Welcome to Fort LeeTHE HOME OF SUSTAINMENT


THE FIRST CAMP LEEWithin weeks after the United States declared war on Germany in the spring of 1917, the War Department acquired a vast tract of farmland in Prince George County, Virginia (between Petersburg and Hopewell) for the purpose of building one of 32 military cantonments. Construction of Camp Lee began in June. By September, more than 1,500 buildings and over 15 miles of on-post roads had been completed. Soon, members of the 80th “Blue Ridge” Division – made up of troops from Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia – began arriving for training.

Before long, Camp Lee became one of the largest “cities” in Virginia. More than 60,000 doughboys trained here prior to their departure for the Western Front and fighting in France and Germany. Included among the many facilities here was a large camp hospital situated on 58 acres of land. One of the more trying times for the hospital staff was when the worldwide influenza epidemic reached Camp Lee in the fall of 1918. An estimated 10,000 Soldiers were stricken by flu. Nearly 700 of them died in the course of a couple of weeks.

Camp Lee continued to function as an out-processing center throughout 1919-‘20 following the first world war. In 1921, the camp was formally closed and its buildings were torn down, all save one – the so-called “White House.” During the war, this two-story frame structure served as 80th Division Headquarters and as temporary residence for its Commander, Major General Adelbert Cronkhite. Years later it became known as the “Davis House” in honor of the family that lived there in the 1930s and 40s.

THE SECOND CAMP LEEWith storm clouds again rising in Europe, Congress approved the call-up of nearly 300,000 Guardsmen and Reservists in late August 1940. In September, the U.S. government passed a Selective Service Act that allowed the drafting of up to 900,000 more men for a year. And in October, the War Department issued orders for the rebuilding of Camp Lee on the same site as before.

Overnight, the area became a beehive of activity as thousands of civilian laborers swarmed into the Petersburg-Hopewell area and began building at a furious pace.

Even before the first barracks were constructed, raw recruits for the Quartermaster Replacement Training Center moved into tents in the heart of Camp Lee to begin training. In October 1941 (two months before Pearl Harbor) the Quartermaster School moved from Philadelphia to Camp Lee to begin training officers and noncommissioned officers in the art of military supply and service.

Over the course of the war, Camp Lee’s population continued to mushroom until it became in effect the third largest “city” in Virginia, after Norfolk and Richmond. More than 50,000 officers attended Quartermaster Officer Candidate School. Over 300,000 Quartermaster Soldiers trained here during the war.

There was a Regional Hospital with scores of pavilions and literally miles of interlocking corridors capable of housing more than 2,000 patients at a time. Here too was located the Army Services Forces Training Center, the Quartermaster (Research and Development) Board, a large contingent of Women’s Army Corps Soldiers and, for a while, a prisoner of war camp and the Medical Replacement Training Center. Camp Lee enjoyed a reputation as one of the most effective and best-run military installations in the country.

Following V-J Day in 1945 troop strength rapidly decreased, but Camp Lee continued to serve as the major Quartermaster field installation and as an out-processing center for those leaving the military.

Fort Lee is located in America’s Historic Heartland in an area called Tidewater Virginia, 25

miles south of Richmond and very near the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers.

THE POST-WORLD WAR II ERAUnlike the military infrastructure drawdown after World War I, there was no immediate decision to dismantle the second Camp Lee. The Quartermaster School continued operation and, in 1947, the Adjutant General’s School moved here as well, where it remained until 1951. The Women’s Army Corps likewise established its premier Training Center here from 1948 to 1954. Also in 1948, the first permanent brick and mortar structure – the Post Theater – was constructed.

On April 15, 1950, the War Department reached the critical decision to keep Camp Lee as a permanent facility, and it was renamed Fort Lee. At nearly the same time, the Quartermaster School picked up the “supply by sky” mission from the Infantry School at Fort Benning and that led to the first airborne rigger training program at Fort Lee. Then, in June 1950, the war broke out in Korea. Once again, the installation quickly sprang to life as tens of thousands of Soldiers arrived between 1950 and 1953 to receive logistics training for what would later be called the “Forgotten War.”

The 1950s and 1960s witnessed almost nonstop modernization efforts as Fort Lee’s temporary wooden barracks, training facilities and housing units gave way to permanent brick and cinder block structures. New multi-storied barracks were built in the mid-1950s, along with whole communities of Capehart housing for permanent party. The new three-story Quartermaster School Classroom Building, Mifflin Hall, was dedicated in May 1961. Kenner Army Hospital opened in 1962, replacing the remnants of the old WWII-era facility; and the privately-

funded Quartermaster Museum opened its doors in 1963. Some years have seen far more change than others, but the overall process of modernization has continued ever since.

