ADAM TAYLOROriginally from Melbourne, Australia, Adam graduated from the Australian PGA as a full member professional with a Diploma in Golf Instruction in 2005. Having been based at Royale Jakarta Golf Club for the past two years, Adam has devoted his passion and knowledge of the game to improving players of all levels and ages. His instructional techniques have featured in several television golf programs and golf magazines. He looks forward to improving your game through Golf Indonesia Magazine and at Ancora Golf Institute, Royale Jakarta.

MATTHEW NINANMatthew is from the most beautiful province Kerala in India and has been living for over a quarter of a century in another equally enchanting country, Indonesia. One of his prized acquisitions from Indonesia is this sport of golf. He is still working to get the right swing from the tee boxes and is constantly in search of the ever elusive ‘consistency’ on the golf course. Yet, he does not remember saying “I give up.” After all it is too good a sport to walk away from.

All golfers have their favourite player or players in the game. A golfer’s chosen idol could come from several factors: the way they play, similarities in physique, personality, nationality, golf swing and much more.

Rory McIlroy’s win at the Open Championship at Hoylake was a reminder that the world of golf is in good hands, especially as fellow golfers Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia - thanks to an impressive final round play - did their best to make sure Rory’s win wasn’t easy. At 25 years of age, Rory has won his third major and I am sure, judging by the way he carried himself during the tournament, this will definitely not be his last. How can you not admire Rory and his style of golf? His youthful swagger, his powerful game, his attacking course management; when his game is on and his mind focussed on golf he is practically unbeatable, whilst making it all look so much fun in the process. Nike golf sales are bound to have increased over the past few weeks and I am sure we will see many a Nike hat on the driving range.

Here in Indonesia, the best of local talent are enjoying the inaugural year of PGTI’s Indonesian Golf Tour presented by LINC Group, a logistics company who have sponsored

money for our local Indonesian professionals, as well as allowing Indonesia's most talented and passionate amateurs to compete in these professional events. In 2013 the inaugural Jakarta Classic was held at Imperial Klub Golf, an Asian Development Tour event, a tour where Asia’s brightest up-and-coming players play for a chance to play on the Asian Tour. In 2013, there were no Indonesian players in contention or even in the Top 20. The 2014 Jakarta Classic once again returned to Imperial and local golf fans and the golf media were proud to see five Indonesian players competing with the very best and finishing in the Top 20. I am certain this improvement is testament to the Indonesian Golf Tour and the higher frequency of quality events of higher standards for Indonesia’s very best players.

PGTI, LINC Group and OB Golf, thanks for planting this seed, and let us hope the seeds will continue to grow onwards and upwards. It is exciting to see the standard and quality of Indonesian golfers continue to improve steadily. Pak Ciputra has invested large sums of money in developing the Damai Indah Golf courses; the PIK course famously hosts Indonesia’s oldest and most prestigious event, the Indonesian Open. Pak Ciputra has kindly put forward the cash to back another high profile professional golf tournament this year: the inaugural Ciputra Golfpreneur Tournament that will be held at Damai Indah’s BSD, from the 21st the 24th of August. Once again we will see the Top-40 Indonesian PGTI professionals in battle against Asia’s up-and-coming and aspiring stars in this brand new Asian Development Tour event.

It’s a common fact, the more you play with better players the better you become. So, it is great to see another top class Asian Development Tour event here in Indonesia and in combination with the Indonesian Golf Tour we look forward to witnessing a new era of golf here in Indonesia.

GADING RAYA GOLF CLUB

FEATURED COURSE REVIEW BY SIMON REYNOLDS

Gading Raya Golf Club

IntroductionGading Raya Golf Club is an exclusive golf and country club created by PT. Jakartabaru Cosmopolitan, who have successfully developed Gading Raya Serpong Housing & Business District Complex. Established in the mid 90s, Gading Raya is a golf course and country club in top quality condition year round where club members, members' guests and weekday visitors can enjoy great golf and country club facilities in the heart of the Serpong area, close by to Summarecon Mall. The golf and country club’s location is very convenient, and easily accessible from the Semanggi, SCBD area, and should take no longer than 30 minutes via the Jakarta-Merak toll road during early weekday mornings. Being in the heart of a residential area, the golf course’s privacy and setting are perfect for club members and guests to retreat in golf, leisure and entertain business guests in a relaxing, quiet, calm and informal surroundings.

CourseHighly acclaimed Australian Course architect Graham Marsh has created a very playable golf layout within an oasis of scenic private parkland, which is complemented perfectly by ample trees, birdlife, forgiving fairways, shimmering lakes, subtle bunkers and well kept and manicured greens. The 18-hole layout is forgiving to golfers and wayward drives are seldom punished by out of bounds, but subtle dangers are present to those golfers who fail to acknowledge them, allowing for a fun and challenging round of golf for amateurs, avid golfers and professionals alike. Off the back tees, single digit golfers and professionals will be tested by 18 holes measuring 6,500m and there are rumours suggesting that Gading Raya will host the Indonesian Amateur Championships in 2014, a testament to this top quality championship golf course onsite.

The Par-5 Hole #8 at Gading Raya Golf Club

On our visit to Gading Raya, the Golf Indonesia team were very impressed by the golf course playing conditions, immaculate throughout the 18 holes. Many of the golf courses towards the Bogor area and Jagorawi toll often battle and toil to maintain good green conditions, whereas Gading Raya’s greens were a pleasure to putt on. Consistent in speed, fast enough to make things interesting measuring 9 on the stint meter. Golf is far more enjoyable with these rolling putting services, keep it up Gading Raya.

The signature hole just may be, the long par 4, Hole #16, measuring in at 380 metres from the regular tee’s. Slightly uphill and often into the breeze, the hole requires a straight and long strike with the big stick and a stream runs all the way down the right side of the fairway and out of bounds guards the left hand side. The second shot plays up towards a large, long in length green, shared with, the front nine’s Hole #6. A confident drive and an accurate second shot just may reward the golfer with a well crafted regulation par on Gading Raya’s handicap index one hole.

Gading Raya is by no means a tough course, but it is a well designed championship course, providing challenging golfing conditions for both its members, regular visitors and avid golfers who come for their famous greens and all-round great playing conditions.

