He is a strong advocate for creativity, and is also part of the global initiative advocating the importance of children’s play – creative play, i.e., unstructured and unsupervised rather than play constructed by adults. This gives children the opportunity to use their imaginations and develop their creativity, negotiating and problem solving skills. Creative play such as this can arise out of boredom – children don’t need to have their every moment of every day filled with activities. Another point he raised that resonated with me was the effect of social media. It used to be growing up we had around three or four close friends. No one had 300 friends. Sir Ken’s view is that friending and unfriending online is giving children a false idea of what friendship is. It is certainly food for thought. We had another very successful triathlon on Wednesday, which was very ably organized by Katy Howett. She is an expert in running this event, after many years of doing so. Thank you, Katy! It was great to see all the parents support the children, especially those that volunteered to be marshals. We appreciate the help given. It is always very heartening to see our students rising to the challenge in an event such as this. Our thanks must also go to members of the support group who organised the morning tea available in the hall for parents during this event. I’d like to thank Margaret Barber and Juliet Lee, who planned a wonderful camp for the Pod 7 students over the last two days. The children had a lot of fun, firstly challenging themselves at the Adventure Forest, followed by a walk in the Pukenui Forest today, where they learnt more about the kiwi released not long ago. There may be some very tired children tonight! I look forward to reading about some of the things the children experienced while on camp. Have a nice weekend Nga mihi Shelley Muston HAPPY Hurupaki Birthday to: Kaea Jay Abraham, Sam Welsh, Nikita Keoghan, MaKenzie Parry, Keilana Pornnikom and Ronan Chave!!!!! Pod 5 camp

Friday 23 March – Term One Week 7, 2018

Tena koutou

On Monday I attended a seminar with Sir Ken Robinson, a highly respected international educationalist who

was speaking about ‘Revolutionizing Education from the Ground Up’. He is a strong advocate for creativity,

and is also part of the global initiative advocating the importance of children’s play – creative play, i.e.,

unstructured and unsupervised rather than play constructed by adults. This gives children the opportunity

to use their imaginations and develop their creativity, negotiating and problem solving skills. Creative play

such as this can arise out of boredom – children don’t need to have their every moment of every day filled

with activities.

Another point he raised that resonated with me was the effect of social media. It used to be growing up we

had around three or four close friends. No one had 300 friends. Sir Ken’s view is that friending and

unfriending online is giving children a false idea of what friendship is. It is certainly food for thought.

We had another very successful triathlon on Wednesday, which was very ably organized by Katy Howett.

She is an expert in running this event, after many years of doing so. Thank you, Katy! It was great to see all

the parents support the children, especially those that volunteered to be marshals. We appreciate the help

given. It is always very heartening to see our students rising to the challenge in an event such as this. Our

thanks must also go to members of the support group who organised the morning tea available in the hall

for parents during this event.

I’d like to thank Margaret Barber and Juliet Lee, who planned a wonderful camp for the Pod 7 students

over the last two days. The children had a lot of fun, firstly challenging themselves at the Adventure

Forest, followed by a walk in the Pukenui Forest today, where they learnt more about the kiwi released not

long ago. There may be some very tired children tonight! I look forward to reading about some of the things

the children experienced while on camp.

Have a nice weekend

Pod 5

camp

In week four we went on our EOTC trip for 2018. On Thursday we had a fantastic day challenging ourselves at Adventure Forest. We were all very proud of what the students achieved throughout this experience. On Friday we had lots of fun doing craft activities, construction challenges and baking at school. The children really enjoyed themselves. Another huge thank you to our parent helpers. We could not have had such a successful trip without your support.

Last week, 24 year 4-6 children competed at the inter-school swimming sports held at Whangarei

Intermediate. Our swimmers swam their best and competition was fierce. Congratulations to you

all for your effort. Also many thanks to those parents who provided transport and supervision at

the pool, and those who turned up to cheer the children on.

Results: Xavier Brown 1st backstroke, Calum Kent 1st breaststroke, Tane Traill 1st

backstroke, Ashton Williams 1st freestyle.

These boys now have the opportunity to compete at the Northland competition on April 12 at

Dargaville.

Hurupaki Triathlon 2018

Another successful Hurupaki Triathlon is over. The children were all

fabulous competitors and supporters. A special mention must go to the

parents who came and helped children get out of the pool, put clothes on,

find out where to put their bikes, stay on the right route, pushed bikes and

supported the children all the way around the course. These kinds of events

cannot run without people like you. Thank you.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the Hurupaki Support Group

for providing the tea, coffee and cakes in the hall. Your efforts are

appreciated.

We congratulate all the children for their participation. However, only the seniors are timed.

Their results are:

Boys – 1st place – Merrick Walker in a time of 6.41, 2nd- Evan Nathan-Patuawa in a time of 6.46 and 3rd – Casey Wright

in a time of 6.52.

Girls – 1st place – Ari Welsh with a time of 7.09, 2nd – Kaja Haenga-Plank with a time of 7.30 and 3rd – Freya Temple

with a time of 8.02.

Thank you all and bring on 2019.

A BIG thank you to the managers - Jennie Cross, Russell Plank, Nick Swain and Jenny Traill for

supporting the teams.

Kapa Haka Performance Groups

On Wednesday we had the final try out and selection for the Junior and Senior Performance Groups. We are pleased to say that the children who elected to remain for the practice this week and not opt out have all been selected for the groups.

Well done to those tamariki. They will still be expected to show commitment, passion, and dedication to building their skills in kapa haka over the year.
