Today, Carole is surrounded by half-a-million books each day (“I’ll never retire”, she says with passion), with some books dating back to the 17 th century. Interestingly, many of the books have appeared as props in 20 movies, including 100 large boxfuls recently sent to Sydney - twice, after a re-shoot was required - for filming of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo diCaprio. The National Year of Reading 2012 may have got you thinking about reading more but, with so much available in every genre, you might have hit a ‘book’ block. Luckily for locals, Gold Coast City Council’s libraries offer - and encourage participation in - a variety of book clubs designed to clear reading pathways for all ages and interests. Open book clubs are held in six branch libraries every month: go along and talk about what you’ve read or are reading now or simply sit back and listen while discovering books others have enjoyed. The online book club, book coasters, is just that - online, with library staff and members, as well as book lovers worldwide, making reading recommendations. Audio book club is perfect for the vision impaired, with eBook club for those wanting to make the most of their eBooks or other mobile book reading devices. Book Bites Reading Club is good fun for 6-12 year olds. Well worth a mention too is the city-wide radio ABC 91.7 Coast FM Book Club, with books discussed on the program available from Hot Reads at local branch libraries. Something for everyone. Book clubs details - and plenty more - can be found in the Gold Coast Libraries’ Calendar of Events, available free at your local branch library. by Donna Mroz Turcic

CLIENT TESTIMONIALHEARD THE GOOD NEWS?“I am so overjoyed with the improvement in my life. I first noticed I was having difficulty hearing when there was more than one person talking. It wasn’t always clear and I kept asking them to repeat themselves.

Life is a lot easier now that I have my new digital hearing aids. The TV does not have to be so loud and I can hear everybody clearly even when they speak softly. I’m so much more confident socialising with friends.

The best part is my hearing aids are so small most people don’t know I’m wearing them.”

Frances – Carrara, QLD

The recent rapid advancement in hearing aid technology has resulted in hundreds of Gold Coast residents being fitted every week with state of the art digital hearing aids. The development of fully automatic settings now means that users can insert the device and forget about it. Optimum comfort is ensured as each aid is uniquely manufactured to match an impression taken of your ear.

A1 Discreet Hearing Aids specialise in the latest technology and provide a full range of in-the-ear and behind-the-ear hearing instruments, catering to all needs.

IT’S high time that Australia, the sunniest continenton earth, got serious about building big solar - notjust making announcements and putting plans in place- but actually getting large, base load built using so-lar thermal technology. The Big Solar objective is toget 2000 megawatts of solar power committed to bythe end of 2012. This is equivalent to the amount ofcoal-fired power being shut down in that timeframe. We need to replace this retiring coal power with re-newable energy - not gas. Longer term, 2000MW willput us firmly on the road to switching to 100% renew-able energy. The 100% renewable campaign has avision for Australia to undertake an urgent transitionto 100% renewable energy. ·The Tweed and lowerGold Coast region will be have its launch Wednes-day 14th March 7pm at Imperial Hotel, Murwillumbah. The speakers will be Al Gore trained climate presenterDr Fiona McCormick and Beyond Zero Emissionspresenter Dr Paul Taylor on the way Australia canswitch to 100% renewable energy with in 10 years.Presented by Tweed Climate Action Now. About1600 Australians arewaiting for a donor organat any given time.Last year, which marked thesecond full year of thegovernment’s reformagenda, there were 337organ donors - a 36 percent increase since 2009 -which helped 1001recipients. Figures releasedlast year showed whileNSW has the biggestregistered donor list inAustralia, in many casesfamily members decidedagainst donation. As a result, more fundingwill now be spent trainingdoctors and nurses to bemore empathetic whendealing with the grievingfamilies of potentialdonors. Dr Robert Herkes,NSW medical director ofDonateLife, a nationaltissue and organ donationnetwork, says moreeducation is needed to dealwith grief-stricken families.

