Today, there are about 70 children in Collin County withbrighter smiles thanks to a program. Give Kids a Smile provides free basic dental healthcare forunderprivileged Collin County children. About 25 CollinCollege dental hygiene students participated in providingX-rays, teeth polishing and cleaning, and sealants. “It is a valuable learning experience to see the needs ofthe children and have the hygiene students apply theskills they have learned to improve the children’s oralhealth,” Susan Moss, director of dental hygiene, said. Dental hygiene student Kristin Mitchell participated in hersecond Give Kids a Smile event. She said it was rewardingfrom a professional point of view gaining real-worldexperience in a detal setting, but it’s also rewarding givingback a invaluable service to those who wouldn’t get itotherwise. “You don’t realize the extent, the severity of these kids’teeth and oral health until you do the program. You don’trealize how many dkids don’t have coverage or care,”Mitchell said. “It’s great to meet the kids. For some, it’s thefirst time for them to get their teeth cleaned. You’re theirfirst dental hygienist.” According to Mitchell, one of the most important aspects iseducation. When the dental hygiene student meets with thechild, they show proper dental health technique.

“The Give Kids a Smile event helped support just howimportant dental hygiene services are to others and whatan impact they can have in the prevention of dentaldisease,” Moss said. “The students enjoyed sharing theiroral health knowledge with the parents and children andseeing how it made a difference in their lives.”
