May 2018 From the Pastor’s Pen First Baptist Church, 200 East New York Avenue, Southern Pines, North Carolina 28387 Greetings, First Baptist Church Family! By the time you read this note, Polly and I should already be relocated to North Carolina. We are thrilled to be part of your church family; that is exactly how you have made us feel, even before we have arrived! We are excited to begin ministry at FBC and in the Southern Pines community. The beginning of our life together has been marked by countless acts of love and kindness from the members of the Search Committee and the staff. (We also got a taste of the warmth of FBC folks on a recent Wednesday night when we were on a house-hunting adventure. In case you do not know, God has blessed that adventure with a wonderful new home for us!) I would like to thank Pastor David and John Kinney for all their time and help along the way. Each member of the Committee represented the church with the fullness of its love and Christian character, and the hospitality extended us by them and the staff filled us with warmth. I would also like to thank Tom, Bryan, Susan, John, Lisa, Debbie, and Kathy for all their help during the transition. We are grateful for the opportunity to worship and minister with you and alongside you. I am excited to begin working with the music ministry and to work with the Senior Adult Ministry. We will see you soon! Blessings, Greg and Polly Lundberg I am grateful to the church for the wonderful ways you have reached out to Greg and Polly Lundberg as they begin this new venture of ministry with us. In the coming days and weeks, I hope you will drop by the church to introduce yourself to Greg. I am excited to see what God will do through them to advance the mission of Christ here at First Baptist! The first Sunday of May, we honor our children as they lead us in worship. That Sunday, I plan to preach a sermon on marriage, outlining some essential practices of building a stronger marriage. Of course, these same practices are applicable to all relationships. I hope you’ll be here to support our children and learn how to strengthen your relationships. In the month of June, I am taking a sabbatical leave for a month. I plan to rest some, play some, and read some. For two weeks of that time, I will travel to Israel to participate in an archaeological dig in the Jezreel Valley. I will join a team from Campbell University Divinity School. The dig began in 2013 in affiliation with the American Schools of Oriental Research and is a joint project of the Zinman Institute of Archaeology at the University of Haifa, Israel, and the University of Evansville (Indiana). A view of the Jezreel Valley from Mt. Carmel We will live in an Israeli kibbutz, a community of about 500 people. The work will be strenuous in the intense heat of the Israeli summer. A typical day will begin at 5:00 a.m. and end around 1:00 p.m. in order to avoid the most severe heat of the day. At that time, we will clean up, have lunch, and relax before returning to the site to label any of the findings of the day. After we finish up, we will return to our kibbutz for a light supper and then retire for the night. I look forward to being in Israel for an extended time. I hope to correspond week- ly about my trip. It should be an adventure. This will truly be a bucket list trip for me!

Greetings, First Baptist Church Family!

Narrative Report on Financial Position / FBCSP

March, 2018 vs March, 2017

Prepared by John R. Beith, CCA, CCBA, Church Treasurer Weekly giving averaged $30,451 for the first quarter of 2018 (11 weeks) compared with $28,686 for the first quarter of 2017 (12 weeks) — both years had a Sunday canceled due to inclement weather in January. Through the end of March, pledged offerings received were 22.89% of the amount committed for 2018, 2.11% less than the 25% projected, while non-pledged offerings were 28.11% of the total, over 3% more than our projection for the first quarter.

The church’s operating cash flow increased $53,323 in the first quarter of 2018, receipts exceeding expenses by the same amount for the year. Our giving goal through March, 2018 was approximately $20,728 more than projected. By comparison, cash flow in the first quarter of 2017 increased $35,467 with receipts exceeding expenses by an equal amount. Our giving goal through March, 2017 was approximately $22,023 more than projected.

The age of accounts payable remained consistent at approxi-mately four (4) to five (5) days. Debt as a percentage of total receipts for the first quarter was 8.51% which continues to fall within acceptable parameters. The mortgage balance on March 31, 2018 was $288,059 compared with $398,713 on March 31, 2017 ($110,654 less).

The balance in the Capital Improvement Fund on March 31, 2018 was $96,200 after the Finance Committee recommended the transfer of $94,000 from the previous year’s surplus which was approved by the congregation in business session on Wednesday, February 21.

The Annie Armstrong Easter and CBF Global Missions Easter Offerings goal for 2018 was $6,500. Through the end of March, 2018 we received $7,746 exceeding this year’s goal by $1,246.

Our General Endowment Fund increased $25,775 in portfolio value from March 31, 2017 to February 28, 2018 (March, 2018 statements were unavailable at the time of this report). The balance through February 28, 2018 was $260,766. Also, the Jeannie H. Jordan Memorial Endowment for the benefit of Sonshine Learning Center had a balance of $62,010 on the same date. Your Enduring Gifts Committee meets twice a year to monitor these two endowments. Please contact me if you would like more information on how you can leave a legacy gift to The First Baptist Church of Southern Pines.

NOTES

for SENIORS & SINGERS

Senior Adult Ministry

Contributed by Roger and Carol Wilson

Greetings Senior Adults!

On April 9, the Seniors on the Move, “Rolling Retirees” enjoyed a wonderful evening of music with soloist, Suzie Wall. Suzie’s husband, Al, joined her, and we had an oppor-tunity to fellowship with them at dinner as well. They are members of the First Baptist Church of Pinehurst. Suzie also shared her testimony and blessed us with it and her God-given talent of singing His praises. The evening came to a close with her leading us in the sacred song, “Amazing Grace.”