The rapid logistics buildup in Vietnam after 1965 signaled an urgent need for many more Quartermaster Soldiers. Fort Lee responded by going into overdrive. For a time, the school maintained three shifts and around-the-clock training. A Quartermaster Officer Candidate School opened in 1966, for the first time since World War II. A mock Vietnamese “village” was created on-post to familiarize trainees with guerrilla tactics and the conditions they could expect while fighting in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Part of the sixties-era Quartermaster training program also saw the first widespread local use of automated data processing equipment.

FORT LEE AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURYAs Vietnam – “America’s longest war” – wound down in the early- to-mid-1970s, the Army went through a period of reorganization. It introduced new doctrine, weapons and equipment and unveiled new training and leader development techniques. In 1973, the Continental Army Command (CONARC) headquarters at Fort Monroe was replaced by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).

Here at Fort Lee, the U.S. Army Logistics Center was created to serve as an “integrating organization” for the Quartermaster, Transportation, Ordnance, and Missile and Munitions centers and schools. All of the traditional combat service support branches

were functioning here. There was a post reorganization and realignment in 1990. The Logistics Center, which until then had been a tenant activity, was redesignated the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM). Its senior officer would serve as the installation commander as well.

Since World War II, Fort Lee has played host to a growing number of tenant activities like the Army Logistics Management Center (ALMC), Readiness Group Lee, Materiel Systems Analysis Activity, Gerow U.S. Army Reserve Center, Defense Commissary Agency (DECA), USAR 80th Division, and several other Department of the Army and Department of Defense activities. During the 1990s, the Enlisted Supply and Subsistence and Food Service departments moved into modern training facilities. New petroleum and water field training sites were constructed. A whole new three-story wing was added to ALMC. Also, the Quartermaster NCO Academy and barracks complex was completed, as well as new on-post child care and physical fitness centers. Throughout this period, the Quartermaster School routinely graduated 20-25,000 students annually, and ALMC another 10-12,000. Two other QM School academic departments – Petroleum and Water, and Aerial Delivery and Field Services – each received state-of-the-art headquarters and training facilities after 2000.

In May 2001, the Army Women’s Museum opened at Fort Lee, with more than 13,000 feet of gallery space and thousands of artifacts used to tell the long, proud history of women in the Army.

Two historical forces in particular left their mark on the shape and direction of Fort Lee at the dawn of the 21st Century: first, the Army’s increased involvement in contingency type operations at home and abroad; and second, events surrounding the aftermath of 9/11, the 2001 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and New York’s World Trade Center. Fort Lee has frequently been the site of tailored logistics training, immediate processing and rapid deployment of specialized logistics units and personnel – for operations such as Just Cause, Desert Storm, Restore Hope and many others. That process continued with Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation New Dawn – the follow-up stability mission that began when the U.S. ended its Operation Iraqi Freedom combat mission in September 2010.

Also in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Fort Lee, like all other military installations across the country, has had to institute new policies and procedures to help protect against any future acts of terrorism. A new fence was erected to completely enclose the fort. The main gates no longer go unmanned. Protective barriers have been placed around key buildings. And now, all newly constructed facilities must abide by DoD and Homeland Security rules and regulations aimed at averting another 9/11-type disaster.

BRAC 2005 AND THE FUTURE OF FORT LEEThe long-term physical improvements that proceeded at a steady pace at Fort Lee over the last half century received a major boost when Congress passed Base Realignment and Closure legislation in 2005. The installation was given an important new mission – establish a Sustainment Center of Excellence that would serve as a focused training base for military supply, services, maintenance, munitions and

transportation. The decision ignited a whole new building boom as the fort had to prepare for the arrival of the U.S. Army Ordnance Center and School from Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., and the headquarters of the U.S. Army Transportation Center and School from Fort Eustis, Va. Also incoming was the Air Force and Navy Culinary Schools and the Defense Contract Management Agency.

Planning began for the construction of new classroom buildings, headquarters admin areas, fitness and dining facilities, outdoor training sites, barracks for students and government housing for military families. Among the centerpieces of the overall project was the $50 million Sustainment Center of Excellence headquarters building. In the summer of 2007, there was a ground-breaking ceremony on Sergeant Seay Field, the site of the new facility. To help make way for the structure, the First Logistical Command Memorial – which had been located on that site since 1974 – was carefully unmoored and moved to a more prominent spot facing the main entrance to Fort Lee.

