Welcome to Red Dot Cricket

Dear cricket-lover,

In case you hadn’t heard, Sri Lankans like cricket! The national psyche nurtures a deep-rooted passion for the game which automatically ascribes foreign cricketers with VIP status and touring with us gives you a fantastic opportunity to play at a selection of the island’s state-of-the-art international venues. No cricketing CV is complete without a test on the subcontinent is it?!

We are based in Colombo, ATOL protected and ground-handle the entirety of our tours. As well as our local knowledge and ties with Sri Lankan cricket, we are therefore on hand in the event of any misfortune or change of heart at the drop of a hat - and agent’s fees are kept to a minimum.

Away from the cricket field, explore a beautiful tropical island to discover for yourself. Visit one of the island’s game parks, try a variety of water sports, or play golf on some of Asia’s finest courses. All the while, your experience is enhanced by a team tour assistant to guide you every step of the way.

Our close friendship with the Foundation of Goodness program means that we encourage our clients to connect with a community project born in the wake of the Tsunami disaster. We are proud to say 2011 saw the successful inception to the inaugural Murali Cup international schools tournament; what is in fact a one-of-kind community-focused schools cricket tournament to raise funds for the Foundation.

Please read on for a taster of what we are all about and what we can do for you.

Archie Fellowes, Cricket Manager.

Specialized Knowledge

With over a decade’s experience of working in Sri Lanka we know just about every beach, bar, cricket ground and hotel. We don’t always go for obvious choices because we know the hidden treasures and that is what makes our tours special. We combine our wealth of knowledge of the island with a day to day interaction with Sri Lankan and South Indian cricket to design and organise innovative tours accounting for all your teams needs.

The Red Dot Cricket Team

CHAMINDA DE SILVAChamee has ten years’ experience working for Cricinfo.com, meaning that he knows the ins and outs of domestic cricket in Sri Lanka intricately. Also a revered wicket-keeper/stalwart opening batsman on the Colombo club cricket circuit, Chamee keeps our match day operations ticking over seamlessly.

DILHARI HERATHDilhari joined Red Dot as a senior sales consultant in 2012 after eight years with George Steuarts Travels, with whom we had a very happy working relationship in our infancy. She is a past pupil of Methodist College, Colombo where she was a committed athlete. Dilhari loves travelling and is committed to improving her knowledge about new products. She has extensive knowledge in organising the nitty-gritty of group cricket tours.

ARCHIE FELLOWESArchie is a UK-based Cricket Consultant for Red Dot specialising in school tours. He worked full-time for Red Dot for three years in our Colombo oce, helping us develop our sports tour capacity, but is now working part-time from the UK in a marketing capacity. Archie was intimately involved in the development of the Murali Cup.

DIRK DE SILVA

Dirk is Red Dot’s director / general manager, which basically means we expect him to supervise pretty much everything going in his inimitable placid style. Educated at St Thomas College, in Colombo, he says of his role at Red Dot: "My profession grants me the opportunity to reveal the invigorating beauty of the earth to those who seek to nd that inner peace.” Get into that mindset and runs and wickets are assured.

CHARLIE AUSTINCharlie directs the company from the Colombo oce, where he rst established himself as the Sri Lanka Country Manager of Cricinfo.com over a decade ago. As well, he runs AML Sports Management that currently manages several Sri Lanka cricket stars, including Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga.

The British introduced many things to Sri Lanka during the

Colonial period and not all were greeted with great enthusi-

asm. However, cricket is one colonial implant that was happily

embraced and is now universally loved throughout this

island.

Cricket in Sri Lanka is thriving nowadays all around the island

after the exploits of our 1996 World Cup winning team. It is a

deeply loved game that is followed with remarkable enthusi-

asm. Cricketing is a shared passion, a unifying force through-

out our difficult years, and always a source of inspiration.

