TV PIPELINE

It’s the war of the Byrdes in Season 3 of Netflix’s ‘Ozark’

By Jay Bobbin Q: After watching “Hawaii Five-0” recently, the announcer said the final episodes would start the next week. Has the show been can-celed, or is it just for a spring break? — Bob Cooper, East Liverpool, Ohio A: It’s for good. After 10 seasons, the CBS

reboot of the police drama is ending its run with a two-hour finale April 3. While a lot of actors and char-acters have come and gone (and sometimes come back) over the show’s decade, Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan have

been there from the start as the latest Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams, and they’ll be on hand for the finale — as will some oth-ers who have made their marks along the way, including Mark Dacascos as villain Wo Fat. Q: I recently saw “Tootsie” again, and I was wondering if the soap opera in it was meant to spoof any actual show. — Ann Hedley, via e-mail A: “Southwest General” was meant to be a humorous composite of various daytime serials, particularly since hospitals have been such a common setting for such dra-mas — certainly including “General Hos-pital” and the long-defunct “The Doctors.” There has been many a wild twist on such shows over the years, making it maybe not so far-fetched when Dustin Hoffman’s Michael Dorsey moves to end his charade as “Dorothy Michaels” by improvising the background of his/her character Emily Kimberly during a live telecast. Q: In looking up how many versions of “Shaft” there have been, it looks like there also was a TV series about the character. Is that true? — Ron Hoffman, Grand Junction, Colo. A: There had been three “Shaft” feature films starring Richard Roundtree when CBS ordered several TV-movies about the private detective, with Roundtree reprising the role, for “The New CBS Tuesday Night Movies” during the 1973-74 season. Seven such stories were made, and they alternated with James Stewart in the law drama “Hawkins” in that slot. The big-screen version of Shaft was watered down somewhat for broad-cast-television purposes, though Roundtree was able to restore the gritti-ness by returning in the 2000 and 2019 movie takes on “Shaft.”

Alex O’Loughlin

By George Dickie If there were a subtitle for Season 3 of

“Ozark,” it might be “Byrde vs. Byrde.” No, Marty and Wendy (Jason Bate-

man, Laura Linney) aren’t getting di-vorced — at least not in the foreseeable future — but there is an obvious discon-nect over whether the couple stay in business with the Navarro cartel as the new season of the Netflix drama gets going Friday, March 27.

Wendy, seeing an opportunity to make real money in the casino business and gain some security for her family, wants to expand and buy another casino. But Marty, who just wants to be done with it all once they’re square with the cartel, covertly undermines her efforts at every opportunity. The subterfuge even ex-tends to their marriage, where he pays off their therapist to take his side during marital therapy sessions.

Caught in between the two is cartel at-torney Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer), who has relocated to Osage Beach to watch over things for kingpin Omar Navarro (Felix Solis). Though not crazy about her new locale, she’s keen on helping Wendy with the expansion and the two become fast friends.

Meanwhile, Wendy’s troubled brother Ben (Tom Pelphrey, “Banshee”) arrives and learns too much about everything while also taking an interest in Ruth (Julia Garner), now the casino’s man-ager. And the FBI is also sniffing around for evidence of money laundering.

There are other moving parts in this story but at the center of it are Marty and

Wendy and the woman who must navi-gate between them, Helen. The new sea-son brings McTeer aboard as a series regular and the British actress relished the opportunity to explore the human side of what is otherwise a casually ruth-less character.

“The thing is if you’re a lawyer to a drug cartel ...,” she explains, “there aren’t necessarily many girls you can have a drink of wine and have a heart-to-heart with. So when you meet some-body who is also in the same line of business as you, you can be a little more honest. They get you. And I think Helen thinks that Wendy is a really sharp cookie and good at what she’s doing. She thinks she’s smart and clever and manipulative, all of which are qualities she admires. And of course, they’re both mothers with the same-aged children.”

Playing with the spouse-versus-spouse scenario was great fun for series showrunner Chris Mundy, who says it’s a natural outgrowth of the events of Sea-son 2, in which Wendy killed Ruth’s fa-ther Cade Langmore and caused Marty to question who his partner really is.

“We just started saying, ‘What do they want?’ ” Mundy says. “Wendy wanted to expand, and Marty’s more naturally con-servative. So we were just like, ‘Well, how much fun can we have pushing that to marital extremes?’ (Especially) when you’re dealing in crime and what people are willing to do to get what they want within it. And from there, everything can just spiral quickly.”