FacilitiesThe golfing experience continues after the 18th hole at Gading Raya. With a spacious, fully carpeted locker room, including grooming, prayer and massage rooms to freshen up and rejuvenate after hot playing conditions. Adjacent to the locker room is the spa room, well equipped with jacuzzi, sauna and whirlpool facilities. We found the upstairs bar to be a real gem in the clubhouse. With a cosy yet suitably private feel, members and their guests can enjoy top quality hospitality food and refreshments, whilst reminiscing about their adventures from the golf course. On the ground floor of the clubhouse is the large spacious restaurant, with large glass windows overlooking the golf course, serving a wide range of international and local food, to satisfy even the hungriest of golfers. There is also a well equipped pro shop, where all leading brands of golf attire, equipment and club merchandise can be purchased at competitive prices.

Special mention must be made for the driving range and short game areas on-site. A multi-bay range play towards a series of island greens amongst a shimmering lake is a unique driving range, both fun and useful for practice purposes. There is even a golf custom fitting store where golfers can tinker with and purchase the latest custom shafts and grips for their golf equipment.

Club members can enjoy a well equipped sports club, with a state of the art gym, spacious aerobics rooms; a haven to prepare themselves for a healthier lifestyle and better physical golfing conditions. Family members who don’t play golf will be equally entertained at Gading Raya, which also has tennis courts and a large swimming pool completing the country club setting with facilities to be enjoyed by all members of the family, golfers and non-golfers.

CaddiesGading Raya offers the best of both worlds. Attractive and competent female caddies, as well as a large number of male caddies many

Gading Raya has several chipping and putting areas by the clubhouse where golfers can practice their short games.

of them competent golfers themselves, for those who prefer the male caddy. Team Golf Indonesia were suitably impressed with our caddies on the day; two young, energetic, attentive and pleasant female caddies accompanied us for a day of golf under the hot Tangerang sun. It is humbling to know that even in the middle of the fasting period, caddies are more than ready for us non-fasting golfers to enjoy a day of golf at this top class venue. Male caddies are more often chosen by the regular walkers of the course and single digit players and pros.

AmbienceThe management have done a stellar job in providing and maintaining Gading Raya as a championship standard golf venue, whilst providing club members with great golf

and country club facilities. Its location in the heart of the Gading Serpong residential district and business area provides members with the perfect venue to entertain clients and friends, with a professional yet not too formal atmosphere. The quality of the driving range and short game practice areas allows serious golfers looking to improve their handicaps an ideal venue to improve

all aspects of their game before heading out onto the course.

Value Due to its members-only policy at weekends, Gading Raya’s management have ensured visitors can freely visit and enjoy the course during weekdays for very affordable prices. Q Golf and Prestige

golfers are well cared for, with weekday rounds costing a little over Rp. 300K all in with these golf card memberships. Despite its exclusivity, juniors, seniors and ladies are all taken care of with very affordable green fees midweek. Contact the golf club to confirm the days and prices and if you happen to qualify for one of these groups.

Cikarang, July 2014 — With an aggregate score of seven-under-par (206), James Bowen of USA won the 6th edition of the Indonesian Golf Tour at Jababeka Golf & Country Club. As a special invite player, a couple weeks before his defense of the ADT Jakarta Classic at Imperial Klub Golf, Bowen made a statement by shooting 68 with four birdies in his winning final round, maintaining his lead from the second round, to lift the trophy.

“It’s a tricky course. The greens are firm and playing here before during the LINC Group Jakarta Invitational earlier this year helped me with my game plan. I was very patient and didn’t make mistakes so that is great. I’m an invited player, so I wanted to play well. I wanted to give myself a good chance. I played well in the final round. I made one bogey today, but I’m quite pleased with my game,” said James.

“Many thanks to the Indonesian Golf Tour, the game of golf is growing here in Indonesia. A lot of young players are improving. I played with two of the young players today (Joshua Andrew Wirawan and Putra Abhinawa Sahari) and they both have a very good game. I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to play,” added James.

Finishing just behind Bowen was Joshua Andrew Wirawan who came in second with a total score of two-under par 211. Local player Joshua was impressive all tournament, especially after leading the field after round one.

Rory Hie returned to the domestic tour, and finished in a creditable 7th place, and it is fair to say he is struggling to find his impressive form of 2013. Order of Merit leader George Gandranata surprisingly finished well back in 11th place, surprisingly considering his second place finish here at Jababeka in the ADT’s Jakarta Invitational earlier in the year amongst a stronger field of ADT players.

In the amateur stakes, Korean locally based player Joeh Se Ik and female

Rivani Adelia Sihotang again proved their quality securing best male and female amateur at this event. Jo Se Ik finished with eight-over-par (217) while Rivani finished up with an impressive one-under par 212. Female player Juriah pushed Rivani all the way during the final round, and despite a double-bogey on Hole #3 Rivani still went on to claim her third victory as best female amateur this year.

“It was so tense! It feels like you are in a race, but I made it to the finish line. The course is amazing. It helped me to improve my skills for sure. I learnt a lot from this course,” said Rivani.

“I’m happy to be able to win, but I don’t want to be cocky. My plan is to become professional and go on to the LPGA tour. So glad that now we have the local tour (Indonesian Golf Tour) for amateurs like me to gain more experience and skills on this tour. We move around and play all kinds of different courses, helping us to read and learn about each courses characteristics,” added two-time Best Female Amateur Champion Rivani Adelia Sihotang.

The Indonesian Golf Tour at Jababeka Golf & Country Club is the 6th in a series of twelve three-day events that are being hosted by selected courses in the greater Jakarta area with each boasting Rp. 200,000,000 in prize purses.

All 12 events earn ranking points for participating golf professionals and amateurs, setting the stage for the Road to the Indonesian Golf Championship to be hosted at Rawamangun Golf Club on December 10th – 13th 2014. At this final event, the Top 30 players and Top 10 amateurs will play for the grand prize purse of Rp. 500,000,000 with all Golf professionals guaranteed winnings in the four-day tournament, as well as the three top professionals securing themselves a country exemption spot on the Asian Development Tour for the 2015 season.

GOLF INSIGHT BY PAUL PRENDERGAST

To say he’s been to hell and back is probably over-dramatising things just a little, but the pathway to glory Rory McIlroy was marching inexorably down has taken a few twists and turns these past few years.

