Father Terry KeehanFFaatthheerr TTeerrrryy KKeeeehhaann“June is bustin’ out all over, all over the meadow and the hill. Buds are bustin’ outa bushes and the rompin’ river pushes ev’ry little wheel that wheels beside the mill…June is a love song sweetly sung.” So go some of the lyrics from the song June is Bustin’ Out All Over from the very popular 1945 musical Carou-

sel. The music was composed by Richard Rogers and Oscar Ham-merstein wrote the lyrics. The story is based on the complexities of two romantic relationships and uses a coastal Maine town and late springtime as a backdrop. Love can be complicated sometimes, and in its complexity we can experience some of the most enduring qualities of love such as trust, fi delity, support and loyalty. Sometimes true love is tough, and those of you who have struggled to love in the midst of addiction and character fl aws know what I mean. Actually all of us who have loved deeply know the struggles involved with it to some degree. That is why I so consistently say that the most powerful manifestation of the Paschal Mystery is in love relationships. In other words, we experience the suffering, death and Resurrection; the heartache, the putting behind and the new life of our earthly journey most powerfully in love relationships. That is why Jesus came into this world, to give us a pattern that expresses so much of love and life--- suffering, death and new life. This Father’s Day invites us to refl ect on that reality and that love in the context of fatherhood; those of you who are fathers, those of you in love with father, and all of us who have fathers. I have a very good friend whose wife and the mother of his son passed away some years ago when his son was 12. He himself lost his mother when he was 13. He grew up for a period of time with only his father to parent him and his four siblings, and then he himself was left to raise his son for several years on his own. Safe to say, these two experiences have been life altering, challenging and yet revelatory of the Pascal Mystery in his life. His son was able to draw a special bond with him because in his own grief his son knew that his father could not only sympathize but empathize with him, because he had lost his mother at a similar age. Their bond is stronger now as a result. This, simply put, is the new life. If we choose to look at life through the lens of the Paschal Mystery, any signifi cant pain, any loss or death can lead to new life. It may take 3 minutes to experience that new life, it may take three days as it did in the case of Jesus Christ, but it may take three weeks, three years or even three decades. On this Father’s Day let’s acknowledge and thank all of our fathers, living and deceased, who have loved us amidst the Paschal Mystery and may still be heading for the new life. Let us thank our fathers, living and deceased, who have provided the needed male aspect of parent-ing. Let’s pray for, thank and remember fathers who found and fi nd

themselves, for whatever reason, parenting without a partner We welcome Rebecca Koury this weekend. Many of you are familiar with our Lenten charity efforts that will assist Rebecca in her efforts as the Pastoral Associate at St. Paul Mission Parish in McKee, Kentucky. Please extend a warm welcome to Rebecca as she shares her refl ections and her gratitude to us for our support of her ministry. Our director of Adult Faith, Marsha Adamczyk, our Parish Manager Ro Geisler and I recently gathered with a group of young adults in the area. They are people between the ages of 20-40. I asked them about their spiritual lives, their needs and their wants. I asked them to assist with ideas and programs that might expand what we are currently offering for this age group. This discussion surfaced some good ideas and I asked them to survey their peers in our area to seek even more feedback. We hosted a follow up meeting last week to begin to create the survey. Please look for details about this project as they arise. If you are in the young adult age group, please assist by taking the survey. If you have young adult family members, please encourage them to take the survey. Thanks for your assistance and feedback. Our mission is paramount to our identity and our impact as a community of faith. We are so blessed to have a vibrant active community that carries out our mission in so many ways. I truly be-lieve that God is calling ALL of us to support that mission in various ways. I am asking each of you to support our mission by refl ecting on and then connecting YOUR GIFTS with OUR MISSION. One signifi cant portion of that connection is our fi nancial giving. We need fi nancial resources to carry out all that we do. That is a simple fact that perhaps some of you do not wish to think about, but I do, because I want to lead efforts for us to be not only stewards of what God has given us, but the BEST stewards. I simply want to ask each of you to spend some time in prayer regarding your fi nancial support of our mission and consider that the costs involved in offering the quality of our programs continue to increase like just about every other cost in life. Once again, I ask you to give electronically. Electronic giving is benefi cial because:• It increases the fi nancial stability of the parish by helping us

to plan according to the generosity that you share and that we are so blessed to have

• It allows the giver to plan and budget according to their resources

• It is safe and secure• It simplifi es your life. You don’t have to remember to give and

you don’t have to catch up when you miss a contribution• It is easy and accessible. It can be done anytime from home,

work or when you are away. You can manage and adjust contributions through our website at www.holyfamilyparish.org

Thanks so much to those of you who currently give electronically. More information will follow in the coming weeks.

