The pencil maker took the pencil aside, just before putting it into the box. "There are five things you need to know," he told the pencil, “before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be. One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone's hand. Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you'll need it to become a better pencil. Three: You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make. Four: The most important part of you will always be what's inside. And Five: On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write.” The same applies to each one of us too. When we find an answer to Je- sus’ question (“Who do you say that I am?”), we will be able to make ourselves useful to our contemporaries. We have to undergo the process that the pencil undergoes. One: We will be able to do many great things, but only if we allow our- selves to be held in God's hand, and allow other human beings access to the many gifts we possess. Two: We will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going through various problems in life, but we'll need it to become a stronger person. Three: We will be able to correct any mistakes we might make. Four: The most important part of us will always be what's on the inside. And Five: On every surface we walk through, we must leave our mark. No matter what the situation, we must continue to do our duties to the best of our abilities. God wants to use us to make a difference in the world. It may not seem like a big thing, but whatever He asks us to do will make a difference. How do you see yourself responding to His question: “Who do you say that I am?” In Him we have new life, Anti-Catholicism and Abortion You do not have to be Catholic (or even religious) to know that medical and scientific evidence confirms that what grows in a mother's womb is a new, distinct human being. Moreover, every- one can understand that each human being----without discrimina- tion----merits dignity and respect. At the very least, respecting human life must exclude the deliberate and direct destruction of life---- and that is exactly what abortion is. However, the fact is that no institution has stood up against the abortion industry more than the Catholic Church. The Church has consistently and will continue to teach that abortion is evil, wheth- er its words are popular or unpopular, politically correct or incor- rect, because the "values" of different cultures may change from time to time, but the truth does not change. Pro-abortionists disparage Catholicism because it is the bulwark against abortion, just as the communists vilified Catholicism be- cause it was a bulwark against communism. Bernard Nathanson, a renowned and reformed abortionist, admit- ted that demonizing the Catholic Church was a specific tactic of the pro-abortion movement. He stated, "We systematically vilified the Catholic Church and its 'socially backward ideas' .......We fed the media such lies as 'we all know that opposition to abortion comes from the hierarchy and not from most Catholics'.....and that Catholics in favor of abortion are enlightened and forward look- ing". What is even more disturbing about Nathanson's statement is that the pro-abortion propaganda fed to the mainstream media is un- critically accepted by it. Part Time Cook @ Diocese of Bismarck The Diocese of Bismarck has an opening for an experienced part-time cook. Many days my spirit tires of the routine. How easily the best routine transforms into the monot- onous mundane without Your presence to guide me. To think that my own manipulation of events could sway Your hand to move my direc- tion! Oh the futility of my soul and fragility of my heart. I beg for Your forgiveness and ask for Your fortitude. Would You give me the strength to trust Your plan? As timing of the stone David slung at Go- liath, and the accuracy with which it struck his head, with the confi- dence of one who has slayed lions and bears with You, I humbly re- quest: Would You unveil the perfect moment to take action? Until that moment of Your prompting, may I trust You– the One worth trusting forever. Amen. Moses was leading the Hebrews to the Red Sea and the Egyptians were coming fast. Moses turned to his PR agent. “Where are all those boats I told you to get?!” The PR man said, “What boats? You never mentioned boats to me.” “Just great” said Moses, “what am I supposed to do, lift my staff and part the waters??” The PR man answered: “if you can pull that one off, I can get you a whole section in the Bible.” Catholic Home Mission Appeal Will happen the weekend of September 2nd-3rd. Your generosity is supporting our neighbors here at home, strengthening our Church throughout the Unite States and struggling faith communities across the country.

I am a huge fan of Pope Francis. However, I know

some people feel his mes-sages to be against

Church teachings. How can the people criticize

the pope when we believe our Lord has put Pope

Francis in the Chair of St. Peter?

Spoiler alert: I’m a big fan of Pope Francis, too! I be-lieve he’s doing much to bring people back to the Church. If you look closely at the pope’s message, I think you’ll find the difference is not one of content but of emphasis. Pope Francis has not changed any Church teaching, but he is shining the spotlight on some areas in particular. Pope Francis has put a great deal of emphasis on mercy, simplicity, the poor, and immigrants. These things have always been part of the Catholic Church. Our pope has decided that today these things need to be brought to the forefront. As Catholics, we are free to say things like, “I wish the pope would put more emphasis on doctrine,” or, “I wish he would talk more about what we need to do to be saved.” There’s even nothing wrong in saying, “I liked Pope Benedict better.” But, because Francis is in Peter’s chair, we must always first ask ourselves, “What is Jesus saying to me through the messages of Pope Francis?”
