India has gone through more changes in the past 20 years than

most countries witness over a century. The new energy era in

India demands productive and innovative HR practices. The

National Summit on Energy Sector Transforming HR: Agenda

for Action, brought forward the immense opportunities

available in the energy sector and HR’s crucial role in shaping

and redesigning the Talent Management and Retention

practices for a bright energy future for the country. NHRDN-

Imperatives’ was an initiative to encourage women leaders

to share their learnings and deliberate on various challenges

faced by women in leadership roles.

We also continued our effort to develop a greater awareness

of legal non-negotiables with our popular workshops on

Contract Labour and Labour Laws. Participants from USA

and Singapore bear testimony to the criticality of the subject

and expertise of NHRDN to deal with such sensitive matters.

About half of India's population is under the age of 25

and as many as 65 percent of them are under the age

of 35; a trend that manifests itself in the composition

of the workforce as well. While 'how', and 'how much'

Bold business solutions are needed for the new

energy era in India and the rest of the world. This also

entails bold HR solutions. In a future marked by

competitiveness through radical energy productivity,

an equally productive HR approach will be required.

BIMTECH & NHRDN in association with Power HR

Forum & Deloitte organized the National Summit on

Energy Sector to highlight the key changes that

today’s energy sector is going through and the role

that HR needs to play so that these changes can be

managed in a positive and innovative way without

many disruptions.

The Summit was a true amalgamation of experience

and wisdom in the area of human capital utilization

and development in the Energy Sector.

The who’s who from the Energy Sector and HR space

graced the occasion, including Padma Bhushan

Mr. B K Chaturvedi, Former Cabinet Secretary and

Member Planning Commission, Mr. R V Shahi Chairman,

Energy Infratech, Padma Shri Dr. Pritam Singh,

Chairman-LEAD Centre, and Mr. Pradeep Kumar

Pujari, Hon’ble Secretary, Ministry of Power, Govt. of

India.

Prof. K K Sinha, Dean (Development) BIMTECH led the

summit with guidance from Dr. H Chaturvedi, Director

BIMTCEH. Padma Shri Dr. Pritam Singh, Chairman-

LEAD Centre was the Chief Mentor of the Summit.

Mr. Dhananjay Singh Director General NHRDN was a

key support and very significant partner of the Summit.

Summit deliberations and discussions brought

forward the immense opportunities available in the

Energy Sector, and threw light upon the crucial role

that HR needs to play in innovatively shaping and

redesigning Talent Management and Retention

practices, in the Energy Sector.

The CEO panel was chaired and moderated by Mr. R V

Shahi, Chairman Energy Infratech. One of its

suggestions was that HR and the organization must

develop an institutionalized mechanism for consistent

scanning of future business environments and

strategy, and for analyzing the impact of innovative

and bold HR solutions. HR needs to look internally to

access available opportunities, and at the same time

develop new capabil i t ies (culture and core

competencies) to meet the challenges of the future. It

has to make bold decisions through benchmarking,

best practices, and assessments, and ensure

adoption of future practices with simplified systems

and processes, thereby avoiding technology fatigue.

The CEO panel discussion was followed by sessions

revolving around the themes of Transforming and

Nurturing Talent, Building Leadership Pipeline,

Employee Relationships, and Engagement - The New

Imperative and Future Strategy for Innovation - Role

of HR.

Panelists deliberated that the essence of success is

not in just knowing the goal or plan but in passionate

execution. HR must develop a culture of planning

resource management and development with

emphasis and orientation to contributions, results,

and execution.

The valedictory address was delivered by Padma

Bhushan Mr. B K Chaturvedi, Former Cabinet

Secretary, and Member Planning Commission.

Business Simulations are among the most powerful

tools for skill development as they are grounded in

practical application. The participants are stimulated

to think creatively and work in teams, and most

importantly apply the knowledge and skills they have

learned in concrete and life-like, but risk-free, situations.

Taking this forward, NHRDN organized a two-day

simulation session pan India for TATA Steel Ltd. The

business simulations focused on maximizing

leadership and strategy development. The participants

who were from offices across the country, worked on

creating strategic alignment with the business

objectives of the company. The exercise was highly

engaging with hands on learning, and was appreciated

by all participants.

The workshop was attended by over 50 participants of

TATA Steel Ltd. (TMDC) and received excellent

feedback from the participants. Their respective

organisations have also shown interest in repeating

the workshops in the near future.
