but for me it wasn’t a particularly nice experience, my heart was beating incredibly fast. For some reason I played really, really well and there was no worry about slow play.


Q Playing golf as a youngster, who were the golfing professionals you idolised and looked up to for inspiration both male and female?A In my younger years Tiger Woods, but now I like the South Korean female pro Na Yeon Choi. I didn’t watch much golf on TV to be honest but of all the female pros today she is my favourite.

Q What is it about the game of Golf that you love the most?A The fact that it is so different from any other sports; in sports like basketball and football the game is always played on a uniformly sized pitch. Whereas in golf all holes are always different and unique in their own right, which offers a more interesting playing experience. I like the way you have to use your mind, how you incorporate strategy in order to play the next shot one shot at a time to the best of your ability with the least amount of strokes. It also a nice combination of both a physical and mental challenge, whilst dealing with varying wind and playing conditions. It is challenging in many different ways.

Q What is your official golfing handicap?A At my peak I played off about 2 or 3 from the men’s tees and scratch from the ladies' tees.

Q How often do you play golf these days? Or do you still have lots of beauty pageant and media work commitments? A I haven’t been playing much golf recently. I haven’t played a

round of golf since March. I have several media commitments recently through Miss Indonesia, as this is how I make my money. I am also busy helping my mum and brother who run a very successful restaurant in Bali, Kuta, called Dulang Café. You have to try it. Their Sop Buntut got a mention in the top 30 dishes to try in Bali by the Bali Expat magazine. I have been practising a bit recently as I’m looking forward to competing in the Lidhya Ivanna Jaya memorial pro-skins tournament with three other Asian professionals. Tang Thi Nhung from Vietnam, Chihiro Ikeda from the Phillipines and Srisawang Nontaya from Thailand. The event will take place at Senayan National on the 15th of September.

Q Representing Indonesia at Miss World 2012 must have been an incredible experience – what did you learn from the experience?A In 2012 in one year, competing in the Miss World event, I learnt more from the experience than I had in the past five years of my life. It was a steep learning curve that I will never forget. Through being Miss Indonesia I have had the chance to meet so many people from all walks of life, from the poor folk to governors and presidents.

This happened for about 3 years, training hard, too hard, but not enjoying the game. Then I met my new coach Robert Turvey from Ancora Sports and we started to train smart not hard to rekindle the fun that golf should be.

In early 2012 I was working as an intern for an insurance firm when I saw a flyer for Miss Indonesia auditioning, I thought I would give it a go. Part of the audition was to perform through singing or dancing, at the time I couldn’t do either. I had to undergo a crash course in Balinese dancing, but the rest is history, I’ll never regret answering the flyer.

Q Golf can be a very time-consuming hobby, now that you aren’t playing and training so much what are your hobbies outside your working life?A I love to eat. My parents love food as well as running our own restaurant. We love to go and try new restaurants at weekends, discovering different types of cuisine. I also love to watch movies, I also like to cook, especially baking. I make a tasty banana cake. I also enjoy playing other sports as well as going to the gym. With all the eating I do, I would feel guilty not going to the gym.

I am also an avid Manchester United fan. I fell in love with David Beckham as a youngster, and ever since then I follow them very closely. From the current team my favourite players are Wayne Rooney (not so much for the looks) also Robin Van Persie and Ryan Giggs.

Q You seem to be passionate about culinary—baking your own cakes! What restaurants do you recommend in Jakarta?A I would say sushi-tei, good value for money. Duck King is also good, and Social House, they have really nice cocktails. If you go to Bali make sure you visit Dulang Cafe and try the Sop Buntut you won't regret it.

Q What did you have for breakfast this morning?A I had a lot this morning. I had nasi goreng, I also had banana bread which I baked myself. I like eating a big hearty breakfast. I also find there is a certain satisfaction in eating something you made yourself.