“Data shows that in acutestress, intellectual ageregresses to that of aneight- to 12-year-old.When [family members]have the headspace tothink about donation, it’soften too late,” he says.Transplant surgeon DrDeborah Verran, fromadvocacy group ShareLife, says doctors working incountries with higherdonation rates have bettercommunication skills. Sheis heartened by thegovernment’s decision toinvest in educating staff.“It is not an easy job. Itrequires an incrediblyskilled person to go into theroom of a grieving familyand engage them,” shesays. Less than one percent of people who die inhospital are suitabledonors. Businesses, councils, and individualsare being urged to signup to host an Earth HourUnplugged event forneighbours, friends andfamily, with a focus on ‘nopower’ and sustainably-sourced food, that willraise funds for WWF-Australia’s vitalconservation work.

“This Earth Hour, hundreds of Unpluggedgrassroots events acrossthe country will mark thehour with acousticconcerts, sustainablepicnics, and larger eventsin parks, bars, andrestaurants acrossAustralia, helping to raisefunds for WWF-Australia’s crucial

Earth Hour Unpluggedevents are a greatopportunity to cometogether and show yourcommitment to a moresustainable future for theamazing planet that wecall home.”Everyone is encouragedto hold Earth HourUnplugged events for an‘hour of no power’ ,ranging from communitypicnics, acoustic musicevents and star gazingmeets to candle lit musicrecitals and sustainabledinner parties.Register to host a privateor community event andinvite your friends, familyand local community toparticipate, or search foran event in your local areaand make a donation onthe Earth HourUnplugged platform atw w w f . o r g . a u /earthhourunplugged.

A toolkit on the websiteprovides tips for hostinga sustainable event, posters and othermaterials to help promoteyour Earth HourUnplugged event. Earth hour takes place at8:30pm on Saturday 31stMarch around the world. It is especially importantfor Australians to becomeaware as our footprint inAustralia is too big, andwe have to reduce it.World Wildlife Fund’scurrent analysis showsthe environmentalfootprint of an averageAustralian is far beyonda sustainable level. Infact, we would need thenatural resources of 3.8planets if everyone onEarth had the sameenvironmental footprintas the average Australian! The single biggestcontributor to ourenvironmental footprintis carbon pollution. This pollution traps heatin the atmosphere drivingup land and seatemperatures which isdriving changes in ourclimate. In turn, climatechange is putting as muchas 25% of the world’s

species at risk ofextinction, making severeweather events moreextreme and morefrequent and causing sealevels to rise. There are simple changeseach of us can make to

reduce our pollution, liketaking more publictransport, switching toclean energy and usingless energy at home andat work. There’s a lotevery single one of us cando! Our actions add up.

Peoples’ per-ception of hearing aids appear to be somewhat outdated. My clients use hearing aids openly and ben-efit from staying more social and experiencing betterrelationships with those around them.” Says Aysha.Recent research indicates that untreated hearing lossmay lead to depression. Retirement for newbeginnings

Ray and MargaretShuck from Sorrentohad a great day outon an organised bustrip from the RoyalQueensland ArtSociety atBroadbeach to theGallery of Modern Artin Brisbane to seethe Matisse DrawingLife exhibit. With Rayan accomplishedartist himself andMargaret a keenpoet, this happycouple enjoys anyopportunity to take inthe arts.

The GFC forced manypeople to delay retirementbut what is it like forthose who have bitten thebullet? The lingering effects ofthe global financial crisisand fears about the Euro-pean debt crisis havetaken some of the glossoff the retirement dreamfor many Australians. In-stead of turning thosedreams into reality, manyolder workers are puttingoff retirement and aregrimly hanging on in theworkforce. There are still enoughtaking the plunge eachyear to show that, withina range of financial situa-tions, it’s still possible toenjoy a satisfying retire-ment in the present eco-nomic climate. If you’ve decided 2012 isthe year you would like tojoin them, you’re probablywondering how you’llmanage, both financiallyand with the big psycho-logical adjustment ofsuch a significant lifechange.Even with the most me-ticulous pre-retirementplanning, it is still goingto be a big step into theunknown.

