Awards for 2015 The 2015 awards criteria and the names of recipients of 2015 awards in the areas of Academia, Cultural, Service and Sport have been emailed to all students for checking. Students have been asked to email the relevant person about any concerns. This should have been done by now prior to preparations for certificates, medallions and trophies, being made. All students who are to receive a Subject Award or a Gold Award or above, will be required to attend Presentation Evening in order to receive his/her award. Silver Awards will be distributed on assemblies and Bronze Awards will be awarded via the SDP teacher in an SDP lesson. Our school grounds and facilities How great are our school grounds looking at the moment? How great are the facilities we have? Our support and facilities staff work tirelessly to improve the overall look of our school. When you are choosing a school to send your children, the overall presentation or ‘look’ of the school is paramount. Of course, it is ultimately about the quality of teaching and learning that will make the difference to student outcomes, but it helps when we all work together to ensure our school environment and grounds are looking great. Well done to all staff at Mansfield State High School for making this happen. P&C Meeting A reminder that the next P&C Meeting is on Thursday 17 September at 7pm in F Block. Business Week

By Olivia Beard and Megan McLean – Year 11 BCTstudents

This year the Year 11 Business Communication andTechnologies (BCT) and Business Studies students hosted thefirst ever Business Week Expo. The event was held to promotethe Business Education Department to the junior students andto increase student awareness and subject participation in2016. Business Week was held from Monday 10 August toFriday 14 August and included a launch, activity days and afinale which included an auction, at which all the students coulduse their Mansfield currency (earned from participating in theBusiness Week activities). For the launch, a sausage sizzlewas held to help raise money to fund the finale auction whereexciting prizes could be won – including an iPad mini! GrooveCentral and Senior Combo music students contributed to thelaunch vibe.

This Expo was a great opportunity for the younger students tointeract with the senior students of our school. During the weeka variety of activities was on offer for the students to participatein. These activities included: Be the Witness, Who am I?, LogoGame, Scavenger Hunt and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Theparticipants of these games were required to answer questionsto quizzes and much, much more!

Business Week was a fantastic opportunity for the Year 11BCT students to gain experience in hosting and conductingan event. The Year 11 Business Studies students ran theInformation Booth and managed the issuing of Business WeekPassports and Mansfield Bank operations. The senior studentswere also able to develop essential business related skills thatcan be utilised in their future endeavours. Team work was amajor part of business week, whether it was the BCT studentsworking in teams to conduct the activities, the Business Studiesstudents being the customer service representatives at theinformation centre or the participants working in groups tocomplete the activities.

Overall, the Business Week Expo was an amazing experiencefor everyone involved due to its lasting effect on the schoolcommunity. The BCT students are hopeful that this will becomean annual event here at Mansfield.

Learning and Performance

Whether it’s reading or writing, speaking or listening, literacy isa direct pathway to the most amazing world – your imagination.

International Literacy Day is an annual event which paysrespect to this cornerstone of human intelligence. Literacy isa basic human right, and at our school we know that it isa fundamental building block for learning and personalempowerment.

Literacy is the catalyst for student personal growth, caringrelationships and ultimately social and global progress.

On Monday 8 September, Mansfield High’s Resource Centrecelebrated with ‘on the spot rewards’ to show our schoolcommunity the value we place on developing every student’sliteracy skills. Resource Centre extraordinaire Mrs JenepherBowler organised exciting new stationery and writing prizes tobe distributed on the spot to each and every student and staffmember who our team caught reading at lunchtime.

Whilst there were more than 30 readers caught out enjoyingreading in the cool and quiet environment of the ResourceCentre Reading Room, our team travelled around the schooland caught out over 100 avid readers enjoying their lunch witha great book.

Mansfield High School wants everyone to enjoy their reading.International Literacy Day Celebrations are more proof ofQuality Education in a Caring Environment.

Anxiety

“A feeling of worry, nervousness, or uneaseabout something with an uncertain outcome.”

With a definition like this who doesn’t get anxious.

Did you know….

Sometimes it can be helpful to have some level of anxiety. Ithelps us get ready for exams, and motivates us to perform. Ithelps us avoid dangerous situations or reminds us to preparefor new situations. It helps us to be prepared and often to doour best.

If you are feeling anxiety you might feel uncomfortable, physically unwell (butterflies in your stomach, heart racing, wanting to vomit or go to the toilet). You might feeloverwhelmed, frightened or even a sense of panic (this can bevery useful if that assignment is due tomorrow).

All these feelings are normal and most of us experience them atsome time in our lives. Don’t panic if your child is demonstratingthese symptoms especially at the end of term, while having tospeak in public or when awaiting their report card.

When does anxiety go beyond the norm??

If you are seeing anxiety that is “excessive or unreasonable, marked and persistent and interfering significantly with one’snormal routine”, then it is time to consider whether the anxietyhas reached the level of a disorder.

When feelings and thoughts become more intense andoverwhelming, thoughts are unhelpful or irrational and unableto be controlled and the person is unable to do what theyneed to do and these thoughts and feelings are interfering withrelationships, then anxiety becomes a disorder, and it is time toseek help.

Anxiety is a part of life but it should not become your life. There are many causes to anxiety of which familial history ofanxiety is often a common element, but anxiety can occur forlots of reasons. One in six people experiences anxiety, so it is acommon issue.

There are different types of anxiety disorders:

• the Building Fund ($100) and

• the Library Fund ($50).

• Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – excessiveworrying about many aspects of one’s life

• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – thoughtsand fears are obsessive and rituals are performed inorder to cope eg. continually checking if the iron isoff, excessive hand washing

• Panic Disorder – panic attacks are periods of intensefear or anxiety even when there is no good reason.

6

If you believe that the feelings of anxiety are ongoing, and areaffecting day to day living, and are unable to be controlled, thenyou or your loved one needs to seek help.

Tips to help along the way:

Who better to look after you than yourself, but be open to helpif you need it. Often others see our needs before we do!

Why not start your Christmas shopping early this year bypurchasing some soap from the Rauchle Service Club SoapDrive! This annual fundraiser is our final one for the year. Thenatural handmade soaps from The Speciality Soap Shoppeare made with the best quality ingredients and contain nophosphates, no sodium lauryl sulphates, no parabens, no petrochemicals and they come individually wrapped. There are lotsof new varieties to appeal to people of all ages and tastes;there’s even one for the dog. Why not take the order formto work with you - EVERYONE needs soap. All orders andpayments are to be returned to the UPPER OFFICE or to MrsHolley in Upper Admin.

Good neighboursOur neighbours at the Broadwater Road Uniting Church verykindly allow us to use their grounds as a drop off/pick up pointin the mornings and the afternoons. They have even gone sofar as to mark up the driveway and erect traffic signs to makeit a safer place for our students. They also allocate a certainnumber of car parks to our staff members to help alleviate theparking problem the school faces, thus making the area saferfor our whole community.

These facilities are provided at no cost to the school. It is theirprivate property.

Occasionally, when there is a funeral happening at the Church, they will let us know that the car parks and the drop off zoneare not available to us. We make every effort to share thisinformation with your students so that you can make otherarrangements for that day. The Church volunteers are on sitedirecting traffic for these events. Please respect their wishesand do not enter the Church grounds.

We recently had an unpleasant incident when a volunteer wasverbally abused by a parent trying to enter the grounds (theirPRIVATE PROPERTY) while a funeral was in progress.

We are fortunate to have such good neighbours. Let’s returnthe favour.
