Where are we now?

• Some staff already producing educational media and making resources OER - use these as a model

• Have run a series of staff development sessions to complement the CADARN training available

• A number of staff having a go themselves (making use of CADARN equipment and Panopto)

• A number of collaborations (with CADARN team and Glyndŵr team) underway

Lesson 1 – changing the culture takes time

• Requires a shift in culture/mindset:

– to start making use of video/multimedia in teaching

– to have the confidence to ‘appear’ in media (comfort zone)

– to have the confidence to, and be motivated to, create own media (given time involved, and knowledge required)

– to agree to give contributed resources an open licence (concerns about copyright, own role etc.)

• Need to provide technical support (using kit, software, on licensing etc.) and moral support (‘patience and reassurance’)

Lesson 2 – get your own team together!

E-Learning Developer IT Support Officer

Head of Learning Resources and IT

Learning Technologist

Senior Lecturer in Television & Digital Media Broadcast

Senior Lecturer in Sound/ Broadcast Communication

Web Administrator (Marketing)

Video Support Technician

Lesson 3 – get institutional support

CADARN project has now become a standing agenda item for the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Committee

OER policy has been drafted and due to be submitted to VC’s board for approval

Policy on lecture capture and video recording in general – also being worked on

Lesson 4 – keep plugging the project!

• Have used all-staff emails, University staff newsletters, TEL newsletters and communications via heads of division – most effective? Direct contact with individuals!

• Recent survey – two-thirds of respondents had heard of the CADARN Learning Portal project

• 50% ‘aware’ or ‘very aware’ of OER and how they can be used

I have submitted teaching and learning resources for publication as OER

I will submit teaching and learning resources for publication as OER in the future

Questions originally used in: University of Nottingham (2010) Open Educational Resources Survey (Q.4)

The University's involvement with the CADARN Learning Portal project and OER Wales/ Cymru has enhanced my awareness of the benefits of OER.

The OER on the Glyndŵr repository, the CADARN Learning Portal and the OER Wales/ Cymru showcase will help to

enhance the reputation of the University.

Questions adapted from: University of Nottingham (2010) Open Educational Resources Survey (Q.13 and Q.24)

Where do we go from here?

• Need to agree on a process of quality control for the educational media produced

• Need to agree on a process of ‘clearance’ for resources we make OER

• Will need to work with Marketing to ensure course data is kept up-to-date

• Need to continue to provide support for those academics who are interested in producing the resources (beyond the life of the project?)