Fr. Matt EyermanPrior to becoming a priest Fr. Matt worked in a variety of different capacities, from managing a video store on St. Thomas Island in the Caribbean to planning banquets in a Chicago hotel. A Refl ection on Trinity Sunday by Colin Collette

A few years ago my dear friend Pat Lynch worked with us in the Worship Offi ce here at Holy Family and whenever I was perplexed with something, or as oft is the case something would go missing on my desk, Pat would throw up her hands and say: “it is a mystery…like the Trinity.” And a mystery it is!! This feast, dating back to the fourth century Arian controversy, has no direct biblical reference, rather it was created to underline the fact that we do indeed believe in One God, who is three in person yet one in nature and cannot be divided. Today, this feast gives us the opportunity to look at the relationships in our lives. We understand the Triune God as a relationship between the Father/Mother God, the Holy Spirit and Jesus. I fi nd it very interesting that this year the feast falls on Father’s Day. The intimate and everlasting relationship of the Triune God shines a light on our relationships with our fathers, both living and deceased. My father passed away several years ago, and while my heart still yearns for his physical touch, I so often feel his presence. As I mature and look more and more like him with each year that passes, our relationship continues to strengthen and deepen. I know one day I will be reunited with him and understand fully what it means when Jesus said, “I am in the Father and the Father is in me.” (John 14:11) This Sunday as we celebrate the great feast of the Most Holy Trinity, it is our hope that the words of Sacred Scripture, the prayers we pray and the songs we sing will call you ever more deeply into re-lationship with our one Triune God, with your family and friends, and with all of us here at Holy Family Catholic Community.

Please Note: There will not be a 6:00PM Mass on Sunday, July 6 because of the July 4 holiday.

Host A Home MassCelebrating Mass in a home setting is a very special opportunity

to meet people in a more informal, intimate setting.Home Mass date available: Tuesday, June 24 beginning around 6:30pm

Who to invite: Defi nitely invite your Catholic friends, but also consider this an opportunity to invite Catholics who may have drifted away from regular Mass

attendance, no matter what the reason. Additionally, consider inviting non-catholic friends who might be curi-ous about the Catholic faith or have questions about why we do certain things the way we do.Items needed to celebrate Mass: Use things that are already in your home: small table such as an end table for an altar, a goblet for wine, plate or bowl for hosts, small glass for water, plain cloth napkin for a purifi -cator and a candle. Hosts will be brought to your home.

If you have any questions about hosting a home mass, contact Linda Arthur at [email protected].

Plant a Row~~The Need is Great• Over 50 million Americans live in households that experience hunger or the risk of hunger daily.

• Almost 17 million people facing hunger each day are children.• 14.9 percent (17.9 million) of U.S. households were food insecure at some time in the past year.

Plant a Row for the Hungry is a locally based food drive that collects fresh produce from gardeners and distributes it to various local food pantries. Plant a Row (PAR) was launched in 1995 by the Garden Writers Association of America to encourage gardeners to grow a little extra and donate the produce to help the millions of men, women and children who go to bed hungry daily. The average age of a homeless, hungry person is nine years old! As you plan your vegetable garden this year, why not consider planting a row for the hungry and donating the extra? For the last fourteen years parishioners from Holy Family Church have donated thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit. Each week the donated produce is taken to a local food pantry. This year, hopefully even more parishioners will get involved. Tell your friends and neighbors! We need everyone's help to make this year's collection a success! Collection will begin in late July, and continue into the fall. Sponsored by Senior Connection Newspaper, the newspaper for Catholic Seniors, available in the narthex. Minimum age to participate is 3rd grade with strict child to adult ratios that must be met.

Contact Dolores Siok to make a reservation at 847-846-7683 or [email protected]. You will need to provide the number of adults requesting to attend and the grade levels of children 3rd grade and up. Registration forms are also available in the social justice kiosk located in the narthex.