How to retire in tough timesWill you be able to livecomfortably enoughwhen those figures on thepage translate to your newincome? Will your money last youfor the 20, or even 30,years you might need itto support you? Will youenjoy the new freedomand opportunities or doyou worry about howyou are going to fill yourtime? You might be wonderinghow others have coped ina similar situation. To findout, we have talked toone retiree to get a viewof the retirement experi-ence from the other side.By the time formermothercraft nurse JaneBodnar retired last July, she had accumulated just$50,000 in superannuationafter spending manyyears out of work raisingher four children. But unlike many of herfriends in better financialpositions, she says shehad no fears aboutwhether she would cope.“I just thought, ‘I’ll man-age, I’ll make this work forme,’” she says. “I’m not ascrooge but I have alwaysbeen fairly thrifty.” She now lives happily on

the full age pension, supplemented by a smallamount in allocated pen-sion from her super andsome assistance from herestranged husband.Jane says she saw a finan-cial adviser and didn’thesitate over the decisionto retire once she discov-ered she was able toqualify for the age pen-sion at 64.“I was getting very tiredbecause nursing is shiftwork and I had just spentthree years helping mymother before she died,”she says. “Like it or not,our energy levels start todeplete after a certain ageand I, personally, don’tthink it’s worth workingyourself to a frazzle.”She acknowledges thatshe’s better off than manyage pensioners, not onlybecause of the supple-mentary income she re-ceives but also becauseshe has been able to livein the family home and runa car she paid off beforeshe finished work. “With-out that, it would be veryhard but I still think theway I operate, I wouldsurvive on it - my motherdid,” she says.Jane says her philosophy

is to be satisfied withwhat she has. “Nursing isnot well paid,’’ she says.‘’As a mothercraft nurse,I was only earning about$24 an hour, so I havenever had a lot of moneyand we never had a lot ofmoney growing up, soI’ve always been quiteaccepting of the fact thatI would not be retiring on

much.”She says her life has beenenriched by the absenceof stress and the chanceto spend more time withher children and grand-children.“I am very happy,” shesays. “My children all liveaway from Sydney and Iwas getting frustrated atnot being able to see them

as much as I wanted to. Ihave also been blessedwith some wonderfulfriends and that is just alovely distraction. I cer-tainly don’t sit at hometwiddling my thumbs andgetting out the knitting.”So far, Jane has not hadto make any sacrifices tostay within her means -but that may come.

“I know I’m probably go-ing to have to be frugalwith food shopping andbe mindful of things likethe utilities bills and bemore conscious thatthings aren’t beingwasted,” she says. “But Istill shout myself to thetheatre and movies and Istill go out for an inexpen-sive meal with friends.”

WHETHER it’s sudoku or brain training games thereare plenty of options claiming to sharpen our brainsas we get older, but psychiatrist Ian Hickie, ExecutiveDirector of the University of Sydney’s Brain and MindResearch Institute, has a better idea – keep working.“Work is your own personal cognitive training pro-gram because it keeps you challenged and engaged,”he says. “Through the whole of the lifespan if youcompare people who are employed with those whoare unemployed, their mental and physical health isbetter. Although problems with physical health canbe the reason that health takes you out of the work-place – it’s also true that those who get back to workafter an illness improve their health.”Hickie believes there’s something health preservingabout work - probably a mix of factors, including newexperiences that help drive the growth of brain cells,as well as interaction with other people.“But it could also be that the routine that keeps yougoing to bed and getting up at the same time eachday helps regulate our sleep wake cycles, and this isimportant for our physical and mental health,” hepoints out. “On the other hand, when people are notworking they often tend to sleep more – and eat more.”The really good news for anyone nudging retirementage is that, despite all the gloom about dementia, thebrains of many modern 65 to 70 year olds are in prettygood shape compared to those of previous genera-tions – and, says Hickie, often too young to be re-tired.“Today’s physically active 70-year-olds who don’t

