MAY 2015

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

It has been six months since our Provincial Chapter 2014. Following the chapter we had a “scheduling meeting” which mapped out council meetings, retreats, etc. for the next couple of years. Our first scheduled three-day face-to-face provincial government meeting was held at the Retreat Center in Wareham, April 14th – 16th. FORMATION: For some time we have been concerned with the cost of a post novitiate formation – between $50 and $70 thousand per student per year. We are not alone in this as other religious communities in the US are facing similar challenges. The provincial government and formation commission asked that we look at options. These included other theology schools in the US, the Philippines and Fiji. After careful consideration we took a stronger look at the Pacific Regional Seminary in Fiji. The cost here is approx. $11- 15 thousand per student per year. During the month of March, Stan Kolasa and

I went to Fiji and met with the Rector of PRS (Pacific Regional Seminary); the Academic Dean and Assistant; the formators of other religious orders affiliated with PRS; members of the faculty; the Archbishop of Fiji (Archbishop Peter Loy); and the Bishop of Tonga (Cardinal Paini Mafi). I also had conversations with the provincial of the Marists in the US and the Capuchin Friars to obtain some of their insights. We reported our findings back to the Formation Commission who, after discussion, made the recommendation to the provincial government that we move our post novitiate formation program to the Pacific Regional Seminary (PRS) in Fiji. As an expansion of our Province, this requires the permission of the Superior General and his council. A letter was sent to Javier outlining the steps which were taken in making this decision, including careful consideration of suggestions given by the General himself, one of which was to move to Fiji. The Superior General and his Council have given this permission which I received on May 4th. This is a NEW FOUNDATION and really a NEW BEGINNING – a new mission embarked on by our junior professed brothers with their formators. It is a courageous move and one that requires our prayers and support! The post novitiate community will move to Fiji this August (2015).

FINAL VOWS RETREAT: The time preparing for Final Vows is approaching. This is a most sacred time and one not taken lightly by the community nor the brothers who are seeking full and life long membership in the community. The Formation Commission will be conducting a one-month retreat for those brothers who are preparing for final vows in 2016. Stan Kolasa, Clyde Guerreiro, Dedi Riberu and Rich Kupo will plan and direct the retreat for our three brothers, Michael Kamauoha, Justin Carrigan and Jeremy Sabugo. Please continue your prayers for them and their formators as they journey through the steps of religious life.

SOME IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER :

Novitiate Begins November 11, 2015; Pre-Novitiate Begins January 9, 2016; Province Assembly November 7-11, 2016; Profession November 12, 2016

ASSEMBLY: The Provincial Government has approved the theme for our 2016 Province Assembly. It speaks of unfinished business...in many ways we will never finish (unless God so chooses). It has tones of hope and calls for courage. For the past three years, as the provincial government sought to implement the 2011 chapter mandates, it became

obvious that, while we seek to do good works in our outreach, WHO we are, i.e. from whence the good works come, has to revisited, refreshed and renewed. All our brothers work extremely hard in their respective ministries. I often hear from the people we serve throughout the province of comparisons made between the SSCC and others. Not that one is better than the other, but it is edifying to hear comments like – “family Spirit”, “simplicity”, “brothers”, “real heart people”, all which suggest an identity uniquely ours. I wonder if the early Christians had the same comments which would draw interest and conversion? As we begin this new term with a new government – it is my fervent hope that through our Outreach (ministries) and the Unity we seek, we may experience Renewal, not just with the Assembly, but that we may attain an attitude that is open to the changes in us for which that renewal calls.

