The Rapids put an end to a five-game home winless streak vs. San Jose with their 1-0 victory last Aug. 7 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Colorado had last defeated the Quakes on their home ground April 24, 2004.

Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. COL: P23 W8 L9 D6 … Gary Smith v SJ: P4 W1 L1 D2 SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes saw their winless run reach club-record proportions, playing to a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes have 25 points from 22 games on the season, sitting in eighth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH

The Timbers opened the scoring on 23 minutes. Jorge Perlaza burst down the right flank and sent in a low cross, and Kenny Cooper slipped through the Earthquakes defense to touch the ball home at the top of the six-yard box.

But the Quakes pulled even at the game's three-quarter mark. After coming on as a substitute, Alan Gordon cut inside Portland center back Eric Brunner to reach a long, looping cross from Steven Beitashour, sending a snap header inside the back post.

Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop made six changes to the team that fell 2-0 to D.C. United at Buck Shaw Stadium. Only goalkeeper Jon Busch and Sam Cronin, Bobby Convey, Chris Wondolowski and Scott Sealy kept their places in the team, with Tim Ward, Ramiro Corrales, Nana Attakora, Jacob Peterson, Alan Gordon and Khari Stephenson all dropped.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Jason Hernandez, Bobby Burling, Ramiro Corrales - Joey Gjertsen (Rafael Baca 82), Brad Ring, Sam Cronin (Khari Stephenson 64), Bobby Convey - Chris Wondolowski, Scott Sealy (Alan Gordon 56).

TEAM NEWS Despite coming back for the result, the Earthquakes saw their winless run extended to 10 games, matching the

club record set Sept. 8, 2004 – April 16, 2005. “We have tied a lot of games that we should have won. It may have been unlucky that we did not get those

wins but the table doesn’t lie,” said Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop. “We are sitting where we are sitting and it is all up to us. With us, we never give up without a fight.”

Alan Gordon scored his first goal since his arrival in San Jose, his first goal in MLS since June 11 (with Toronto FC), in the draw with Portland.

“We played well. We had a good performance from the guys. We were not as dangerous near the goal as I would have liked,” Yallop said. “I thought Alan took his goal well and I thought team wise it was a solid performance. We played a lot freer tonight. I think besides the finishing touches we played well. We had a little bad luck not to get the win tonight.”

But Gordon underwent surgery on Monday to repair a torn rectus abdominis and torn left and right hip adductors. He is expected to miss up to five weeks.

“That’s just been our season in a nutshell, right there,” Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski said. “Get a glimpse, dude does well and then an injury or something happens that puts him on the shelf for a while. I don’t even know what it is, but I don’t think we’ve put the same lineup down all year in back-to-back games. It’s tough.”

Gordon’s goal ended a 283-minute scoreless drought for the Earthquakes, eighth longest in MLS this season. The game against the Rapids concludes a three-game homestand for the Quakes. San Jose will then have

seven of their final 10 games away from Buck Shaw Stadium. “We have to look forward to next weekend. We are still not out of it. We need to start picking up some wins. We

can win at least enough to get into the playoffs,” Yallop said. COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids stretched their unbeaten streak to four games, knocking off the Columbus Crew 2-0 on Friday evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids have 37 points from 25 games, sitting in fourth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH

The Rapids opened the scoring in the 54th minute. Brian Mullan picked up a Wells Thompson pass outside the penalty area and crushed a right-footed shot into the upper corner of the goal.

Then in the 79th minute, Sanna Nyassi and Omar Cummings finally connected, Nyassi playing in Cummings and the Jamaican international coolly finished from inside the penalty area.

Rapids head coach Gary Smith made no changes to the team that came away from PPL Park with a 2-1 victory against Philadelphia Union.

COLORADO RAPIDS (4-4-2): Matt Pickens - Kosuke Kimura (Anthony Wallace 87 / Scott Palguta 91+), Marvell Wynne, Tyrone Marshall, Drew Moor - Brian Mullan, Pablo Mastroeni (Joseph Nane 83), Jeff Larentowicz, Wells Thompson - Sanna Nyassi, Omar Cummings.