Janet McTeer (left) and Laura Linney star in “Ozark,” which opens its third season Friday on Netflix.

DEALING WITH THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC Last week, I declared a state of emergency for the City of Bayonne.

This declaration enables us to deal more effectively with the Coron-avirus, which has caused a global pandemic. “Global pandemic” means that the disease has spread to countries all over the world. A state of emergency enables the City of Bayonne to purchase nec-

essary supplies more quickly than usual, if needed. If our emergency services personnel incur extra hours as a result of dealing with the Coronavirus, the emergency declaration allows us to apply for federal and state funding to cover the extra work. We can all take steps to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus. The

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise all of us to wash our hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds each time. Anyone who is well should avoid close contact with sick people. If you are sick, you should stay home. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, and throw the tissue away. Clean and disinfect fre-quently touched objects. If you are sick, wear a face mask to prevent others from getting sick. If you are caring for sick people, please wear a face mask for your protection. Wear a face mask if you are in-structed to do so by medical personnel. However, most of us do not need face masks, which are in short supply in any case.

Medical authorities advise people to avoid large crowds, because infections can spread when people are in close quarters with each other. That is why so many schools have closed and large events have been cancelled. Senior citizens and people with compro-

mised immune systems and serious medical problems are being urged to stay off cruise ships, because illnesses can spread quickly on those vessels. Signs of Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-

19 include respiratory infections, coughing, and difficulty breathing. If you have these symptoms, please call your doctor’s office or a hos-pital before you go anywhere. Walking into a hospital or a doctor’s office with this disease risks infecting everyone there including the doctors and the nurses. That is why it is so important to contact a medical office first to see what to do. We don’t know how long the Coronavirus-2019 has to go before it

peaks. If we all follow healthy practices, we can slow the virus down and prevent some people from getting it.

Vivian Howard goes ‘Somewhere South’ to find the foods

that connect cultures Vivian Howard was ready to move on. After five seasons hosting and producing her Peabody and Daytime

Emmy Awardwinning culinary/documentary series “A Chef’s Life,” about the ups and downs of running an upscale restaurant in her rural com-munity, the Kinston, N.C.-based chef realized her interests had evolved and wanted to try something else. She also wasn’t all that crazy about putting her personal life on camera.

Which is what led her to create “Somewhere South.” Premiering Friday, March 27, on PBS (check local listings), the six-part hourlong series sees Howard taking a culinary tour of the changing South to find the dishes that connect us all – be they noodles, hand pies, dumplings or orridges – though expressed differently in different cultures. Along the way, she learns new things and discovers how sharing a meal can create a com-fortable place where meaningful conversations can take place.

Among the places she visits are Charleston, S.C., where she samples grits with rice middlins made by Gullah chefs; North Carolina, where she tries the collard sandwich, a staple of Lumbee Indian cuisine; and in Fri-day’s premiere, West Virginia to learn how to make the pepperoni roll, a hand food popular with local coal miners.

“Pepperoni rolls are an American adaptation of a snack in Italy or Sicily,” Howard explains, “where a lot of the coal miners in West Virginia came from. And so they settled in Fairmont, W.Va., and because they needed to go down in the mines and have lunch, housewives were pack-ing up rolls and sticks of pepperoni. And some ingenious housewife one day decided to roll up the pepperoni in a roll and bake it and it became really West Virginia’s ubiquitous dish.”

“I had lots of friends in West Virginia and they would come back from

spring break with just trays of pepperoni rolls,” she continues, “And I had never heard of it but as a teen living in a dorm, I was like super into it, so I had this connec-tion to the pepperoni roll and really as a hand pie or the food of labor, the food of con-venience.”

In another episode, Howard heads to Sa-vannah, Ga., to sample another crosscultural staple, the local por-ridge. For this, she drops in on chef Mashama Bailey at e Grey, a converted bus station, to try its varia-tions on the traditional dish.

“We all have a porridge,” Howard says. “Everybody has a noodle, ev-eryone has a hand pie, everyone has a pickle. And so in the porridge episode, we really dig into grits as a porridge.”

“And so we tour her restaurant,” she continues, “and she makes a very humble porridge and a very elevated porridge. And we talk about how in the South and really like the United States over, chefs are taking very humble food traditions and exalting them and making them fancy.”

