Our Faith

Hebrews 11:10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

He knew that earth could afford no permanent residence for an immortal mind, and he looked for that heavenly building of which God is the architect and owner; in a word, he lost sight of earth, he lost sight of earth, that he might keep heaven in viewthat he might keep heaven in view.

Riches

Luke 18:25 "For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Page 20: Genesis 13-14

Riches 1Timothy 6:6-10 Now godliness with contentmentcontentment

is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be contentbe content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money love of money is a root of all kinds of evilis a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greedinessgreediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

They Could Not Dwell Together

Because their flocks were great Because the Canaanites and the

Perizzites had already occupied a considerable part of the land

Page 23: Genesis 13-14

They Could Not Dwell Together

Because there appears to have been envy between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. To prevent disputes among them, that might have ultimately disturbed the peace of the two families, it was necessary that a separation should take place.

Abram Lets Lot Choose

As the patriarch or head of the family, Abram, by prescriptive right, might have chosen his own portion first, and appointed Lot his; but intent upon peace, and feeling pure and parental affection for his nephew, he permitted him to make his choice first.

Lesson??

Page 27: Genesis 13-14

Lot’s Choice The well watered plains

Page 28: Genesis 13-14
Page 29: Genesis 13-14

Lot’s Choice The well watered plains He certainly should have left the

choice to the patriarch, and should have been guided by his counsel; but he took his own way, trusting to his own judgment, and guided only by the sight of his eyes: he beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered, etc

Lesson??

Page 30: Genesis 13-14

Lot’s Choice so he chose the land, without

considering the character of the inhabitants, or what advantages or disadvantages it might afford him in spiritual things. This choice, as we shall see in the sequel, had nearly proved the ruin of his body, soul, and family.

Lesson??

Page 31: Genesis 13-14

Our Choices Respect for others (especially older) Listen to counsel Seek our own way Trust our own judgment Guided by false appearances Do not consider associations Fail to consider spiritual effect Results in ruin of his body, soul, and

family

Lot’s Future??

Genesis 13:13 But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD.

We’ll pick up Lot a more later

Page 33: Genesis 13-14

Promises Repeated Genesis 13:14 And the LORD said

to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: "Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are-northward, southward, eastward, northward, southward, eastward, and westward; "for all the land and westward; "for all the land which you see I give to you and which you see I give to you and your descendants your descendants foreverforever.

“to the end of the present dispensation” (Adam Clark)

Promises Repeated "And I will make your descendants will make your descendants

as the dust of the earthas the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you."

Page 35: Genesis 13-14

Promises Repeated This land was given to Abram, that it

might lineally and legally descend to his posterity; and though Abram himself cannot be said to have possessed it (Acts 7:5) yet it was the gift of God to him in behalf of his seed; and this was always the design of God, not that Abram himself should possess it, but that his posterity should, till the manifestation of Christ in the flesh.

Kings At War It appears, from Genesis 14:4, that

these five Canaanitish kings had been subdued by Chedorlaomer, and were obliged to pay him tribute; and that, having been enslaved by him twelve years, wishing to recover their liberty, they revolted in the thirteenth

Page 37: Genesis 13-14

Kings At War

in consequence of which Chedorlaomer, the following year, summoned to his assistance three of his vassals, invaded Canaan, fought with and embarrassed the kings of the Pentapolis or five cities-Sodom, Gomorrah, Zeboiim, Zoar, and Admab, which were situated in the fruitful plain of Sodom, having previously overrun the whole land

Page 38: Genesis 13-14

Lot Captured

Genesis 14:12 They also took Lot, Abram's brother's son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

Abram takes 318 of his trained servants to rescue Lot

He travels north to Dan and on north of Damascus

Lot Rescued

Genesis 14:6 So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.

Melchizedek

Melchizedek is called here king of Salem, and the most judicious interpreters allow that by Salem, Jerusalem is meant.

Very mysterious, and at the same time typical, in the person, name, office, residence, and government of this Cannanitie prince.

Page 42: Genesis 13-14

Melchizedek

In his person he was a representative and type of Christ

His name, signifies my righteous king, or king of righteousness

Page 43: Genesis 13-14

Melchizedek Office; he was a priest of the most high

God. The word signifies both prince and priest, because the patriarchs sustained this double office, to approach, draw near, have intimate access to; and from hence to officiate as priest before God, and thus have intimate access to the Divine presence. We find that Melchizedek, being a priest of the most high God.

Page 44: Genesis 13-14

Melchizedek

His residence; he was king of Salem. It means peace. Christ is called the Prince of peace, because, by his incarnation, sacrifice, and mediation, he procures and establishes peace between God and man; heals the breaches and dissensions between heaven and earth, reconciling both; and produces glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and good will among men.

Page 45: Genesis 13-14

Abram’s Tithe

A tenth part of all the spoils he had taken from the confederate kings. These Abram gave as a tribute to the most high God, who, being the possessor of heaven and earth, dispenses all spiritual and temporal favors, and demands the gratitude, and submissive, loving obedience, of all his subjects.

Page 46: Genesis 13-14

Should we “tithe”?

Abraham gave Melchizedek a “tithe of all” 14:20

Leviticus 27:30 'And all the tithe of the land…is the LORD'S. It is holy to the LORD. 32 'And concerning the tithe of the herd or the flock…the tenth one shall be holy to the LORD. 34 These are the commandments which the LORD

Page 47: Genesis 13-14

Should we “tithe”?

1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper

2 Corinthians 9:7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
