WHAT DOES MASTERY LOOK LIKE?

Journalism

•In 10 weeks, it’s impossible to learn about this entire subject matter.

Newspaper

•Narrow down the content of your apprenticeship…

Editorial Writing

•So that your WOW! can really demonstrate mastery of a subject

HOW TO DEMONSTRATE MASTERY

What 21st Century Skills does your apprenticeship focus on?

Have the students been practicing them?

How will your WOW! demonstrate these skills?

How will students show (and not just tell) you what they’ve learned?

Page 13: Getting to WOW! (Fall 2009)

HOW CAN YOUR APPRENTICESHIP GIVE BACK?

Citizen Teachers are amazing volunteers!

Students gain access, exposure

and skills in apprenticeships

Students relate these skills to their school,

neighborhood or community

Visitors at the WOW! see the impact of the students work

WHAT DOES PROFESSIONAL QUALITY LOOK LIKE?

•A published newspaper for their school

Journalism

•Students debate an issue about their community on stage without note cards

Debate

•Students demonstrating to their families how to take their own carbon footprint

Carbon Footprint

CREATING PROFESSIONAL QUALITY

Things to consider in

creating professional

quality:

What would your

peers and co-

workers consider

professional?

What resources do

you have available?

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

A WOW is a very special moment of magic. A shy bi-lingual 6th grader

takes center stage in a court room during a mock trial apprenticeship.

A dance troupe takes center stage with elegance and precision as they move as one to the rhythm of the music, 100% poetry in motion.

A struggling math student proudly demonstrates how interest is calculated in a savings account.

Future geoscientists start their engines at the solar car races .

The audience says:

“WOW! We didn’t know

middle school students could do

this!”

Page 18: Getting to WOW! (Fall 2009)

WOW! FORMATS

What if you are a part of a larger WOW! Showcase? Students can still

demonstrate mastery Students can still interact

with the audience as opposed to talking at the audience.

Families and school communities can be authentic audiences

Example: 3D Sketch Up Design Student demonstrates

on computer projected on a large screen how the 3D tech program works

Student takes a request from the audience and completes a design.

Student prints copy of the design and gives to audience member

FOCUS ON STUDENT LEARNING

Things to consider to leverage student learning:

What is it that our students have learned and mastered?

How can we showcase this learning at the WOW!? Will all students showcase everything they’ve

learned, or will there be differentiated roles? Aside from watching, is there anything that our

audience can DO to participate in our WOW! (note: people learn from learning)

How can we position our students to teach what they’ve learned to the audience?

FOCUS ON STUDENT LEARNING

How do you make sure your lesson plan is structured so your students

are working towards a clearly defined WOW!?

COMMON PITFALLS & STRATEGIES

The WOW! doesn’t match what students

actually did in the apprenticeships

Students don’t have enough time to practice all the

material

Little positive peer pressure from

students to take their WOW! seriously

Create a WOW! that demonstrates the

skills your students mastered

If your students have not mastered everything REVISE your plan to

focus on what they have mastered

Create mini-groups or WOW! practice

buddies during the last weeks leading to

WOW!

QUESTIONS?

Page 26: Getting to WOW! (Fall 2009)

April 10, 2023 For Audio Dial: 712-451-6050 Access Code: 620600#

Weeks 8-10 should be focused

on Practice, Practice, Practice!

During weeks 3-7 of your

apprenticeship your apprentices

should work toward mastering the skills. In each lesson be sure to tie the skills back

to the WOW!

In weeks 1-2 you want to introduce your WOW! ideas

to your apprentices

SCAFFOLD & FADE “CRUTCHES”

How to prepare students to speak in front of an audience (ideally without notes)

1. Students write their own notes with coaching, during class (so the wording is natural for them).

2. Teacher types notes in large font, double spaced, for students to take home and memorize.

3. Teacher transfers notes to key words on notecards

4. WOW! students speak without notecards

Page 28: Getting to WOW! (Fall 2009)

WHERE ARE YOU NOW?

Based on what you have heard so far, tell us:1. Your apprenticeship

week, and

2. One next step as you work towards WOW!
