YEARS 7 – 9 PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT MEETINGS – October 9 & 10Details of online booking are on page 2 of this newsletter. It is a good opportunity to assess what needs to be done for students who are on track, and what needs to be done to bring others back on track. Let’s keep the family/school partnership alive and active.

INSTAGRAM – NOT SO HARMLESS!(For the full article go to Parentingideas Magazine Issue 9 - www.parentingideas.com.au/Parents/Parenting-Magazine)

Instagram is a photo sharing app that makes photos fun. It is a social networking phenomenon that is taking the tween population by storm. At first it seems a relatively harmless way of sharing photos with each other via a smartphone. Users can upload a photo from their smartphone photo album or take a photo right then and there and use Instagram to change the way the photo looks. However, Instagram is quickly taking over the social networking circuits and creating havoc within and between social groups.

Instagram may be used as a photo-sharing social network on its own, but users also have the option to upload the photo to a number of other social media sites simultaneously, including Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr and Foursquare – depending on which one(s) users syncs their settings with.

PRIVACYThe most important thing for users and parents to be aware of is that Instagram defaults to a public setting. However, a child with a private setting that claims to have 222 followers means they have accepted 222 people to follow them, and not many children can say they genuinely socialise face-to-face with that many kids.

In many cases young children use their real first and last names to create their accounts. To make matters worse, the sign-up process has an optional phone number section where users can submit their phone number as part of their public profile.

GEOTAGGINGOnce a photo has been taken and is ready to share, the option of ‘geotagging’ – including details of the location of the photo – comes up. This option has to be checked, however, as with most touch screen devices, errors can easily occur and a photo can be inadvertently geotagged. Geotagging is a great way to showcase where a photo was taken, but it can also alert others to where the photographer has been, if not where they might be at that moment.

At this time, it is not possible to sign up for an Instagram account on their website – it must be done by downloading the app to a smartphone. The app may be on your child’s mobile device without you even knowing about it.

BLOCKING AND REPORTING USERS AND CONTENT Although it seems innocent enough, there are users out there who will post inappropriate pictures. People will and do upload nude photos, drug use, and other inappropriate content. Social networking sites such as Instagram provide tools to block or report content and users and it would be a good idea to learn how to use them.

FROM THE SENIOR SCHOOLMrs Vera Treloar – Deputy Principal, Head of Campus

PARENT/STUDENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS I was pleased to meet many parents at the recent Year 10-12 Parent/Student/Teacher interviews. Students have the most chance of success when families and schools work together in order to support the student to achieve their learning goals. I hope that all students take on board the strategies suggested by teachers in order to improve their academic performance. At St Francis Xavier College promotion to the next year level is not automatic. Students must earn this privilege by successfully completing their course of study. The next round of interviews for current Year 11 students is scheduled for October 30 and October 31. All students hoping to begin Year 12 in 2014 are expected to attend with their parents. Bookings will be made using the online booking PTS system beginning on October 15. Further login details will be provided closer to the date.

COLLEGE CAPTAINS FOR 2014 Student Leadership is valued at St Francis Xavier College. I am pleased to congratulate our College Captains for 2014, Jessica Matheson and Joshua Mettes and our Vice Captains, Courtney Graf and Peter Halat. These four capable students will lead the student body with confidence and skill. I thank all the other nominees and wish them all the best as they seek alternate leadership positions for 2014. We are very fortunate to have such a high calibre group keen to serve our community.

TRIAL EXAMSAll students studying a Unit 3/4 sequence are reminded that the forthcoming trial exams are compulsory. Students are expected to arrive promptly, in full Winter uniform. All regular St Francis Xavier College regulations in terms of grooming and behaviour apply. Students who fail to attend during this trial examination period may be ineligible to participate in celebratory events during Term 4. All students have been supplied with a copy of the examination timetable. These are also available on Moodle. I encourage each and every student to revise effectively as subject teachers will be using these results to formulate indicative grades for the final VCAA examinations.

RESPECT FOR OUR COLLEGE ENVIRONMENTAll students are reminded that they have a responsibility to treat our College environment with respect. Damage to property impacts upon others and is extremely disappointing. Students will be asked to meet the cost of damage to College property. Permanent markers and chewing gum are not allowed. It is important that we respect our environment and do our best to maintain the buildings and grounds so that we call all be proud of our learning venue.

“Trivial Maths!” Challenge – Mathematical Methods Units 3, 4On Wednesday August 21, five St Francis Xavier College Maths Methods 3, 4 students joined other Year 12 students from local Colleges to experience the magic of “Trivial Maths” at St Margaret’s School, Berwick. The students were accompanied by Mr Joe Marsiglio and Mrs Bernadette Barlow.

This event has become an annual highlight of the Mathematical year during Year 12, and is the result of creative teamwork by a group of local Maths Methods teachers.