By George Dickie For its fourth season, “One Day at a

Time” will have a new network and a slightly different format but with the same premise of a Cuban-American family’s life in Los Angeles.

Premiering Tuesday, March 24, the retelling of creator Norman Lear’s classic 1975-84 sitcom moves over to the ca-blenet Pop TV after three seasons on streaming giant Netflix, to continue the story of the Alvarez family through the

experiences of matri-arch Lydia (Rita Moreno), daughter Penelope (Justina Machado), her chil-dren Elena and Alex (Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz), build-ing superintendent Schneider (Todd Grinnell) and family friend and Penelope’s boss Dr. Berkowitz (Stephen To-bolowsky).

Among the new season’s storylines, Penelope will explore a surprising relation-ship, Schneider’s ro-mance with Avery (India de Beaufort) deepens, Elena and Alex experience rites

‘One Day at a Time’ pops up for Season 4 on Pop TV

of passage and Lydia’s will-they-or-won’t-they relationship with Berkowitz will continue to play out amid the tropical landscape of Cuba, where they were seen puffing on cigars at the close of Season 3.

“We are going to get to see Cuba. That much I know, right?” Moreno told a re-cent gathering of journalists in Pasadena, Calif. “But I have no idea, and I just love it that Berkowitz is involved, and ... I hope (viewers) loved that ending with the two of us smoking cigars.”

“I still don’t know if I trust it or not,” Tobolowsky adds. “I don’t know if a ticket to Cuba is enough for me to trust this relationship. But I love the fact that the writers also — as well as I — believed that the course of true love never runs smooth, and that’s been my life, life. So I am very much looking forward to what bumps we’ll find along the road still to come.”

Viewers will also notice a subtle change in how the series is filmed. Shot in front of a live audience, the four-camera com-edy now airs on an ad-supported network, meaning that acts will have to be written to accommodate commercial breaks, something that was not a consideration on streaming. Otherwise, everything else is the same, including its usual mix topical themes and family relationships.

“It is a universal story about family and love,” Machado says. “We just happen to be Cuban Americans on the show.”

Justina Machado, Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz (from left) star in “One Day at a Time,” which opens its fourth season Tuesday on Pop TV.

“I Know This Much Is True” (HBO — series premiere, April 27)

Three-time Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo stars in a dual role, playing twins Do-minick and Thomas Birdsey, in this six-episode limited drama series. Set in 20th-century America, the story tells about the paralled lives of the two men dealing with betrayal, sacrifice and for-giveness. Melissa Leo, Rosie O’Donnell, Imogen Poots and Archie Panjabi also star.

IN FOCUS

“She Walks With Apes” (BBC America — new special, April 22)

This new documentary, appropriately air-ing on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, chronicles the epic story of three women — Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey and Biruté Galdikas — who dedicated their lives to researching the Great Apes. Science has greatly expanded its knowledge of the an-imals and the state of the rainforests thanks in large part to these women’s ef-forts. Actress Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) serves as narrator.

IN FOCUS

“Mental Samurai” (Fox — season premiere, April 22)

Rob Lowe returns to host the second sea-son of this mental obstacle course that sees contestants battling the boundaries of their minds to answer questions accu-rately with speed and precision. To take the action up a notch, the contestants are then whipped around the arena in a high-speed capsule while it does a series of twists and turns. Steel brains and stom-achs need apply!

and the Beautiful.”

Hollywood By Tony Rizzo HOLLYWOOD — After the disaster that was “Dark Phoenix,” Jennifer Lawrence is back with a vengeance. She’s already completed “Red, White, Water,” with Brian Tyree Henry, and has just signed to star in director Adam McKay’s Net-flix comedy “Don’t Look Up,” about two low-level astronomers embarking on a media tour to warn mankind of an approaching asteroid that will de-stroy the Earth ... a comedy? Then she’ll produce and star in “Mob Girl” for Universal, about novelist and Jazz Age socialite Zelda Fitzgerald. Ron Howard will direct. That’s followed by yet another collaboration with Adam McKay, “Bad Blood,” with Elizabeth Holmes.

