Invest in Rover! As we continue our 2008-09 Season, Rover Dramawerks continues to experience incredible growth! We are in our ninth year of production, presenting six exciting full length mainstage shows and two One Day Only 24-hour play festivals, not to mention all of our classes (for kids and adults). However, with growth comes more expense, and we need your help. Ticket sales cover only a small part of the cost of a production. Won’t you consider making a tax deductible donation to Rover Dramawerks? We will be forever in your debt. Rover is also looking for people who want to help get the word out about Rover to sponsors, philanthropists, and organizations throughout Plano and the surrounding communities. Please contact Artistic Director Carol M. Rice at [email protected] for more information. (Feel free to send email to Ms. Rice with kudos, questions, or concerns about anything Rover related, too!) Or if you just want to enjoy the show, that's great! We need and appreciate your support and hope to see you in our audience again soon. Be sure to buy your season tickets! And please join us on Thursday, March 12 after the show at the ArtCentre of Plano (just down the street) for a reception with the cast, director, and designers, as well as many of the Rover Board. Who's Who Gary Anderson is excited to be making a return appearance to the Rover stage after performing in last season’s The Runner Stumbles (Toby, the lawyer) and Shakespeare in Hollywood (Jack Warner). Favorite roles of the past include To Kill a Mockingbird (Atticus Finch), Macbeth (title role), Noises Off (Lloyd Dallas), Shadowlands (Harry Harrington), The Heiress (Austin Sloper), Much Ado About Nothing (Benedick) and A Christmas Carol (Scrooge). In real life, Gary makes a living as a graphic artist with area advertising/marketing agencies and spends any free time in the great outdoors as much as possible. Special thanks to my beautiful wife Karin and three kids, Clayton, Lindsey and Sarah, whose love and support make my theatre habit possible. Still sporting a tropical tan from playing Gilligan in Rover's Gilligan's Island: The Musical, Coby Cathey is fulfilling a lifelong dream of traveling around the world as Passepartout. When less dramatic, Coby is also a teacher of science and is a father of two amazing kids. The less dramatic part was a joke. You can laugh now. Robin Daffinee Coulonge is happy to be doing props for Rover once again. She started her prop career with Rover and is having so much fun she's forgotten how to do her real job. This will be her fifth show with Rover and her 11th show to prop. The show that was most fun to do props for was Gilligan Island: The Musical but she will never look at bamboo the same way again. Thanks to all her family for letting her shop in their homes and watching the kids so she has time to do the job right. Suzi Cranford is thrilled to be working with Rover Dramawerks for the second time. Her designs were seen last season in Shakespeare in Hollywood, directed by Carol Rice. Thank you, Rover, for such a wonderful opportunity. Suzi is associate costume designer at Dallas Costume Shoppe.

This production of Around the World in 80 Days is dedicated to the memory of Billy Mitchell, who was indispensable in the seminal days of theatre that became Rover. He will be deeply, deeply missed.

Billy Mitchell 1973 - 2009

This is Richard Frolich's first time working with Rover. He is a two time Column Award winner, and has designed sound for many area theaters including Theatre Three, Echo Theatre and the Contemporary Theatre of Dallas. Since 1991 he has produced vocational video and computer based training programs. In 2001 he founded the award-winning Texas Radio Theatre Company and has since written and produced over 60 modern audio plays. He makes his home in Arlington Texas with his wife Shannan and three children. After an almost two-decade absence from the stage, Mike Hathaway makes a return to the theatre last month playing Shakespeare in MBS Productions' critically acclaimed play A New Drama. Favorite past roles include Mortimer Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace, The Creature in Tim Kelley's Frankenstein and Selridge in Biloxi Blues. He can currently be seen in Tempest Productions thriller short film I'll Take Care of You. Mike spends his off-stage time as editor of the award-winning Tempest Productions team and designing t-shirts, gifts and other apparel for his online stores. A resident of Oak Cliff, he shares his home with three cats and a black lab named Rose. LonHendre Keggins is currently a student at KD Studio. He has made appearances in local films such as The Youngest Was the Most Loved and Attack of the Cannibaneids. LonHendre wishes to thank his heavenly Father for blessing him with opportunity, great people surrounding him, and the talent He has given him. He wishes to thank the cast for all their support and understanding. “Most of all, I am extremely grateful to have fallen into Jason Rice’s dedicated hands.” He also thanks his family and friends and his kids. “Thanks for being Daddy’s motivation.” Howard Korn is pleased to be back performing for Jason and Carol. His last show for Rover was Surviving Grace in which he played Jack, the husband. Other favorite roles were Danforth in The Crucible for the Frisco Community Theatre, Merv in The Sisters Rosenzweig for the Labyrinth Theatre, Scrooge in A Christmas Carol for Plano Rep and Andy in Love Letters for several groups. Howard is currently President of the Frisco Community Theatre and is represented by Core Talent. Nancy Lamb was Lovey Howell in Rover’s Gilligan’s Island: The Musical and Mrs. Gorf in its Sideways Stories From Wayside School. Most recently she has appeared in productions at Dallas Children’s Theater, Flower Mound Performing Arts Theatre, Stage West and Casa Mañana in Ft. Worth, and Deep Ellum’s Hub Theatre. Favorite roles include Sister Amnesia in Nunsense, Fairy Godmother in Cinderella and Mama Burnside/Mrs. Upson in Auntie Mame. She has performed in the MBS Theatre of Death and with the school touring companies of Theatre Britain, Word of Mouth Productions and Story Time Theatre. Nancy is also a sound designer/engineer, a church musician, and the proud mother of three 20-somethings.