TEAM NEWS The Rapids have now won four times in their last six times after winning just five games total in their first 19

league games of the season. “There was still some work to be done, and the second goal I think was needed to settle any nerves and to see

the final exchanges out,:” said Rapids head coach Gary Smith. “But the last 10 minutes of the game is probably as well as we’ve managed a game – at home or away – when we’ve been in front. I just thought in the end, the 2-nil result was a well-deserved one.:

While he did not score after netting four goals in the previous three games, Rapids striker Sanna Nyassi did set up front-line partner Omar Cummings for his first goal since April 30, in the 2-0 win vs. Columbus.

“Everyone is scoring goals,” said Cummings. “To see Sanna [Nyassi] and Pablo [Mastroeni] score last week, to me and Brian [Mullan] getting it this week. … You have multiple scorers and just scoring a lot of goals is confidence for any team.”

Mullan scored his first goal since coming to the Rapids in a late-season trade from Houston last year. He has started six of the last nine games after returning from a 10-game suspension.

“It was going to take something special to break the deadlock. Brian’s strike – I mean, I can’t believe he’s scored a better goal than that in his career,” said Gary Smith. “That is as clean as they come. If there hadn’t been a net on the back of the goal, it’d still be rising now. It just kept rising. That was a magnificent strike.”

In each of the past five weeks, the Rapids have received the first goal of the season from a player: Wells Thompson, July 16 vs. SEA; Nyassi, July 20 vs. NY; Kosuke Kimura, July 23 vs. NE; Pablo Mastroeni, July 29 vs. PHI; and Mullan vs. CLB.

“It just means more confidence, more momentum going into the next game,” Cummings said. “Knowing that you are winning games, you are scoring goals, especially going away [next weekend], it means good confidence for the team.”

But both sides of the strike partnership could face real fatigue after being called into respective national teams for far-flung friendlies this week: Cummings playing for the Jamaican national team in Heifi, China, and Nyassi for The Gambia against DR Congo in Banjul.

Pronunciations available on last page of notes. San Jose’s Record in August The Quakes are 31-24-7 all-time in August in MLS play. Last Game Earthquakes 1, Portland Timbers 1; Aug. 6, 2011; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif. With the Quakes looking down the barrel of a gut-wrenching home defeat to the expansion Portland Timbers, Alan Gordon delivered a cracking header from Steven Beitashour in the 67th minute to salvage a 1-1 tie for San Jose at Buck Shaw Stadium. The goal equalized a 23rd-minute strike from Portland’s Kenny Cooper as neither team could come up with a victory that would have been tremendously helpful to their playoff hopes. The result kept eighth-place San Jose a point behind seventh-place Portland in the Western Conference standings. Last Game vs. Colorado Rapids Colorado Rapids 1, Earthquakes 0; Nov. 13, 2010; Dick’s Sporting Goods Park; Commerce City, Colo. Defender Kosuke Kimura scored a rare goal and the Rapids earned an even rarer shot at their first MLS crown, topping the San Jose Earthquakes, 1-0, in a chilly Eastern Conference Championship at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The San Jose Earthquakes saw their surprising postseason run come to an end two steps short of winning the first MLS title since their 2008 rebirth and third in franchise history. Steady and patient play from the Rapids made sure of that, and they got the game-winner late in the first half after a number of chances skipped wide. Kimura stepped up from his spot on the back line in the 42nd minute and curled an in-swinging left-footed cross intended for Omar Cummings in the box. But the ball skipped over the Jamaican international’s foot and then past lunging Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch into the corner of the goal. Wondolowski’s best chance came in the 63rd minute when he skipped a header just wide of the post after redirecting a cross from Ryan Johnson. Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens made just one save to pick up his fourth career postseason shutout and first trip to the MLS Cup after narrowly missing a chance with the Chicago Fire in 2007. History of the Quakes – Colorado Rapids Rivalry The Earthquakes have a long history with the Colorado Rapids … They played for the first time in 1996 and the Quakes swept the four-game season series, outscoring Colorado 9-3 in the process … In 1997 Colorado won three of four and swept the Quakes in two games at San Jose … Colorado dominated again in 1998 and had a memorable win at Stanford where they edged the Earthquakes 4-3 in penalty kicks … The Earthquakes returned the favor and beat Colorado 4-3 in penalty kicks in the first match of 1999 and they split the season series 2-2 … 2000 saw the teams split the series again with the Earthquakes winning the first two meetings … on August 25, 2001 the Earthquakes scored three goals in four minutes for their second win of the year against the Rapids. Manny Lagos scored his second goal of the match on an assist from Junior Agogo. Two minutes later Landon Donovan scored on an assist from Ian Russell. Then in the 40th minute Donovan assisted Agogo for the fourth goal. The Quakes added one more and then cruised to a 5-2 victory … In 2002 the teams split the series … In 2003 the Quakes opened the season at Colorado and Brian Ching scored 53 seconds into the match and the Quakes were victorious 2-1 … 2004 began an unbeaten streak in which the Earthquakes did not lose to the Rapids from 2004-2010. The Quakes were 8-0-4 during the streak before losing 1-0 on August 7, 2010 at Dick’s Sporting Good Park … The two teams met again in the 2010 Eastern Conference Finals with the Rapids beating the Quakes 1-0 on their way to winning the MLS Cup.