Students worked in teams comprising members from each College. The emphasis was on working accurately under time constraints while communicating and sharing ideas.

The session consisted of three rounds of 25 questions, one round to be done without a calculator (to replicate exam conditions at the end of the year). The quiz spanned the entire year’s curriculum, providing students with invaluable practice for the end-of-year exams.

Jack Batson, Dylan Brand, Michael Beards, Dillon Grech and Ryan Mortimer represented our College with mathematical flair and are to be commended on their enthusiasm and effort!

VCAA EXAMINATIONS COUNT DOWNAs we come to the end of Term 3, students enrolled in VCE unit 3/4 subjects are finalising the notes that form the basis of the preparation for the TRIAL EXAMINATIONS.

Strategies for effectively working through past VCE Examination Papers and Examiners REPORTS have been shared with the students in all classes and in a number of ways. MOODLE offers a ‘treasure chest’ of opportunities for enhancing their knowledge of the subject content and developing the very specific skills required to be a successful examinee.

VCAA has published the 2013 NAVIGATOR which details all information needed by students:

• Examination Timetables

• Examination Rules

• Approved Materials and Equipment

• Special Provision

Students received their personal copy through Care Group last week.

Parents, please note:Year 12 / Year 11 Students about to complete VCAA exams are reminded that the College is running COMPULSORY TRIAL EXAMINATIONS in the second week of the holidays (Sept 30-Oct 4). Teachers have the responsibility to provided an INDICATIVE GRADE to VCAA early in Term 4 and use information from this practice exam as part of their decision making process.

9.9.1 Indicative grades and the anomalous grades check (VCE Administrative Handbook 2013)Indicative grades for all performance and written examinations are to be submitted prior to the October–November examination period. The primary purpose of these indicative grades is their use in the quality assurance procedures for marking the examinations ... The indicative grade is the prediction of a student’s actual level of achievement on the examination.

Any student who is unable to be present will be required to produce a medical certificate or have an ‘approved absence’. Please call the VCE office if there are any questions or concerns about this expectation.

AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS BIG CAKE BAKE FUNDRAISER

On Thursday August 29 St Francis Xavier College supported the good work of the Australian Red Cross by running the

BIG CAKE BAKE morning tea for students

The Year 11 Food & Technology students planned and created lovely baked goods and sold them for morning tea.

Thank you to everyone involved who donated their time, energy, skill and money.

We surpassed our goal of raising $250 – our total collected was $321.30. This money will go towards helping those in need, including some of the most vulnerable people in

Australia and further afield. A great community effort!

HANDS ON LEARNINGOver the coming weeks 23 students will be given the opportunity to join Hands On Learning as part of the Sampler Program, which operates during Outward Bound. These students from Years 7 and 8, will experience what Hands On Learning is all about, and engage in a number of activities that will allow the students to further foster relationships, develop team building skills and enhance their self-esteem. These students will be working on several projects including the Sensory Garden which is nearing completion. We wish all these students well during their two week ‘sampler’.

OUTWARD BOUNDOur Year 9s are in their final days of classes for Term 3 as they prepare for their Outward Bound expedition, which commences on Tuesday September 10. Outward Bound will challenge our students and take them out of their comfort zone in many ways. The students will experience a different environment without the comforts of home, and with other students they are yet to develop strong relationships with. Outward Bound promises to be a wonderful experience of self-discovery and we wish them safe travels throughout their experience. A reminder that it is classes as normal on Monday September 9 and after their return on Wednesday September 18, there are no Year 9 classes for the remainder of the Term.

GO AHEAD. REACH OUT!The power of the Post It note cannot be underestimated. Not only can they be used to write reminders about your shopping, a note about where you are for family members or as page tabs, they can also be used to remind people that you care for them. A Post It note in your child’s lunch box, diary or laptop can be a powerful reminder to them how much you care. We can never tell people how much we love them, respect or appreciate them enough. Even your child’s teachers could use a reminder from time to time. For further ideas consider viewing the following advertisement on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7V6uzU01Lg&feature=youtube_gdata

Finally, a massive thank you to all who have supported the College over the past few difficult weeks.

DIRECTOR OF LEARNING – BERWICK CAMPUSMr Adam Gordon

PARENT / TEACHER / STUDENT INTERVIEWSP/T/S interviews will be held during the first week of Term 4. Information regarding how to book interview times will be sent home with Interim Reports. Please note that interviews are far more beneficial if the student is present. Interviews are an excellent opportunity to collectively address what can be done to improve student learning and parental support is vital to this process.

LITERACY Recent data reveals falling literacy rates amongst many young Australians, especially in reading comprehension. It is vital for all students to read on a daily basis and discuss their understandings with those around them. Students can improve their vocabulary by keeping a glossary of words relevant to each of their subjects and to experiment by using these words wherever possible.