This is Jeff Mabray’s first outing with Rover, but he's sure it won't be his last. He would like to thank his wife, Johanna and daughters, Brynna and Ella for allowing him out of the house long enough to be a part of this production. This is Sasha Truman McGonnell’s premiere performance with Rover Dramawerks. She received her BFA from OU and her Masters from TWU both in Drama. A couple of her favorite past roles have been Ava in The Long March performed in NYC and Dublin and Sofia in Two Sisters and a Piano at TWU. She would like to thank the talented group of artists working on this show. It has been a true delight. She would also like to send out lots of love to her sweet, sweet family. "Tank Tu!" Nic Pfost is among the newest members of Rover Dramawerks, and a recent import to Dallas from west Tennessee. He's thrilled to have the opportunity to play so many roles, including the show's absolute shortest. Nic is a marketing professional and web designer by day, and is learning to stop making apologies for his geekiness. He wants to thank the Director for giving him a shot, the Makeup Artist for letting him shave, and his friend Tahir for helping with one of his more difficult accents. Nic lives in Richardson and doesn't own a car. Joe Porter has worked in theatre since 2003 with the following theatres: Mesquite Community, Rotunda, Garland Civic, Pocket Sandwich, Frisco Community, and of course, Rover Dramawerks. He lives in North Dallas with The Doctor (his timelord chihuahua) and is the proud father of three great "kids" (25, 21, and 20), Chase, Leah, and Jared. In his spare time, he attempts to find meaning in an otherwise empty existence by drinking and raucous romantic entanglements. Please feel free to contact Joe if you are an attractive, available female and would like to participate in one or both activities.

Rover's Mission Searching for treasures, new and rediscovered,

for theatre "off the beaten path."

Rover Dramawerks produces lost or forgotten works of well-known authors, revives excellent scripts that have suffered from lack of exposure,

and discovers unknown gems of the stage.

Carol M. Rice is Rover Dramawerks’ Artistic Director and has been involved in some way with every show Rover has done. An award-winning playwright, she has seen productions of her adaptation of The Three Musketeers, The Dancer, and The Belle of West Texas, as well as a number of children’s plays and one-acts. Some of her favorite Rover projects include directing The Star-Spangled Girl, Shakespeare in Hollywood, and Morphic Resonance, and acting in Woman in Mind and Everything in the Garden. She will direct Epic Proportions later this season. Her favorite roles are wife to her best friend Jason and Mommy to the two cutest boys on the planet. Jason Rice last directed Rover’s best attended show of 2008, The Runner Stumbles. An award-winning composer and inventor, he counts his greatest artistic achievement being still on the Christmas list of Chicago playwright Anne McGravie, having directed the Regional Premiere of her brilliant script Wrens over ten years ago. Having seen a lot of scripts for Around the World..., he believes this to be the finest. His two sons, Stephen and Scott will no doubt enjoy it as much as he does. Their mother is amazing. Karen Robinson is excited to be working with Rover again. She has been active in the Dallas arts community for decades, working as an artist, educator, producer, administrator, consultant and volunteer. She holds a BFA in Art and Education from the University of North Texas, an MFA in Dance from Southern Methodist University and is a graduate of the North Texas Business for Culture and the Arts’ Leadership Arts Institute. Her concert work has been produced in New York, California, Houston, Austin, Ft. Worth and Dallas. Love and thanks to Lo and the kids. Richard Russell is new to the DFW area, but not to Texas, as he has been seen in Caught in the Net and Never Too Late with the Sherman Community Players in Sherman. “Great experience, packed houses, a great theater community.” Most recently he appeared with Carpenter Square Theater, OKC in The Last Night of Ballyhoo. He spent four years with Gaslight Theater in Enid, Oklahoma appearing in Complete Works of God (Abridged), Picasso at the Lapin Agile, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Wait Until Dark. He holds a BA in Communications from the University of Central Oklahoma and has worked 15 years in television production. “It is my pleasure to be here and I hope you enjoy.” Dawn M. Wittke earned her BA in theatre from Northwestern College in Iowa. Her work with Rover includes Assistant Director/Stage Manager for The Runner Stumbles and Veronica's Room; and Lighting Design for Mary's Wedding, Veronica's Room, Around the World in 80 Days...and the upcoming Days of Wine and Roses. She has also had the fun of participating as a Director for One Day Only (“Conspiracy”). Dawn would like to thank Rover and Jason Rice for another great theatre experience.

The Journey of the Journey...

When I tell people I’ve done an adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days, I inevitably get two questions: (1) Is it like the movie? (2) How did you manage the balloon? Well...I’ve never seen the movie - either of them - so I have no idea. (Sorry.) And that relates directly to the balloon question, as there is no balloon in Jules Verne’s novel. How to handle an elephant onstage, on the other hand, has been a different story! My first experience with Around the World in 80 Days was actually less than a year ago. My husband and I saw a wonderful production of the play in Chicago as we were trying to finalize the season. We thought we could get the rights to the version we saw, and that fell through. Then two more versions’ rights were tied up, and by now the show had been announced (with ever-changing playwrights listed, however) and we couldn’t find an available script we liked! Several of our friends, knowing that I’m a playwright, suggested that I just write one, and after reading the novel and discovering that all of my favorite parts of the other scripts we looked at were straight from Jules Verne’s pen, I decided to go for it. It’s a very well-written novel, so the play seemed at times to just write itself. I did try to refer to some of the other scripts for ideas, but ultimately they didn’t go in the same direction I ended up going (even though we were all going around the world.... Hmmm). When we invited the Rover board to read the script we had “acquired,” I put a fake name on it because I wanted their honest feedback (read: I was deathly afraid it wasn’t as good as I thought), and it was better than I could have hoped. The room’s reaction when Lisa Devine, my associate artistic director, told them I had written it, was amazing. I can’t thank them all enough for believing in me and in this production. I only hope you enjoy the performance as much as I enjoyed writing it. - Carol M. Rice
