“Building More Than a House”

Work has begun on the Habitat for Humanity house our church is sponsoring to

build. Over the last several weeks the walls have been raised, the trusses secured, and the

house is taking shape. The home is scheduled to be completed in June. It is exciting to

see a tangible mission project that is affecting a local Billings family.

The house is being built for Michelle O’Neill and her three young children. I met Michelle last week

as we were working together on her new residence. She is an energetic, vibrant lady who works as a nurse at

a local nursing home. She is so appreciative to our congregation for sponsoring the house and also for sup-

plying volunteer workers at the job site.

The house is located at 538 Newman Lane, on the corner of Newman and Rebecca Place— seven

blocks north of Cabala's on Newman Lane. Your help is needed in several ways. If you are able and capable

of helping build the house, I’d invite you to the jobsite on any Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday from 8:15-

3:30 PM. If you are able to help with a full day for half day, your help would be appreciated. A medical re-

lease waiver needs to be signed prior to volunteering.

A second option to help (for those who are not inclined to swinging a hammer and lifting lumber) is

to provide meals to the workers at the building site. If you can help provide a noon meal on one of the work

days, please let me know and we will get you on the schedule.

I wish to thank a number of people from our church who have helped in the beginning stages of this

project. I think we have all come to realize that we are building more than a house, but a better life for

Michelle and her children. As we hammer nails and saw boards, we are building a

relationship with a local family that will enable them to have affordable housing in

our wonderful community.

I invite you to get involved and help with this special mission effort. And as

Jesus said to his disciples in John 13:17, “Now that you know these things, you will

be blessed if you do them.” What a blessing to help others!

SESSION MINUTES

Session Notes: The first stated session meeting of 2014 was on January 14. The finance com-

mittee reported that the financial condition of the church is strong.

The personnel announced that Janie Sutton has been hired as choir director.

Denise Finn will continue to be the director of music and Bev Wornom will still ac-

company the choir. The committee also informed the session that Jeanne Thompson-

Raney, our office manager, was granted permission to work from 8:30 to 4:30 on

Monday through Thursday. The office will be closed on Friday.

Bob Culbertson was present to speak on behalf of Campus Ministry at MSUB-

Billings concerning the need for support for the organization and the upcoming pro-

gram featuring talks by Tony Campolo, a noted pastor, author, and public speaker.

The Church Mice The Church Mice lurk in the corners of the sanctuary on Sunday mornings to share

in the excitement and joy of the church service. On Sunday morning January 19,

2014, Pastor Dave's message was on evangelism, and the name of Lois Dyce is

synonymous with evangelism and every aspect of stewardship in First Presbyterian.

Many people can attest to Lois' participation in welcoming newcomers, bringing

people to church and making sure they were involved in church activities (some of

us especially remember the home-baked loaves of bread she took to visitors in the

church). At one time Lois was both a deacon and on the session. Lois is a well-

respected member of our congregation and our love and prayers are with her on a

daily basis; she still inspires us to do our best

Food Bank Sunday Reminder

Dear Dinners of Eight:

It’s a New Year and spring is just around the corner, so let us get started with a bang. The purpose is all about getting to know

others in the congregation. Make it easy on everyone, whether it’s in the home of an outing, but make it easy.

If you find that you cannot host, give someone on your team to do the hosting. Do not let this time fall through There are

times that you just cannot host an event, but someone else may be happy to do it, give them a chance. The Host(s) (first

name(s) in cell) picks a couple of dates during the subject month that is convenient for you and calls your guests. If you are

short of guests (someone may not be able to come), fill in the spaces with new faces with substitutes listed below or anyone not

involved in dinners of eight (don’t forget new members or older members). Let your guests know when and where to come

and what side dish or beverage to bring if any. (If you do not hear from your host call them, they may have forgotten.)

This is a very flexible program. Any activities to accompany or follow your dinner are up to you. Even the dinner format can

be modified to a brunch or whatever creative ideas you come up with including eating out. Enjoy your dinners!

The annual Presbyterian Women book sale will be held during the month of February near the Fireside Room.

Please bring your used books and put them in the Children’s Library. It will be fun to see what is there to buy. Lots of

good book are priced to sell.

