The European Strategy and Policy Analysis System (ESPAS) provides a framework for cooperation and consultation at administrative level, on a voluntary basis, between the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, and the European External Action Service, with the Committee of the Regions and the European Economic and Social Committee as observers, to work together on medium- and long-term trends facing or relating to the European Union.

The newly published report Global Trends to 2030: Can the EU meet the Challenges Ahead? is the inspiration for a revamped cycle of ESPAS events that will explore in-depth the three ‘global revolutions’ identified by the study.

The 2015 ESPAS Annual Conference focusses on ‘The Global Economic and Technological Revolution,’ and explores the challenges and opportunities that the digital revolution will bring to our economies and societies in the next 15 years.

The first day, hosted at the European Commission, addresses the Future Economy and Government: how will digital technologies transform work and businesses, government and education? What is the nature of value-creation and well-being in the digital age, and how to create the right conditions to maximise them? What will be tomorrow’s drivers of productivity, innovation and growth?

The second day, at the European Parliament, centres on the Future of Science, Society and Geopolitics: How will societies adjust facing such varied challenges as climate change and a new global middle class? How will scientific breakthroughs change our daily lives and define who we are as human beings and societies? How robust will the transatlantic partnership be in dealing with an ever stronger China?

‘The Global Economic and Technological Revolution’ will be the launchpad for a series of future-focussed debates, which will continue in 2016 and 2017 with the ‘social and democratic’ and ‘geopolitical’ revolutions.
