Welcome, members of of BAA and other FRC Team, to our annual training session, hosted by CCBC and
sponsored by the Baltimore Area Alliance of FRC Teams along with the TIME Center and your local
Maryland FIRST representatives!
This list of sessions is broken down into 5 strands or general topic areas, and each will be in a different
room on the CCBC Campus. Directions to the campus and the building are provided in anotherdocument. Please note that this year we have expanded the topic areas, and included sessions for team
members, mentors and parents. The five strands are Administrative and Information (All about the BAA
and FIRST, and Food), Team Building (All About Teams and Making Yours Stronger), Technical (All About
Building Your Robot), Labview and Autodesk Inventor.

Scholarship information and discuss goals and objectives, as well as timetables. Some
question/answer time with various mentors and parents regarding the scholarships
open to FIRST students will be included. Students and parents are highly encouraged to
review scholarships and requirements on the USFIRST website at any time, but we hope
that by providing a space and shared time to discuss that we can help raise awareness
of the opportunities for scholarships.

Room 308B All About Teams and Making Yours Stronger
99:50 am New to FIRST Mike Dennis
For rookies and rookie teams, all the basics. Long term mentors will attempt to guide the
mentors and team members new to FIRST along the path to success. Guidance on how to
manage a team and the best practices as appropriate to FIRST will be presented. This
session is recommended for members and mentors of rookie teams and anyone new to
FIRST.
10-10:50 am Systems Engineering 101 Bill LandinThis session will identify classical System Engineering principles that can be used to help
ensure the overall success and experience for FRC teams. It will lay the foundation by
exploring the concept of a System, discuss several tradeoffs that teams are likely to
encounter during the build season, present a basic system engineering process for teams
to follow, and identify several supporting activities that teams should employ to help
teams capitalize on their experience.
11-11:50 am 365 FRC Systems Planning Ashley Cowall
A look at year round planning, as well as team organization and sustainability, utilizing
systems thinking. Through looking at a team as a system of systems, we learn we can
apply similar problem solving and planning methods throughout team operations, leading
to a sustainable and easily transferable system for team management. Will build concepts
through discussion of challenges FRC teams face and solutions we all have encountered.
11:50 pm Branding & Entrepreneurship Ashley CowallMaking your team stand out, marketing tips, key things to know about FIRST as a 'brand'and how to attract sponsors through image.
2- 2:50 pm Judging 101 Jenny BeattyThe audience for this session is both rookie and veteran mentors and students. It will
cover the mechanics of judging, including the Chairmans Award process, how the teams
can help the judges do their jobs and hints for how the students can be great
ambassadors for their team.
3-3:50 pm Mentoring Roundtable Rose Young and Anne Kellerman
Panel discussion followed by open sharing of experiences among mentors regarding the
philosophy and practical considerations of mentoring a FIRST team. The issues will include
those facing new teams, as well as veteran teams. We all face challenges in providing the
right support and guidance, raising funds, and dealing with the stresses that come along
with the wonderful experiences of FRC. Some resources will be shared, and all
suggestions and ideas are welcome for the growth of stronger teams.

Room 315 All About Building Your Robot
99:50 am Beta Testing Labview
Zach Long
FIRST Team 836 (RoboBees) will present findings to date on their Beta Testing efforts in
preparation for the 2012 FRC season. The RoboBees are exploring the new capabilities
and any other updates that may be released with the new version of the LabVIEW
programming system.
10- 10:50 am Motors 101 Mark Eastman
This session will cover the basics of selecting the motors to use for various applications,
the types of limitiations imposed by FIRST on the number and type of motors, and the
parameters of motors which team members need to be aware of during design and build.
Some recommendations for working within typical FRC constraints of the game as well as
physical constraints will be discussed. This will provide a foundation for the drive train
system discussion, and relate to manipulator design as well.
11 11:50 am Electrical Systems 101 Tom Diviney (2377)Basics of electricity and an introduction to electronics will be presented. This session is a
general introduction to electronics and a specific introduction to how electronics and
electronic devices are used in FIRST robotics.
11:50 pm Drive Train Systems Sarah Montplaisir
The performance of your robot's drive train will be determined by a number of factors
including the number and selection of motors, gear ratios, 2-wheel vs. 4-wheel drive,
wheel selection, and the choice to implement a gearshift mechanism. This course
presents a spreadsheet tool that you can use to explore the performance of the robot(torque, acceleration, speed) under a variety of scenarios. The spreadsheet encapsulates
the basic mechanical equations that determine those performance measures for a
particular drive train design
22:50 pm Pneumatics and Manipulator SystemsMark Eastman and Fred Needel
his session will be a beginner level introduction to pneumatics with a focus on the
pneumatic system used in the FIRST robot. The benefits and shortcomings of using
pneumatic devices on your robot will be presented, along with design suggestions for
using pneumatics, with a focus on how pneumatics are frequently applied to various
manipulators of the type used in FIRST Robotics.

3:50 pm Getting Through Inspection Dan Atkinson, John Jacobson, and Paul Shan
Experienced FRC robot inspectors will present a special, capstone session for the technical
presentations. This is a unique opportunity to hear about the do's and dont's from the
inspetors' point of view, and ask questions to help focus your efforts in quality, design and
systems for the 2012 season.

Autodesk Inventor Ron KarpinskiThis session will be a basic introduction to AutoCAD using the Autodesk Inventor
software. Autodesk is a long time supporter of FIRST and generously offers free software
to FIRST participants. This session will explore the basics of designing components andassemblies in Autodesk Inventor. This class will be limited in attendance to 12 students
per session due to the number of computers. Laptops with Autodesk Inventor may also be
used, but space in the room is very limited. Three levels of instruction have been
included, each one twice during the day. Teams are encouraged to sign more than 3
students. Adjustments will be made on the day of the training, an any open seats will be