PHILOSOPHY FOR ELDER CARE: As you are aware, a letter was sent out regarding elder care and our philosophy as a Province in addressing that subject. You have been asked to meet in area communities to discuss this in depth and to provide feedback to the provincial government by May 25, 2015. Your responses will be reviewed at our June council meeting and a final determination on which option would be best for our Province, as we move to the future, will be made in November 2015. Please know your input is crucial in helping us to reach a sound decision. Again the three options for our Philosophy of care are: OPTION 1: RETIREMENT (Variable $$ costs/man/year) Retirement is understood to mean that a Brother no longer enjoys a full time ministry appointment by the Provincial but rather may continue in ministry at his own discretion. Brothers in retirement are fully independent with the exception of housekeeping, laundry and dietary needs. This option also includes “retirement in place” when feasible. OPTION 2: ASSISTED LIVING (NRRO National Avg. Cost $37,300/man/year) Ambulatory Brothers in retirement whose needs increase as the natural aging process takes place will be provided with assisted living support services. These will include limited assistance with personal care, medication management, health monitoring, housekeeping, laundry, dietary needs, transportation and recreation as well as accessibility to participation in Community activities. OPTION 3: ASSISTED LIVING PLUS (NRRO National Avg. Cost $57,998/man/year) Non-Ambulatory Brothers who have reached a level of care surpassing that of assisted living and requiring 24-hour support and supervision will further be attended to by a part-time nurse and certified nursing assistants who will provide more extensive physical care. Brothers will remain in an “assisted-living plus” facility until such time as our ability to care for their needs exceeds the service we are capable of providing, or when serious illness or decrease in cognitive function would create an unsafe environment for the brother himself and/or the other residents, staff and the Congregation, at which time brothers would need to be moved to a skilled nursing facility *. * NRRO Avg. Cost $72,170/man/year The area gatherings will help to bring a wider consultation and ensure that every brother has a chance to contribute and hear the thoughts and opinions of other brothers. I thank the area facilitators, Stan, Herman, Chris and Clyde for doing this for us. I also encourage those who are assigned outside of the province to send in their positions.

THE STRATEGIC PLAN: The provincial government has approved the Strategic Plan which steps out the provincial Chapter mandates and decisions onto a working document. This is the primary tool used by the government to ensure that we are kept to the task of implementing the Chapter mandates. Martin Gomes, Kathy Hinds and myself have been working to confirm that the document is comprehensive and encompasses what the Chapter has called us to do. The twelve Goals outlined in the Strategic Plan are as follows: Goal # 1 The Provincial Chapter mandates the Provincial Government to evaluate and prioritize all of our Province ministries in the first year of its term, using as criteria the “Mission” document of the General Chapter 38 and the decisions of this Provincial Chapter. What we are doing: Martin and Fintan are putting together an ‘instrument’ and process to help us evaluate and prioritize all of our Province Ministries. This may take input and work from all of us – the June Provincial Government meeting will give us further direction. The Chapter gave us until November 2015 to report back with an

O U R (OUTREACH, UNITY, RENEWAL) NEXT STEPS

ON THE JOURNEY...

4

evaluation and prioritization of all our ministries. This also entails a comprehensive look at personnel. Martin and Kathy are creating a table of all our personnel, ages, reasonable years of ministry etc.. which will assist the discussion. Goal # 2 1. The Provincial Chapter mandates that the Ministry of retreats in Wareham continue and develop. 1.1 The Provincial Chapter further mandates that the Retreat Center be repaired, maintained and significantly upgraded according to the Province’s realistic capabilities including funding by a capital campaign if necessary. What are we doing: The last government committed $2 million (an amount determined and understood by the former East Coast) to Wareham. This government has to determine HOW, and with a very tight budget, this is going to take courage and some finessing. We have embarked on the Capital Campaign for Wareham with John Flynn advising and Soane Uiagalelei as Chairperson for the Campaign. They will be working closely with Stan. We are also looking at alternate personnel possibilities. In the last government this was not successful. We have to try again. The June Provincial Government meeting will address this. Goal #3 In addition to our work with the Secular Branch and Associates, the Provincial Chapter calls upon our brothers to invite the laity to join together with us in terms of Adoration, Family Ministry and promotion of the vision of Saint Damien. This will be included in the PARL of each local community. What are we doing? This will be addressed when we determine the local communities and superiors (Goal 5). Goal #4 The Provincial Chapter mandates the Provincial Government to gather brothers with experience and interest in the Enthronement process to renew the enthronement as a form of our family ministry. They will do this in collaboration with the laity, especially laity committed to the Enthronement Ministry. What are we doing? As you know from the last Provincial Newsletter, Richard McNally has been appointed Director for Enthronement. He is gently gathering information on the works of the Enthronement around the country. He will also attend the gathering in Philadelphia with Pope Francis on the family. The Enthronement work continues, even if we have not been fully engaged over the past years. Richard will let us know how. Goal #5 The Provincial Chapter asks the Provincial Government to assure that all brothers live in local communities of three (3) or more brothers with a PARL and a local superior. Brothers can be living in one location or, for pastoral reasons, several locations, but in close proximity. What are we doing? We are looking to form our communities into local communities and appoint a local superior. The role of the local superior will be discussed and articulated at the June Provincial Government meeting. We will then have a situation of local communities as being the fundamental instrument and instance of our basic structure as a province. It will be the local community that gathers, prays, meets, discusses issues and becomes the core consultative body the provincial government will turn to. This is something OLD may NEW. More will be explained as we move along with the process. Goal #6 The Provincial Chapter mandates the Provincial Government to appoint a member of the Provincial Council to be Director of Ongoing Formation (OF). The priority area would include: the renewal of community, mission, and our SSCC spirituality. He will form a team that would be representative of the province. What are we doing? We have appointed Herman Gomes as Ongoing Formation Director and Richard Kupo as head of Spirituality. As we continue the work of structuring the local communities, their role will surface. At the moment Herman has asked Richard McNally and Ed Popish to be part of the Ongoing Formation team. Goal #7 The Provincial Chapter mandates that the Provincial Government will develop a three-year strategic plan. This plan shall include a financial component, which will ensure the stability of the property and investments of the Province. The financial component will also indicate how the on-going mission, support activities and any new projects will be financed. What are we doing? The Strategic Plan has been drawn up and we have stepped out the “What, When, How By Whom and By When” scenarios. The plan has been accepted by the Provincial Government as the working document for the three year term. It is a working document that will guide us and ensure that the Chapter Decisions are implemented. The Financial and Development component is to ensure that our budgeting and reporting process is timely and complete. I use this as the preparation tool for all provincial government meetings. Goal #8 The Provincial Chapter mandates the Provincial Government to work with the Regional Government of India to develop a 10-year strategic plan for the region. This will conclude with the Golden Jubilee of the region in 2025.

