EVEN though gardening is my life, I’ve been the head gardener at Castle Howard for over 10 years, there’s no better day out for me than visiting Yorkshire’s gardens.

Trips are timed to coincide with the best the seasons have to offer.

So it’s one place to see the snowdrops, then somewhere else for bluebells. Come summer and my thoughts turn to herbaceous borders and vegetables. Then autumn and I’m off again to see the trees.

Yes, I visit other historical gardens but there’s nothing that lifts my heart more than finding an informal, hidden gem.

When I first started gardening, visitors rarely stayed for more than an hour. Now there’s so much on offer, with special events, children’s playgrounds and activities, conservation work, gift shops and tea rooms selling locally-produced food, that families stay all day. Seeing them enjoying themselves makes all the hard work worthwhile.

May 2010 will see the Welcome to Yorkshire sponsored Rhubarb Crumble and Custard Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The garden will then

journey to Harrogate in North Yorkshire where it will be on display at the three day Great Yorkshire Show in July 2010. Once the show is over it will reach its final planting plot at the RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate on1 August 2010. The garden will have changed by the time it reaches Harlow Carr, even we cannot grow rhubarb all year round.

In the Rhubarb Crumble and Custard Garden Yorkshire rhubarb is the star, with planting inspired by the wide variety of Yorkshire produce and Yorkshire’s spectacular landscape.

A number of plants selected bring the classic dish of Rhubarb Crumble and Custard to life. Stockbridge Arrow, an early outdoor grown rhubarb is used in the dish, while Queen Victoria, a later variety with less foliage at that time of year, is used within the forcing pots. Yellow sedum creates a river of custard which trickles over the sides of the bowl, along the York stone path and ends at the patio’s custard ring.

Feathery bronze fennel floats above the rhubarb and together with the dry stone wall, represent the crumble topping.

This is not a manicured garden and the rustic paving provides gaps for plants to establish. Soft swathes of flax

and rapeseed, with mauve and yellow accents weave through a feathering of grasses. This mix represents Yorkshire’s agricultural landscape and creates a

contrast with the striking structural alliums and red rhubarb stems.

The foreground of the garden features more ornamental species including lavender, sage and wild ginger which form a rich, fragrant and sculptural groundcover.

An authentic native mixed species hedge creates one of the boundaries to the garden

and a crab apple tree provides height and draws the eye to the rear of the garden. In addition to the Yorkshire rhubarb, a number

of specimen plants tell a Yorkshire story, such the liquorice plant which is synonymous with

Pontefract Cakes and a mature vine donated by Trevor Nicholson, head gardener at Harewood House

near Leeds.

BOLTON CASTLENr Leyburn > North Yorkshire > DL8 4ET01969 623981 > www.boltoncastle.co.uk

The beautiful gardens at Bolton Castle were restored in 1994 adhering to medieval principles, with two walled gardens, a herb garden containing over fifty varieties of culinary and medicinal herbs and a vineyard stocked with a frost hardy, early ripening variety of red grape (although historically there were no vineyards this far north).

Bolton Castle boasts a private maze and stunning rose garden. The main borders contain pre-1600 flowers and shrubs, including globe flowers, mallow, wormwood, clary, catmint, poppies, clove pinks and periwinkle. A hazel wattle fence surrounded the whole garden, protecting it from the wind and setting off the garden to perfection.

The historic walled garden adjacent to the main hall can be enjoyed by visitors all year round. An annual event in September celebrates the pear trees, first grown here in the early eighteenth century.

One of the greenhouses is home to the 200 year old Cannon Hall Vine, which was grown from a seed brought back by John Spencer-Stanhope from the continent in 1802. Its descendants produce today’s fine Australian wines.

Helmsley Walled Garden is a tranquil 5 acre retreat set amongst the beauty of the North York Moors. Dating back to the 1750s the garden was tended by 19 full time gardeners and originally supplied all the cut flowers, fruit and vegetables to the Feversham family. This came to an end with the advent of the first world war.

Today the garden is enjoying a vibrant renaissance, having been returned to its former glory by one full time gardener, a horticultural therapist and a team of dedicated green fingered volunteers.

Kiplin Hall Gardens, largely laid out by the mid-nineteenth century, fell into disuse after the First World War. Restoration is ongoing and the topiary, herbaceous borders and rose garden are delightful. 18th century Pleasure Grounds included an enchanting wood and Victorian owners added a lily pond in a glade. Woodland walks and a stroll around the lake, home to aquatic birds and wild flowers, are included in a visit to the gardens. Head gardener Chris Baker describes the garden as ‘a historical gem, with potential to become a great northern garden’.

This delightful restored 1830s garden provides an enchanting setting for Red House, a former cloth merchants’ home. Charlotte Brontë often visited her friend Mary Taylor here in the 1830s and featured it in her novel ‘Shirley’.

See scented old roses climbing arbour and arches; ornamental ‘Flower Basket’ beds and borders filled with period plants such as lilies, lavenders, black hollyhocks and curious names such as ‘Obedient Plant’ and ‘Dame’s Violet’. Stroll the Serpentine Walk through tree shaded lawns. This beautiful and distinctive 1830s style is rarely found in period gardens today.

Ornamental ponds and a spectacular fountain, secret garden rooms, classical statues, overflowing borders and long vistas, immaculate yew hedges and a sumptuous collection of plants, many of them rare, all feature strongly in these beautiful and totally unique gardens.

Woodland walks through ancient trees take you to Renishaw’s three lakes. See also the National Yucca Collection.