Any adversity endured in the courtroom, over equipment changes, course walk-offs and relationship issues played out in full view of the world only seem to have galvanised the Northern Irishman, who achieved his ‘career highpoint’ with a composed performance to claim victory in The 2014 Open Championship at Hoylake.

With the chance to join Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only men to have won three majors by age 25, McIlroy fought hard to avoid any complacency that taking a six-stroke lead into the final round might evoke, shooting a one-under 71 for a 17-under-par total to complete his ‘comeback’ to the very highest stage. “It feels absolutely incredible,” McIlroy said of his first Open title and third major. “It’s sort of cool that they put your name on there (the Claret Jug) even before you get it. So that was a nice little touch.”

McIlroy also gave credence to the age-old saying ‘there is a first time for everything’, proving that he is capable of winning a major by a margin of less than eight strokes with ‘only’ a two-stroke victory over Sergio Garcia and playing partner, Rickie Fowler.

McIlroy’s first two major titles at the 2010 US Open and 2012 PGA Championship had been dominant romps, but despite the margin being only two on this occasion, this was no less of a dominant performance from a player without peer when in this kind of fettle.

“It’s been an incredible week. I’m happy I gave myself enough of a cushion today, because there was a lot of guys coming at me, especially Sergio and Rickie. Just to be sitting here and looking at this thing and having my name on it, it’s a great feeling.”

“It obviously hasn’t sunk in yet. I’m going to enjoy it and let it sink in tonight in the company of my friends and family.”

On the brighter side of the luck of the draw with what little adverse weather there was, McIlroy skated to the lead with

matching 66s over the opening two rounds and stamped his class with eagles on the 16th and 18th holes in round three, when no-one else in the field had eagled either hole that day, to demoralise the field as they headed home for the evening.

It was then up to the chasers to go for broke on a glorious final day and while Garcia (66), Fowler (67) and the rest of the pack responded brilliantly to the task at hand, McIlroy was always able to keep them at a comfortable arm’s length.

“Rory just kind of distanced himself from the field a bit, especially with his finish yesterday.” Fowler said, after his third top-five result in a row in majors this year, “It’s hard to be disappointed about it, because it was such a great week. I’ll take 15-under in a lot of majors and sit there and wait in the clubhouse.”

“Congratulations to Rory, he played awesome. And it was just kind of fun to throw a few shots at him coming in. To see him win was pretty cool. Just the walk up there on 18, it’s definitely up there as the best walk in golf. And to be there with Rory in the final group when he was about to win was special.”

American Jim Furyk shot a final round 65 to claim fourth outright while world No. 1 Adam Scott, who had the tougher side of the draw in the early rounds, at last found his ‘A’ game with a closing 66 to tie for fifth alongside countryman Marc Leishman, who went one better with a closing 65.

The return to Liverpool for the 143rd Open Championship was also significant for the return of Tiger Woods, the 2006 champion at this venue, who had played just two competitive rounds on Tour since back surgery in March. Woods excited the fans and no doubt himself, with an opening round 69 before fading to finish at six-over par ahead of just three players who made the weekend cut.

38-year-old Woods might have been amused or bemused at being ‘dusted’ by 64-year-old five-time champion Tom Watson, the man he more than likely needs to impress over the next few months if he wants to play an 8th Ryder Cup this September under Watson’s stewardship.

Watson finished five strokes ahead of Woods and continued to build on his already considerable legend in the twilight of his career with a closing 68 (to Woods’ 75) to again show many of the ‘kids’ how’s it’s done.

McIlroy’s status as the ‘Champion Golfer of the Year’ as bestowed to The Open winner, now has him ranked statistically behind only Scott in the world pecking order. The two duelled down the wire at last year’s Australian Open at Royal Sydney, which McIlroy won on the final hole for his only win of 2013, and it is mouthwatering to consider what players with the skill and charisma of McIlroy and Scott at the peak of their games could inspire each other to achieve in the near future.

Mouth-watering also is the occasion that has now been set up at the 2015 Masters Tournament where, like Phil Mickelson at this year’s US Open, McIlroy will embark on his first opportunity to claim a rare career Grand Slam of all four major championships.

Only five players — Nicklaus, Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan and Gary Player — have ever won all four. Becoming the first European to join this exalted group was the stuff of McIlroy’s dreams at the start of the week at Royal Liverpool but is now so close, he can taste it.

"I definitely hope I do (win the Grand Slam)," he said. "I've really found my passion again for golf. Not that it ever dwindled, but it's what I think of when I get up in the morning and it's what I think of when I go to bed at night."

“I just want to be the best golfer that I can be. I know if I can do that, then trophies like this are within my capability.”

“I'd love to win a lot more of them and, even though there's one left this year that I desperately want to try and win, I'm looking forward to next April and trying to complete the career Grand Slam."

It would barely raise an eyebrow to suggest that not since Woods in his prime have we seen a player as well equipped to achieve the feat as McIlroy.

FootnoteThe tears of joy that McIlroy’s mother, Rose, shed as she greeted her son behind the 18th green provided a touching scene and the beginning of a moving celebration with other family and friends that spilled into the scorer’s hut.

Those tears would now be forming a river of joy with husband Gerry collecting at the last available opportunity on a 10-year-old bet that his son would win The Open by age 25.

£200,000, give or take a few quid, will buy a lot of celebratory pints of Guinness back home in Holywood, Northern Ireland.

“Simply Irresistible” — McIlroy Stamps his class at Royal Liverpool

“I just want to be the best golfer that I can be. I know if I can do that, then trophies like this are within my capability.”

What was your inspiration to create and develop your very own golf fashion label?Actually, I was raised in a family through my father and grandfather, which was always involved in the textiles and garments business. From a very young age I would travel to Tanah Abang market and sell clothes and materials, so I had many years of experience learning about the garment industry, like what materials make good quality clothing. Since those early days selling clothes in Tanah Abang, I have always been interested in entrepreneurship. Later in life, whilst working for Chevron in Riau, I had my own store part-time selling garments at a local mall stocking all kinds of brands. With my upbringing in the garment business and experience there came a time when I decided to create my own brand.