This passion and exuberance for the game makes Sri Lanka an

amazing island in which to play cricket. It is not easy playing

here – as many foreign teams have discovered to during the

past century – but it is definitely a fun and rewarding experi-

ence.

As a destination for tours by schools, clubs, universities and

representative sides, I can’t think of any cricket-playing

country in the world that offers more. I hope you will come

and experience for yourself Sri Lanka’s famous hospitality and

our great love for the world’s best game.

Kumar Sangakkara, former Sri Lanka Captain

Tour Planner

TailormadeCricket Tours do not get organised overnight, but Red Dot is here to do the hard work for you, from concept to completion. Cricket tours cannot be sold off the peg. Each tour is very different and for this reason Red Dot has a team whose sole responsibility is the design and organisation of your itinerary. We hand pick opposition, hotels and venues to suit your needs. Throughout this process a Red Dot consultant will be in constant discussion with you in order to formulate the perfect tour.

Getting AroundA luxury mini-coach is suitable for 13 people with kit travelling in a baggage van. For a group of 20-30 pax, a 33 seater air-conditioned coach is a good option. Taking two mini coaches is possible for a group with a large non-cricketing following. Alternatively, travelling on the Sri Lankan railway, first class, could be a highlight to any tour.

When to goSri Lanka’s tropical climate generally offers warmth and sunshine throughout the year. Figures vary widely from region to region. For the purposes of your cricket tour, the south-west monsoon (Yala) brings most rain during May/June. There are also inter-monsoon rains, usually in October/early November. For schools, a good time to tour is just before or after the school term season.

Getting ThereSri Lankan Airlines, Emirates, and Qatar airways offer one-stop flights from the UK via the Gulf to Colombo. Those travelling from the USA, Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia and the Far East can catch a connecting flight to Colombo from many of the main cities in Europe, the Middle East or South East Asia. Colombo & Cultural TriangleVenues

Sri Lanka's capital has a dense concentration of cricketing arenas, whether Test Match venues or school grounds. Most of the pitches are in the Cinnamon Garden suburb. Some are in Moratuwa (to the south) and Negombo (to the north near the airport). The city offers the best practice facilities as well as good hotels and night spots.

Besides the outstanding cricket venues of Kurunegala and Dambulla, the cultural triangle has a great deal to offer as a fantastic place to explore some of Sri Lanka’s ancient sites and discover some of the island’s rich heritage.

SINHALESE SPORTS CLUB - COLOMBO

The Lords of Colombo, even boasting its own Long Room. The SSC is a fantastic venue, combining Sri Lankan character with world-class facilities. The ground is kept in fantastic condition and benefits from good nets, an atmospheric bar, and swimming pool. The SSC has seen plenty of runs in the past, with messes Jayawardene and Sangakkara recently posting a record 624-run partnership.

P. SARA OVAL - COLOMBO

This became Sri Lanka's first Test venue in 1982. The ivy clad scoreboard is just one feature that makes this such a beautiful old stadium. The ground is full of cricketing heritage, not only is it the home ground of the Tamil Union, Muralitharan’s home club, but it is also where Don Bradman’s Australia played a match mid-voyage to England in 1948!

RANGIRI DAMBULLA INTERNATIONAL GROUND - DAMBULLA

Without a doubt this is one of the most beautiful cricketing venues in Asia. Looking over the Dambulla Lake, this impressive 30,000 seater stadium was built to provide Sri Lanka with a venue that was dry year round. The venue has superb facilities with world class dressing rooms, and a monstrous scoreboard, where you may have your names painted up for the match.

NONDESCRIPTS CC - COLOMBO

Particularly well-suited to amateur tours, this is the ground where Sri Lankan legends Aravinda De Silva and Kumar Sangakkara learnt the game. NCC has a distinctly colonial ambience with its wooden-floored pavilion and comfortable planter's chairs. It is full of large tropical trees and ringed by white walls rather than empty terraces, with indoor and outdoor facilities for a good training session.

