Burton Agnes Hall is a magnificent Elizabethan Hall filled with treasures collected by the family over the centuries. Surrounding the Hall are lawns with more than a hundred yew topiary bushes, classical pond, Woodland Walk and through the seasons, the Elizabethan walled garden contains a glorious floral display with several thousand plant varieties; a potager filled with fruit, vegetables and herbs; herbaceous borders, giant board games, a maze, a jungle garden and a magnificent collection of campanulas.

Winner of 2005 Christie’s Garden of the Year Award.

Visitors can enjoy over 70 acres of parkland and gardens, landscaped in the 1760s by Richard Woods of Chertsey. The historic walled garden adjacent to the main hall can be enjoyed by visitors all year round. An annual event in September celebrates the pear trees, first grown here in the early eighteenth century.

One of the greenhouses is home to the 200 year old Cannon Hall Vine, which was grown from a seed brought back by John Spencer-Stanhope from the continent in 1802. Its descendants produce today’s fine Australian wines.

Castle Howard commands breathtaking views across sweeping parkland, studded with statues, temples, lakes and fountains. The grounds and gardens can be enjoyed in all weathers, in any number of ways – from a tranquil lakeside stroll, to a walk through enchanting woodland, or simply relaxing in the 18th century walled garden. There is so much to see whatever the season: from daffodils and rhododendrons in the spring, roses in summer, to bountiful vegetables in the potager and spectacular autumn colour. The extensive park was laid out by Richard Woods a follower of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in 1760. The dramatic views from the house were enhanced by hanging lawns, plantations, lakes, a cascade and rock arch and a fashionable pleasure grounds. Today, the park has been restored to its Edwardian heyday and can be enjoyed by everyone as a place to relax and enjoy beautiful surroundings throughout the year. Replanting and continuous improvements to this Green Flag site means it is always worth coming back. There is a fabulous tearoom and interesting free museum to experience as well.

The Forbidden Corner is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises created in a four acre garden in the heart of Tupgill Park and the Yorkshire Dales. The temple of the underworld, the eye of the needle, a huge pyramid made of translucent glass, paths and passages that lead nowhere, extraordinary statues – at every turn there are decisions to make and tricks to avoid. This is a day out with a difference which will challenge and delight adults and children of all ages.

Consisting of around 137 acres of gardens and woodlands, surrounding a large lake, Golden Acre has been a huge attraction since first opening to the public as an amusement park in 1932. The specialist gardens and varied plant collections are a real favourite, where horticultural trends and fashions provide visitors with inspiration and ideas for their own gardens. The café is also extremely popular and has a couple of outdoor terraces so customers can enjoy the view while sampling the home made produce.

This five acre garden, originally built in 1756, has recently benefited from 15 years of extensive restoration.

The Double Hot Border forms the garden’s central spine, extending for 120m, it explodes with colour from June to September.

There is a selection of smaller garden rooms including a contemplative garden, rose and peony borders and a cottage flower garden.

The garden has dedicated vegetable and trained fruit growing areas, half of which are individually tended by local residents, the remainder grown by ourselves and used exclusively in our vegetarian Vinehouse Cafe.

Directions: Follow the signpost for the garden from the Cleveland Way car park in Helmsley, located on the north side of the castle.

Following years of neglect, the ‘lost’ gardens at Kiplin Hall are gradually being restored to life by the Head Gardener and a team of dedicated volunteers. Each year brings new projects and the gardens are an unfolding source of beauty, tranquility and discovery. The reconstructed herb plot at Mount Grace Priory offers a glimpse into the lives of its former medieval residents the Carthusian Monks; recreating the atmosphere and heady scents of those far off days.

Using species of plant available in the early 16th Century a garden has been created to stimulate the senses of both the visitor and the local wildlife.

Along with the sensory herb plot, the uniqueness of the priory’s setting has allowed the site to flourish as a wildlife haven and is home to the famous priory stoats.

Beautifully restored late 17th century walled gardens to the rear of Oakwell Hall. The hall was built in 1583 by John Batt and was occupied by the family until the early 18th century.

The hall has significant civil war connections and also associations with the Brontës. Charlotte visited regularly in the early 19th century and was so inspired by the hall that she featured it as ‘Fieldhead’ in her novel ‘Shirley’.

The Gardens won a Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Award in 2012.

Peasholm Park is an oriental themed park that has more to offer than beautiful gardens, tranquil lake and an abundance of wildlife. This delightful restored 1830s garden provides an enchanting setting for Red House, a former cloth merchants’ home. Charlotte Brontë often visited her friend Mary Taylor here in the 1830s and featured it in her novel ‘Shirley’.

See scented old roses climbing arbour and arches; ornamental ‘Flower Basket’ beds and borders filled with period plants such as lilies, lavenders, black hollyhocks and curious names such as ‘Obedient Plant’ and ‘Dame’s Violet’. Stroll the Serpentine Walk through tree shaded lawns. This beautiful and distinctive 1830s style is rarely found in period gardens today.

Sheffield Botanical Gardens is a 19-acre garden, originally designed by Robert Marnock in the “Gardenesque” style. They opened in 1836 and are grade 2 listed by English Heritage. The Gardens are located one mile southwest of Sheffield city centre. Between 1996 and 2005, the gardens were completely restored at a cost of £6.69 million with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A central feature of the Gardens are the sweeping lawns with mature trees which create a setting for the restored glass Pavilions. Colourful herbaceous borders frame the grand central Broadwalk leading up to the Pavilions and the splendid Gatehouse entrance arch is complemented by formal Victorian bedding displays.

The gardens belonging to St Nicholas, the oldest dwelling in Richmond, are a series of compartments laid out and planted from 1905 by the Hon. Robert ‘Bobbie’ James. The renowned Rhododendron and Azalea walk and informal lakeside planting lead to the magnificent Georgian Walled Garden. Home to six National Plant Collections including Primula Auricula, Solenostemon and Chrysanthemum which form part of the magnificent seasonal conservatory displays and the Phlox, Delphinium and Aster Collections which can be found in the slip gardens off the stunning 400 metre herbaceous borders.

Situated in the beautiful estate village of Wentworth and set within Wentworth Garden Centre, these fascinating and historically important walled gardens are gradually being reinstated through an extensive programme of restoration.

Pleasure grounds of the Wentworth and Fitzwilliam families since the 16th Century, this unique garden includes; herbaceous borders, rock garden, pools and cascades, hosta and fern dell, maze, Fallow deer paddock, woodland walk and perhaps most interestingly of all a bear pit!

Further planned restoration work and development of existing areas will see these truly beautiful and little known gardens finally brought back from the brink.