Page 5: From the Provincial’s desk…sscc.org/stmaryfhvn/x_pdf/newsletters/from-prov-desk-may- 2015.pdf · THE STRATEGIC PLAN: The provincial government has approved the Strategic Plan

5

What are we doing? Sudhir, Martin, Alexis and Radhelal have begun putting together the plan in preparation for the June Regional Assembly. This is no small feat as it looks 10 years out covering personnel, ministries, formation, development and finances. It is hoped that the provincial government will be presented the 10 year plan in November 2015.

Goal #9 Providing quality care for the sick and elderly brothers

What are we doing? The former government brought in the NRRO for consultation regarding our elder care. What they have presented will help us move forward. To begin, we have to determine the level of care we can and should provide ourselves (in the NRRO terminology – our “Philosophy of Care”). You have received a letter from me with the three options and words of encouragement to meet in area communities and send back your findings. I have asked the provincial government to be prepared to make a decision in November. This also requires us to look at properties and our current under usage. This will be viewed once the decision regarding elder care is made.

Goal #10 To organize a Province Assembly half way between the 2014 Chapter and the next Chapter. The Provincial government will explore the most feasible way.

What are we doing? This provincial government has determined the theme “OUR next Steps on the Journey”. Stan and Herman will begin pulling together a committee to assist them. We have set the date for November 7 – 11, 2016, St Anthony Retreat Center, Hawaii. The hope is that once again when WE gather, the Spirit will do startling things.

Goal #11 Facilitate the Chapter Decision to approve receiving West Coast Delegation into the US Province

What are we doing? Ed and Al have arranged to meet with Martin O’Loghlen and Cindy Epperson in California to look at the financial aspects which will affect the West Delegation becoming a Region of the Province.

Goal #12 The Chapter formally endorses all the decisions of the previous Chapter that have not been abrogated by this Chapter.

What are we doing? We have incorporated this goal into the Strategic Plan.

NEW NOVICES: We are happy to announce that, at the conclusion of the current pre-novitiate program, we will have six new novices who will begin Novitiate on November 11, 2015. We continue to thank God for the vocations being sent our way. We also once again give a word of thanks to the pre-novitiate directors, Stan Kolasa and Clyde Guerreiro. Please pray for our new novices, William Gural, Gabby Murphy, Dexter Domingo, Saia Fainga’a, Eric Cruz and Darius Amansec as they continue to seek God’s will for their lives. Similarly pray for our Novice Master, Pat Fanning and Socius, Rich Kupo, as they guide the novices through the rigors of the novitiate program.