Students should ask themselves the following questions:

- What different types of reading do I do? For example, do I only read school textbooks or do I also read widely for fun? Do I read longer texts, not just short snippets of information?

- How well do I understand what I read? Can I find information easily? Can I identify key ideas from what I am reading?

- Do I value reading as essential to my learning and look for new ways to improve my reading ability?- Do I discuss my reading with my teachers, friends and parents?

These questions are an excellent starting point for conversations about how to improve key literacy skills that ultimately determine academic success.

FROM THE OFFICER CAMPUSMrs Margaret Blythman – Deputy Principal, Head of Campus

A SWEDISH APPROACH TO TEACHING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE The Year 7 students are about to finish Term 3 and with that they complete another term of ‘The Four Rooms of Change’. The students have learned some valuable life lessons from this exciting new program and it would be beneficial for you to ask your son/ daughter about the program. Emotional intelligence and an understanding of how others, including themselves are feeling, have been the main messages in ‘The Four Rooms of Change’. One of the benefits of this program, evident in countries that have been running this program for a number of years is the huge reduction in bullying.

The program, based on a Swedish psychological theory, is gaining ground in Australian schools as a way to improve behaviour among students. Early data from a Swinburne University study shows students reported

improvements in their ability to understand and analyse the emotions of their peers, suggesting greater empathy. It centres on emotional intelligence, empathy and understanding the emotions of others. In short it gets them to stop and think about the other person before they do anything thoughtless or nasty.

The theory involves dividing emotions into four categories, or ‘rooms’, with names such as contentment, denial, conflict and inspiration. A whiteboard is carried to each class and as their emotions change students move personalised magnets between the categories. The students are free to then discuss how and why their emotional state has changed.

A MESSAGE FROM FIRST AID

Students have been reminded that if they are feeling unwell they must first come to Reception. They are not to phone or SMS their parent or guardian. It is a breach of College rules to use their mobile phone at the College and doing so will incur a detention.

THE MELBOURNE WRITERS FESTIVALOn Wednesday August 29 a group of students participated in the English as an Additional Language workshop offered by the Melbourne Writers Festival. This program was designed to celebrate cultural diversity through writing and storytelling and provided a perfect opportunity to help students to build their confidence in writing. Student Meti Defersha writes “The students got to listen to people tell their stories. The first story was about a woman in Indonesia and how she had to hunt for her own food in the jungle. The second storyteller talked about a lost dog and how they found his owner. The third storyteller described how a boy saved another person and was then awarded a Courage Award.”

ICAS (INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS AND ASSESSMENTS – UNIVERSITY OF NSW)Last Term, the following students sat for the International School Science Competition.

Year 7: Emily Baker, James Bird, Harris Cormack, Riley Dineen, Madeleine Jans, Luke Molino, Brook O’Brien and William Phillips.

Year 8: Thomas Bellink, Jordan Cammarano, Antonio Gigliotti, Emma Jane Graham, Charles Hutcheson, Alfred Sempel and Shane Tohooloo.

The results have recently come in, and we can proudly acknowledge exceptional performances from Harris Cormack, Luke Molino and Charles Hutcheson, who received Distinctions in their relative year levels, while William Phillips received a High Distinction, placing him in the top 1% of all participants. We thank all of the above students for taking the time and effort to sit for this competition.

SCIENCE WEEKDuring the last week of August, Mrs Gardiner organised activities to help us celebrate Science Week. The following students were ‘first’ to solve the Conundrums published in the Daily Bulletin:Monday: Anneke Vos Butler (White House)Tuesday: Sarah Doensen and Michael Rossetti, (Synan House)Wednesday: Antonio Gigliotti (Gallagher House)Thursday: Madisson Everitt (McDonagh House)

On Friday – the Ball Bearing ‘Launcher’ challenge was held at lunch time. First position: Synan House (Sarah Doensen and Michael Rossetti)Second position: White House (Brandon Croxson, Nathan Chadwick and Lachlan Muntz)Third position: Gallagher House: (Antonio Gigliotti, Jacob Charabie, Bradley Ventura and Nicholas Charabie)Well done for an exciting and fun event! The Staff Quiz was won by Mr Clinton Broadhurst (followed by a very close second by Mr Wes Branchflower).

TOURNAMENT OF MINDSTournament of minds is a problem solving competition where students work together in a team of seven with a mix of students from at least two year levels (up to and including Year Ten). Teams are required to work together on a Long Term Challenge for six weeks without assistance from teachers, parents or peers. The teams must also participate in an unseen Spontaneous Challenge on the Tournament Day. This challenge requires rapid sharing of ideas and well developed group co-operation skills.