COLORADO RAPIDS vs. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The Colorado Rapids are 17-21-8 all-time against the San Jose Earthquakes and 7-11-5 when playing on the road. This is their first meeting of the 2011 season. In 2010, the Rapids won at home and lost on the road San Jose, both to a score of 1-0. The Rapids have not defeated the Earthquakes in California since a 2-1 victory at Spartan Stadium on August 30, 2003. Week 21 Recap On Friday, August 5, the Rapids won their second consecutive game in a 2-0 shutout of the Columbus Crew at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Brian Mullan rocketed a right footed shot from outside the penalty box to score his first goal in a Rapids uniform. Later, Sanna Nyassi and Omar Cummings combined once again to give Cummings his third goal of the season while Nyassi assisted on the play (his se-cond of the season). San Jose Connections Rapids forward Quincy Amarikwa was drafted by the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft (third round, 32nd over-all). He was acquired by the Rapids on April 7, 2010 in exchange for a natural second round 2012 MLS SuperDraft pick. Amarikwa played in 25 games for the Earthquakes between 2009 and 2010, and started one match. Colorado midfielder Brian Mullan starred for the Earthquakes from 2003 to 2005, scoring 12 goals in 83 games (starting all but two). International Duty Two Rapids players were called up to their respective national teams for matches this week: Sanna Nyassi and Omar Cummings. Nyassi was summoned to play for The Gambia in a friendly against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday night in Banjul, Gambia. Nyassi’s participation in the match on Saturday is unde-termined. Nyassi’s attacking partner Cummings was called up to the Jamai-can national team, receiving a last minute visa to play in the friendly against China in Haiji, China, also on Wednesday night. He will meet the team in San Jose on Friday for the match on Saturday. Connecting Up Top Since July 20th, Sanna Nyassi and Omar Cummings have com-bined to score five goals for the Rapids. Cummings assisted all three goals of Nyassi’s hat trick against New York, as well as his single goal against Philadelphia on July 29. Nyassi returned the favor on August 5, assisting Cummings goal in the 2-0 win over Columbus.