ORDINATIONS: From the Region of India we received requests for ordination from two candidates, Br. Tileshwar Nayak and Br. Sujay Sardar. Upon the recommendations of the Regional Government of India and their Formators, the provincial government has approved the requests of Tileswar and Sujay for ordination to the priesthood. Sujay will be ordained by Bishop Salvadore Lobo on May 19, 2015; Tileshwar will be ordained by Bishop Sarat Nayak on June 20, 2015. We offer our congratulations to them both and assure them of our prayers as they begin their life of service to God’s holy people.

US WEST DELEGATION: The government has concurred with the time frame suggested by the West Coast Delegation by which they will become a Region of the United States Province. To allow both finance offices to look at the accounting procedures which will be necessary for the new Region, in addition to giving them time to write their statutes, which must be approved by both their members and the provincial government, a date of January 1, 2016 has been agreed upon. We look forward to welcoming the 21 Brothers of the West Coast delegation to the Province.

US PROVINCES STATUTES and PARL: The provincial government has approved the changes/additions to the Statutes and PARL which resulted from the 2014 Provincial Chapter decisions. A copy of these will be sent out to you each Brother in the near future.

PERSONNEL CHANGES: The following personnel changes were approved at the April council meeting:

REGION OF INDIA:

Regional Superior, Sudhir Nayak, joined us for the provincial government meeting. Having just completed the Region’s Canonical Visitation by Superior General, Javier and Counselor Pankras, Sudhir gave the government an overview of the report received from Rome.

He also gave a brief report on the planning process to take place in India as displayed in the chart shown:

It is worthy to note that Martin Gomes is working with Sudhir, Alexis Nayak and Radhelal Jatwar on the 10 year strategic plan as called for by the Chapter.

In addition to the request for approval of ordination for Sujay and Tileshwar, as mentioned earlier, Sudhir also presented letters of request and support from their formators for Brothers John Albert Raja, Mahendra Kumar Singh, Lalit Toppo and Arul Thiyagraj, all of whom were approved by the government for renewal of temporary vows. The renewal will take place in India on May 9, 2015 and Sudhir Nayak was approved to receive the vows.

SSCC ARCHIVES:

Congregation of the Sacred Hearts U.S. Province Archives Receives Grant Award from

Hawaii Council for the Humanities

by Stuart W. H. Ching

The Hawai`i Council for the Humanities has awarded the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts U.S. Province a Preservation and Access Grant award of $5,000 for its Kalaupapa Images Identification Project. This is one of only seven projects funded statewide in 2014 by the Hawai`i Council for the Humanities. Additional community partners for this project include the Damien and Marianne Foundation and Ka `Ohana O Kalaupapa. In the coming year, awarded funds will support preservation and identification of over 600 glass plate negatives in the SS.CC. provincial archives collection. This grant project dovetails on previously funded projects that resulted in digitization of glass

plate negatives and purchasing of cataloging software. Father Joseph Julliotte, SS.CC., produced many of these negatives while serving as pastor of St. Philomena Church on Molokai, from 1901-1907. He visually documents people, places, and events during an important period when Kalaupapa was becoming a model for leprosy treatment facilities around the world. The photographic images show a vibrant and active Kalaupapa community, with its own occupations, celebrations, and recreational activities. His portraits of Kalaupapa residents were executed with sensitivity and respect. They provide a much needed counterbalance to the clinical photographs of the Public Health Service, which focused on the effects of the disease rather than the dignity of the person. Each person residing at Kalaupapa brought with them a past personal history. Weaving their individual life stories into the fabric of the community contributes a richness and complexity to the overall story of Kalaupapa. Together with the visual images found in this collection, these personal stories provide the threads that reconnect the people of Kalaupapa with their families and other communities throughout Hawaii. They help redefine the narrative of Kalaupapa beyond the Hawaiian government’s response to leprosy. Ms. Anwei Law, who has authored several publications on Kalaupapa, will take the lead on photograph identifications and production of an educational booklet detailing research findings and available resources. SS.CC. Provincial Archivist Stuart Ching will oversee project coordination, archival rehousing of negatives, and data entry of catalogued images into a computerized database. Ka `Ohana O Kalaupapa is making some of its resources available to project personnel for research purposes. These include documents of people sent to the leprosy settlement, and a photo bank containing more than 1,000 images of Kalaupapa residents. These images were taken by the U.S. Public Health Service, and date from 1900-1912. Project personnel will compare these images with those in the SS.CC. collection to obtain identifications. This data will then be entered into a computerized database made accessible to Kalaupapa family members and the general public. This resource will be available in the public reading room of the Sacred Hearts U.S. Province Archives, located at St. Patrick Monastery on Oahu. The Congregation of the Sacred Hearts U.S. Province is grateful for funding obtained from Hawai`i Council for the Humanities, and the additional support received from Damien and Marianne Foundation and Ka `Ohana O Kalaupapa for this project.

