YEAR 12 GRADUATION
Congratula ons to the Year 12 Class of 2021 for the smooth and very joyful finish to their school year. The Gradua on Mass, Farewell Assembly, Thanksgiving Ceremony and associated celebra ons which took place last week provided an opportunity to prayerfully reflect on this significant milestone for our Year 12 students; to acknowledge and celebrate their achieve-ments and to thank them for their individual and collec ve contribu ons to the College. On Friday evening, the students, in the presence of families and staff, were formally graduated. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of the staff and to commend them for the support they have afforded their students over the years. Their professionalism, exper se and care are much appreciated. Special thanks are extended to Mr Joe Sciorilli, Head of Senior School, and the Cluster Leaders - Mrs Jess Goodhill, Miss Jess Mar n and Mr Adam Waddell - for their encouragement and support of the students through their dedica on and hard work. From the Principal cont... Message to the Class of 2021 ‐ “Called to be Heroes”
The following is an abridged version of my remarks to the young men and women of the Class of 2021 delivered during their Farewell Assembly on Thursday.
If ever we needed new heroes, new John the Bap sts to offer some Good News amidst all the darkness in the world, and to point people to Christ, it is right now. Never in history have you, the men, and women of the Class of 2021, had more opportuni es to be heroes.
However, you don’t have to become a Jedi Knight or similar, to be heroic. Heroes are not all that different from most people. In many respects, they are ordinary people who do ordinary things extraordinarily well day a er day. In fact, there are several skills you can build to boost your hero characteris cs. Developing empathy, becoming competent and skilled, and being persistent in the face of obstacles are all abili es you can work on over me. By doing so, you can enhance your capacity to help others and have a posi ve impact on the lives of those with whom you interact.
Year 12s, you have made it to gradua on, which has taken pa ence, dedica on, a lot of hard work and the support of many people. Your gradua on from the College is a celebra on that represents a gateway to your future, a future that is unknown and unknowable. Not even a Jedi can foresee with any certainty what the future holds for you.
Your gradua on is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end but could be considered the end of the beginning. You are now on the cusp of something new, not only building on what has gone before but embracing a whole new world of studies, work rela onships and commitments. As such, endless possibili es are now open to you.
So, prepare to go forward full of the joy of the Gospel and the life of the Holy Spirit – confident that the Church loves you, God’s spirit rests upon you and the College is proud of you!
We congratulate you on your achievements and thank you for your individual and collec ve contribu ons to Ursula Frayne Catholic College. Know that Jesus is here for you, and he is greater than any challenge in your life. Say yes to him, as Mother Ursula Frayne did; point always to him, like John the Bap st; and you will have all the iden ty, mission and support you need for the wonderful adventure that awaits.
We encourage each of you to be new episodes in the greatest of all epics, your life – a life centred in Christ. Be bold and brave enough to be your true self who is made in the image and likeness of God. Believe in yourself. Like Luke Skywalker, you are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and capable of more than you can imagine.
We trust that in the future you will con nue to meet new people, explore new places, discover new ideas and experience the world with a sense of wonder, crea vity, and imagina on. I am confident that each of you is ready to go out to the wider world to bravely develop and become who you really are as you heroically confront challenges and accomplish great things.
We are coun ng on you to heroically make the world a be er place by always choosing the ‘enlightened path’. The world demands that you be protagonists of history because life is always beau ful when you choose to live it to the full. Like the Jedi of Star Wars, JB in 1st century Pales ne, and previous Frayne Graduates I have every confidence that each of you will rise to this challenge and “may the force be with you”.
CONGRATULATIONS
We send our congratula ons to Elisha Gabb (Year 5) who competed at the Wes Australian Gymnas cs State Championship coming in overall Runner-Up Champion in the State. Well done Elisha!
With regards and best wishes.

Chaplain’s Reflection
FRAYNE NEWS VOLUME 32 ISSUE 30 / TERM 4 WEEK 3 / 25 OCTOBER 2021
SAINT LUKE
The feast of St Luke was celebrated on 18 October. He is the patron saint of ar sts, physicians, bachelors, surgeons and butchers. He is also the writer of the Gospel that has his name and of the Acts of the Apostles. For this he is called the Evangelist and an Apostle. We know few facts about the life of St Luke from the le ers of St Paul whom he accompanied during some of his missionary trips. St Paul called him "the beloved physician". We do have an understanding of him through his own wri ngs. Some people think that he was a Greek who lived in An och, because he wrote for a gen le Chris an audience and explained Jews' tradi ons unknown to them; he also had a special sensi vity with the gen les, giving us parables that are only found in his Gospel, like the Good Samaritan and the one about the grateful gen le leper. There are many other parables and miracles exclusive to St Luke like the story of Lazarus, the Prodigal Son and the forgiven woman washing Jesus' feet. From him, we also know Mary's Magnificat, the Annuncia on, Mary's visit to Elizabeth, the Presenta-on and the story of Jesus lost in the Temple. For this we know that he had a special connec on with Mary. Even so, there are some that
claim that he was the first to paint the Virgin Mary, making him the patron of painters and he is o en portrayed as pain ng pictures of Mary. In the Acts, he tells us about the trips of St Paul and in many occasions he uses "we", indica ng that he was personally there during those mes.
His wri ngs are filled with rich vocabulary and his emphasis is on the forgiveness and mercy of God to sinners. In his Gospel Jesus takes the side of the sinner who wants to return to God. Through all of them, we can say that St Luke loved the poor, wanted the door of the Kingdom opened to all, respected women and saw hope in God's mercy for everyone. St Luke is o en shown with an ox or calf because these are the symbols of the sacrifice Jesus made for us. Fr Jesus Bello College Chaplain, Duncan Campus