The SCoE headquarters took 18 months to build and was formally dedicated in January 2009. It now houses the Combined Arms Support Command, logistics training and combat doctrine developers, and command groups for the Quartermaster, Ordnance and Transportation Corps. During a ceremony on July 30, 2010, the old CASCOM headquarters was officially retired and the SCoE was proudly rededicated as “Mifflin Hall.”

Other recent milestones include the opening of the Army Logistics University in July 2009. The 400,000-square-foot building now offers more than 200 courses and trains upwards of 2,300 military and civilian students daily. The colors of the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps were uncased at Fort Lee on Sept. 11, 2009. A subsequent ceremony two years later (Sept. 15, 2011) heralded the completion of the all-new Ordnance Campus on the north side of Fort Lee. Its buildings reflect the Army’s vision of ultra-modern training and living facilities for 21st century sustainers. Having reached full operational status, the Ordnance Campus will have an average daily population of 5,000, including students, faculty and administrative personnel.

Fort Lee officially marked the arrival of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps and School on Aug. 18, 2010. The transition was bittersweet, given the corps’ long-time connection with Fort Eustis, known as the “Home of Army Transportation,” but its new role under the Sustainment Center of Excellence will be vital to an Army that’s undergoing massive modernization to prepare for the challenges of current and future missions in an “urbanized warfare” setting. As a result of the combined BRAC construction projects completed in 2011, the installation has acquired 6.5 million square feet of new facilities. The daily population has risen from 32,000 (2005) to nearly 45,000. About 70,000 troops will now be training at Fort Lee each year.

Already proud of its illustrious past, Fort Lee is looking forward to a brilliant future as the third largest training organization in the Army. About 35 percent of the force will pass through its schools each year, and its overarching mission is already being hailed as the “lifeblood of Army logistics.”


There are a number of services on-post that offers military members and their families the convenience of doing their errands locally. From veterinarian and postal services to banking and shopping, Fort Lee offers military members on-post service with a smile.

FORT LEE COMMISSARYThe commissary at Fort Lee is open six days a week and stocks a large variety of food and household supplies. It is located behind the post’s service station.

Fort Lee’s Commissary is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Early bird shopping is authorized Tuesday through Friday between 7:30 and 9 a.m. and utilizes self-checkout only. For more information, call (804) 765-2254.

MAIN POST EXCHANGEThe Army Air Force Exchange Service operates the Main PX located in the Community Shopping Center in Bldg. 1605, 300 A Ave., near the Sisisky Avenue Gate. The store offers clothing and shoes, jewelry, gifts, music, health and beauty aids and more for the entire family.

They include Barber and Beauty Shop, GNC, Cellular Phone Sales and Service, Optical Shop, Optometry Clinic, Sports Shop, Phone Accessories, Hair & More Shop, and Slides and More Jewelry.At the PXtra, concession operations include a Barber Shop, Internet Café, Laundry and Dry Cleaning, Computer Repair, Car Rental, Unique Gift Shop, Brigade Quartermaster and a Novelty Shop. In addition, inside the PXtra is a GameStop Store offering new and used video games.

PXTRAThe PXtra is located on the corner of Battle Dr. and Mahone Ave. in Bldg. 9025. The PXtra’s hours are Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call (804) 862-3763 for more information. The Fort Lee Thrift Shop provides an excellent shopping source for the community. It is a great place to shop for household items, clothing, toys, uniforms, furniture, kitchen items, electronics, books and much more. Items for consigning must be brought in during consignment hours: Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30-11:45 a.m. and Thursdays 4:30-6:30 p.m. Only 10 clothing items may be consigned per family per day. The limit for other items is 20 per day. Only those with a valid military identification (active or retired) or a valid DoD/DA identification card may consign items, but we are open to the public for shopping.

FMWR ServicesThe Fort Lee community has access to a number of leisure activities and facilities on post. The Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Directorate (FMWR) provides activities from dining, gyms and live theater productions to bowling, golf, skateboarding and swimming. In addition, service members and their families are authorized to use leisure facilities at other military installations in the area.

These facilities range from a hotel and beach club at Fort Story, which is located in Virginia Beach, to the Fishing Pier on the York River at Cheatham Naval Annex. The Annex, Fort Eustis and Fort Story also have lodges and cabins for rent, while Fort Eustis has a mini park featuring a go-cart track and an aquatics center.