We will have our annual Birthday luncheon on Wednesday, February 5 at noon in the Fellowship hall. All wom-

en are welcome. We pray that everyone has a very Blessed New Year.

The Presbyterian Women will be leading worship on Sunday, March 9 as the annual Gifts of Women Sunday

will be celebrated. A variety of women will be taking part in this special service.

Noisy Offering was received on Sunday, January 12

Thanks to all who gave to the Noisy Offering on Sunday, January 12 for the Gideon Ministry. $500 was re-

ceived for their ministry. The Gideon’s place a number of Bibles in schools, prisons, and hotel rooms. Our Noisy Of-

ferings are received four times a year. Our next Noisy Offering will be received on Easter Sunday, as part of our annual

fishing derby for the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. Start saving your coins for that special offering that help

many people throughout the world.

Chocolate treats to be given away on Sunday, February 16

In celebration of Valentine’s Day the fellowship committee will be giving our complimentary chocolate treats

on Sunday, February 16 after worship. Join us as we show our appreciation to those in our church.

Youth News Greetings from the youth group and Happy New Year! We have a couple things that

we want to highlight that are coming up in the future. First, February 7-9 the youth

group will be headed to Mizpah for our annual winter retreat. It should be a time of excite-

ment, fun, and most of all spiritual renewal. Please pray for safe travels for not only our youth group, but also for the

other Presbytery groups around the state.

Also, coming up on April 6th the youth group will be having our annual basket auction in order to raise funds

for the youth. So start getting your creative juices going on what you might want to contribute, or start getting together

a gift basket.

Thank you for everyone who has continued to support the youth by praying, financial support, and cooking

meals on Wednesday nights. The youth group greatly appreciates everyone and you are such a blessing.

FEBRUARY 2: Doris Backus, Administrator, Autumn Springs Assisted Living. Doris will be speaking about mak-

ing necessary preparations for end of life issues.

FEBRUARY 9: Faten Alharbi, Public Administration Masters graduate at MSUB from Saudi Arabia. Faten will dis-

cuss the history and religions of her country, the present difficulties facing the people and government, and similarities

and differences compared to the U.S.

FEBRUARY 16: Dr. Jenifer Parks, Assistant Professor of History, Rocky Mountain College, "The Olympics in Rus-

sia.” Jenifer will discuss the history of the Olympics in Russia and the social and religious implications of hosting the

Olympics. With a focus on sports and politics in the Soviet Union, Jenifer has been quoted in Sports Illustrated, and

she is preparing a book that follows USSR's Olympic bureaucrats from 1952 until 1980's Summer Games in Moscow.

FEBRUARY 23: Mark Bassingthwaighte, Risk Manager with ALPS, an attorney's professional liability insurance

carrier. Mark’s topic will be "There Be Pirates About.” While traditional pirates do still roam the world’s waters, in

today’s world a new kind of pirate has also surfaced. These new pirates roam the digital waters of the Internet and

they can steal you blind while enjoying a cool beverage from the comfort of their own home. Cybercrime impacts us

all whether we realize it or not and more and more it’s all about social engineering. Not sure what social engineering

is? Then come learn the basics of how one can surf the digital waters of the Internet without having any pirates board

your ship. Mark has completed over 1100 assessment visits and has presented at many seminars on this topic.

MARCH 2: Bob Dayton will talk about his "Travels in Laos, Including Myanmar (Burma) and Vietnam.”

Grief support group continues every month A grief support group within our church continues to meet the first Wednesday of each month from

11-12 noon in the fireside room. This group is open to anyone in the church or community who is experienc-

ing grief. Facilitated by Dr. Don Harr, this group will provide support and help to those facing grief.

We welcome Janie (Rife) Sutton as our new Choir Director We are excited to introduce Janie (Rife) Sutton as our church’s new choir director. Many of you know Janie

from years of singing in our choir and sharing special music on a regular basis during worship. Janie graduated from

Rocky Mountain College last May with a degree in Music Education. She was married last June. Janie is a gifted

singer and flautist. She is looking forward to this new position with our church.