Why golf? Are there not better markets to sell clothing in?A few years back, my family and I returned to Jakarta after an oil and gas work placement in Venezuela. I had picked up golf as a hobby and leisure activity during my posting there. Upon returning, it became very obvious that it was impossible to find affordable, decent whilst stylish golf clothes. This convinced me to create my very own Indonesian golf fashion brand, to provide top quality golf clothing for golfers here in Indonesia at good prices and with plenty of style and colours.

What was the biggest obstacle you faced whilst building the Birdie Golf brand? For several years before production we experimented and learnt about manufacturing sports polo shirts. Finding the right fabric was rather challenging. Playing golf in Indonesia’s hot climate, it is essential for us to provide our customers with a comfortable and durable material which will perform well in this tropical climate. It took us several years before we settled on a combination of fabrics, which is as good if not better than international materials like ‘climacool’ and ‘drifit’. We launched Birdie Golf with leather golf gloves as our first product. Indonesia produces real

leather of top quality and our chosen leather and golf glove design was received well by the local golfing community. Having succeeded in golf glove production we had the confidence to step up and start producing golf shirts using high quality and durable materials.

Say I am a golf event organizer and I am in the process of finalizing my upcoming corporate golf event. How many different golf shirt options and colour combinations can you offer at Birdie Golf?Currently, our marketing team can offer 12 different golf shirt options to choose from with different colours and themes, available along with a wide range of sizes from kids-ladies, men's XS–XL. We use international sizes, so a Birdie Golf size small will be the same as a Nike or Ashworth size small. After three days of choosing your preferred colour and theme your golf shirts will be ready.

How much would a Birdie Golf shirt cost per item?It depends on the quantity and design. In the retail stores Birdie golf shirts sell for between Rp. 400,000 – Rp. 500,000 per piece. For a corporate large order, the shirts can be as much as 55% off the retail price, which can be as low as Rp. 200,000 per piece, including your tournament or company logo.

What is one of your strengths as an up-and-coming golf brand, producing high quality locally made golf clothing? We can provide our corporate and tournament organizers golf shirts on request, from a wider selection of designs, motifs and colours in as little as three days from receiving the order.

Do you sponsor any local Indonesian professional golfers?Being an Indonesian brand it would make me very proud if Indonesian professional golfers choose and enjoy wearing Birdie products. I had a friend who was close to successful Indonesian professional Andik Mauludin. I approached him during the 2013 Indonesian Masters and offered him

a supply of Birdie clothing for the remainder of the season. To this day Andik and I are good friends and he enjoys wearing and endorsing Birdie golf clothes, and is more than happy with our arrangement. Andik is a charismatic golfer and I feel our bright coloured clothing really suits his personality.

Your main retail outlet is at Senayan Driving Range. Where else can Birdie products be found? We have 10 other retail points including pro-shops at Riverside, PSP, Gunung Geulis, Bogor Raya, Pondok Indah, Senayan National, Fit One stores at Pondok Indah and Pringgondani, United store (Cilandak driving range) and Nine Hole UG floor Bellagio Mall, Kuningan. We will be looking to provide our products in more stores during 2014.

ON TOUR LINC GROUP JAKARTA CLASSIC 2014

Ireland’s Niall Turner the Champion at Imperial

Jakarta, July 2014: Niall Turner of Ireland survived a bumpy final round to win his first Asian Development Tour (ADT) title after posting a one-over-par 73 at the US$60,000 Linc Group Jakarta Classic on Friday.

The 30-year-old Turner held a five-shot lead heading into the last day but had to fend off the strong challenge from Englishman Peter Richardson before winning by one shot with a 10-under-par 278 total at the Imperial Klub Golf.Richardson, who has one ADT victory, settled for second following a 69 while Thai talent Annop Tangkamolprasert ended his campaign in third position after shooting a 68 for a 281 total.

Turner dropped two bogeys on holes two and three but swiftly recovered with two birdies before the turn. A bogey on 14 narrowed the Irishman’s lead to one but he held on to his narrow advantage to win the second edition of the Linc Group Jakarta Classic.

The victory was exceptionally sweet for Turner who had been struggling with a hip injury in the last three years.“I really needed this win. It has been quite grim in the last few years because I had a bad hip injury since 2011. That was the only thing holding me back. I was born with a defect in my hip and had to go through some surgery. My hip feels great now although I had to make slight changes in my swing."

“Winning a tournament really gives you the confidence. It will be an important few weeks on the ADT and I really want to get back on the Asian Tour. Hopefully I can stay healthy and continue my form,” said Turner, who won US$10,500 and earned six Official World Golf Ranking points.

Richardson, who was bogey-free in his last 45 holes, held his head high after pushing Turner to the limits, but he was disappointed not to take the outright win or force a play-off when he returned with four straight pars.

“I played great without any bogeys. I had a few birdies and put him under pressure. I was close but I couldn’t quite make the putts when I needed to. I had chances on the last four holes to make birdies but didn’t quite get the line or pace right."

“My goal was try to put him under pressure and I did. I’m pleased with the way I played and fought out there,” said the Englishman, who won his first ADT title in Malaysia in 2012.

This season, the ADT will reward the top five players on the final Order of Merit with playing rights for the 2015 Asian Tour season. Previously, the top-three players were offered Asian Tour cards since the ADT’s launch in 2010.

Indonesian golf fans were happy to see the performance of the local Indonesian professionals compared to their play during last year's Jakarta Classic. In this year’s event, five Indonesian players featured in the Top 20, a huge improvement compared to a disappointing none last year. Special mention must go towards this year's newly formed Indonesian Golf Tour, which is providing local players a fantastic platform of top quality local professional events where the Indonesian professionals are maintaining a high standard of golf throughout the season with good prize money to be won.

With the Indonesian Golf Tour seeming to be a success so far, it should not be long before Indonesia can witness their

GOLF GEEK BY SIMON REYNOLDS

The Golfclick.net website is a new golf reservation portal

where golfers from Indonesia and worldwide come to find

and book unsold tee times for golf courses in Indonesia. The

website is the project of two young Indonesian golfers and

entrepreneurs Albert Kosasih (28) and Ebert Wijaya (27).

Albert and Ebert have been close friends ever since their

studies in the US at The University of Portland and Portland

State respectively.