Joint Ministry Night! On Thursday, April 12, thirty-one Senior Adults and thirty-two Youth—a total of sixty-three!—gathered in the Youth Room and enjoyed an evening that began with a pizza dinner and continued with a fantastic time playing Bingo and getting to know each other, and there were even prizes for the Bingo game winners! A big thank you to Bryan for putting the evening together and for being our Bingo caller and MC! We look forward to other opportunities to join with the Youth at First Baptist!

Our annual Senior Adult Sunday was on Sunday, April 15. Lynn Beith led the Senior Singers in a wonderful morning of music in both services. Jim Langford gave the sermon, entitled “Two Lost Sons.” Our heartfelt thanks to Lynn for her leadership with Senior Singers and to Jim for his message. It’s always a blessing to worship together, as our Senior Adults lead in these annual services.

WOW (Widows and Widowers) enjoyed their time together on Thursday, April 26, as they traveled to Candor for lunch at Blake’s Restaurant and then on to Troy for a visit to The Front Porch Pickin’ Emporium. What a great afternoon together!

A warm welcome to Greg and Polly Lundberg whose first Sunday was on our fifth Sunday, April 29. After one church-wide worship service, a luncheon and reception gave everyone an opportunity to welcome them and introduce ourselves to them. We can’t wait to see how God will continue to use Greg as he begins this new ministry journey as Minister of Music & Senior Adults here at First Baptist Church Southern Pines!

The Annual Senior Adult Banquet is on Monday, May 7, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. The deadline has now passed for reservations and payment. We will meet in the lower lot at 5:00 p.m. and will arrive prior to dinner. Transportation will be provided. The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. for dinner, fellowship, and entertainment. We’re looking forward to gathering together as Senior Adults.

We will gather in the Fellowship Hall for Seniors on the Move, “Rolling Retirees” on Monday, May 14, at 5:00 p.m. Group 4 is in charge of set up/clean up. Margaret Thompson, Chair; Sonny Thompson, Anne and Harvey Albright, Glenn Flinchum, Karen and George Griffin, Donna Haggard, Becky and Paul Jett, Charlotte Patnode, Diane and Dean Robinson, and Betty Rush. Please bring a covered dish, side dish, or dessert to share. Remember, someone will be at the old portico door on the lower level to assist you with your covered dish. Just pull under the portico, and then you may park your vehicle.

WOW (Widows and Widowers) will travel to Siler City, North Carolina, for lunch (Dutch treat!) at the Bestfood Cafe-teria on Thursday, May 24. A sign-up sheet is on the Senior Adult Ministry Activity bulletin board. Transportation will be provided. We’ll gather in the lower parking lot at 10:30 a.m., and we’ll leave at 10:45 a.m.

The Senior Adult Summer Fest I – North Carolina Baptist Assembly at the Fort Caswell Costal Retreat and Conference Center will be Monday, May 28, to Friday, June 1. Reser-vations have been made for eighteen Senior Adults to attend this wonderful annual event. Ten Senior Adults have signed up so far. Please see Roger Wilson for details regarding the payment that is due by May 20.

See you in September for our Senior Adult Ministry Kickoff, as we begin a new year of wonderful opportunities, fellowship, and ministry. Be looking for more details in the bulletin and on the bulletin board as fall approaches.

Music Ministry

Nine months. Nine months! Has it really been nine months since we began Children’s Choirs? It doesn’t seem possible, but somehow those months have flown by, and now it’s time to have our big crescendo for the year! Sunday, May 6, will be a BIG day around here. Not only is it Children’s Day of Worship, but that evening at 5:00 p.m. will be our final gathering time for our Graded Choirs this year. Our four choirs—Mini-Music-Makers, Music Makers, Young Musicians, and TreBELLS—will bring you beautiful singing and ringing. Please invite your friends and relatives to join us. You never know—you might just learn something, too.

Following our program, we will have a sandwich supper with all the fixins. We would love for you to bring one of your favorite desserts with you as well. This is always the highlight of our year and will present you with another opportunity to personally greet Dr. Greg Lundberg, our new Minister of Music. Make your plans now to be with us! NOTES OF GRAT TUDE Dear Church Family, Your cards, phone calls, and words of condolence follow-ing the loss of our Gigi, Helen Miller Dillon, were comforting and meaningful. We wish you could have known her. As they like to say in Texas, “She was a hoot and a half!” While we will miss her, we have a lifetime of happy memories with her from which to draw. Knowing that her mind is no longer dimmed by dementia also brings a measure of comfort. Again, many thanks. Much love, Cindy, Maeghan, and Miller Edwards

• Mini-Music Makers — Katie Roscoe, Director; John Roscoe, Jamie Burmeister, Jack Robinson, Assistants • Music Makers — Luke and Alison Arno, Co-Directors; Ann Cockman, Julia Presson, Assistants • Young Musicians — Susan Ward, Director; Myra Robinson, Accompanist; Lisa Carriker, Gretchen Stroud, Assistants • TreBELLs — Susan Ward, Director; Ann Cockman, Julia Presson, Assistants; Cyerra Masters, Ricky Turnpaugh, Student Assistants

We could NEVER do what we do without our leaders. We love each of you so very, very much.

A quick look ahead . . . Sunday, June 3, is Graduation Sunday. Both One Voice and JuBELLation will be participating in both services that day. This is always a highlight of our year and serves as a precursor for our Mission Trip to Orlando. Make plans to join us that day as we honor and celebrate our youth.
