Gold Coast / Tweed Newspaper Vol 12. - Issue No. 11 DECEMBER 2012 1300 880 265 FREE Your Award Winning Seniors’ Newspaper - Written for Seniors by Seniors READERS may remember sisters Mai Belogamba and Jose Garnett from a story run earlier this year in the Gold Coast/Tweed Seniors newspaper. Mai and Jose, together with other enthusiasts who meet each Friday at Mai’s Tweed Heads home, are keen knitters who enjoy nothing more than knit knit knitting, and all in the name of charity. Although the group is now smaller (with new members always welcome) Mai and Jose and their fellow knitters remain true to their cause: throughout the year donating a range of hand-knitted items to hospitals, nursing homes, ambulance centres, women’s refuges, pathology and oncology units, doctors surgeries and a local police station— wherever they feel there is a need. The donations assist the ill, lonely, sad and needy; the traumatised; the frightened of all ages, from babies upwards. The knitters gratefully welcome donations of wool but, to ensure a steady supply, group members each contribute $2 weekly towards wool purchases. In addition they assist in knitting Christmas Nativity Scenes that are hopefully then sold to the public, with proceeds going towards more wool. It’s worth noting that Mai and Jose use the funds carefully on economical bulk buys of wool they not only organise themselves but then store at Mai’s. Tweed Heads and the wider community are lucky to have these two non-stop, spring-in-their-step, caring Seniors as residents. Mai turned an energetic 92 this month and Jose is a positive and smiling 87. Neither can speak highly enough of their 89-year old brother Vincent who is in a home nearby. Mai (on left) and Jose are pictured with a tableful of knitted Nativity Scene figures ready for assembly into groups as shown at the front and including the infant Jesus in a cradle, Mary, Joseph, two shepherds, three sheep and three Wisemen. NATIONAL Seniors has welcomed a new govern-ment website to support older Australians alreadyonline but says more needs to be done to help se-niors actually get there in the first place.Launched in Sydney recently, the new Broadbandfor Seniors website contains links to kiosk hosts andvolunteer tutors, and “how to” guides covering top-ics such as internet content filtering, emailing videosand pictures, memory card readers, shrinking picturesfor emails, USB memory sticks as well as internet train-ing workbooks covering Skype, online radio,Facebook and YouTube.National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill com-mended the initiative but said more needed to be doneto help older Australians take the very first step intocyber space. “While this website is a useful resource,it is targeted at those already online who probablydon’t need as much help,” he said.“What we need are programs for those older Austra-lians who are either overwhelmed by the technologyor have safety concerns and therefore won’t touch a

Over 60s need help to get onlinecomputer,” O’Neill said.“The fastest rate of internet usage growth is occur-ring among older adults, with 71% of the 55-64 agegroup accessing the internet in 2010-2011. Howeverfor those over 65 years of age, the level of participa-tion or access is only 37%.“This shows many older people are still reluctant togo online,” he said.“Older Australians need to have confidence in thetechnology so they can feel secure about goingonline.”National Seniors research shows the top three barri-ers to older Australians going online are: lack of knowl-edge and skills (76%); confusion around the technol-ogy (74%); concerns about security and viruses(64%).Seniors have also indicated that they are either un-able to afford online training programs; or unawareof publically available computer training programsand resources, such as government-sponsoredkiosks which are free of charge.