SS.CC. PROVINCIAL ARCHIVES VOLUNTEERS The Sacred Hearts U.S. Province Archives welcomes two exceptional volunteers who will be assisting the provincial archivist with processing and preserving the archival collections of the Congregation. These individuals bring a wealth of knowledge, skills, and professional expertise gained from years of experience in collections management. With their help, archival systems will be developed and implemented that will facilitate retrieval of materials, improve access to information, and reduce risks of damage and deterioration to collection materials.

Betty Lou Kam recently retired from the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, Hawaii’s premier natural and cultural history museum. At the time of her retirement, she was Director and Collection Manager for Cultural Collections. She first began work at the museum as a collections assistant in 1980. In the years that followed, she advanced to the positions of Bishop Museum Archives Chair and Vice President of Cultural Resources. Betty views the archival collections of the SS.CC. Congregation as “some special, irreplaceable treasure.” She realizes the importance of caring for and preserving this collection, and says of her work as a provincial archives volunteer: “Itʻs a good feeling to be a part of this!” In addition to volunteering her time in the provincial archives, Betty also volunteers as Director of Religious Education at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish at Waikane, Oahu.

Ruth Horie is a retired catalog librarian from Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She holds a B.A. in Hawaiian Studies, a M.L.S. in Library Studies, and a M.A. in Linguistics. After receiving an overview of the Congregation’s collections, Ruth expressed a particular interest in wanting to catalog Hawaiian-language materials. For this task, her educational background, language skills, and work experience have prepared her well. She is a former president of the Hawaii Library Association and has professional memberships in Online Audiovisual Catalogers and Pacific Islands Association of Libraries, Archives and Museums. She received the Hawaii Library Association Notable Member Award in 2010. When asked about why she volunteers at the provincial archives, Ruth stated: “I’m grateful for this opportunity to learn more about church history.”

SSCC TONGA MISSION: The SSCC Tonga Mission house is underway. We have hired KCL construction who have come in at a reasonable price and progress has begun.

Francis Subal continues with his work with the poor and recently received a donation to the project from the West Coast Delegation of $75,000. (they had previously sent US$25,000.). We are deeply grateful for their support. Martin O’Loghlen hopes to visit the mission and see the project in the near future.

Paul continues in the school as does Clyde in the parish.

MEETING WITH THE BISHOP: On Monday, April 27, 2015, Provincial Johnathan Hurrell and Vicar Provincial, Stan Kolasa traveled to the Chancery of the Diocese of Fall River to meet with Most Reverend Edgar da Cunha, S.V.D., D.D., in their first official visit since Bishop da Cunha was appointed as the eighth Bishop of Fall River on July 3, 2014. They were most warmly received as they spent time enlightening the Bishop about the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts—United States Province and our many years of service to the Diocese of Fall River.

A MEETING WITH MOST REVEREND EDGAR DA CUNHA, S.V.D., D.D.

The bake sale for India was held on the campus of Saint Patrick

School on April 23. I t was an outstanding success in which the

students, parents, family and faculty and staff participated by

baking scrumptious desserts or opened their wallets to help a

school in India. In less than two hours over $1200 was raised.

The bake sale included an assortment of treats from cookies to

cupcakes. For those children who did not have money for the sale,

our Principal Sister Anne Clare treated them with an ice pop. With a

huge turnout as well as being able to teach our students the

importance of helping those who are less fortunate than us, our

school will be sure to include another bake sale for our future Hand

in Hand Mission Projects. What an amazing group effort to help

other students across the world.