This year Officer Campus entered one team in the Language Literature division. The Team members were Jacob Charabie (Yr 8), Riley Dineen (Yr 7), Sarah Doensen (Yr 8), Kosta Georgiou (Yr 7), Tylah Meunier (Yr 8), Shannon Naujoks (Yr 8) and Brooke O’Brien (Yr 7). There can only be one winner in each division and although this team did not finish in first place, they gained valuable skills in problem solving techniques, risk taking, co-operative learning and team work, and appreciation of self and others. All members of the team conducted themselves admirably throughout the competition and should be congratulated for their efforts.

Thank you to Mrs Nadia Abdelal for her time and commitment as Facilitator for the St Francis Xavier Teams and Ms Gabrielle Capozzi, Mrs Carmel Gardiner and Mr Glenn McGowan for their support of the Officer team.

Year 12 Health and Human Development

Written by Patti Kurasik (Year 12 Health and Human Development student)

As Australians, we are very lucky to have resources and services that assist women during childbirth. We often take opportunities like this for granted, where as in developing countries such as Kenya and Ethiopia, women continuously struggle day after day when dealing with childbirth.

In order to help women in developing countries, the Year 12 Health and Human Development classes will be assembling birthing kits, provided by The Birthing Kit Foundation Australia.

Over 135,000 women die every year due to complications during childbirth, 99% of the deaths occur in developing countries. With extremely high maternal mortality rates, something needs to be done.

The Birthing Kit Foundation Australia has three main goals:

1. To make and distribute birthing kits to women in remote and rural regions of developing countries, targeting predominantly home birth, where the only assistance may be from a Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) or with no assistance at all.

2. To establish funded health training programmes for health workers and traditional birth attendants, in consultation with local stake holders and health authorities in the course design and content.

3. To encourage sustainability through in-country kit production and funding of training programmes.

Our aim is to help The Birthing Kit Foundation Australia achieve their goals donating the birthing kits to the women in developing countries, who may not have complete access to health care or reproductive services, and ultimately result in improved maternal health across developing countries. The kits are basic with 6 items; a plastic sheet; soap; 2 gloves; sterile scalpel blade; 3 cords and 5 gauze squares. These items play a critical role in enhancing the life of a mother and her newborn.

Our classes have worked hard and raised enough money throughout the year to be able to make 600 birthing kits through the selling of soft drinks at school events and receiving donations from family, friends and workplaces.

Assembly Day is on September 13, and is guaranteed to be a rewarding and fun experience for everyone. We’re inviting parents of our Year 12 Health and Human Development students to join our classes in making these kits, to help those in need of our support and goodwill.

Congratulations to the following girls: Khloe Weaver, Maddy Vance, Tessa Woodward, Natasha Lubin, Alex Stevens, Aliesha Hill, Georgia Venn, Bianca Lombadi, Annie Hughes, Mary Davine and Yasmin Dickson. All girls were exceptional throughout the day, working well as a team. There is some real talent amongst these young players. I was very impressed with the maturity displayed especially in relation to the court time given. It’s a very intense day, with only the top team on the ladder making it through. Unfortunately we just missed out on our last game, however the girls should be immensely proud of the way they trained, played and demonstrated sportsmanship throughout the competition. Thank you to all of the parents that came along to support, it was lovely having you there.

Junior Boys: Coached by Miss Christina SchianoThe junior boys played five games at the Victorian Netball Championships on Tuesday August 20. With two wins and three loses, it wasn’t enough to progress to the next stage. What was evident was weeks of early morning training paying off. The boys showed a deep commitment to the team and determination to strive toward the finals. On the court the boys showed they had mastered the techniques and clever footwork to outsmart the opposition. Over the course of a very cold and windy day, with most of our games outside, the boys represented the College with the highest regard and showed genuine respect for the other schools and players. Congratulations to the following boys: Lachlan Benson, Ryan Wijaya, Riley Gardiner, Matthew Jacob, David Huezo, Joel Keating, Shane Tohooloo, Patrick McKee, Connor Warren, Michael Rossetti and Adam Craig.

A big thank you must go to all the coaches who gave up their time for many early morning trainings and shared their netball knowledge with the students on the day.

BERWICK HOUSE DANCEOn Wednesday August 21, the Berwick Campus held a House Dance competition during lunch. All houses worked hard to choreograph a dance that would be enjoyable, fit the criteria and impress the judges. The costumes from each house were creative and everyone that was involved did a great job. It was very hard to choose a winner with so many houses producing a wonderful performance. The results are below:

1st McKenna 83/90 2nd Synan 81/90 Equal 3rd Burgess 79/90 Equal 3rd Thomas 79/90 5th Gallagher 75/90 6th White 78/90 7th Schneider 72/90 8th McDonagh 69/90

A special mention must go to our Judges, Miss Stanley, Mr O’Meara and Miss Collins.