HOUSEHOLDS and small businessesconsidering installing solar panels willneed to order their systems very soon. The Federal Government announcedon 16 November that it is totally phas-ing out the Solar Credits multiplier 6months early - meaning the subsidy willbe reduced by 50%.The solar power rebate will be reducedby over $900 on December 31st 2012,six months earlier than planned. In or-der to qualify for the current rebate, which is almost $2000 on a 1.5kW sys-tem, home and business owners willneed to have their system installed bythis date. The rebate was meant to be reduced byover $900 in June 2013 but the govern-ment has moved the deadline forwardby 6 months, claiming they need to savecosts.According to national solar pro-vider Energy Matters, it’s thecompany’s understanding eligiblehouseholds and businesses will still beentitled to the current 2x Solar Creditsmultiplier in the following circum-stances:

Newsflash - Solar Credits Subsidyslashed prematurely

• Where a contract to purchase wasentered into before 16 November, in-stallation must occur before June 30,2013.• Where a contract is entered into after16 November, the system must be in-stalled before 1 January 2013.The very unwelcome news will nodoubt trigger a rush, as has always beenthe case when similar announcementshave been made in the past relating tosolar subsidies. With the end of the year rapidly ap-proaching and many installers taking abreak over the Christmas period, instal-lation appointment slots will becomevery scarce, very quickly. The Australian Solar Council hasslammed the Australian Government’sdecision to bring the date so far for-ward and with so little notice. “This is a knee-jerk reaction to a non-existent problem and a pre-emptivestrike on Australian families who wantto install solar to cut their power bills,”said John Grimes, Chief Executive of theAustralian Solar Council.

Tony, 49, hasbeen a quadriplegic sincea car accident in 1997 yetregularly brings his petShih Tzu, Bruce, to PFTtraining sessions, alsojoining other volunteerson visits to various facili-ties. A NEW incorporated as-sociation has beenformed to service theneeds of residents of resi-dential parks throughoutQueensland after the re-moval of governmentfunding to the Caravanand ManufacturedHomes Residents Asso-ciation (CAMRA) andother like associations. The new association“Associated ResidentialParks Queensland Inc”(ARPQ) was formed bythree members of theformer CAMRA manage-ment committee who seeno reason not to moveforward and offer a sup-port service for residentsof residential parks, andwith the added impetus ofbeing proactive and notreactive. Like all retire-ment venues, the wholeindustry needs a totaloverall which requires acomplete revue of the leg-islation governing thewhole industry. ARPQtakes the view that wasoffered by two MPs at apublic forum on the Sun-shine Coast in 2007, andnow both ministers in thenew LNP government, their advice to the audi-ence of park residents was“if you do nothing, you’llget nothing”, their adviceis our credo. The StateChairperson of the steer-ing committee Mr Glenn

Above: Oma is pictured seated in the middle of just some of the crowd on hand that day, with great-grandbaby number 53,Daniel, born in March, on her lap. Below: A black-and-white photo shows Petronella, ‘Oma’, and Johannes, ‘Pop’, soon afterarriving in Australia from Holland in 1958, with all 11 children posing happily with them. Frank, who is Jacqui’s stepdad, is theoldest child at 13 and, Marianne, at eight months, is in her mother’s arms.

those opening wordsthere was a tale readerswould enjoy; a tale thattoday revolves aroundclan matriarch PetronellaJonker.Petronella, known asNell and affectionately

as Oma, arrived onAustralian shores withhusband Johannes(John) in 1958 after theyleft their homeland ofThe Netherlands byship. Even though manyEuropean immigrantsmade similar trips, theJonkers in particularwould have caught theeye of their fellowtravellers as well asofficials along the ship’sroute. Petronella andJohannes wereaccompanied on this tripof a lifetime-all the wayfrom Holland in thenorthern hemisphere toa distant Australia in thesouthern hemisphere-bytheir children, all 11 ofthem. to mark Oma’s birthdayand enjoy a reunion atthe same time. InNovember, Oma turned93-years young andabout 65 familymembers, includingeight of the childrenwho had travelled fromHolland more than 50years ago, were able tojoin the Jonker matriarchat a celebration alongthe Paradise Pointwaterfront.