Whilst studying in the Portland area the two would often

enjoy and explore golf courses in the US via online tee time

booking sites where American golfers could freely shop

around for the best deals for tee times online and within a

few clicks have a tee time reserved for their next rounds.

Upon returning to their homeland of Indonesia, the two

decided to set up and pioneer Indonesia’s very first online

golf reservation site; www.golfclick.net was born!

Golf Indonesia sat down with Albert Kosasih and Ebert Wijaya to learn about their website and to see what we can expect in the future from this new project.

So, Albert can you remind us how golf click came about and the inspiration you had to create this site for golfers in Indonesia?Albert: Basically, Ebert and I were golf buddies at our time studying in Portland, Oregon. Actually, I am thankful to Ebert for introducing me to the game. Every time we played golf there we booked our tee time through a website called golfnow.com; it's all there, you can choose the golf course, the tee time and the prices. When I came back here to Jakarta, I found it a little troublesome to book my own tee times. You had to call each golf course, check availability, confirm with friends, the whole process to book a tee time

took half an hour or 45 minutes. This made us think, let us create our own golf portal / website just like we used in the US, where all the golf courses are integrated and Indonesian golfers can shop and book tee times online and save a lot of time and money.

Having browsed the website, golf click appears to offer golfers decent savings and discounts for their prospective tee times. Potentially how much do golfers save when using your site?Albert: Our mission is to sell unsold, available tee times. In the weekdays in the Jabodetabek region, approximately 70% - 75% of tee times remain unsold. We plan to have as many of these available tee times on our website for golfers to book on short term notice or last minute, for savings of up to 40% depending on the golf course or tee time. The closer you book to the tee time, the cheaper the price.

Currently on the website, golfers can book from 14 golf courses in Jabodetabek, three in Bandung and one course in Bali. Can you reveal any exciting news about other golf courses you will be adding to the website shortly?Ebert: Currently we are in discussion with Ria Bintan, a majestic golf course designed by Gary Player in Bintan. Also we are in talks with Bali National in Nusa Dua and Senayan National in Jakarta, both of which would be popular golf courses on our website for our regulars.

Golfclick.net seems to be improving all the time, are there any new features that you have added recently?Ebert: We have one new feature on our website, ‘group reservations.’ It’s a service where you can book golf tee times for parties of eight people or more. The feature is a one-stop easy way for large golf groups to contact us and

we can take care of your accommodation, transportation and most importantly your tee times, all on our website. This new feature will be very useful from website visitors from outside of Indonesia looking to book a golf holiday in Indonesia, without the need of a travel agent per se.

Where would you like to see Golfclick.net in two years from now?Albert: In two years' time we would like to provide our website visitors with tee time from golf courses all over Indonesia. We would like to see more visitors regularly using our site, not just in Indonesia but from golfers worldwide. We hope to have completed our mobile website by then, so golfers can access and book tee times form their iPhones, Androids and Blackberry mobile phones.

Golfclick.net has been active online since 2013. With your negotiating with Indonesian golf courses, have you seen a gradual increase in green fee prices?Ebert: Indeed prices have steadily increased year by year, but I feel this is reflective to inflation rates. Yet, although prices have risen, the price of golf here in Indonesia has become cheaper for foreigners as the Indonesian Rupiah at times has weakened. For US$50 visitors can enjoy golf courses designed by Greg Norman, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus; this would be highly unlikely in other countries.

Golf Indonesia are more than impressed with this one- stop portal for golfers, offering available tee times in Indonesia at cheaper prices using a simple, quick booking service. Log on now to www.golfclick.net and book your next tee time. You won't be disappointed and you’ll save some valuable time that you can use at the driving range!

INVESTMENT/ FINANCE BY FRANK VAN LERVEN

Clarifying Financial Services on Offer(with an eye on expatriates)

In my first article I gave 10 tips when working with a financial advisor. This article follows on with clarifying what financial services there are on offer, especially with an eye on the expatriate. Both articles aim to strengthen the reader’s capabilities when working with a financial advisor and using financial services.

BANKERTraditionally, bankers assist you with deposits, short -term savings, mortgages and loans. Over the last decades they also offer investment services.

PAY ATTENTION! Banks are great for their traditional services but do not expect well thought out investment advice. Banks sell products. When a small client, you will deal with young advisors who need to gain experience.

PRIVATE BANKER The private banker often is a separate entity of the “mother” bank. Private banking is for the wealthy client and claims to handle all aspects of your personal finance. The level of service increases with the level wealth. Investment services are the core.

PAY ATTENTION! This exclusive service comes with a cost. High quality service is not a given; changes in management and personnel can affect this (level of service) for the better or worse.

BROKER Brokers will execute (investment) trade instructions. Brokers will give advice as well. The responsibility for the investment selected is with the client.

Discount broking, originated in the US about 30 years ago, part of the “do-it-yourself culture”. Very useful and cost effective for the investor. In discount broking, research is offered, but again, it is the investor who decides.

Lately, discount brokers also have started to offer advice and traditional brokers have started to offer low-cost online services.

PAY ATTENTION! It is not the broker’s business to really understand you or know you. The advice could also represent a bias in relationship to certain investments. So be clear and ensure that you are fully aware and informed about the investment positions you take.

ASSET MANAGERAlso called portfolio manager. The asset manager solely deals with the management of securities, such as stocks and bonds, whether held directly or through mutual funds, unit trusts or ETFs. Asset managers can be good for both the less informed and the well informed investor who has no time to manage financial investments himself. Asset managers will have in most case full discretion (to make the investment decisions).

PAY ATTENTION! Expertise and experience do not necessarily equate to ‘super performance’. Watch out for managers who claim to do so. Also, be aware of managers who shift and change often: this is counter productive and incurs costs. Good managers will produce results close to what ‘the markets’ give.

INSURANCE AGENTA true ‘agent’ will work for one insurance company only. Intermediary insurance advisory firms are able to represent several insurance companies. Whether agent or intermediary (to insurance companies) the product is insurance, among them: medical, accident, disability, critical illness house content, car and life insurance. It is the latter (life insurance), where investments can play a role.

PAY ATTENTION! It is always good to get quotations from several agents when working with individual agents. Pay very good attention to the after-service you can expect to get!