WELAGEDARA STADIUM - KURUNEGALA

En route to Dambulla from Colombo, this pretty ground is situated at the foot of the huge granite Elephant Rock and overlooked by a large Buddha, and regularly hosts international teams for practice matches. With a spin attack lead by one of the all time leading wicket takers in Sri Lankan first-class domestic cricket, Kurunegala can pose stiff opposition.

Cinnamon Grand With its central location, signature touch of grandeur, and the added convenience of a good variety of restaurants, pub and poolside bar, Cinnamon Grand is an ideal resting point at the start and end of your tour.

Galle Face Regency Galle Face possesses an unrivalled Colombo location on Galle Face Green, and offers a colonial-style alternative to travellers seeking more than standard five-star business hotels. Regency wing offers a remarkable transition between old and new.

Kandy & Hill CountryVenues

The Hill Country is spread over the centre of the island and is a beautiful region dominated by mountains and tea plantations. Its capital, Kandy, is a great place to visit on tour. The atmosphere is cooler and there is plenty to see, whether it be the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, Botanical Gardens or the Pinnewela Elephant Orphanage. Further into the mountains, joined to Kandy by one of the world’s most spectacular railways, is Nuwara Eliya: a colonial hill station surrounded by tea plantations that is well worth the extra journey.

ASGIRIYA INTERNATIONAL STADIUM - KANDY

Asigiriya is owned by Trinity College, one of Sri Lanka’s most prestigious schools and producer of some of the countries great cricketers, including Kumar Sangakkara. Although a little scruffy, the ground is carved into a hillside and is overlooked by Kandyan peaks and a giant seated Buddha. After the game, enjoy a beer in the Old Trinitians Clubhouse that overlooks the ground.

PALLEKELE INTERNATIONAL STADIUM - KANDY

In the central province 40 minutes from Kandy Town and with a capacity of 30,000, Pallekele was one of Sri Lanka’s biggest development projects in preparation for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. The ground is even being billed as an upgrade from Asigiriya. Opened in November 2009, the venue now regularly hosts Test Match and One Day Internationals.

KUNDASALE GROUND - KANDY

One of the more quirky cricket grounds in Sri Lanka - the venue is a cheap and charming option, set in the grounds of Pallekele Prison where local community service is carried out. With a basic, raised pavilion and mat wicket, the pitch opens out to a view of the valley and running river.

PERADENIYA CAMPUS - KANDY

Peredeniya University provides a suitable alternative to the Asigiriya, and is also a far cheaper option. Just outside Kandy, the ground is formed in a natural amphitheatre. This is a great venue for a tour game and the picturesque setting makes up for the basic facilities. The students are most welcoming and are fantastic hosts.

RADELLA CC - NUWARA ELIYA

Radella is celebrated by Wisden as ‘one of the most scenic cricket grounds in the world.’ Mountains clad with rows of tea bushes tower over the pitch and tea pickers will stop for a moments rest and watch the match unfold. A typically British pavilion completes this unique venue. The condition of the pitch is variable and the weather can be very British also!

Earls Regency Earl’s Regency is a five-star luxury hotel perched alongside the Mahaweli River, overlooked by the fringes of the Knuckles mountain range. The hotel is designed with pagoda shaped roofs and spread over 16 acres of landscaped gardens.

Amaya Hills Amaya Hills is one of Kandy's best-appointed traditional hotels with the finest views, standing amid steep, wooded hills about 15 minutes above the town, a peaceful land of beautiful sunsets and wispy morning mists.

Mahaweli Reach This original ancestral home that has evolved from a small guest house to its present luxury hotel. The family still manages and lives in the hotel itself, providing a personal touch and maintaining the Kandyan heritage.

St. Andrews This stately Tudor-style colonial mansion, built in the late 19th century, stands alongside imposing pine trees. It has a stern exterior, but inside is a world of open fires and candlelit dinners.