PEOPLE with disability in Queensland will seechanges to disability parking permits materials andpresentation. The Queensland Government will stop producingthe high quality and fraud proof polypropylenedisability parking permit for a cheaper permit.Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities andCarers, Senator Jan McLucas said “This decisionby the Newman Government is short sighted andwill have serious effects for disability parkingpermit holders.“One of the reasons we insisted on the polypropy-lene permits was to reduce permit fraud that weknew was rife. And the Queensland Government isreopening the door for fraud and abuse.”In 2010, all state and territory governments agreedto have nationally consistent disability parkingpermits and therefore moved to the AustralianDisability Parking Scheme. The Australian Disability Parking Scheme enablespeople with disability the opportunity to travelaround their community and interstate without theconfusion and stress that varying disability parkingarrangements across the country may cause. As part of the transition to the national scheme, theFederal Government distributed more than 35,000new permits to Queenslanders and provided twospecialist printing machines to the QueenslandGovernment at a total cost of $200,000.The Queensland Government is now intending todispose of the two printers and print disabilityparking permits on cardboard, not the high qualityfraud proof polypropylene - as a so called costsaving measure.“People with disability are some of the mostmarginalised in our society. THE high number of Australians approaching retire-ment who have little or no plans for their retirement isa worrying sign, according to a new report. The National Seniors Australia report entitled ‘WhatNext? Workforce Transitions and Retirement Plan-ning Among Australian Pre-Retirees’ investigated theretirement planning strategies of 1,820 pre-retirees fromdifferent population subgroups with respect to finan-cial, lifestyle, and health planning.Overall, 60% of respondents have made only one orno plans across the domains (that is, across finan-cial, health and lifestyle priorities), while only 14%have made four or five plans.Around 62% of pre-retirees report having plans inplace for their finances, which is far more common-place than planning for health (24% - 27%) or lifestylepriorities (17% - 26%) in retirement.“This suggests that when it comes to retirement plan-ning, outside of the financial domain, not many peopleare making plans for their lifestyle priorities andhealth,’’ National Seniors chief executive Michael

RESEARCH into how the modern-day family supporteach other has found older Australians are spendingmuch of their time babysitting grandchildren as wellas financially supporting younger family members. The National Seniors Productive Ageing researchreport entitled It’s Not Just About Money:Intergenerational Transfers of Time and Money Toand From Mature Age Australians, prepared by theUniversity of Adelaide, studied the extents to whichfamilies from different generations support each other, for example through financial assistance (such asgifts or loans) or practical support (such asbabysitting, transport, or home maintenance) and inparticular the nature of interfamilial transfers providedto and by older people. The study found the younger generation were themost likely group to receive practical help (76%) com-pared to those in the older generation (34%).Those from the ‘Sandwich’ generation (people aged50 plus with at least one aged parent and one adultchild) provided practical help to younger family mem-bers (71%) compared to older family members (55%),with 29 percent giving help to both the younger andolder generation.Childcare and babysitting grandchildren were themost common type of practical help provided to chil-dren (33% of all practical help provided), followed byhome maintenance/gardening (20%) and transport(14%).The research also found that financial transfers withinfamilies predominantly occur from older to youngergenerations, while much less so in the other direc-tion. Practical assistance, on the other hand, was ex-changed between both the younger and older gen-erations.National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill saidolder people’s contributions to helping out their fami-lies was substantial.“Whether it be financial support or helping their adultchildren with babysitting the grandkids, older Aus-tralians are generous when it comes to donating theirtime and money to their families,” O’Neill said. The research also found a total of 36 per cent of house-holds aged 50+ gave money compared to only eightper cent which received money, markedly higher than10 European countries (21% and 3%). 90% of finan-cial transfer went to children; 65% were gifts and 35%loans. NATIONAL Seniors hopes draft legislative changesannounced today will strengthen Australia’s weakage discrimination laws, making it easier for older Aus-tralians to prove discriminatory treatment in thecourts. The federal government’s proposed changeswill effectively simplify the system by streamliningfive anti-discrimination Acts into one.Under the changes, age discrimination laws will beheld to the higher standards currently covering dis-ability, sex and race discrimination.National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill cau-tiously welcomed the proposed changes but said fur-ther information was needed.“Recent National Seniors research reveals that work-place age discrimination amongst the over 50s is aliveand well but notoriously difficult to prove,” O’Neillsaid. “Many employers associate older age with dis-ability, illness or limited capacity, and youth withhealth, energy and vitality,’’ he said.“Stronger anti-discrimination laws will allow olderAustralians who have been unfairly treated in jobsearch or the workplace, some recourse.”Under changes to the complaints system once thecomplainant has established a prima facie case, theonus will be on the respondent to justify unfavourabletreatment.“At this stage we have some questions around theparameters within which a complainant must initiallyestablish a prima facie case.“National Seniors is looking forward to contributingto the Senate Inquiry.”The changes also propose that aged care providerswill no longer be permitted to discriminate on thegrounds of sexual orientation and gender identitywhen delivering care for same-sex couples.National Seniors research shows a person in their50s who becomes unemployed will remain unem-ployed three times longer than someone of a youngerage. Christmas healthy diet tipsmany of us? A combina-tion of reasons; financialpressures, a busy socialcalendar and end-of-year burnout all contrib-ute to feelings of stressand anxiety. Organiza-tion and planning canhelp keep you calm andtake some of thepressure off. So make alist (and check it twice!)for things like presentsand food shopping,Christmas cards andother to-do items.Decide what is reallyimportant and what iscontributing unneces-sarily to your stress.

