1 Newsletter No. 32 - Term 4 Week 2 19 October 2017 TRANSITION Foundation Transition begins this Friday 20th October at 9:30am. This is a fabulous opportunity for the children to get to know each other and feel comfortable in the school buildings and grounds. Parents are very welcome to stay and have morning tea with members of our Parents & Friends Association in the stadium foyer. This is also a time for parents new to our school to meet the parents of other children in Foundation. You can also ask questions of some of the staff and P&F parents who will be at the morning tea. If you are new to the school we want you to feel as comfortable as possible and start to become part of our school community. These sessions are very beneficial for the incoming students and I hope tomorrow they all go home with lovely tales to tell. When you do listen to your child, please ask them, What is the best thing you did today? These answers are always delightful and if you or your child has any questions, please let us know at the next transition session. Do try to bring your child to at least four of these sessions. GRADE 2 SLEEPOVER As all the Grade 2 parents would know, the format of our Grade 2 Sleepover has changed slightly this year. The excitement of coming to school for the night is still there, and the children are beginning to get very excited about their upcoming sleepover, having recently decorated pillow cases for the evening and chosen their preferred pizza toppings, but this year we have changed to make the opportunity more inclusive for the Grade 1s. As the Sleepover is on a Thursday night, the Grade 2s will come to school for dinner and activities, but on the next day, the Grade 1s will be joining the Grade 2s for Tabloid Sports and other sporting activities. We will have some very tired Grade 2 students on Friday night, but I m sure they will have enjoyed the whole adventure at school. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL SunSmart is here A reminder to all families that Term 4 is a SunSmart term and hats are needed to be worn in the playground. Uniforms are available to purchase offsite at RHSports at Unit 12, 100 New Street, Ringwood. What is Respectful Relationships? Respectful Relationships is about tackling family violence through education.

Rosie Batty, CEO of the Luke Batty Foundation “the school community is an essential part of social reform by modelling a culture of respect through the whole school, not just by teaching respect in the classroom”.

Evidence presented to the Royal Commission into Family Violence was clear that school-based prevention is effective to reduce the incidence of family violence. Recommendations handed down by the Royal Commission as part of their report reflect the evidence that school-based efforts are required as a long-term prevention strategy. The Royal Commission into Family Violence specifically recommended the Victorian Government mandate Respectful Relationships into schools and do this using a best practice whole of school approach tested in 2015 by the Our Watch Respectful Relationships Education in Schools (RREiS) pilot.

The Government is investing $21.8 million over two years to roll out a holistic approach to Respectful Relationships across schools and early childhood services. This approach will support the delivery of respectful relationships education, through the new Victorian Curriculum across all year levels. The unacceptably high rates of family violence, in particular violence against women and their children, are well documented. The Government know that cultural change is necessary and that education setting can play an integral role in this. Evidence shows that schools and early childhood services can play a powerful role in changing this story for future generations. A good education is about more than simply getting good marks. It is about becoming a member of society and succeeding in life – knowing how to build respectful relationships is key to achieving this. While schools across Victoria have been teaching respectful relationships in their curriculum for many years, this initiative will strengthen their ability to promote and model gender equity in everything they do and support students and staff affected by family violence.

Who to Contact for Further Information Kalinda Primary School has committed itself to this campaign, and has set up a Respectful Relationships Committee made up of the Principal, Assistant Principal, and three key teachers. The Committee will seek to ensure that we provide an environment where equality and respect are promoted both inside and outside of the classroom. The Committee will seek to engage staff students and parents, and explore all levels of school life to ensure we are providing an empowering and respectful environment for all. Our Respectful Relationships Committee will endeavour to regularly update our school community on this project, and welcomes all ideas and contributions.

You can contact members of the Respectful Relationship Committee at [email protected]. Respectful Relationships forms part of the Victorian Curriculum and is NOT related to the Safe Schools program. If you have any concerns or would like further information about Respectful Relationships, please contact the school. RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS COMMITTEE

TRANSITION This term we will begin to transition our current Foundation students to Grade 1. They will have the opportunity to visit several of the Grade 1 classrooms and meet some of the current Grade 1 students who will become their classmates next year. When talking to the students, our focus will be on how similar Grade 1 is to Foundation and that this is just the next stage in their learning journey (not harder!). Please encourage your child to tell you about their experience visiting these classrooms. And, of course, if you have any concerns, do speak to your child’s current teacher about them.

CANTEEN NEWS

Please take note of the new Summer Menu, which was distributed at the end of last term, and is also on the website. Make sure orders are chosen from the new menu as some items have been discontinued and there are some price increases. Please also check to make sure the correct amount of money is enclosed; we are still receiving quite a few orders with not enough money to cover the items chosen. If orders are received with not enough money to cover the order, invoices are sent home with the children. Please check their bags for any notices. If you are unable to supply a lunch bag, please add 10cents to the order and the canteen will supply one. If your child uses a Sticky Beaks lunch bag, it would be appreciated if these could be cleaned out on a regular basis, removing any food and rubbish left in from the previous order. Please note also, it would be appreciated if you could supply plastic spoons and forks if you send lunches from home which need those utensils. We don’t always have these available. Thank you for your cooperation. If Smoothies or milk drinks are ordered, these must be picked up separately from the Canteen, as they cannot be placed into the lunch baskets. Icypoles are available Tuesday to Friday. ICYPOLE SALES: As the hot summer weather is rapidly approaching, the sales of Icypoles is going to cause huge queues at canteen. We will trial a new system starting from today, until further notice, as follows: Foundation, Grade 1 & Grade 2 students will line up inside the Multi-Purpose room. All other grades are to line up outside the canteen as usual. Please ask your children to think about what flavour they would like to order before they join the queue and to have a backup choice of Icypole, just in case their favourite flavour has run out! If possible, please give them the correct money. If you have any suggestions or queries regarding our Canteen, please feel free to ring or come down to the Canteen for a chat. JUSTINE WATSON CANTEEN MANAGER

JUMBLE SALE As there were many unnamed items of clothing from last term, we will be holding a small Jumble Sale on Friday 20th October and Monday 23rd October. These will be on sale in the foyer outside the office for these two days only. Money is to be handed in to the office (please have correct money if possible). Used clothing - $1.00 New clothing - $5.00 (brand new stock – from old Uniform Shop) This will be run in conjunction with the Foundation 2018 transition sessions tomorrow, as there are many smaller sizes available.