Victoria Golf Chalets The four Victoria chalets and two Knuckles chalets enjoy grandstand views of the 17th Tee and the mountains beyond. Take a break from cricket and enjoy a round at one of Asia’s finest golf courses.

Chaaya Citadel In a riverside setting, this reliable 3/4-star hotel provides tranquil surroundings away from the busy Kandy, and is a great place to rest up and relax after a day’s play. Days begin to birdsong and perhaps a warm mist rolling away from the river.

Galle & South CoastVenues

The majority of tourists coming to Sri Lanka do so for the picture postcard beaches. For this reason we encourage teams to play some tour matches at some of Sri Lanka’s coastal venues. The Galle coast is world renowned for its tourist attractions as well as its iconic cricket stadium. Elsewhere on the west coast, the charming new Surrey Village ground (sponsored by Surrey CCC) lies hidden away off the Galle Road in Maggona. Journey to the Deep South for a match at Hambantota can even tie in with leopard-spotting in the Yala National Park.

HAMBANTOTA INTERNATIONAL GROUND - HAMBANTOTA

In the Deep South, Hambantota is the brand spanking new 33,000 seater international stadium that was built in preparation for the 2011 ICC cricket World Cup set in Sri Lanka’s fastest developing future city. The venue has a huge playing area - the biggest in Sri Lanka, and has all the makings of a world-class venue.

GALLE INTERNATIONAL GROUND - GALLE

Considered one of the world’s most spectacular pitches, and set below the ramparts of the 17th century Dutch fort, Galle is an inspirational tour venue. The 2004 tsunami caused considerable damage, but thanks to the response of the global cricket community - most notably Shane Warne who took his 500th wicket at the ground - Galle is being restored to its former glory.

SEENIGAMA OVAL - HIKKADUWA

Opened in 2006, this is a remarkable facility was built by the Foundation of Goodness on a site devastated by the 2004 tsunami, with support from Surrey CCC. Although there is no turf square, the facilities are excellent with a modern artificial pitch and a well-manicured outfield. When touring teams visit, you can be sure of a grand welcome.

SURREY VILLAGE, MAGGONA

Surrey Village is an aid project by the Oval Relief Trust providing assistance to tsunami affected areas. The fund raising effort for Maggona ground began back in 2005 with an international cricket match between an Asian XI including Sri Lanka’s own Muttiah Muralitharan and an International XI at Lords. The excellent turf wicket is dramatically cut into Maggona’s rural jungle landscape.

SRI SUMANGALA COLLEGE GROUND - HIKKADUWA

The Foundation of Goodness’ passion for cricket has been crucial in establishing another beautiful cricket ground at Sri Sumangala College - the Seenigama Wimala Buddhi MV ground. The new artificial wicket is set into a spectacular rocky surround, and with top quality indoor training facilities to boot, this is a cracking little cricket venue.

Concept

Tournament Format

Red Dot’s relations with Murali’s Foundation of Goodness (FOG) conceived the Murali Cup for its inaugural tournament in 2011. The event offers a forum for aspiring young cricketers to learn more about the game in a practical, but also social context. The tournament is played in typically tough sub-continental conditions between schoolboys from a diverse mixture of backgrounds. Specially invited schools from throughout Sri Lanka, including unprivileged schools from the north and east, compete against FOG donor schools from overseas.

A community element provides schoolboy cricketers with a special insight and appreciation for village life at the Foundation’s Seenigama village where they also play their cricket. Schools are encouraged to run fund-raising initiatives for the Foundation of Goodness’ (FOG) progressive Learning & Empowerment Mankulam project, a sports academy in the war-torn north west of Sri Lanka, prior to arrival. Players interact hands-on with community aid programmes and activity schemes in the village during their stay.