Delegate whereverpossible – you don’thave to do it all on yourown. What to drinkIf you choose to drinkalcohol, try to be awareof how much you areconsuming. A standarddrink is 10g of alcohol, which equates to 100mlwine (much less than weusually pour ourselves),30ml spirits, 60mlfortified wine eg: port, sherry, 425ml light beeror 285ml full strengthbeer. Be wary ofcocktails or punches atparties as the alcoholiccontent may be muchhigher than you realize(not to mention theadded kilojoules fromfruit juices and otheringredients). When to eatHam, turkey, mince pies, gingerbread, fruit cake, pudding, shortbread –are your memories ofChristmas centeredaround food? It can bedifficult to resist thetemptations of Christ-mas goodies, especiallywhen they evoke such astrong emotionalresponse. Try to enjoythe festive fare inmoderation and onlyindulge in the goodsyou really enjoy, not theones that you eat ‘justbecause they are there’.Simple tricks like waitinguntil Christmas Eve toeat a mince pie, orhaving a small piece ofshortbread with yourcup of tea but passingon the chocolates(which we eat all yearround) mean you won’tfeel like you are missingout.Financial strainBlowing your budgetduring the festiveseason is unfortunatelycommon and can lead toa painful credit cardhangover in the NewYear. The best way to

avoid financial stress isto budget throughoutthe year and not spendmore than you canafford. If you have alarge group of familyand friends to buypresents for, consideragreeing on a price limitper person, or arrange aKris Kringle where eachmember of the groupbuys a present for oneother member only.BereavementIf you have lost a lovedone, your feelings ofgrief and loss may beworse at Christmas time.Remember that everyonegrieves differently andfamily members maywant to acknowledgethe loss in differentways. Some find stickingto traditions comforting, while others find achange in the routinehelps them cope. Somefamily members maywant to reminisce, whileothers prefer to remem-ber the lost family

member privately in theirown way.It is important to respectthese differences andaccommodate eachother’s reactions asmuch as possible.LonelinessFor some people,Christmas can be a verylonely and depressingtime of year. For thosewho are separated bydistance or estrangedfrom their families, feelings of isolation maybe exacerbated. To helpcope with feelings ofdepression and loneli-ness, find out if anyoneelse in your social circleis spending Christmasalone and organize tospend the day togetheror consider volunteeringat a charity, homelessshelter or nursing homeon Christmas Day.Participating in localcommunity events likeCarols by Candlelightcan also offer a sense ofbelonging.