Being ac ve, having a sense of belonging and having a purpose in life all contribute to the happiness and good mental health of the students at Frayne. Children who ride, walk or scoot to school on Friday will go into the draw to win a $50.00 Rebel Sports Voucher. Par cipants are also invited to wear ‘Crazy Socks’. They will be greeted at the Camberwell Street gates by a special guest from 8:15am. FRAYNE NEWS VOLUME 32 ISSUE 30 / TERM 4 WEEK 3 / 25 OCTOBER 2021
BLESSING AND OPENING OF THE NEW NINJA WARRIOR PLAYGROUND
Over the last 18 months, the whole Junior School community has been working towards building a new playground on the top grass area for students to challenge themselves upon. It all began with the students being surveyed about what they enjoyed playing on when they went to parks and playgrounds. This then formed the basis for a pitch to four companies who produce children’s playgrounds. The four companies’ designs were then voted on by students to whi le it down to one company. From here, a parent body was convened to add the voice of parents to the process. It was at this stage that the whole concept was finalised to include the complete redesigning of the top space to include a living wall surrounding the ninja course. This venture was only able to come to frui on with the support of the Friends of Frayne Commi ee and their financial assistance. We are forever grateful to the Friends of Frayne as they con nue to look for ways to support the children by funding such exci ng projects. We would like to formally recognise and show our apprecia on to all of the people involved in this project at our Blessing and Opening on Friday 29 October at 9am. A short ceremony will be held to Bless the playground and unveil the new plaque which acknowledges the contri-bu on of the Friends of Frayne. As many families will already be coming to school to support their children on “Your Move Day,” we invite you all to be part of this celebra on on the top grass area.
JUNIOR SCHOOL INTERSCHOOL SPORTS
Over the next three weeks, students in the Junior School will be represen ng the College in several Interschool ac vi es. We wish all the students par cipa ng in the Interschool Athle cs Carnival on Thursday 28 October, every success and look forward to hearing of their achievements. We also extend our best wishes to the Year 5 students who are busy training hard to represent the College in Tennis, Ul mate Frisbee, and Cricket at the upcoming Summer Carnival. Thank you to Mr Nguy and all of the staff and coaches who have been preparing our students for these opportuni es.
“SQUID GAMES”
Over the course of our first week back at school, it has come to the a en on of the staff that some children on the Primary Campus have been, at home, viewing inappropriate, violent content with strong language and frightening moments in a recent series released by Ne lix called, “Squid Game”. It is rated MA+ for mature adults. It is of great concern to the Leadership Team, and all staff, that some of our students have access to such extremely violent and disturbing content. Children simply cannot “unsee” violent ac ons and behaviours and do not possess the capacity to process age-inappropriate material. Disturbingly, an aggressive version of a familiar children’s game, ‘Red light, Green light,’ is played in the series - this, and other inappropriate language and content are nega vely influencing playground games. Unfortunately, the series is being spoken about by those who have seen it to those who haven’t. We would like to strongly recommend to all parents/guardians that you discuss with your child(ren) the sites they are accessing and show them that you are interested and concerned in what they are watching on TV and viewing online. As always, you as parents, determine what your child has access to and how long your child spends online. In the interests of keeping our students safe, we also strongly suggest a screen audit (with your child) to randomly review sites they have accessed. We remind you of some ps for healthy and safe online behaviours: Restrict internet access to all devices at night. Encourage children to use technology in openly accessible spaces (not in bedrooms) so that you are always aware of what they are
viewing. We direct you to the following links which could further assist you in discussing this serious ma er with your child(ren)…. h ps://digiisocial.com/lets-talk-squid-game-and-childrens-exposure/ h ps://www.esafety.gov.au/ Please consider the impact and possible desensi sa on to extreme violence, gambling, and addic on that exposure to this series may bring. Thank you for your co-opera on and support as we work in partnership to protect all our students and to constantly strive to ac on our Christ-centred values and beliefs. If you have any ques ons or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact any member of staff.

This reflects not only the Frayne Value of Excellence but also a line in our College prayer ‘Let us strive for excellence in all we do’. Tyler is a great friend and accepts everyone into his group or game during break mes. He is always kind and respec ul to other students and staff.