Some of these facilities are also open to Department of Defense and Department of the Army Civilians and their families.

REGIMENTAL CLUBThe Regimental Club has a new menu and new delicious selections from which to choose. The menu varies daily and may include items

THE SPORTS ZONEThe Sports Zone provides a great place to watch popular sporting events or just relax with friends. Featuring the Direct TV sports package and more than 20 large-screen televisions, a game is always on. Activites in the Sports Zone include: pool tables, dart games and a full size golf simulator. Various programs are offered throughout the year including Texas Hold’em, cornhole tournaments and more. The Sports Zone offers food and beverages.

The hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 4 p.m. - 10 p.m. During football season, the Sports Zone will be open on Sundays from 12 noon until 8 p.m.

THE HIDEAWAYThe HideAway, located off 5th Street beside Outdoor Recreation, offers a perfect taste of rustic bar with a modern twist. Watch sports action on any of its six flat-screen TVs. Karaoke and dance music is offered on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Indulge in games such as billiards and darts. Free pool on Thursdays.

From June to September, the Summer Concert series takes place on the HideAway lawn and outdoor stage. It features a wide variety of music, food and children’s activities.

The Hideaway hours are Wednesday and Thursday 4 p.m. - midnight, Friday 4 p.m.- 2 a.m., and Saturday 6 p.m. - 2 a.m. It’s closed on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

THE LEE CLUBThe Lee Club, located near the intersection of Lee and Mahone Avenues, provides a country club atmosphere for patrons. This is the place for class parties, end-of-course parties or any get-together. The Lee Club caters to a variety of functions from company or family parties to weddings and military balls.

The Lee Club serves lunch from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Weekly dining opportunities include Tuesday Night International Buffets from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Holiday and seasonal Sunday Brunch events are offered as well. Look for additional information in the post newspaper or http://www.leemwr.com.

THE LEE PLAYHOUSEThe Lee Playhouse operates live theater and has become one of the most active performing groups in the area, offering three program styles to meet the various entertainment and cultural desires. The main-stage season produces Broadway musicals, comedies and dramas. Evening and matinee performances are open to the community. Season tickets are offered at the beginning of the main-stage season guaranteeing great seating for a year of fine entertainment. Tour Buses are always welcome.

AUTO CRAFTS With vehicle lifts, bay space and tools, this facility allows patrons to perform minor vehicle repairs. Its rental space includes 10-slot bays and three-vehicle lifts for minor auto repairs.

Leslie Prigge, the wife of a Fort Lee solider, earned her GED just before her daughter, Emma,graduated from high school. When it came time to think about college, Leslie and Emma knewthey had a new deployment ahead of them and limited time to earn their associate degrees, sothey enrolled in classes at John Tyler.

LEISURE TRAVEL SERVICESThe Fort Lee Leisure Travel Service Office is located in the Sports Zone. The full-service FMWR leisure travel agency specializes in a wide range of individual and family entertainment options including tickets to amusement parks, local and national attractions, vacation packages, cruises and hotel reservations. LTS will assist military and DoD Civilians in obtaining discounts for leisure travel and can accommodate travel arrangements for the civilian community. ADVENTURE PARK The Adventure Park offers skateboarding, batting and a climbing wall. The park is located at C and Mahone Avenues. A new disc golf course is located nearby. Signs provide range and par information. Hours of operation, weather permitting, are: Tuesday and Thursday 3:30 - 7:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 12:30 - 6 p.m.; Monday, Wednesday, Friday and holidays closed. BATTLE DRIVE POOLThe Battle Drive Pool offers recreational swimming for the Fort Lee community. The pool ranges in depths from 3-10 feet. Two running boards provide a platform for diving and jumping and a water slide entertains the young and young at heart.

BOWLING CENTER Fort Lee Bowling Center offers 24 lanes with automated bumpers, a full-service IBPSIA certified Pro Shop and the Action City Grille. The staff will design an event to remember that includes custom menus. Fall/Winter leagues begin in September and Spring/Summer sign-ups are in May. Just learning the game? CARDINAL GOLF CLUBFort Lee also has its own 27-hole championship golf course, fully-stocked pro shop, snack bar, driving range, putting green and lockers. The course is open from dawn to dusk daily April through September, and from 8 a.m. to dusk, October though March. The Cardinal Golf Club provides tee times beginning at 6:30 a.m. daily. OUTDOOR RECREATIONFort Lee’s Outdoor Recreation Center offers a variety of outdoor activities and programs from trap/skeet, archery and weapons ranges to hunting and chartered fishing trips. Outdoor Recreation offers water-skiing lessons and various other instructional classes. Authorized patrons eligible to utilize the ranges are: active duty and retired military, DoD/DA Civilians. Empowerment Program Services/Victim Advocate assists those who are victims of domestic violence. This includes safety planning, protective orders, coordination of emergency services, community resource information and referrals.

Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is a mandatory enrollment support program that works with other military and civilian agencies to provide coordinated medical, educational, housing, community support and personnel services to Soldiers who have a special needs family member.

Financial Readiness Program (FRP) offers classes on checkbook management, money management, and budgeting. Information is available on several other financially related topics of interest to military families. Other classes are available upon request.

Information, Referral & Follow-up Program (IR&F) is designed to link service members and their family members with other military and civilian helping agencies in the community and on post. Providing information and referrals is one of the primary functions of ACS.

Army Volunteer Corps (AVC) provides assistance in the recruitment, training and recognition of installation volunteers and maintains a database of volunteer positions available on the installation.

New Parent Support Program (NPSP) offers services from a licensed professional to expectant parents and parents of newborns through three years of age. The New Parent Support Home Visitors can visit with you at home or can schedule an office visit. Services are tailored to your Family’s needs and goals.

Relocation Readiness Program provides assistance to military members and their families in transition by maintaining current

information on installations worldwide and operating a lending closet for temporary use of basic household items. Relocation workshops can help reduce the stress associated with moving.

Workshops cover a variety of topics, including pay and allowances, household goods, move-related stress and helping children cope with relocation.

Family Advocacy Program (FAP) supports readiness by building healthy families and sustains strong communities by providing comprehensive approaches to prevention, identification, and intervention of child and spouse abuse in military families.

Classes on Parenting, 5 Love Languages, Anger and Stress Management, Single Parent Support and others available upon request.

Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) connects survivors with people who can help you move forward and find strength. Many times after you have lost a loved one, there are unresolved issues or questions that may surface months or years after the loss. We are there to help and provide you with needed resources. SOS demonstrates the Army’s commitment to families of the fallen.

Sexual Assault Prevention and Prevention Program is committed to supporting and caring for victims of sexual assault and to ensuring that victims are treated according to Army policy.

This program reinforces the Army’s commitment to eliminate incidents of sexual assault that centers on prevention (education and training), immediate response (victim advocacy), and follow-up. The Army policy promotes sensitive and confidential care for victims of sexual assault and accountability for those who commit these acts.members and their families in transition by maintaining current these acts.

VOILET BANKIn 1777, shipping merchant Thomas Shore purchased 144 acres atop Archer’s Hill naming the property, Violet Bank. The present building, owned by the City of Colonial Heights, replaces the first house constructed by Thomas Shore, destroyed by fire in 1810, and rebuilt by his widow, Jane Grey. Violet Bank Museum is a su-perb document of Federal Design and American Interior Decorative Arts. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and a Virginia Historic Landmark. With an interpretive period spanning 1815 to 1873, the Museum served as General Robert E. Lee’s Headquarters during the first six months of the Petersburg’s campaign in 1864, the Southern Confederacy’s “Last Stand” in its fight to achieve in-dependence. The Museum maintains an array of artifacts: guns, furnitrue, swords, glass and ceramics. Closed on Mondays, the Vio-let Bank Museum is located at 303 Virginia Avenue - one block off the Boulevard at South end of Colonial Heights.

SWIFT CREEK MILLHoused in a 350-year-old grist mill (believed to be the nation’s oldest), Swift Creek Mill Theatre offers a range of theatrical fare. Its musicals are always smash hits. It can be reached directly via U.S. Highway 1 or via Interstate 95 South. The Swift Creek Mill Theatre is open year-round and has been popular with Richmond theatergo-ers for many years. Tickets may be purchased for dinner and theater or for the theater only. It also offers a daytime theater series for children. The mill is located at 17401 Jefferson Davis Highway.

KEYSTONE TRACTORWORKS MUSEUMOne of the largest private collections of pre-1960 totally restored tractors, collectible cars and antique trucks on the east coast. The museum encompasses over 65,000 square feet. It also have a gift shop which carries Ertl and Speccast collectibles as well as John Deere and Farmall apparel and gifts – something for every tractor enthusiast. The museum is located at 880 W Roslyn Rd.