IN hot and humid weather our pets need a little cool-ing off and somewhere where they can escape thesun. Dogs are most at risk from overheating, espe-cially puppies, older dogs and overweight dogs.Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat as a means of keep-ing cool, except minimally on their paws, and theirthick coat acts as an insulator, which only adds to theproblem. To lose heat dogs pant, pushing air acrossthe moist heated surfaces of the tongue, throat andwindpipe, losing heat by evaporation. If your dog’sbody temperature becomes too high, these mecha-nisms of heat loss can be overwhelmed, and yourdog is at risk of heat exhaustion. The normal bodytemperature of a dog is 38.5 degrees Celsius. If thebody temperatures reaches and exceeds 41 degreesCelsius, the dog is at risk of brain damage, vital organdamage and subsequently death. A dog’s tempera-ture can reach these catastrophic heights if they areleft in a locked car or over-exercised on a hot day.Overheated dogs can appear slow, unresponsive, dis-orientated, you will find them panting excessively and

Caring for your dog in hot weatherthey will have very red gums, which can progress tocoma and seizures. So don’t leave dogs in lockedcars even if the windows are open. The temperatureinside a car on a hot day can quickly increase in amatter of minutes. If you need to leave the dogs inthe car for a short period of time, make sure someonestays with the dog, with the engine and air condition-ing turned on. Also, avoid walking your dog duringthe hottest part of the day – take an early morningwalk before the temperature rises or leave it until lateevening when it becomes much cooler. If you knowthat it will be hot on your walk, take some water withyou to prevent your dog from getting dehydrated. When you get home, leave your dog in a shady placeand a gentle hosing down or a cold wet towel canhelp keep them cool. Make sure there is constantaccess to cold water. If you think that your dog issuffering from heat exhaustion, telephone for veteri-nary advice immediately and do your best to bringdown their temperature en route to the vet, usingcold wet towels.

GOLD Coaster George Lewis, a keen amateur bird pho-tographer, took this photo of a Brown Quail.George says “Brown Quails are very commonthroughout parks, gardens and reserves but mostpeople will only catch fleeting glimpses of them asthe quails run (rat or rabbit-like) across walking tracks.Brown Quails avoid flight but love to dash about ingrassy undergrowth. There are as many as eight dif-ferent quails endemic to Gold Coast area but the BrownQuail is the most common.”

CHRISTMAS and decorative lights are an excitingway to add fun to festivities, but used incorrectlythey can cause electric shocks or fires. If you will be using lights indoors only and protectedfrom the weather, then it’s acceptable to buy lightssuitable “for indoor use only”. The marking “for in-door use only” will be on the Christmas light, usuallyon the plastic label tag near the supply plug or on thetransformer rating label if the lights are extra low volt-age. It will also be clearly marked on the box.If the lights are for outdoors or on verandas or wherethey can be affected by the weather, only buy Christ-mas lights marked “suitable for outdoor use”.Christmas lights require an Australian certificate ofapproval before they can be sold in Queensland. IN the midst of a very heavy schedule for the TwinTowns Masters Swimming Club, popular PresidentDavid Misson and wife Sue were hosts for their an-nual Melbourne Cup party where the dress for theday was anything but their usual training swimmingcostumes. Sweeps, games and jokes were a preludeto the great race where the stakes were high. ‘Trust-worthy Dodgy Dave Maynard’ was the shifty bookiefor the day but following a little persuasion by theClerk of the Course all bets were duly honoured. Just days following, ‘Trustworthy Dodgy Dave’swapped hats to be one of the leading lights at theswimming section at the Pan Pacific Masters Gamesbeing held in Southport. Dave was joined by fellowTwin Towns Masters Ken Liddy, Sue Misson andAllaine Stent who were all officials at the event, andTwin Towns competitors Barbara Maynard, RobynHughes, and Michael Lynch all of whom won medalsin their respective age groups. SEAN has added another string to his bow, ‘CrossCountry Running’. Sean entered the Pan-Pacific Mas-ters Games on the Gold Coast and won gold in his agegroup 75-79 years in the Cross Country event. Earlierin the year in July, he completed the ½ Marathon(21.5Ks) for the 5th consecutive time 2008-2012 havinghad his 75th birthday in May. He also competed in theBridges to Brisbane 10k last August for the 6th time.“It’s good to see so many senior citizens out and aboutcompeting in these events. The Pan-Pac Games had12,000 competitors covering 38 different sports, about6000 from Queensland alone.” Sean said.

