CLIENT TESTIMONIALHEARD THE GOOD NEWS?“I am so overjoyed with the improvement in my life. I first noticed I was having difficulty hearing when there was more than one person talking. It wasn’t always clear and I kept asking them to repeat themselves.

Life is a lot easier now that I have my new digital hearing aids. The TV does not have to be so loud and I can hear everybody clearly even when they speak softly. I’m so much more confident socialising with friends.

The best part is my hearing aids are so small most people don’t know I’m wearing them.”

Frances – Carrara, QLD

The recent rapid advancement in hearing aid technology has resulted in hundreds of Gold Coast residents being fitted every week with state of the art digital hearing aids. The development of fully automatic settings now means that users can insert the device and forget about it. Optimum comfort is ensured as each aid is uniquely manufactured to match an impression taken of your ear.

A1 Discreet Hearing Aids specialise in the latest technology and provide a full range of in-the-ear and behind-the-ear hearing instruments, catering to all needs.

JUDGING by the great variety of puzzle books on themarket, it’s clear many people are hooked on puzzlesof one sort or other and Patricia Devine is no excep-tion.The only difference is, she also designs them andhas been doing so for many years, selling themthrough an agent to various newspapers.Recently she branched out and published TheQuozzle Book, named after her favourite puzzle. When we asked her how this passion for words andlanguage came out she said her school teachers hadinstilled the interest, and working for the ABC in Dar-win, Port Moresby and Brisbane enabled her to fos-ter that interest. That made sense but we were still puzzled (sorry) asto why she began designing them. She explained that years ago she came across an un-usual puzzle which was built around a passage from a

Are you hooked on puzzles?book. She decided to try designing one using a fa-mous quote instead of a passage. That worked butwhen she had compiled a few, along with several otherpuzzles, she wondered what to do next. Family andfriends stepped in and began encouraging her to finda publisher, but it was only when that encourage-ment turned into nagging that she finally got ‘herbrain out of neutral’ as she says, and finally pub-lished her book.Since Patricia admits to being a bit of a Luddite herson helped arrange for a website to be set up –www.devinewordpuzzles.com.au where you can seethe Quozzle and the other puzzles included in thebook. If you do not have access to the Internet, send astamped, addressed envelope to her at PO Box 3220,Burleigh Town, Qld 4220 and she will send you asample of the puzzles – try before you buy!

TWO psychologyprofessors from FloridaState University in theUSA have found that boththe attitudes and abilitiesof older adults posebarriers to adopting newforms of technology andhave urged designers toconsider those barrierswhen developing newproducts.“The technology gap is aproblem becausetechnology, particularlycomputer and Internettechnology, is becomingubiquitous, and fullparticipation in societybecomes more difficult forthose without suchaccess,” said ProfessorNeil Charness. From booking airlinetickets to seeking healthcare information, almosteverything is easier,

Do you feel lost with modern technology?cheaper or faster online.Older adults who may beless mobile in particularstand to benefit from in-novations such as onlinebanking. But there is asharp decline in internetuse after age 65.Declining cognitiveprocesses, decreasedmemory capacity and dif-ficulty maintainingattention - all part of thenormal aging process - canmake it difficult for seniorsto learn new skills. In fact,Charness said, it takesolder adults roughly twiceas long as younger peopleto learn a new wordprocessor under self-paced learning conditions. That’s true even for olderadults who have priorexperience with anotherword processor. The extra time and effort

required to learn a new skillare among the reasonswhy older adults aregenerally less motivatedthan younger people tolearn new skills —particularly if they decidethat the potential benefitsof the new technology arenot worth it. In addition, seniors may make agreater number of errors asthey interact with technol-ogy that was notdesigned with theircapabilities in mind.Seniors quite literallyperceive new technologydifferently than youngeradults do. Changes inacuity, color perceptionand susceptibility to glareaffect the way they see acomputer screen. They

also have greater difficultywith fine motor controland co-ordination.However, knowing theseconstraints, designers cancreate better products forolder adults, the research-ers said. Among their sug-gestions are mobilephones with simplifiedmenus, large fonts andbuttons and external noisereduction, websites withhigh contrastbackgrounds and text, larger fonts and minimalscrolling. The sites shouldprovide navigation aidsand instructional support.Computer games - such asNintendo’s Brain Age -and software packagesthat have been developedfor and marketed to older

adults may also helpreverse age-relateddeclines in perceptual andcognitive abilities, theresearchers said.Although the technologygap between younger andolder adults is expected tolessen over time as moreadults “grow up” withcomputers, the problemwill not disappear infuture generations, theresearchers said. That’s because technol-ogy will undoubtedlycontinue to advancerapidly, and age-relateddeclines in cognitive, perceptual andpsychomotor skills willmake it more difficult forseniors to keep up withthe changes.