INVESTMENT ADVISORWill advise investments. In the context of financial services for expatriates, the investment will often be ‘wrapped’ in an insurance policy. Also, often “special” investment products are offered, with a guarantee of the capital sum and/or returns. Investment advisors may do a short checklist on your “needs”; but ultimately they are selling a product.

PAY ATTENTION! The insurance-linked products, while offering benefits, also add costs.Only sign up for savings plans and pension plans for a monthly amount and term (whether five, 10 year or more) which you are sure you can fulfil. Treat guaranteed investments with caution.

FINANCIAL PLANNERIn the purest form, a financial planner is a ‘product’ himself and charges by the hour. He will take a long and detailed fact find, based upon advice and recommendations follow. He is best seen as a coordinator working with specialists in investments, tax, pension and insurance. In reality, financial planners often do sell products such as insurance and investment services.

PAY ATTENTION! Although qualifications are no quality guarantee, it is good to know whether an advisor who presents himself as a financial planner is qualified or not. True financial planners may underrate how important performance of investments is.

FIDUCIARY AND SUITABILITY STANDARDS

Following on from the credit crisis, a lot of effort has been made to raise the level of standards offered. The highest standard is the fiduciary rule, going significantly further than the suitability rule, and not a realistic standard expatriates can expect from the services offered to them. Just so the reader understands the meaning of the terms:

The Fiduciary Rule (1)*The fiduciary rule stipulates that an advisor must place his or her interests below that of the client. It consists of a duty of loyalty and care, and means that the advisor must act in the best interest of his or her client at all times, with disregard to his own interests.

The Suitability Rule (2)*The suitability rule only details that the advisor has to reasonably believe that any recommendations made are suitable for clients, in terms of the client's financial needs, objectives and unique circumstances. His own interests need not to be below those of his client.

SOCIETY GOLF BY ANTHONY KING

Jakarta Inter-League

Round 5A Special MentionAll of the players applauded the news that Tika (Tin Cups)had been awarded a 100% golfing scholarship in USA.

Wari (Tin Cups) was delighted to inform us that she has been selected to represent PNG.

Match ReportsCloggies, up against their nemesis team (Tin Cups) saw singles Disney Dave return from his vacation ready for battle with Joseph, and what a battle that went to the wire with Joseph just holding onto the one hole advantage. Captain-of-the-day Bags thought that his previous month’s victory was purely because he is a better singles player but it turned out to be a gross misapprehension on his part as Robot Rio eased to a 3:1 win. The big upset came from the pairings of Peter and Schumaker Hans as they overcame Wari/James by winning the final hole with both Cloggies shooting net birdies on hole #5. The Captain’s wife of Tin Cups (Siti) put in a rare appearance after jetting around Japan and partnered Ryan who has a power fade [or often huge slice]. Cloggies Captain-of-the-day BB played with Cigar Nic who turned out to be the lonesome male in this f light against Margo/Dani. A final hole birdie by BB closed out the win.

Cloggies 6: Tin Cups 4Second place Sandbaggers saw Grumpy panicking as he found himself three players short with only 30 minutes to tee off, fortunately the team was filled but no doubt this affected his game because he went down for his biggest ever defeat 5:4 against Neil. In the other singles, Martin watched in horror to see his Captain fall in such a manner and thought that it must be tradition to follow the leader as he capitulated 4:3 against Mark. The borrowed TeeSetter Chris paired up with Clay and saw his former teammates Sombrero/Chris as opposition. Despite receiving a bucketload of shots the Sandbaggers never got their noses in front but thanks to a couple of net birdies on the final hole they managed to come out all square. The TeeSet captain Peter paired with the Geoff against Joe/Will and the match oscillated between one up to one down throughout and fitting ended all square. Fernando/Shawn versus ‘The Hack’ Simon/ ‘Past of nearly everything’ Ric was a comfortable victory for TeeSet.

Sandbaggers 2: TeeSet 8The resurgence of JLI saw the Captain stand down in favour of his namesake but the big question was would MadDogs come out of the kennel fighting? The singles pitted Deon/Jiro take on Craig/Malcolm respectively. The former match went all the way with neither player showing true potential and a few holes won with bogey golf. The latter scorecard definitely ranks as the most bizarre scoring system I have ever witnessed but the result was a MadDogs win by 2:1. The ‘SourMash’ boys are back in town as they appear for the second consecutive month but sadly their previous glory came tumbling down as Ian/Robert took the game 2:1. Alice and Captain’s namesake took on Misa/Tahir and in yet another high scoring game the JLI came home 3:1. The final match was a high-handicap affair of Luis/Paul up against Jeff/Xeno where shots were traded but JLI never looked threatened and came home comfortably as 4:3 winners

JLI 6: Mad Dogs 4Having sent both their Captain and Vice Captain away, Sentul had to muddle through the pairings. 'Beamer' Bob

August Team of the Month Jakarta Loose Impediments (JLI) — back row (left – right) Paul Rodgers, Ed Bender Jr, Ed Bender Sr, Tom Alcedo (Blue Shirt), Jiro Kamifatokuehi — front row (left to right) Bradford Sincock, Alice Rodgers, Luis Silva, Deon Potgieter, Andrew Sincock

seemed to have refound his golfing skills and saw off Phil, although one has to ask what does Beamer’s score of ? on hole#1 mean? Howard was up against Stuart but never found any rythym, whilst Stuart only dropped a couple of shots on the first 9; the inevitable result was 4:2 in favour of Pocksia. Chris/Al saw the Potter family on the tee box which was a surprise as Keith is usually playing singles. However, the family pairing saw Sentul gain two more points and they wondered if either of the other pairings could bring home at least an all square result. Needless to say the answer was no and in fact the closest they came was from Paul/Andrew who only succumbed 3:2 against another family pairing of Captain John and Jane. In the other match Peter/Mike were right-royally drubbed 6:5 by Jeremy/Glen.