MORE powerful sunscreens boasting SPF50+ pro-tection could hit Australian shelves from early nextyear. Under revised guidelines adopted by StandardsAustralia, SPF50+ is the new benchmark for sunscreenprotection but labelling a product as sunblock or waterproof is prohibited. The terms have been deemed mis-leading because sunscreens can’t completely preventsunburn as the term sunblock suggests and they alsowash off in water. Labelling a product as sweat proofhas also been banned. Standards Australia chief ex-ecutive Colin Blair said consumers would now de-mand SPF50+ as a result of the new standard, whichwill be reviewed by the Therapeutic Goods Associa-tion before it is adopted into legislation. Craig Sinclairfrom Cancer Council Victoria said SPF 50+ provided agreater level of protection, providing consumers con-tinued to apply the same amount. He said the changewas in line with international standards.“Given the Australian lifestyle, the standard sets veryhigh requirements around water resistance, which aremuch higher than in equivalent standards in theUnited States and Europe,” Mr Sinclair said in a state-ment. However, there is not a lot of difference be-

IF, like me, you’re of a cer-tain age, you’ll no doubtremember Danny Kaye’smovie Hans ChristianAndersen and the themesong “Wonderful Won-derful Copenhagen”.That was nearly 60 yearsago.Today, Denmark’s capitalis just as wonderful asever. For Australians, there’s now an added linkbetween our two coun-tries in the form of CrownPrincess Mary, who re-sides with the royal fam-ily in AmalienborgPalace….which you canvisit and perhaps catchsight of the princess asshe takes the kids toschool. We weren’t solucky, but the palace itselfis just one of many fa-mous historical buildingsopen to the public inCopenhagen. There’s so much morethan palaces and castlesto enjoy, however. Thecity is laced with water-ways and the best way toget orientated is to take acanal boat tour the dayyou arrive. And for goodmeasure, there are opentop bus tours as well, de-pending on weather. It canbe pretty cool, even inearly summer. But that’smade up for, by thewarmth of the Danesyou’ll meeteverywhere….in hotels, restaurants, shops and ofcourse the friendly Tour-

Three days in Copenhagen

ist Office staff. The citycentre Copenhagen Tour-ist Centre, attached to agood coffee shop, sets thestandard for tourist of-fices anywhere in theworld. It should be yourfirst stop.A walking tour run byCopenhagen Cool is thebest way to get into thevibe of the city. You’ll ex-perience back-street,cobblestone passage-ways in the old town andfind delightful arts andcrafts, modern Danishdesign, tiny individualis-tic coffee shops and res-taurants, flower barrowsand stalls selling every-thing from nuts to fruit, cheese and ice cream….alldelicious and too difficultto ignore. Then there’sthe famoussmorrebrod….open sand-wiches available every-where. It’s not a city de-signed for dieters. An interesting day excur-sion by train or organisedcoach tour takes you toHelsingor, site of theKronberg Castle whereShakespeare’s play “Ham-let” was set.Visiting the castle (calledElsinore in the play) youcan feel the ghostly pres-ence of the murdered KingHamlet stalking theramparts….best to go atdusk for this effect! Thereare also summer perfor-mances of “Hamlet” inEnglish for Shakespeare