IN 2011 Chinese New Year falls on Thursday 3 Febru-ary. It’s time to welcome the Year of the Rabbit. The Chinese phrase for celebrating Chinese New Year,“Guo Nian”, means “the passing of the beast”. InChinese mythology, a Nian is a beast that lives underthe sea or in the mountains. Once each spring, oraround Chinese New Year, it comes out of hiding toattack people, especially children.Fortunately, the Nian is sensitive to loud noises andafraid of the colour red, so, to drive it away, theChinese have traditions of decorating things in red, exploding firecrackers and performing a lion dance.A Rabbit year should be a placid year, very muchwelcomed and needed after the ferocious year of theTiger. We should go off to some quiet spot to lick ourwounds and get some rest after all the battles of theprevious year.Good taste and refinement will shine on everythingand people will acknowledge that persuasion is betterthan force. A congenial time in which diplomacy, international relations and politics will be given a front

Theinfluence of the Rabbittends to spoil thosewho like too muchcomfort and thus impair their effectiveness and senseof duty. The scene is quiet and calm, even deteriorating to thepoint of somnolence. We will all have a tendency toput off disagreeable tasks as long as possibleMoney can be made without too much labour. Ourlife style will be languid and leisurely as we allowourselves the luxuries we have always craved for.A temperate year with unhurried pace. For once, itmay seem possible for us to be carefree and happywithout too many annoyances.

2011 promises to be a year of theunknown for both politicians and theover-50s when, for the first time in threedecades, National Seniors gets a newchairman.Melbourne economist, former ABCdeputy chairman, and a director on twoFrank Lowy boards, Judith Sloan hastaken over from National Seniors chair-man Everald Compton.Professor Sloan who at 56 represents anew guard of seniors, the babyboomers, is relishing her new role.“I look forward to carrying the mantlefor older Australians and ensuring theirvoice is central to the national debate,”she said. “The big issues for 2011 willbe cost of living, aged care, health, andretirement income.“Unforeseen costs associated withcarbon taxes and super fast broadband

Judith Sloan to head up seniors lobbynetworks have greater impact onretirees with fixed incomes,” she said.Everald Compton’s unfinished businessis an all-of-government approach topopulation ageing.“The greatest economic and socialchallenge facing Australia in thiscentury is the rapid ageing of thepopulation. The nation will reach apoint where, as health costs steadilyclimb, there will be more people out ofthe workforce than in it.”“All Australians need to rethink thecapacity seniors have to continuebuilding this nation and remove thebarriers, both discriminatory andlegislative, to their doing so”.“I believe Australia can lead the worldin making an ageing society aprosperous one. Aged Care - new reportrecommends changes

THE Productivity Commission has rec-ommended a complete re-working ofthe nation’s aged care system. In amuch anticipated draft report, the Com-mission has recommended an openingup of the system, including an end toa cap on residential bed numbers. It also wants more of a ‘user pays’ ap-proach, with Australians paying fortheir care according to their individualwealth. Groups representing patients, nursing homes and workers who willbe affected most by the aged care re-forms have welcomed theCommission’s draft report, warning

that the aged care system is in troubleand reform is needed. The commission has recommendedsetting up an agency to maintain a na-tional aged-care database and tostandardise care arrangements.Acting federal health minister MarkButler said the government would waituntil the final version of the report be-fore responding to the suggestions.Every older Australian had the rightto access quality care, Mr Butleradded, and deserved greater choiceand control over their carearrangements.