Pocksia 6: Sentul Swingers 4

Team of the Month: Jakarta Loose Impediments (JLI)Originating in the mid-90s and called the US Embassy Team, as the team consisted of mostly embassy personnel with a few members from various companies. After a few years and with the rotation of embassy personnel, the

number of embassy golfers reduced. As the US Embassy Team lost most of their golfers and as others entered, it was considered sensible to change the name and with the mix of people playing it became known as The Jakarta Loose Impediments [JLI]. Previously the team had won the league but more recently JLI has often struggled to field a full group. With the new Captain (Brad Sincock who is contactable at [email protected]) taking over and believing in the matchplay format, he has put in place some strong building blocks. This is showing through and now JLI has moved into second place in the table. Now with a group of 20 players, things look bright for the future, but as always Brad is looking for new people to join the team.

Inter-League Points SystemEach match between teams is played out by three doubles games and two singles games. A doubles victory is awarded two points, a draw one point. For a singles game, two points are awarded for victory and one point for a draw. A Grand Total of 10 points is available per match.

Technology for the Green-Keepers

SOCIETY GOLF BY DAN RICHARDS

From this season’s hottest golf clubs to swing analyzers, to the global live stream of major tournaments, technology is changing the way we play and enjoy the game of golf. But did you know technology is also revolutionizing the way golf courses are being managed and cared for?

On a recent visit to Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore, home to two of Asia’s most elite courses, Golf Indonesia discovered a fascinating world of sensors, machinery and real-time data that are shaping the future of golf course management. Considered by many the leaders in technology implementation, Sentosa Golf Club’s technology not only helps to keep playing conditions pristine but also identify potential problems before they take root.

The starting point of Sentosa’s technology usage are the smartphones that each member of the maintenance team is equipped with. From these devices, individuals can monitor soil conditions, turn on specific sections of the wireless irrigation system and activate cooling fans, literally from anywhere in the world. In addition to having a control panel in the palm of their hands, the staff are able to easily share pictures and videos of course conditions at team meetings; a huge benefit for maintaining clear communication across a team of multinationals.

Beyond the smartphones, in the maintenance team’s command centre are computers that collect and monitor real-

time data from a network of ground sensors strategically placed in the tee-boxes, fairways and greens of Sentosa’s 36 holes. These sensors monitor water conditions, temperature of greens and salinity of the soil. By understanding how water fattens up grass, resulting in a slower ball roll, temperature influences grass growth and salinity affects soil health the maintenance staff is able to control the course conditions and eliminate traditional trial and error, resulting in a better playing experience and cost savings.

To support the extensive network of ground sensors is a system that monitors real-time weather conditions at Sentosa. What makes this particular weather centre unique is that the data it collects is automatically sent to a firm in Australia that analyzes the weather patterns to identify conditions that are likely to influence in the growth of unwanted fungi and grass infections. By taking a proactive approach the team is able to modify their watering, temperature management and soil treatment programs to reduce the risk of damage from invasive soil microbes.

To observe Sentosa’s technology at work first-hand, one only has to simply play a round, as golfers encounter large fans around the greens and tee boxes that

make up the Sub Air system. The primary purpose of the Sub Air system is to aerate and remove moisture of the short grass, which promotes a healthier and stronger playing surface. Given the humid and arid location of Sentosa it is surprising that more golf courses around the region have not adopted the Sub Air system themselves. For players concerned about a potential distraction from the fans, fear not as Sentosa has sensors that shut the fans off as players approach the tee-boxes to ensure a distraction-free shot.

On the last stop of our behind-the-scenes tour we encountered an incredible workshop filled with mowers, tractors and machinery that would make the inner kid in all of us come to life. While impressive in scale, the technology highlight of the workshop is how each piece of machinery wirelessly relays its run time to yet another monitoring system. By managing equipment usage, the maintenance team is able to reduce the time equipment is offline, automatically order parts when needed and digitally log maintenance records, which adds to the equipment’s resale value.

As we concluded our visit to Sentosa Golf Club, we were reminded that while technology allows for a more efficient means to managing a course, we must not forget about the dedicated maintenance staff that rises before the sun each day to make it all possible. Ultimately, the latest network of sensors, computers and wireless technology are a powerful source of information for any course superintendent, but together they will never be able to replace the human touch, vision and experience required to bring a golf course to life.

Large fans are positioned behind the greens and tee boxes at Sentosa Golf Club: part of the Sub Air System which helps to provide world class playing conditions all year round.

GOLF FITNESS BY JOHN ROZELLE

Using the Overhead Squat to build Shoulder Mobility, Core Strength, Balance, and Leg Strength

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SQUAT

Golf is a game of athleticism and technical skill. While we can practice the technical skill at the driving range and through countless hours out on the various beautiful courses here in Indonesia, it’s difficult to build athleticism. Athleticism is that special combination of strength, coordination, balance, reflexes, quickness, etc., that we often associate with “god-given talent”. It requires just the right attention and variety to improve our athleticism, unlike technical skills that require lots of repetition.

Fundamental to most athletic movements, and certainly golf, is generating power through the hips. A consistent, strong and accurate swing requires excellent translation of power from the legs, through the hips, channelled properly through the core into the arms through the shoulders. It’s a complex movement. Ideally, we build athleticism through complimentary complex movements that activate similar muscle pathways.

The squat is indisputably the most fundamental of all strength movements. Think of a baby. Once we learn to hold our heads up and roll over, we turn our focus to the squat, which leads to crawling and eventually standing. There are many ways we can enhance the basic squat to achieve athletic benefits. For improving our golf game I believe the Overhead Squat is the most beneficial.

Let’s build our technique first before we consider adding weight. This is the same as learning a proper golf swing before — if ever — trying to swing hard. Take a driver. Hold it up over your head so that your hands are spread wide and you have 12-20cm of space between the top of your head and the shaft. You don’t want your hands so wide that it pinches on your wrist, nor so close that the shaft is over 20cm above your head (refer to Step 1 picture below). Next, bring your shoulder blades together as if you were pinching a finger between them. This creates a shelf behind your neck which will bear the weight of the club. Then, rotate your elbows so that the insides of your elbows are facing forward. Lastly, make sure the shaft is lined up with the crown of your head, which is just behind the middle of your head and over your heels.

Your feet should be straight ahead, placed about shoulder width apart. To initiate the squat, first, put your buttocks as far back as you can. When you’ve stuck your rear out as far as you can, then lower it until your hips are below your knees. Hold at the bottom for a count of two, then stand (refer to Step 2 picture below). Work to keep the shaft of the club over the crown of your head, shoulder blades pinched, elbows turned forward and your chest up. If you have writing across your shirt, someone should be able to read it the whole time. Don’t let your chest lower to your knees.