Is retirement bad for our brain?smoke have scans showing brains that look 10 to 15years younger than those of their parents’ genera-tion at the same age – more of whom were smokers. We should never retire simply because of age – thebest professors at this university are over 70 years ofage,” he says, adding that the retirement age of 65 isout of date, an anachronism from the 19th centurywhen life expectancy was shorter and people wereoften worn out by tougher working conditions.“You find that around the world the age of retirementis going up,” says Hickie who, at the 2008 NationalPublic Health Reform Summit, was quoted as sayingthat raising the retirement age from 65 to 72 wouldhelp reduce mental illness.Still that doesn’t mean you have to keep doing thesame job until you drop – most of us will have tochange our job in some way – but just don’t quitaltogether is his advice. It’s a similar message from another brain expert, DrMichael Valenzuela, Senior Research Fellow at theSchool of Psychiatry at the University of NSW. We’retrained to plan our retirement from a financial per-spective, but we should also be paying just as muchattention to planning our retirement from a healthybrain perspective, he writes in his latest book, Main-tain your brain. (ABC Books).“We need to replace the social, physical and cogni-tive activity that was an inherent part of our jobs –and which normally fills up 50 per cent of our wakinglives – with new activities that also have a social, physical and cognitive component,” he says.

A brick balances evenly on scales when weighed against ¾ of a kilogram and¾ of a brick. What does a full brick weigh?

Answer: ¼ of a brick must weigh ¾ of a kilogram so 1 brick weighs 3 kgs.

Continuing to work, evenif only part time, can beone option, although hislist of other activities thattick all three boxes in-cludes getting involvedin a community garden (asopposed to solitary gar-dening), dancing (it’smentally demanding) andorienteering.“I think many people willeither decide to keep onworking or to keep onlearning,” saysValenzuela, pointing tothe Tasmanian HealthyBrain Project, a world firststudy at the University ofTasmania to find out iftaking up further educa-tion at an older age canbuffer our brains againstdementia. Research al-ready suggests that a ter-tiary education early in lifeseems to help protectagainst cognitive decline– could picking up text-books in our 50s, 60s and70s do the same?

Birthdayluncheonfor ValJames, centre, joined byher friendsBeryl andGai Bornat theSouthportYachtClub.

AFTER six months in thejob, I’m pleased by theresponse from the com-munity to the new focuson age discrimination.To-date, I have addresseda number of communityand industry events toexplain my role, the pro-tections provided topeople of all ages by theAge Discrimination Actand the work of the Aus-tralian Human Rights

Report from our new Age Discrimination CommissionerCommission, particularlythe complaints process. And I continue to hearfrom members of the pub-lic about their own expe-riences in battling to findemployment as a matureage jobseeker. In fact, one of my top pri-orities is to address thediscriminatory attitudeswhich restrict the hiringand retention of olderworkers. I am currently

involved in this issue ona number of fronts:I am having ongoing con-structive meetings withindustry bodies, compa-nies and recruiters to dis-cuss how businesses doand could take construc-tive, supportive ap-proaches to hiring andkeeping older workers. These positive strategieswill be showcased in aconference I have planned

for later in the year thatwill also highlight theeconomic costs of dis-crimination against olderworkers.I am taking part in thegovernment’s Consulta-tive Forum on Mature AgeParticipation and encour-aging the implementationof recommendations fromthe Advisory Panel on theEconomic Potential of Se-niors Australians.