Q Single? If you could date any professional golfer who would it be?A Adam Scott without a doubt. He is not just a handsome guy, he is very successful at winning golf tournaments, like the 2013 Masters.

Q You got into beauty pageants as a distraction after working too hard on your golf and not improving. Is your golf game improving now after the Miss World experience?A Yes indeed, I was in a bit of a slump for 2–3 years. I had a Korean coach and I was under a very strict practice regime. Waking up at 6am most mornings, physical training until 8am, followed by practice till about 10pm. It was golf, golf and more golf all-day and everyday. I guess I was golfed out! I wanted to win an upcoming national event so much, I guess I over practised and burn out. By the time the tournament came about I was a bundle of nerves and was so hyped up that I played no way near my best and ended up playing really badly.

How can we be smart golfers?

More and more golfers are switching to biking. Why is this so? A couple of reasons; it's more aerobic, and you don't have to wait and grumble behind the slow playing group. Just take your bike out of the garage and start pedaling. The route and time of day is up to you.

I suspect that the main culprit for this migration can be described in one word; fee. Bicycles are not cheap, often in the same price range with golf clubs. The medium priced models may fetch around 10 million Rupiahs. Yet, unlike golf, the expense stops there. To play golf you have to be prepared to rid of more Rupiahs for two or three types of fees; green fee, caddy fee, and cart fee for the spoiled ones. On top of it, your wallet should be kept stocked to pay for caddy tips and potential betting opportunities. Now, I am not aware whether bike people have their own versions of betting.

Even if it also happens, it wouldn't be as complicated as what we have in golf, with all the formulas and mechanisms.

Of course betting is optional. Fee, however is a must and it keeps on increasing, year after year. Apart from sands in the bunker, building and maintaining the courses involve lots of imported products, from the grass seeds to fertilizer, and all the machinery. When the Rupiah takes a beating, the fees are the first ones to get affected. So, is there a smart, money-wise, way around it?

Smart is the key word. The 15th club that you can't afford not to bring to the golf course is your brain. Bobby Jones once famously said, "Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course—the distance between your ears". How true! When we play, we have to be constantly aware of all the hazards waiting to ruin the day. Once we determined where the danger is, we then have to choose the

smartest and the safest possible option of how to maneuver our ball around them.

That's why they call it 'course management'. So, how to apply the same smartness in managing our financial affair to cope up with the increasing golf fees in Indonesia? Apply for a golf card. It's available in any golfing countries, even in USA. If you wish to play in three connecting states like Arizona, California and Nevada, apply for North Troon Discount Card. By paying a certain amount of joining fee, you may play in dozens of golf courses with only half of the normal green fee.

In Indonesia there are several types of golf cards available.

Bundled with Credit Card Pay the annual fee (usually around Rp.3 million) and get to play at several courses in the country and some overseas.

Subsidy Card Pay the annual fee (around Rp.3,5–4,0 million) and enjoy the subsidized green fee in selected courses. The card operator believes that, in average, their members will play 24 rounds/year. Therefore, if you enjoy Rp.100,000 subsidy per round, you will not use up your paid annual fee. The smartest way here, would be to play at least 40 rounds a year to break even.

Discount CardIGC Card is a pure discount card. You pay only Rp.600,000 annual

fee/year and enjoy golf as many rounds as you like (weekdays and weekends in selected courses) with a discounted green fee. All golf courses want as many visitors as possible, to ensure that their caddies are kept busy and the restaurant is not empty. They are willing to provide discounts as long as we make sure that our cardholders visit their courses frequently.

It's a win-win solution, really. With 1200 active cardholders, IGC will provide the visitors needed by the courses. They can come alone, join IGC weekly practice rounds, or participate in IGC monthly medal and annual championship. On the other hand, the cardholders will happily play more frequently due to the discount they get as opposed to being 'go-show' visitors. The average discount is Rp.100,000. By playing 6 times a year, say in Riverside or Nirwana Bali, the cardholders already recover their annual fee investment.

