Father Terry KeehanAs you are reading this I am on my annual 8-day silent directed retreat. Please keep me in prayer as I embrace the sacredness of silence with a spiritual director, the scrip-tures, the events of my life, and 30 other people doing the same thing. I have attended many preached retreats as a part of various staffs and
other groups since becoming a priest, but for my personal retreat I do the silent directed version each year. I fi nd it to be the most helpful of all kinds of retreats. As the retreat begins, it usually takes 2-3 days to slow down, rest, calm down and really embrace the gift of silence. A trained direc-tor meets with you each day for about an hour during which time you obviously can talk, and speaking is an essential part of the celebration of the Eucharist each day, but all other times are in silence. Retreatants are encouraged to mark off 4-5 one hour segments which focus on a passage, a portion or even a word of scripture or a phrase that is reworded to fi t the experience of the person refl ecting. Writing, note taking, journaling or other forms of written prayer are highly recom-mended. Silence is kept by all during meals. The director assists in refl ecting on both the events and spiritual movements of your life and suggests scripture passages to pray with that are connected with those events and movements. The scriptures are not only stories that have been written down by people inspired by God, they are rooted in human experience, and because they are both of these they are such signifi cant tools and vehicles for prayer. The connection between our lives and the scriptures form the content on which the silence is used for refl ection. This is really the core of a silent directed retreat. Our lives are sacred and the spiritual movements, the meaning of events, both uplifting and tragic, are the arena in which the incarnate word of God is manifest in the world. Almost all of these experiences are richer, deeper and more meaningful than we can imagine, and prolonged refl ection in silence can help us to make sense of them in a very powerful way. God is at work in our lives and, in my opinion, a silent directed retreat is one of the best ways to uncover that work. Notice I am talking about a silent directed retreat, not simply a silent re-treat. I tried one of those one year during which I attempted to navigate the silence and direction on my own. Although still helpful, I didn’t fi nd it as enriching as being directed by a trained spiritual leader. Many of you have heard me share my experiences of this type of retreat and the peak experience for me was the 30 day silent directed retreat that more fully follows the spiritual exercises of Ignatius Loyola. I did that retreat in 1993 at the El Retiro Jesuit Retreat House in Los Altos, California. Many of you have heard my line about silent directed retreats and
I think it is worth repeating. It is amazing how God can speak to you when you shut up. Please know that all of you will be in my deep, refl ective prayer this week and always. If you are interested in a weekend silent directed retreat, there are many retreat houses in the Chicago land area that offer them. The closest is the Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington. Their number is 847-381-1261. Holy Family Catholic Academy classes begin this Wednesday, August 21. Please welcome our faculty, staff, parents and students back for another great year. Our new principal, Kate O’Brien, and all of our teachers and offi ce staff have been working hard preparing for the coming year and one of the highlights of that preparation was the two day retreat that they participated in this past week that culminated in a barbeque along with the parish staff this past Friday. Please feel free to contact Kate or anyone in the Academy Offi ce for more information about our innovative and faith-based Catholic curriculum. We still have openings in many grades including the many pre-school options and Deb Atkins is very willing to conduct tours or help with any information that you might need. She can be contacted at 847-907-3461 . Please keep our beloved Friar Johnpaul Cafi ero and his family in your prayers as they mourn the passing of his mom, Alice. She passed away last Saturday as JP was holding her. The family and friends gathered for a wake and Mass in their home of Bayonne, New Jersey on Tuesday. JP’s father John passed away in January, so the family has had to navi-gate two losses in a short period of time. May God be with the Cafi ero family in a special way and may Alice and John rest together in peace. As you may have heard, Fr. Bill Zavaski was scheduled to preside at last weekend’s 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. Masses but he experienced a detached retina on Saturday morning and underwent surgery on Sunday. He has reported that his sur-geon was extremely pleased with the outcome and he thanks all of us for our prayers. We will welcome Bill back with us as soon as he is able. One of the hallmarks of our vibrant community here at Holy Family is our vibrant worship. It is a cornerstone of our mission statement. I have been so impressed recently with several experiences of singing and musicianship by mem-bers of our community and it has reminded me of the wealth of talent in our parish. God has blessed us with many gifted people and particularly those who can sing. A great way to share the gift of music that God may have blessed you with (and you developed by hard work and practice) is to join our choir. Colin would be very open to any of you interested in joining the choir. Also your personal encouragement of any talented singer or musician in our community is more impor-tant than you think. If you know of a potential choir member or musician, please personally encourage them to contact Jill in the Worship Offi ce at 847-907-3440.