In addition to my role asAge Discrimination Com-missioner, I am commenc-ing an appointment aspart time Commissioner tothe Australian Law Re-form Commission, under-taking an audit of Com-monwealth laws and poli-cies which contain agebars that prevent olderAustralians from continu-ing in work.Additionally, I will also bemeeting with governmentand business representa-tives to discuss reformsto the age caps on work-ers compensation pay-ments, income insuranceand travel insurance. The internet is anotherpriority area for me. In oursubmission to theParliament’s Joint SelectCommittee on Cyber-safety inquiry into cybersafety for older Austra-lians, I have recommendthat better targeted infor-mation and accessibletraining be made availableto all older people can sothey can participate withthe rest of Australia inconfidently accessing thebenefits of the Internet.Over this first six monthsas Age DiscriminationCommissioner, I have alsofound that financial secu-rity in another major areaof concern for older Aus-tralians. Therefore, finan-

cial security has formedanother one of my prior-ity areas while I am Com-missioner. To this end, the develop-ment of information toassist older people toavoid financial abuse andapproach the manage-ment of finances withconfidence is anotherproject I have in prepara-tion.Finally, one of the over-riding observations Ihave made as Commis-sioner, and before I tookup the role, concerns theimage of older people inour community and popu-lar culture. There is a dis-turbing tendency forolder people to be pigeon-holed as slow learners, rigid in their ways and asgenerally inactive in re-tirement. These destruc-tive ageist images andstereotypes directly sup-port age discrimination inour community. I believewe need to push backagainst them.As you will be aware, early in my term I put outa call for contributions toour ‘Age Positive’ initia-tive, a sub site to the Aus-tralian Human RightsCommission websitewhich showcases the var-ied and important waysolder people contribute toAustralian society. You

can access Age Positiveonline athumanrights.gov.au/age-positive/stories.html I am very pleased to re-port that ‘Age Positive’has been very successful. We continue to receivemany inspiring contribu-tions, and are very inter-ested in receiving manymore. Finally, my task as AgeDiscrimination Commis-sioner is to serve theAustralian community inpromoting awareness ofageism and unlawful agediscrimination and inworking to eradicate it. Therefore, I am very in-terested in hearing from allof you who have sugges-tions about ways this canbe done so that, together,we will ensure all Austra-lians can live with dignityand security, regardlessof age. You can contact me/sendyour suggestions to: AgeDiscrimination Commis-sioner, GPO Box 5218,Sydney NSW 2001 ora g e d i s c r i m i n a t i o [email protected].

2012 is a leap year, with366 days instead of theusual 365 days. It was theancient Egyptians whofirst worked out that thesolar year and the man-made calendar year didn’talways match up.That’s because it actuallytakes the Earth a littlelonger than a year totravel around the Sun —365 days, 5 hours, 48 min-utes, and 46 seconds, tobe exact. Therefore, as the hoursaccumulated over thecenturies, an extra daywas occasionally addedto the calendar, and overtime the practice becamemore or less official. TheRomans first designatedFebruary 29 as leap day,but a more precise formula(still in use today) wasadopted in the 16th cen-tury when the Gregoriancalendar fine-tuned thecalculations to include aleap day in years only di-visible by four - 2012,2016, 2020, 2024, etc.Another stipulation ruledthat no year divisible by100 would have a leapyear, except if it was di-visible by 400. As thestory goes, the traditionof women romanticallypursuing men in leapyears began in 5th cen-tury Ireland, when St.Bridget complained toSt.Patrick about the fairsex having to wait for mento propose. Patrick finallyrelented and set February29 aside as the day set

who refused were facedwith a fine in the form of akiss, a silk dress, or a pairof gloves given to the re-jected lady fair.

LADIES can take offwith like-minded femalefriends on new groupjourneys that have beendesigned by women forwomen. The new tailor-madewomen only tours, which were launched byAustralian travel agencygroup Escape Travel inOctober last year, arepart of an innovativeconcept called FlyingSolo Together.Travel Consultant KateCroukamp, from EscapeTravel Runaway Bay, isthe entrepreneur behindthe concept.Kate said the idea camein to fruition after manyof her own female clientsexpressed interest in