Away from the competition, players are privy to hands-on masterclasses with the island’s leading international cricketers and lectures on the game by special guest speakers. The educational aspect to the tournament is enhanced by Roger Knight, former Chief Executive and Secretary of the MCC, who is the tournament ambassador promoting the MCC Spirit of Cricket ethos.

The Murali Cup is an Under 18 annual tournament is played in July along Sri Lanka’s south-west coast. The break-up of teams includes five international schools and three Sri Lankan schools playing five 40 over matches each during a 7 day period. Internationals sides are invited from an open pool of schools from England, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, and South Africa. The three Sri Lankan participants include the Seenigama FoG Academy XI, as well as a side awarded invitation by the Mahela Foundation in recognition of outstanding cricket development, and another FoG school is invited from the north-east of the island.

ReconciliationA year after Mahela Jayawardene donated a coconut matting wicket to Hindu Matale College; the boys were competing at the Murali Cup 2011. St Patricks from Jaffna, a former LTTE zone, travelled south for the first time to progress to the semis. England’s Dulwich College lost in the final to the winners from FOG’s very own Seenigama academy, who received the trophy from Murali himself.

MasterclassesFOG trustee Kumar Sangakkara ran a session on batting methods and mental approaches for developing you own game beyond school level. Mahela Jayawardene ran nets focusing on batting strategy to playing spin bowling. SLC and IPL fitness and fast bowling coach Mario Villavarayen ran a class on strength and conditioning.

ForumsFOG founder Kushil Gunasekara presented what the Foundation has done since its humble beginnings in 1999 and what its targets are for the future. Tournament ambassador Roger Knight and Kumar Sangakkara, fresh from his Cowdrey Lecture to the MCC, spoke openly about the spirit of cricket and Murali and Mahela ran entertaining Q&A sessions with the players.

The Murali Cup

As the Foundation of Goodness goes from strength to strength, the need for financial support as well as those willing to donate their time and knowledge is great. There are more than 30 programmes to get involved in, described at length on their website: www.unconditionalcompassion.org

How You Can Help

Red Dot is close friends with the Foundation of Goodness Community near Galle. The charity was set up by Kushil Gunasekera in the aftermath of the tsunami, and is championed by Muttiah Muralitharan and supported by cricketers the world over. The village has a cricket pitch at its centre and we encourage touring teams to have a match here. It is a unique way in which your club, university or school can give something back to the island and its people. It is on this relationship that the Murali Cup concept was born.

We are not interested in taking coach loads of people to stand and stare at the lives of others from a comfortable distance. Red Dot encourages an interactive and constructive relationship with the community in which cricket breaks all boundaries and may even lead to long-term partnerships. A sporting academy has been built and cricket is now being played on their new pitch. Due to the expense of pads and leather balls, it is cricket ‘soft-ball’ that has evolved as the game of choice throughout this area. Many of the current national team learnt this form of the game and it accounts for many of their unique techniques. It is an extremely entertaining game and taken very seriously. Official umpires will adjudicate and crowds will gather, as you are given a thorough lesson in cricket ‘Sri Lankan Style’.

Away from the coast, Red Dot has also supported a Kandyan orphanage. A game of tennis ball cricket here is most rewarding and brings utter joy for the orphans involved. If there is another specific charity project your team wish to visit, Red Dot would be delighted to arrange this in your itinerary.

Foundation of Goodness DIVING CENTRE

Tourists wishing to go on diving and boat trips to complete PADI diving courses brings useful income to the island. From instructors to business developers and marketing specialists are needed to develop the `Dive Seenigama Lanka’ business arm. SPORTS ACADEMY

Willing sports trainers, coaches, nutritionists, physiothera-pists, life-skills experts with some experience in sports management and administration, staff development, HR and Management Training, Lifesaving and life guarding skills, and First aid are welcome. Sports programmes include cricket (including women’s cricket), swimming (including sea swimming), netball, volleyball, badminton, athletics, triathlon, beach football, beach volleyball, and triathlon.