It helps to push the knees out to the side as you squat. So at the bottom of the squat your knees should be just outside the outside edges of your feet.

Most people will find this challenging for their shoulders, hips, balance, and, after 20+ repetitions or so, their legs. Your shoulders and hips should have the flexibility to achieve an upright torso position. By tightening your abs, engaging your shoulder blades and pushing your knees out you can help engage the position.

Complete 50 of these as a warm up before the driving range. Then again, after your work on the range or round of golf, complete another 100. This is also a great non-golf day exercise. Try 10 sets of 20. Once you are comfortable holding this position through 200 squats with just a driver, you can begin adding a little weight. Use a simple 15 or 20kg barbell at first, without any extra weight. Always ensure you’re achieving the optimal positioning and technique before adding any more weight.

Remember, like our golf swing, the goal is to move gracefully through the movement. Don’t sacrifice movement quality for weight or you will have lost the majority of the benefit and you may even develop detrimental habits. Happy squatting!

Step 1: Getting ready and in position for the squat. Step 2: The squat in action. Stick your rear out as far as you can, then lower it until your hips are below your knees. Hold at the bottom for a count of two, then stand.

CURIOUS TALES FROM THE GOLF COURSE BY MATTHEW NINAN

Tiger's Sundays in Red

Anyone who watches golf will know Tiger Woods always wears red on Sunday. I think by now it is fairly well known that for Tiger to wear a red or a predominantly red polo shirt on the Sundays of a professional golf tournament is a given, it’s like his lucky charm.

At least that is what he seems to believe, although he once explained it like the following: "I wear red on Sundays because my mum thinks that that's my power colour, and you know you should always listen to your mum."

Probably he might have started like that, but when he saw that he was regularly winning in the reds, which he did during his initial years, he must have begun to believe that it must really be true. To add to that there are some quirky studies saying that several years ago scientists from the University of Durham in England found that, competitors and teams that wore predominantly red coloured jerseys won more often than those who wore blue or white!

If that be the case, why did Germany win the coveted World Cup 2014 less than a fortnight ago draped in white? And wasn’t

the other finalist Argentina in full blue, even dark blue? Sometimes we must take scientific studies with a pinch of salt…

Let us rewind. It’s the British Open 2014, at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England. As we all know now Tiger wasn’t particularly doing anything spectacular for whatever reasons. In fact he was struggling off and on. But still fighting. On the golf course, at least, we know that he never gives it up. Come Sunday 20th July, the fourth and final day of the British Open, at the end of third round he (219) was 19 shots behind the leader, the ultimate winner Rory McIlroy (200). On a links course with that kind of a deficit you can never imagine to win and that too fighting a golf prodigy in McIlroy. Either Tiger had to play supremely well or Rory should have been at his absolute dumbest form to give a chance to Tiger to establish the validity of his superstition or belief that his red shirt would carry him through.

But the point that struck me most was that even on this Sunday with the scoreboard reading what it was, Tiger walked up to the first tee-box in his usual red. With 19 shots

off the leader on the start of the fourth day, Tiger in his lucky red attire; was it his height of hopefulness or height of confidence?

End of the day he struggled to finish with a 75. That left him a staggering 22 shots

behind McIlroy before he even teed off.

Well, if you ask me, I'm more than certain that Woods would have exactly the same number of wins even if he wore parrot green or baby blue every Sunday.

In these modern times, getting the time to practice your golf game can be extremely difficult. Because of this, making the most of your practice time has become even more important. Having a very simple practice structure will help you to target the key areas of your game that require the most improvement, and to effectively practice the clubs you use the most on the course.

Body Warm-UpThis is an area that is forgotten by most players. For many people, a lot of the day is spent in an office chair or car, resulting in poor posture and muscle usage that are extremely important to hit the ball well. Performing some very simple stretching exercises is a great way to prepare the body for the golf swing.

Hip, Upper Body, Shoulder StretchBend down with your left leg in front of you, holding a club above your head. Slowly tilt you upper body to the left side and hold between 20-30 seconds. Then repeat the same for the other side.

Angel Wings StretchUsing a wall, place your heels about half the length of your feet away from the wall. Lean your hips, shoulders and head against the wall, then place your arms to the side of your body and lift up your toes and hold between 20-30 seconds. A great exercise to improve your posture at address.

Push Stretch (Pic 3)Slowly extend your arms and lower body forward in a thrusting motion, feeling like you are pushing against a large object. Hold for 20-30 seconds. Great stretch for maintaining core stability.

X Factor Stretch (Pic 4)Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart with your body straight, place your elbows close to the sides of your body. Try and turn your upper body as much as you can while keeping your hips still. Hold for 20-30 seconds. A great stretch for the lower back and hips in the backswing.

Cross Over Stretch (Pic 5)Stand straight with your feet only a little apart whilst holding a club with your arms extended in front of you. Raise your left leg as you turn your arms and club to the left

ChippingAlways start your practice with some chipping shots. The benefits of doing this are vast compared to many golfers I see starting their practice using mid irons or their woods. It's a great way to slowly warm-up the swing, generate good coordination between the arms and hips, and to feel good contact from the ball.

What Clubs to Practice?Think about what clubs you use the most on the course. Most amateurs will use their driver to tee-off, rescue/fairway or long iron for the second or possible third shot, short irons for pitch shots and chipping shots, and of course the putter. If you fall into this category, try and tailor your practice around these clubs. Don't get stuck using one club for a long time either, you can mix it up once you feel you have warmed up correctly.

Technique Practice vs Pressure PracticeThis is probably the main reason most golfers can hit the ball well on the driving range, but then completely fall apart on the course. We all must practice our technique for each part of the game, but try and include pressure practice as part of your structure. This is done by trying to replicate the feelings we have on the course to our practice.

For example, pick targets during your practice and set a goal of performing the task three times in a row. If you miss your target before you have completed the three, start again. The pressure starts to increase with each ball, resulting in your technique improving under this pressure also.

also, hold for a moment then return to the centre and repeat on the right side. Repeat this a minimum of 10 repetitions. A very effective exercise to improve your balance during the swing.