GOLFING IN ASIA

D anang (also spelt Da Nang) in Central Vietnam is staking its

claim for the title of Vietnam’s Golf Coast. With three new 18-hole signature championship courses within an hour’s drive of the city, Indonesian golfers now have three good reasons to pack their clubs and head north to one of the region’s most exciting golfing destinations. Montgomerie Links opened up Danang to golfers and was the first course in what is emerging as an international golfing venue. Danang Golf Club (www.dananggolfclub.com), designed by Greg Norman, is close to Montgomerie Links on the road heading south from Danang to the historic port town of Hoi An. Head northwards towards the imperial

city of Hué for Laguna Lang Co (www.lagunalangco.com), Vietnam’s first integrated resort complex on a private bay along a sandy stretch of beachfront. Sir Nick Faldo designed these challenging fairways and greens, which have just opened.

In the 1960s, Danang was a base for United States Air Force bombers, which flew military air raids over North Vietnam. During this confrontation, more munitions were dropped in Vietnam than in the whole of World War II. Now the only things dropping into Vietnam are tourists who come to enjoy the sights of China Beach and Hoi An to the south plus Lang Co and Hué to the north.

Over the past two decades especially, Vietnam has really blossomed as a tourism and golfing destination. Many Vietnamese weren’t even born when the Vietnam War (called the American War in Vietnam) raged and devastated the country and their lives are now firmly set on the future. It is an optimistic nation, where visitors are most welcome. Danang has been earmarked as a focus for tourism and there are many things to see and do with direct international f lights providing ease of access for foreigners.

Monty’s BabyColin Montgomerie came and fell in love with the beachside location along the famous China

Beach. Scotsman Colin 'Monty' Montgomerie’s course closely follows his design philosophy of working closely with the site's natural characteristics. Danang is known for its wind-blown dunes, sandy soil and vegetation dominated by local pine-like casaurina trees.

Located along Ha My Beach (which forms part of the legendary China Beach) the 7,200 yard, par 72 links-styled course is one of Montgomerie’s favoured courses. With 110 bunkers (including a whopping 17 on the signature 12th hole) some golfers may think they're playing along the beach than on a golf green. Director of Golf, Taylor Murphy recognises that bunkers of golden sand are a feature of this course but that it is a course for golfers of all abilities. Its sea isle supreme paspalum grass is another feature and something that Murphy says is perfect for the salty conditions and one that plays very smoothly.

Three stand-out holes are the third, fourth and the signature twelfth. The fourth is the course's shortest par 4 (321 yards) played from an elevated tee to a hidden landing area. Water on the right adds to the challenge and a temple is a reminder of the course being located in a country that is predominantly Buddhist.

The par 3, fifth is a short water carry but with a receptive green. While the hole is guarded by a bunker to the front most golfers shouldn't have too much difficulty although those who drive long will see their ball ending up in the casaurina covered dune at the back.

The most favoured hole is the signature twelfth despite many golfers possibly cursing one of the 17 well spaced bunkers which are sure to trap even the best golfer. This par 5 hole requires three strategically placed shots onto the green and precision putting on the expansive but undulating green.

What is most fascinating about this recently constructed complex is just how quickly it has been recognised by golfers. Since the first nine holes opened in just 2008, the course has received accolades rarely bestowed upon a course so young. While it only officially opened in 2010, the course was immediately awarded the '2011 Best Leisure Development in Vietnam' by Asia Pacific Property Awards.

In 2009, Vietnam Golf Magazine recognised it as the ‘Best New Course in Vietnam' and the 'Best Par 5 in Vietnam’ for the 12th hole at 527 yards. Asian Golf Monthly nominated it in 2009 as the ‘Best New Course in Asia'. Its most recent award was for 'One of Asia's Ten Most Elite Golf Courses' (Forbes Travel).