Fantastic new group tours . . . just for women!travelling solo, butdidn’t know how to goabout it.“I regularly receivedenquiry from ladieswishing to travel safelyand confidently with likeminded companions, with the opportunity toalso save on paying thesingle supplement,”Kate said.“After researchingwomen’s travel over thepast 2 years, it becameapparent that tours forwomen were not readilyavailable to the generalpublic through reputablecompanies. I thereforedecided to start my owntours just for women”.Once the word spreadthat these tours were

available they quicklybecame popular andEscape Travel havelaunched these Australiawide in their 130 stores.“This is an exciting timefor us.I am very proud to beable to offer thesefantastic travel opportu-nities to ladies whommay have once thoughtthat group travel onlycatered to the young orto couples,” Kate said.“Since Flying SoloTogethers launch lastyear we have noticed ahigh response especiallyfrom ladies aged 50 plus.Flying Solo Togethertours are exclusive towomen and are tailormade for women’s

unique and variedinterests.”Escape Travel RunawayBay are also offeringladies who hold aseniors card an exclu-sive $100 discount ofany Flying Solo To-gether tour departing in2012.For more informationabout these uniquetours please call ourRunaway Bay office on1300 841 072. or [email protected] visit ourstore at Runaway Bay oryour nearest EscapeTravel store. The Escape Travel team, look forward to seeingyou soon!

early European settle-ment. Much of it gives usa glimpse into the fasci-nating world of our pastand some of it reminds usof the gruesome and hard

life experienced by ourconvict ancestors. When you next visitBrisbane, take a stroll inthe city and you can visitsome of its living history.Built by convicts in 1829,the splendid Commis-sariat Store is the oldestbuilding in Brisbane. Lo-cated at 115 WilliamStreet, the building facesthe Brisbane River. Todaythe Commissariat Store isthe headquarters of theRoyal Historical Societyof Queensland andhouses a museum whereyou can explore many in-teresting artefacts andBrisbane memorabilia ondisplay. This old building is a re-minder of Queensland’sdays as a convict settle-ment. The two originalstoreys of the Commis-sariat Stores were con-structed by convictlabour under the directionof the Moreton Bay Pe-nal Colony’s harsh Com-mandant, Captain Logan.Logan was hated by the

convicts due to his strictdiscipline and program ofpunishments. As Brisbane grew, so didthe building, and morewas added. The Commis-sariat Store is one ofBrisbane’s most signifi-cant buildings and muchof the history of earlyBrisbane can be traced in

the building itself. Tourguides interpret the build-ing and the displays itcontains, to give visitorsa vivid insight into thelives of the many differ-ent people of the past whocreated our present. The Commissariat Storeis open for visitors dailybetween 10am - 4pm Tues-

NO-ONE knows the true origin of April Fools Day(sometimes referred to as ‘All Fools Day’), but therehave been some famous hoaxes over the years. In 1957 the respected BBC TV show Panorama an-nounced that thanks to a very mild winter and thevirtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil,Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop.It accompanied this announcement with footage ofSwiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti downfrom trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in.Many called the BBC wanting to know how they couldgrow their own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC diplo-matically replied, “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin oftomato sauce and hope for the best!”In 1977, another respected news source, the Britishnewspaper The Guardian published a special seven-page supplement devoted to San Serriffe, a small re-public said to consist of several semi-colon-shapedislands located in the Indian Ocean. A series of ar-ticles affectionately described the geography andculture of this obscure nation. Its two main islands

The best April Fools Day hoaxes of our timewere named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Its capi-tal was Bodoni, and its leader was General Pica. TheGuardian’s phones rang all day as readers soughtmore information about the idyllic holiday spot. Onlya few noticed that everything about the island wasnamed after printer’s terminology. In 1998 Burger King published a full page advertise-ment in USA Today announcing the introduction of anew item to their menu: a “Left-Handed Whopper”specially designed for the 32 million left-handedAmericans. According to the advertisement, the newwhopper included the same ingredients as the origi-nal Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.),but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees forthe benefit of their left-handed customers. The fol-lowing day Burger King issued a follow-up releaserevealing that although the Left-Handed Whopperwas a hoax, thousands of customers had gone intorestaurants to request the new sandwich. Simulta-neously, according to the press release, “many oth-ers requested their own ‘right handed’ version.”