fans, beneath the castlewalls. And on the way to or fromHelsingor you’ll find theLouisiana Museum ofModern Art, an absolutemust for art and modernsculpture lovers. Thebuildings are set in beau-tiful grounds overlookingthe sea with Sweden inthe distance. There’s anexcellent restaurant aswell, with an al fresco ter-race.Three days inCopenhagen is all wescheduled, to our greatregret. There’s so much tosee and do, including alively jazz scene at night, that four or five dayswould be ideal. It’s not thecheapest city in Europe, but if you buy aCopenhagen Card at theairport, you can use thisfor free entry to most at-tractions and the trans-port system….a hugesaving that nobodyshould miss.

& LeisureHOLIDAYThe Nimbin Alternative

NESTLED in the hillsabout 35km fromLismore in northernNSW is the village ofNimbin. Often called the“Drug Capital ofAustralia”, Nimbinoffers an alternativelifestyle to thoseseeking an escape fromcity life. It is a haven forhundreds of artists, writers, musicians, environmentalists andfollowers ofpermaculture – collec-tively loosely called“hippies”.Once a thriving townbased on the dairyindustry, it suffered aserious decline in the1960s. Nimbin owes itsrevival in the presentstyle to the AquariusFestival in 1973 whenlarge groups of flowerand party people formedcommunes to forge analternative way of life totraditional Australianfolklore. Now it has afirm base that stillfavours the use ofcannabis in its variousforms. The main street isa blaze of colourful shopfronts sporting bizarrenames like The Hemp

by Allan Blackburn

Embassy, Bringabong,The Stoned Fish, HappyHerbs and the timelessNimbin Museum.Slogans such as “Makelove not war”, “Loveone another”, “We areall equal” and “Nofantasy compares withthe magic of reality”abound. The inhabit-ants are predominantlyyoung but some olderhippies still soldier on.

Take a walk along thestreet and there is adefinite sweet, sicklyaroma pervading theatmosphere, especiallynear people smokingfunny-looking ciga-rettes. Now, I am not adrug user, never havebeen, but I had a distinctsuspicion that it couldhave been marijuanabeing used. The othernoticeable smell is that

of unwashed bodies. Itseems that cleanlinessand personal hygieneare not high on theagenda for the locals. In a town where one ofthe ideals is to be anindividual, it was a bitstrange to find everyonedressed in a similarmanner – loose, colourful cheesecloth inthe 70s style. Bare feetpredominate. Tatoos

abound. Outsidersstand out. Largecolourful paintingsadorn shop fronts. Each year, usually inMay, Nimbin hosts aMardiGrass (note thespelling!). This eventpromotes cannabis lawreform and includes aprotest march, a BongThrow n Yell, JointRolling and the HempOlympix. The 2012

event was promotedwith “people are not toblow smoke in anypolice faces”. Hugecrowds descend on thetown for a weekend ofserious frivolity, alwaysflirting with the law.Police do not condonethe use of drugs inNimbin and an unhappystand-off usuallyprevails. Prominent inthe main street is a large“Police ComplaintsBox”.However, the use ofcannabis is not under-cover and periodicpolice raids do little to

reduce its prevalence. The town has a policestation, hospital, pub, backpackers, and arange of local supportservices. Just out oftown is the Nimbin CandleFactory. This specializesin hand-dipped, non-toxic,traditionally-made candlesin all shapes, sizes andcolours. There is acaravan park a fewhundred metres from thecentre of town. Nimbinwill not be everybody’scup of tea but it is worth alook. Who knows, youjust might decide to staythere!

I’ve sure gotten old!I’ve had two bypass surgeries,a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostatecancer and diabetesI’m half blind, can’t hear anything quieterthan a jet engine, take 40 different medicationsthatmake me dizzy, winded, andsubject to blackouts.Have bouts with dementia.Have poor circulation;hardly feel my hands and feetanymore. Can’t remember if I’m 85 or 92.Have lost all my friends.