Habitat for Humanity Ministry

Needs a Co-leaderHoly Family’s Habitat for Humanity ministry is completing its 11th home in the past 12 years. Holy Family has been a valuable member of the partnership in terms of pro-viding fi nancial support and volunteers. Our current ministry leader, Larry Buettner, is in need of a co-leader to serve with him. This important ministry supports our social jus-tice mission by providing families with much needed affordable housing in the northwest suburban area. For more information, please contact Larry at [email protected].

Thank you for your consideration.

Hope Out of Darkness“I was a stranger and you welcomed me..”(Matthew 25:35)

“Please help my family because we are suffering and my dad is suffering deportation and it’s not fair. Other children are suffering because their parents are getting separated,” a young girl from Panorama, CA shared with Pope Francis. She was referring to how the US immigration policy breaks apart families by deporting the parents of US-born children. Let us do all we can to preserve the integrity of the family. Tell your elected

offi cials to stop deporting parents who have committed no crimes.

Home MinistryCan you help us help others? There is a ministry at Holy Family which has taken the name of “Home Ministry.” Home Ministry is concerned with evangelization by doing for others. Two years ago more than 60 peo-ple in the parish signed up to participate to help neighbors with a meal, a ride, a visit, or a wellness check and to answer the question, “who is my neighbor?” All expected to be called on only occasion-ally when they were available, but the number of calls came only rarely. It became apparent to those who were organizing this ministry that though there may be a need and a desire to serve, the Holy Family community was not hearing about it from those in need or those who saw others in need. If you see a need that you may not be able to fi ll, we in Home Ministry at Holy Family would like to know about it and may be able to help fi ll that need. If you would like to be involved with this ministry, or you know of a need, let us know at 847-772-2646, Thanks to all who have volunteered to serve!

Refl ection Questions for June 22, 2014:

• If God longs to give us all that we need and feed us with the bread come down from heaven, why is there still so much poverty and hunger in our world.

• What does it mean to say we “partake” of one bread and one cup? What are the implications for this in our lives, in our world, in our church, and in our community?

• Jesus’ giving of his body and blood is life giving to us. How do you give life to others, especially the poor or those in need? How have you recently experienced someone else giving life to you?

Few people can deny the breathtaking beauty of Holy Family’s Cross of New Life.

Like all pieces of fine art, the Cross of New Life elicits powerful emotions. The cross captures the --

hope of a couple beginning their life together, joy of baptizing a new member of our community,

sacredness of our sacraments, and the solemn passage into eternal life.

Perhaps the Cross has moved you or someone you love. Only three, 33-inch, numbered, artist proofs of this magnificent piece of religious art remain. Each has been inspected by the artist and is

wrapped in its original packaging.

A 33-inch version of the Cross is available for viewing in the bookstore.

Please contact Rosemary Geisler for more information on the artist proofs.(847-907-3424) or [email protected]

We at Catholic Extension are delighted and deeply grateful that the loving community of Holy Family has joined with us in our mission to bring a rich and rewarding Church experience to all people, no matter their circumstances. We are overwhelmed by your generosity, as are the parishioners of St. Paul Mission Church in McKee, Kentucky, and their dedicated pastoral associate, Rebecca Koury. Following is a letter from Rebecca that expresses her deeply personal gratitude for the funds you raised in your Lenten Social Justice Project. Your gift helps fund the salary of Rebecca, who is the only staff member for the parish, which serves all of Jackson County.

To our dear friends at Holy Family Catholic Church,

Your embrace of our mission is truly overwhelming. We cannot say thank you enough for your care, generosity, and energy! We were amazed to learn that you raised nearly $50,000 to support the ministries of St. Paul Catholic Mission.

We want to say a special thank you to all the children who made beautiful cards for us! Your pictures and words of encouragement touched our hearts and are decorating the gathering room outside of our chapel.

The relationship between our parishes has become a visible gift from God to both of us.

Pope Francis has said that from his point of view, “…God is the light that illuminates the darkness, even if it does not dissolve it, and a spark of divine light is within each of us.” May we always be ready to share that spark of divine light we receive from God to kindle joy and hope in the communities that we serve.

Know of our continued prayers for your community and ministries! I am excited to visit with you all soon, and we look forward to growing and working together to spread God’s light!

Yours in Christ,

Rebecca Koury Pastoral Associate St. Paul Church McKee, Kentucky