Refl ection Questions
Prayer Reflection:
20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10Jeremiah, prophet to the Hebrew people, felt the inner call to speak out to the people against the political leaders of the day and remind them to return to God with fi delity. The prophet remained faithful and focused to his call, then was thrown into a well to die by those political leaders. A court at-tendant, speaking to the King about the consequences of disregarding the life of a prophet, secured his rescue from imminent death.
Hebrews 12:1-4Today’s message from the letter to the Hebrews is perseverance, as we struggle through life’s oppositions and encounters with hardships, keeping our eye on Jesus. This call is to stay focused on the joy that came to Jesus as he persevered toward death on the cross for our sake. He en-dured opposition from sinners so that we may not lose heart in our struggles against sin.
Luke 12:49-53Today’s Gospel from Luke reminds us of the purifying effects of fi re. Jesus said, “I come to set the earth on fi re; “this fi re will be quenched with the Baptism of his death.” Jesus stays focused on his mission, know-ing that his mission will bring reactions of diverse responses to the point of divisions in relationships, even in families. Disciples who seek peace will discover its cost to be carrying the cross of forgiveness toward peace.
1. What is your God given vision of what your life must be about?
2. Perseverance through struggle demands a focus on what?
Lord, we ask that you set our hearts on fi re, so we may stay focused on your love and forgive-ness. Enlighten our eyes, our minds and our hearts to respond with courage to struggles and gratitude in the awareness of ours needs for forgiveness.
For discussion about your “God given vision” or about this message please call 847-907-2413 (Spiritual Direction line) or email [email protected]

The 113th Congress of the United States is considering changes in immigration law.
The Senate passed an immigration bill in June and now we need our house represen-tatives to support compassionate immigration reform that preserves family unity as it’s corner-stone. Now is the time to revise an immigration system that separates spouses
from each other and their children and devastates thousands of families through deportations.
How do we let others know we support family-based immigration reform? ACTION: Please ask your Congressional Representative to support comprehensive immigration reform that maintains family unity. Contact your representative at 1-866-220-0044 or

Th e Need“Th e homeless have no hope,” says Steven, a poised and thoughtful young man whose parents died when he was young. He became homeless at age 19 when he lost his job.
Homeless men and women often feel there is nowhere to turn. Many have given up and withdrawn. Th e need for housing and comprehensive services for homeless indi-viduals has grown exponentially over the past few years.
Our ProgramTh e Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health off ers a Transitional Living Program (TLP) designed to provide housing and sup-portive services for the homeless. Th e need is signifi cant and the Program has a waiting list. When Steven applied for the Program, he understood it could take up to a year until a place opened for him. Still living on the streets, he patiently prepared to wait.
ExpansionIn May 2011, thanks to private dona-tions from generous community members, Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health (ABCMH) created the Sy and Anne Okner Transitional Living Program. Th e Okners were lifelong philanthropist who believed in ‘giving a hand up, not a hand out.’ Th ose who contributed to the TLP expansion felt it would be a fi tting legacy because it helps the
most vulnerable rejoin society.
Th is program added housing and support for an additional 10 individuals to enter our existing Transitional Living Program (TLP). Th ese units are earmarked for individuals who struggle with mental illness, homeless-ness, and experience limited access to needed services. A full-time case manager was also hired to support the additional clients in a broad range of activities, all of which are geared to foster independence.