DOGWOOD TRACE GOLF COURSELocated just outside historic Old Towne Petersburg, boasts a cham-pionship layout designed by architect Tom Clark. Stretching over 6700 yards from the back tees while playing to a par 72, the course features four different sets of tee boxes and can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. Players will find extensive bunkering, lakes and ponds with bulkheads that come into play on several

holes, and well-manicured, challenging greens. The state of the art practice facility includes a putting green, bunker, chipping green, and expansive grass driving range. BLANDFORD CHURCHBlandford Church was built in 1735 as the seat of worship for members of Bristol Parish. The church building was abandoned in 1806 when membership in its congregation dwindled as a result of the consecration of a new church building in downtown Petersburg. In 1901, work began to restore the building for use as a Confeder-ate Memorial chapel. The Ladies Memorial Association of Peters-burg organized the restoration campaign. As part of the restora-tion project, the Ladies Memorial Association solicited funds from each former Confederate state for the creation and installation of a stained glass window in memory of the Confederate soldiers from that state. The church is located at 319 South Crater Rd.

SIEGE MUSEUMHoused in the ca. 1839 Exchange Building, the Siege Museum interprets civilian life in Pe-tersburg before, during, and im-mediately after the Civil War. Through artifacts, documents and photographs, emphasis is given to the ten-month siege of Petersburg (June 1864 - April 1865) - the longest period of time that an Ameri-can city has been under a military siege. The exhibition illustrates how the siege impacted civilian life in Petersburg. In addition to the per-manent exhibitions, visitors to the Siege Museum can view the film, “The Echoes Still Remain” narrated by the late film star and Peters-burg native Joseph Cotten. The eighteen-minute film shown on an hourly schedule explores Petersburg’s involvement in the Civil War. Children of all ages enjoy searching for the treasures highlighted in this popular activity. Pick up your free scavenger hunt guide at the front desk. The museum can be found at 15 West Bank St.

CITY POINT OPEN AIR MUSEUMThis self-guided walking tour includes 25 points of interest with most focusing on the Civil War. Outdoor storyboards capture the people and events of City Point as you walk down the same streets that General Grant and President Lincoln once did. Tour begins at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Dawn to dusk, located at Crescent, Oakwood & Prince George Avenues.

WESTON PLANTATIONCome and find out how ordinary people lived through some of the most extraordinary times in American history. Listed on the Na-tional Register of Historic Places, Weston Plantation includes an elegant 18th-century plantation home overlooking the Appomat-tox River plus new kitchen and laundry dependencies. The home is notable for preserving much of its original interior. Guided tour includes three floors furnished in period antiques and reproduc-tions. An expanded gift shop is located in the laundry dependency. This year Weston Planation celebrates its 220th anniversary. Open daily on Monday-Saturday, 10:00 am-4:30 pm; and Sunday, 1:00 pm-4:30 pm. HERITAGE GARDENSImagine a place of peace and rest, a kaleidoscope of seasonal color and the music of Mother Nature. This gated park located in historic City Point features lovely gardens and a covered pa-vilion or bandstand. GRANT’S HEADQUARTERS AT CITY POINTFrom June 1864-April 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant directed the 10-month Siege of Petersburg from the grounds of Appomattox Plantation at City Point. During this period, City Point served as a supply center for 100,000 Union soldiers. Located at the junc-

tion of the James and Appomattox Rivers, it was also one of the busiest seaports in the world. Tour includes 15-minute video, Park Ranger presentation, parlor, library, Grant’s Cabin and outbuildings. Located at 1001 Pecan Ave.

CASTLEWOOD PLANTATIONBuilt ca. 1817-1819 by Parke Poindexter. Poindexter was Clerk of the Court at Chesterfield County from 1812 until 1847. The original landowner was Henry Winfree, who received the property as a land grant in 1754. Cas-tlewood is one of the finest Federal period houses in Chesterfield County, featuring a formal five-part design with molded plaster ceilings in the main rooms, two stairways to each adjacent wings and beautiful carved mantels with King-of-Prussia marable surrounds. The establishment currently serves as the headquarters for the Chesterfield Historical Society and research library. Located at 10201 Iron Bridge Rd.

MAGNOLIA GRANGEMagnolia Grange, a Virginia Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1822 by William Winfree. It is a Federal-style plantation house named after the circle of magnolias that once graced its front lawn. It was originally part of a large land grant to John Worsham in 1691.