GOLD Coast CityCouncil’s Active &Healthy Citywide Pro-gram booklet, filled witha variety of activity ideas

SOME emails making the rounds are annoying, whileothers give you something to think about, such asthe following: Imagine that you had won the follow-ing prize in a contest: Each morning your bank is todeposit $86,400.00 into your private account for youruse; however, this prize has rules, just as any gamehas rules. The first set of rules: Everything that youdon’t spend during each day will be taken away fromyou. You cannot simply transfer money into anotheraccount. You have to spend it. Each morning uponwaking, the bank opens your account with another$86,400.00 for that day. The second set of rules: Thebank can end the game without warning; at any timeit can say, ‘The game is over.’ It can close the accountand you will not receive a new one. What would you personally do? Would you try tospend every cent, and use it all? Would you buyanything and everything you wanted, not only for

Something to think aboutyourself, but for all people you love; even for peopleyou don’t know because you couldn’t possibly spendit all on yourself? Actually, this game is reality. Eachof us is in possession of such a magical bank. Wejust can’t seem to see it. The magical bank is time. Each morning we wake to receive 86,400 seconds as agift of life, and when we go to sleep at night, anyremaining time is NOT credited to us. What we haven’t‘lived’ that day is forever lost. Yesterday is forevergone. Each morning the account is refilled, but thebank can dissolve your account at any time, withoutwarning. So, what will you do with your 86,400 sec-onds? Aren’t they worth so much more than the sameamount in dollars? Think about it, and always thinkthus: enjoy every second of your life because timeraces by so much more quickly than you think. Takecare of yourself. Be happy; love deeply. Here’s wish-ing you a worthwhile day.

OLDER Australians have welcomed the Federalgovernment’s commitment to cheaper, simpler andmore transparent superannuation in its response tothe Cooper Review.Of the 117 Super System Review recommendationsput to the Government in June, the most critical toconsumers, said National Seniors chief executive,Michael O’Neill, was the introduction of the default,no-frills MySuper option“For too long, the retirement savings of ordinary, hardworking Australians have been unknowinglymilked by industry through fees and trailing commis-sions,” said O’Neill.

Seniors welcome no-frills super“It’s not illegal, but the super system is so murky, socomplex that very few consumers would know they’vebeen paying $85 a month or over $1000 a year in feesalone. This green light for a simple default fund withlower fees means that when consumers hit retirementthey’ll have an extra $40,000 in retirement savings,”he said. “Australia Institute research suggests thosesavings could be as high as $100,000”.“On both choice and default products, we are keen tosee the development of an independent consumer-friendly website that would allow Australians to eas-ily compare super funds, performance and fees,” hesaid.Courtesy: National Seniors ‘Connect’

When successful Brisbane businessman Phil Tornabene approached what he thought would be his golden years…. Parkinson’s disease grabbed all that by the scruff of the neck and shook its way into his life.

A lifetime of hard work to set up he and wife Noeline fi nancially was cruelled by the advancing ravages of Parkinson’s. Shaking and falling regularly were the bi-products of this insidious degenerative disease. A broken wrist and cracked ribs were amongst the list of injuries. Perhaps the worst part for Phil to cope with was his speech.

“It made normal conversation almost impossible,” Phil said. “Also the fact I would often ‘freeze’ and could not move momentarily…made everyday tasks like answering the phone so diffi cult. It all added to the feeling of being ‘trapped’ in a Parkinson’s nightmare.”

This dynamic pair, who simply refused to give up on fi nding a way to get their lifestyle back.

Now, thanks to a range of treatments including all natural stem cell enhancers from New Zealand, Phil is “back”. Back walking steadily, speaking steadily (this is getting better all the time). The fact is there is not even a trace of any drug in these all natural products.

“Getting my health back has been the greatest gift of life…now I just want to share the good news with everyone who has serious health challenges.”

Life has begun again at 70…wow!