Full Facilities Montgomerie Links has been developed by Indochina Land and includes 60 on-site luxury pool villas. Facilities here are comprehensive with kiosks on holes six and fourteen. Birdies Restaurant and Bar serves Vietnamese and Western favourites and arrangements for halal food can be organised with sufficient notice. While Vietnamese food isn't as spicy as many other Asian cuisines extra chilli is always available for those who appreciate a little spice in their life. The food of Central Vietnam is spicier and saltier than food found in the rest of Vietnam. Montgomerie Links is situated just off the road to the very popular riverside town of Hoi An. The course is adjacent to My Khe Beach voted by Forbes Magazine as one of the world' ten most stunning beaches. Hoi An’s pedestrian-only historic streets make for a refreshing change from the traffic madness of Vietnam's larger destinations.

Staying in StyleDanang is undergoing an explosion in tourism and hotel development. The brand new Hotel Novotel Danang Premier Han River (www.novotel.com)

is a 323-room deluxe hotel of 37 storeys located in a prime downtown location.

MEET THE CADDY

I t was a beautiful Friday morning in Serpong. The time was

half past six in the morning, we lined up behind a couple of earlier f lights, warming up for our scheduled tee off time. I was paired up with a young, energetic caddy; Adinda, 22 years of age, who greeted me with a delightful smile, "Selamat pagi, Pak!"

Adinda has been working as a caddy for the past 2 years. She started the caddy job at another nearby golf course, but came to work at Gading Raya after a year because the pay gets better here. "Di Gading lebih rame, Pak", she uttered when asked why she had moved. She likes the caddy job because she gets to meet different people everyday.

Adinda is a Legok local. She completed her high school with IPS major and soon thereafter, she took up various jobs before landed with the one on a golf course. She mentioned wearing tight sporty uniform daily makes her feel athletic. The sun and sweat are definitely challenging but undeniably enjoyable for her as some of us may feel the same way. As she voiced out her opinion, "Enak, kan, Pak…. Jalan kaki, olahraga, bikin badan jadi sehat!" Not only Adinda understands her responsibilities as a caddy to guide the player

with each hole's different playing conditions, but also to give mental support to the player when needed. She indicated that aiding players with cheer and reassurance besides just carrying out menial tasks on the course tend to help the players more on their games.

One of her pet peeves is when a player doesn't bring his or her own equipment, like, golf tees. It is the player's responsibility to equip themselves with golf tees. On one occasion Adinda remembers she was questioned by a golfer, why she didn't have any tees with her? Being perceptive and helpful, Adinda didn't mind to quickly scour the teeing ground and hand one over. She could easily embarrass the player for not being prepared, but rationally handled the situation with a better move. On another instance, she recalled an amusing experience with a foreign player who carried his own bag on a par 3 because he gambled for the shot and failed to win it. She said the player was overconfident. During her first experience of training as a caddy, Adinda had learned not to be overconfident even, and especially as a caddy. Many times, she would be certain where the balls would land. Yet, the distance and size of the trees could be deceptive from afar. She would then search for the ball in a

completely inexact location. "Malu banget deh…", as she told the story.

Just like anyone having a regular day at work, Adinda finds her favourite days when she witnesses players betting on the game. While other caddies may find such situation unfavorable, Adinda, on the contrary, enjoys the tension from the situation. She even feels the betting helps her to focus on her work. At times, her favourite day would not turn into her favour when her player finishes a round on the losing side. At one time, one of her players made her feel as if it was her fault, strongly requested Adinda to stop making the slightest noise and move during the play. "Sensi banget gitu, Pak", Adinda jokingly said. However, she claims that she is at the benefit on days when her player is on the winning side—a bonus tips as large as ten times of what she regularly makes can graciously slide into her pocket from time to time.

Adinda is caring, attentive, and sharp to avoid different opinions with the players whenever possible. She aims to keep enjoying the day-to-day work of a caddy with all different kinds of players for a couple more years. Afterwards, she hopes to meet a nice man to be married with.