*** Fresh from “The Irishman,” Martin Scorsese will go in a different direction with his next project, which stars Willem Dafoe, Tye Sheri-dan, Oscar Isaac and Tiffany Haddish. “The Card Counter” follows Sheridan and Isaac through the world of casinos and gambling as they attempt to win a World Series of Poker tournament. Justin Timberlake is playing Eddie Palmer in “Palmer,” about a former college football player just out of prison who faces conflicts from his past while raising a young boy orphaned by his mother. Justin is taking on this serious role as he approaches age 40. Sylvester Stallone is up next in “Little America,” set in the future where America is bankrupt and

turned into a war zone. Sly plays a former Army Ranger hired by an Asian billionaire to find his daughter. *** In 1967, 20th Century Fox made a musical film fantasy with a star they thought was a sure-fire winner after his success and an Oscar for “My

Fair Lady”: Rex Harrison. But despite a top leading lady in Samantha Eggar and Broadway legend Anthony Newley, and one of the biggest Hollywood pre-mieres of all time, “Doctor Dolittle” grossed only $9 million of its $17 mil-lion cost. In 1998 they tried again, this time with Eddie Murphy, and bingo ... it cost $70 million and grossed $294 million. In 2001 they created a sequel with Murphy that cost $70 million and grossed $176 million. But Eddie

balked at doing a another “Dr. Dolit-tle,” so a sequel was made with Kyla Pratt, who had played his daughter in the first two films. But theaters balked, and it was more profitable to send it straight to video in 2006. Lo and behold it was a hit, so a “Dr. Dolittle” 4 & 5 starred her and went straight to video in 2008 and 2009. Flash-forward to 2020 and the latest “Dolittle” starring Robert Downey Jr., which cost $175 mil-lion and earned $185 million. Downey played “Iron Man” in 10 films over 12 years, and will be brought back to life, through the magic of movies, in “Black Widow,” out May 1. Guess all you have to do to become immortal is wear an iron suit or learn to talk to animals!

“All in the Family” (CBS, 1971-79) Well, of course. After writing for some of the classic shows of the 1950s, Lear started to build his own dynasty as a television pro-ducer with this comedy classic – based on a British series – about unapologetic bigot Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Con-nor), his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton) and their family and friends. CBS understandably was nervous about the show before its premiere, but it became a TV landmark. “Sanford and Son” (NBC, 1972-77) Lear also made a British show the basis for this hit about a junk dealer and his son (Redd Foxx, Demond Wilson) who often were at generational odds over various personal and societal mat-ters. “Maude” (CBS, 1972-78) The first of several “All in the Family” spinoffs made Broadway veteran Beatrice Arthur a television star as Maude Findlay, whose liberal views fre-quently echoed the women’s movement of the era. “Good Times” (CBS, 1974-79) One spinoff begat an-other as Maude’s housekeeper, Florida Evans (Esther Rolle), became the focus of her own show ... which yielded a breakout star in Jimmie Walker, whose character J.J.’s catchphrase “Dyno-mite!” became standard vocabulary of the late 1970s. “The Jeffersons” (CBS, 1975-85) A family introduced on “All in the Family” was “movin’ on up” in another sig-nature show of its time, with Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford as upwardly mobile title couple George and “Ouisie.” “One Day at a Time” (CBS, 1975-84; Netflix, 2017-

19; Pop, 2020-present) The previously unknown Valerie Bertinelli became a major TV personality out of the original version of this this sitcom about a divorcee and her two daughters, with Lear and his colleagues successfully updat-ing the concept with a Latino take for its current incarna-tion. “Hot l Baltimore” (ABC, 1975) Including Charlotte Rae, James Cromwell and Conchata Ferrell, the purposely and wonderfully diverse cast of Lear’s take on Lanford Wilson’s play about a Maryland hotel and its dwellers made this show distinctive, if also a bit ahead of its time in broadcast-TV terms. “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” (Syndicated, 1976-77) Like the serials it spoofed, this soap-opera par-ody aired daily – or, more accurately, nightly (in most cases) – with Louise Lasser as the title character in the midst of countless complications in the supposedly idyllic town of Fernwood. “All’s Fair” (CBS, 1976-77) Though this didn’t have the impact of other Lear shows, this conservatives-liberal com-edy offered a great starring team in Richard Crenna and Bernadette Peters. It also had a supporting player of note, several years before his own star really began to rise ... Michael Keaton. “The Powers That Be” (NBC, 1992-93) Lear targeted Washington, D.C., for satire – at a time when that wasn’t as common as it is now – by casting John Forsythe as a ca-reer politician with relatives and associates whose behavior constantly threatens to land him in headlines for all the wrong reasons.