SAILOR Sam and puppeteer Luisa Liussi have be-come great mates since working on the school holi-days show Pirates’ Secret Treasure (the ‘treasure’being a chest of jellybeans!), written and directed byyoung-at-heart senior Phil Bell.Luisa has been a volunteer puppeteer with QTOP,the Queensland Theatre of Puppetry (celebrating its40th anniversary in 2011), for just over a year. In ‘herother life’ Luisa is mother to three sons and grand-mother to ‘two beautiful girls, Allegra and Olympia’,her motivation behind being a puppeteer. Originallyfrom Italy, Luisa was the first Italian teacher on theGold Coast, and now has taught this melodic lan-guage for 28 years to both children and adults. The next QTOP puppet show will be held during theEaster school holidays at the Gerda Pinter Pavilion,Macintosh Island, Surfers Paradise. Anyone want-ing to volunteer in any capacity with the non-profitQTOP should either write to PO Box 437, Southport4215; email: [email protected], or seewww.qtop.org.au.

THE intricacies, anomalies, absurdities, as well as theflexibility and inflexibility of English must surely testthe patience of anyone trying to learn it as a secondlanguage. Why do we delight in finding differentuses for plain, ordinary words? Consider the use ofbody parts:Try telling someone that the only way to progress inthis world is to not have their HEAD in the clouds, ortheir BACK to the wall, but to stick their NECK out, keep their FEET on the ground, their SHOULDER tothe wheel and their NOSE to the grindstone. In thatposition, how far would they get! What about the animal world! We can describe some-one as a silly GOOSE, an eager BEAVER or an uglyDUCKLING. We can FROG march people, talk TUR-KEY, have a WHALE of a time or a DOG in the mangerattitude. We can go to a white ELEPHANT sale, usea ZEBRA crossing and live for DONKEY’s years. And clothing? Who is more irritating – the stuffed

All together, we have had greatfun over the years.‘We are proud to present four productions a year:comedy, mystery, murder, plus other styles of plays. Our history covers many events in which our mem-bers have been involved but some that stand outinclude helping Coolangatta (now Gold Coast) Air-port management by playing crash victims for mockdisasters to test local emergency groups. Sara Storer Live at RSL SouthportNorthern Territory. But authenticity alonedoesn’t make a great art-ist. Sara has a hungrywriter’s eye, her songs fullof vivid, telling momentsand narratives that seemto drop the listener into afreshly minted world. Thevoice that tells these talesis open and unguarded;the music seductive yetenergised. Her songs speak withgreat directness and im-

mediacy, as if we hadfound ourselves on theroad, or round the camp-fire, with the characters ofthe song. Some songwriters taketheir inspirations fromother songs; with Sara, the starting point is moreoften a scene torn directlyfrom life. Her first song,‘Buffallo Bill’, is typical:the story drawn from aretired buffalo shootershe met when working in

a truck stop in the smallQueensland town ofCamooweal. She gave him the song asyou would a gift, saw thetears it brought forth fromthe old man, and startedto understand the powerof song.Soon she moved to theTerritory, teaching inKalkaringi, an Aboriginalsettlement 500km southwest of Katherine. Thereshe developed hersongwriting and began toplay for friends – at par-ties and around campfires.A friend encouraged herto enter a talent quest atthe town of AdelaideRiver, a dot in the red dirtof the far north. The ‘en-couragement prize’ was aworkshop at the Austra-lian College of CountryMusic, held in the weeksleading up to theTamworth Country MusicFestival.Sara took the two-weekcourse in January 2000.Just four years later, shewas back at the same fes-tival – and won moreawards in a single festi-val than anyone before orsince: seven Golden Gui-tars.She’d been busy, ofcourse, during those in-tervening four years.

When she first went toTamworth, with her ticketfrom Adelaide River, shemet the record producerGarth Porter. Garth re-corded six of her songsand introduced her toABC Music, who quicklysigned the young artist. Her first album, ChasingBuffalo, came out laterthat year, producing threenumber one singles on thecountry charts – startingwith ‘Buffalo Bill’.Sara won the Best NewTalent award at the 2001Country Music Awards, and then – in 2002 – re-leased her second albumBeautiful Circle, this timewith the stand-out song‘Raining on the Plain’, aduet with JohnWilliamson. By 2004, withthat record haul of GoldenGuitars, there was nostopping her. Two moreacclaimed albums fol-lowed – Firefly (2005) andSilver Skies (2007) – andnow the one you hold inyour hands.Sara Storer is performingat RSL Southport on Sat-urday 19th February at8pm. Tickets are $28 foradults and $15 for Chil-dren.For further informationvisit www.southportrsl.com.au