Ironman Moor Defender Drew Moor has played the full 90 minutes in 66 consecu-tive regular season matches (including games played for FC Dallas in 2009), the longest current streak in MLS. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, if he plays the full 90 minutes against San Jose on August 13, he will have played 67 consecutive complete games and will tie Peter Vermes for the longest such run ever recorded by an MLS non-goalkeeper. Vermes recorded his streak while playing for Colorado and Kansas City from 1998-2000. Player of the Week For his hat trick against New York Red Bulls on July 20, Sanna Nyassi was voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 19 by the North American Soccer Reporters. Nyassi also set up the only goal not scored by him, which belonged to Wells Thompson, in the 4-1 victory. He is the first Rapids player to win the award this season. Colorado Hat Tricks Nyassi’s hat trick in the 4-1 victory of New York Red Bulls on July 20 was the first of his career. The last three Rapids hat tricks were from Conor Casey. Casey had most recently netted three in a 4-0 victory over Chivas USA on August 8, 2009. Injury Update Macoumba Kandji played 78 minutes in the Rapids Reserve game against Sporting KC on August 8. Caleb Folan has resumed regular training after injuring his groin two weeks ago. Jamie Smith contin-ues to recover from a hamstring injury that has kept him in and out of action for the past month. Folan and Smith are currently listed at probable on the injury report, while Kandji was removed from the list this week. Anthony Wallace is out for this weekend’s competition after he sprained his left knee in the August 5 home win over Columbus Crew. Goal Scorers The Rapids’ 35 goals this season have been scored by 14 different players, nine of which have scored two or more goals. The only other team with 14 different goal scorers is Philadelphia Union. Shutouts Goalkeeper Matt Pickens has recorded 20 career shutouts for the Rapids (most recently the 2-0 victory over Columbus Crew on Au-gust 5), and is currently in second place for Colorado’s all-time shutouts record. He needs five more to catch the leader, Joe Can-non, who earned 25 all-time shutouts for the Rapids.

Page 31: Game Guide: SJ-COL

Conor Casey Out In the July 16 match against Seattle Sounders FC, Rapids forward Conor Casey ruptured his left Achilles tendon. He had successful surgery on the injury on Wednesday, July 20 and is expected to be out for approximately eight months. Casey is the team’s leading goal scorer despite missing six games due to injury earlier in the season. Until his achilles injury, he had scored six goals in his last seven games and according to Opta, he was scoring on one of every three chances presented to him. Ca-sey is Colorado’s all-time leading goal scorer (48 goals in 101 games played). Season Streaks The Rapids set a team record going unbeaten in nine games (2-0-7) from April 30 to June 11. The LA Galaxy snapped the streak with a 3-1 victory at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on June 18. Previous-ly, the longest unbeaten streak was eight matches from April 25 to June 24, 2009. The Rapids tied six consecutive matches from May 7 to June 4, which is the longest streak in a single MLS season and matched the all-time MLS record (San Jose recorded six ties over the con-clusion of the 2004 season and the start of 2005). Gary’s Army Gary Smith’s first game as Rapids head coach was August 16, 2008 against Kansas City Wizards, which the Rapids won 2-1. He has an overall record of 35-28-32 and 13-21-14 on the road.

300 Club Pablo Mastroeni reached a milestone in his career by playing his 300th career match and his 200th Rapids game on June 18 against LA —only seven other players have played 300 MLS matches and at least 200 with one team. On May 7, Tyrone Marshall became the 13th player in MLS history to play in 300 regular season matches. Three Rapids players rank in the top four for most all-time games started by active MLS players: #1 Pablo Mastroeni (298), #2 Tyrone Marshall (278), and #4 Brian Mullan (243). Lineup Changes Twenty-one different players have started at least one match; Only four players have appeared in all 24 matches (Moor, Larentowicz, Pickens, and Kimura). All four have started every match, and three have played the full 90 minutes in every match (Kimura played 77 minutes in the June 4 draw with Philadelphia). Ivy League According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Andre Akpan (Harvard), Pal-guta (Cornell), and Jeff Larentowicz (Brown) were the first three teammates all from Ivy League colleges to start an MLS match together (5/4 vs. HOU). The three have combined for six goals in the 2011 season: Akpan (1), Palguta (2), and Larentowicz (3).