Denise Finn will continue to be the Music Director of our church, providing oversight to the music ministry of

our congregation. Help us in welcoming Janie to this new role with our church.

The Mission Committee is prayerfully looking forward to a New Year of helping God’s children wher-

ever we can.

The Habitat for Humanity house that our church is sponsoring to build has been started. We still need

volunteers to help. Work days are held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8:15 AM– 3:30 PM.

If you can volunteer for a full or partial day, it would be appreciated. Volunteer release forms must be

completed prior to working. To receive a form talk with Pastor Dave.

A special check presentation for Habitat will take place during worship on Sunday, February 23. At that

time we will present our $25,000 major sponsor check to Habitat and have a chance to introduce Michelle O’Neill and her

family who will be receiving the house. Join us on this special Sunday as we help a local family receive affordable hous-

ing.

Here are some ideas of projects we would we are considering in this New Year

1. Continue to develop the Ponderosa Pines relationship involving the congregation in additional ways.

2. Present more “hands-on” ways to be involved in mission and ways that involve a connection with people; don’t

just give money.

3. Consider continuing support of a full-time PC(USA) mission worker and inviting the person to the congregation.

4. Explore education and involvement in Fair Trade.

5. Develop a partnership with Paul Neshangwe and his church in Zimbabwe.

6. Make a yearly commitment to be an “angel” to a church in need as with the Weldon Valley church in Colorado.

7. Make weekly Mission prayer requests known to the church; get “vocal” in worship.

8. Invite George and Kathy Goodrich from Presbytery to come talk to the committee regarding mission in the Pres-

bytery. Help to support George and Kathy financially since Synod support has been decreased.

9. Look for areas that might sustain new church development.

10. Continue to be strong community support especially in ways that others overlook.

We would like to thank Carol Harr for her leadership of the Mission Committee. Carol’s love for God and for His chil-

dren has been an inspiration to us all.

Our church is looking for a representative who would serve on the Family Promise (formerly Interfaith Hospitality Net-

work) Board of Directors. Our church is a host congregation for Family Promise and having a representative on the board

would be appreciated. This board meets monthly. If interested, please talk with Janet Brown.

Mission News

Stephen Ministry Update

We are excited to have begun the training of our newest class of Stephen Ministers. Stephen

Ministers, upon commissioning, are teamed up with a care receiver who in in need of a listening ear and

spiritual friend. Those who are being trained include Robert and Shirley Shirley, Amanda Webber, Bev

Pennick, and Judy Nusbaum. Those who are conducting the training include Michelle Reed, Doris Back-

us, Jack Bell, JoAnn Jones, and Pastor Dave. This newest class will be commissioned on Sunday, May

18 during worship.

Presbytery meeting coming to our church February 21-22 The winter meeting of the Yellowstone Presbytery will be held at our church on Friday, February 21 and Saturday,

February 22. The meeting will begin on Friday noon with lunch and will conclude at noon on Saturday. At the meeting we

will have time to draw closer to God and each other as we share in the life and ministry of our work together. The Yellow-

stone Presbytery is made up of 26 churches that are located in central and eastern Montana. You are invited to join us for

the entire meeting or any of its parts. A special worship service will be held on Friday evening at 7 PM.

Senior Singles events planned for February

The Senior singles are having a social at Phyllis Brown’s on Sunday Feb. 23 @ 1:30 PM. Phyllis lives at 1008

Poly Drive, Unit C2. We are going to visit, play cards & play games. You can bring your favorite table game, snacks &

Also in February is the Adult Resource Alliance’s annual Winter Yellowstone Park Trip Feb. 12-14. This trip in-

cludes charter bus transportation both ways, 2 nights lodging in West Yellowstone, 2 breakfasts & 2 dinners, snow coach

trip into Yellowstone Park and tour of the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. The total cost is $489 per person with double

Mission Ridge chapel on Thursday, January 9.

We share our sympathies with the family of Eleanor Weaver who died on January 18. A memorial service for Elea-

nor will be held at our church on Monday, February 3 at 11:00 AM. Lorrie Rimpe is Eleanor’s daughter.

her 90th birthday. Join us as we wish her well on this special occasion.