2012 OutcomesResults• 16 individuals have been served to date.• 100 percent are housed in a supportive service environment. • Five have enrolled in benefi ts and have moved into the traditional TLP Program (this program provides similar services for individuals with some source of income).• After 6 months, clients have an average increase of 7 points on their original intake assessment scores. Scores continue to climb the longer a client is in our care.• Clients have a 70 percent graduation rate, one of the highest in the nation for programs serving this population.

Pastoral Care & SupportHome Care vs. Assisted Living: Heath and Quality of Life By: Sarah Stevenson
Eight reasons why an assisted living facility could be better than living at home when it comes to seniors’ quality of life and overall wellness.
As the baby boomers continue to enter retirement in record numbers—a group that includes my own parents—more and more of us will face the question of how to handle their changing health needs. However, many of us will also face an even more urgent request from our parents themselves: “Please don’t put me in a nursing home.” The problem is this: when mom and dad start to need more daily care, it can put pressure on family caregivers and strain on relationships. That’s where assisted living comes in. In a residen-tial facility where there is 24-hour access to personal care, as well as nutrition and wellness services de-signed specifi cally for older adults, seniors can enjoy social contact, security and support while still main-taining their independence. Assisted living is a great intermediate step for seniors who need more help than the family can provide at home, but who don’t need the round-the-clock medical care of a nursing facility. 1. Access to Physical Activity and FitnessWith the latest in gym equipment, group exercise classes like tai chi and zumba, and personal trainers well versed in the needs of older adults, assisted living communities offer opportunities for physical fi tness that go far beyond what family caregivers can easily provide at home.2. Plenty of Opportunities for Social ActivityLiving at home can be isolating, particularly if a senior resides alone. It can be diffi cult for the elderly to main-tain their social relationships when they are no longer working. In assisted living, residents can easily social-ize with peers, not only in common areas but also through planned, structured activities like fi eld trips, dancing, and cultural events.3. A Safe Living EnvironmentFor seniors to remain living safely at home, a wide range of home modifi cations might be needed if their physical health begins to wane—such as shower rail-ings and medical alert systems, to name just two—and the expenses can quickly add up. Assisted living facili-ties are designed for mobility and accessibility, helping seniors avoid falls and accidents and providing rapid access to assistance.4. Intellectual StimulationAmong the various activities that assisted living com-munities provide are plenty of chances for lifelong learning, from computer classes to book clubs to art classes. Many facilities even offer guest lectures from
visiting scholars and professionals. Those commu-nities located on or near a college usually enable residents to take advantage of the nearby campus resources, including courses and cultural events.5. Supervised NutritionIt can be very diffi cult to supervise senior nutrition at home. Seniors living alone may fi nd it unappealing to cook for one, and it’s challenging for family caregiv-ers to monitor whether their loved ones are receiving the necessary nutrients. In assisted living, residents are served three meals a day tailored to the changing health needs of older adults. Some luxury communi-ties even offer gourmet dining!6. Housekeeping and Transportation: All Taken Care OfKeeping the house clean, weeding the garden, getting to appointments and social engagements—these are day-to-day responsibilities that often fall on caregiv-ers when a senior parent is living at home, whether they live alone or with the family. The vast majority of these burdens are relieved when older adults reside in assisted living, as the community generally includes upkeep and housekeeping in the monthly rent cost, and many facilities also offer transportation services.7. Help with Activities of Daily LivingFamily caregivers are also generally responsible for helping with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and eating when a senior loved one lives at home. In other cases, the family or the senior themselves must bear the cost of a home care aide. Both of these options can cause personal and fi nan-cialstrain on the family. In contrast, one of the most basic tenets of assisted living is helping older adults with these ADLs so that they can continue to function as independently as possible.8. The Rewards of IndependenceBeing able to maintain one’s independence is reward-ing in and of it—and sometimes that requires accept-ing a bit of help now and then. Assisted living helps seniors care for them while also offering access to an active and rewarding lifestyle. At the same time, when families no longer bear sole responsibility for meeting all of their loved ones’ needs, it can reduce everyone’s stress level and even improve family relationships. The time that adult children spend with their senior parents can then become truly meaningful quality time.
