Christmas PageantNext Saturday, at the 4:00 P.M. Christmas Eve Mass, the children of our parish will present a Christmas pageant. Fred Grimshaw is the director of the pageant. Fred is 18 years old and has been helping and/or directing this pageant for several years. He works hard, is very well organized and is extremely fair. Every child in the parish is

welcome, and the cast is chosen from among those who sign up, and also the child’s age and level of commitment. For example, the main roles need to go to the older kids, who are required to attend both practices. The younger kids who may desire the main parts will eventually get their chance. No child is turned down, everyone is welcome. Fred has a tremendous commitment and love for Holy Spirit Parish. We greatly appreciate all his hard work!

Christmas CollectionWhen Christmas day falls on a Sunday (or even on a Saturday or Monday), the parish loses a full collection. For instance, since Christmas Mass is on a Sunday this year, most people only give to the Christmas collection, and not the Sunday collection. However, our annual budget is based on a 52 week year and 52 Sunday collections. I am asking everyone to please make every effort to give to both collections. If you worship here on a regular basis, you can see how hard we try to give everyone a wonderful experience of faith. We have kind and talented visiting priests, we have a wonderful Family Mass for our younger people, we now have a handicapped accessible bathroom and the Church is always clean! We have also cut back on unnecessary expenses, have no debt and are building up our reserves so the parish will be financially stable for many years to come. We are doing all the necessary things that a responsible parish is asked to do. We have accomplished this without a capital campaign or a major fundraiser. I only ask for money when it is necessary to stay within the confines of our annual budget. We do need a healthy Christmas and Easter collection to remain financially vibrant. Please be as generous as possible.

Your Christmas card to the parishIf you haven’t already done so, please send us a Christmas card from your family. We have over 100 cards from parishioners taped in the hallway entering from the 6th street entrance (double glass doors). We receive more cards every day, don’t be left out.

We have a new BishopWe welcome and congratulate Bishop designate John Barres to our Diocese. Bishop Barres will be officially installed on Tuesday, January 31st at St. Agnes Cathedral. Please pray for him.

Next weekNext week is Christmas. This is an exciting time for everyone. Have a safe and joyous week. I look forward to seeing you here at Christmas Mass. God Bless!

Fr. Grieco

DEACON LACHLAN

At this time of year, even more than usual, we all like to look around and see where we can perhaps help someone less fortunate than ourselves. We often joke about getting the ‘Christmas spirit’….some years it takes us longer than others to get into it…..but we usually all get there in time for the great event….the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. However when we speak of getting into the Christmas spirit…. what we are doing…. whether we realize it or not….. is following more closely than usual…..the command given to us by Jesus Christ. We are working even harder than usual to feed the poor, clothe the naked, visit the sick and so on. We are following in the footsteps of Christ, which is what we do as Catholic Christians. At Holy Spirit, we have a long tradition of helping those in need….not just at Christmas of course, but at Christmas…… we usually ‘kick it up a notch’.

The volunteers who work in the social ministry office put an incredible amount of time into reaching out to families who are in need. This is only possible because of the generosity of the parishioners here at Holy Spirit. Our Christmas Giving Tree was a huge success this year once again. In this picture we see some of the volunteers sorting the packages for each needy family. More than 60 families will receive gifts this year. In addition, some families will receive a check to help them with expenses during the Christmas season. All this in addition to the food which is distributed each week throughout the year.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference have also been very busy recently. They assist

families in need with many kinds of help. One of the more important services they offer, is help in contacting the proper agencies to find out what is available. They also provide clothing and furniture when there is a need.

Recently the Wounded Warrior project made a trip to Washington D.C. with supplies collected at Holy Spirit. Fr. Grieco has given them use of a large storage area for the last two years, and this they use as a staging area for their trip to Washington. The response from the people at Holy Spirit and from New Hyde Park has been tremendous. Last week, parishioner Ed Waldron made the trip to Washington with the group. Ed has seen just about everything there is to see in life……both as a cop and as a fireman…..but he said that the welcome they received from the servicemen and women who have been wounded in so many ways….…..made his eyes ‘moist’.....(Ed doesn’t cry). He said the wounded warriors were so grateful for everything being done to assist them. Once again…… the people of Holy Spirit parish following the example of Jesus.

While all these works of mercy are so very important, so too is the assistance given to the spiritual needs of our parish family. We have a dedicated group who bring communion to the homebound on a regular basis. Sometimes the need is only temporary…..perhaps a short illness or incapacity. Very often they are bringing communion to some of our older members who are no longer able to get around. Our dedicated volunteers bring the Body of Christ from our parish Mass to our friends who are too ill or infirm to join us. What a beautiful gift…..and yet it is a gift that works two ways……those who receive the Body of Christ are receiving the greatest gift of all……but also those who bring the sacrament……. will tell you how privileged they are to be able to do so.

Enjoy the Christmas ‘spirit’…..but always remember what it means ………and who it comes from.

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

December 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians and Fellow Parishioners,

In a special way, the Advent and Christmas seasons speak directly to the hopes we have for our students in Religious Education. As we prepare for the coming of Jesus on Christmas Day, so do we prepare our students for lives that rest in the joy of Jesus and reflect him each day. The hopes for such wonderful lives for our children, should be the same hope we have for our own lives. The question is, are we living in that hope?

It is important for all of us to remember that both Jesus and Mary said “yes” to the Father and did his will. Jesus said “yes” by willingly coming down to us as man and carrying out his mission to save us and offer us eternal life. Mary said “yes” by being willing to be the Mother of Jesus, and us all, no matter the personal cost of that decision for her. Talk about love without bounds!

It is such a busy time of the year. We get all the Christmas decorations out and put them up both inside and outside the house. Then there is the gathering of the gifts, whether from Santa or bought in stores, or online, for one another. The wrapping, and the sorting, and the placing of the gifts under the tree. Not to mention, especially for the Moms, the buying of the Christmas goodies, the cooking and baking of all that delicious food, and of course, the cleaning up! Oh, and let’s not forget the visiting to family and friends. With all that said, there is still our regular schedules of work, school, sports, dance, karate and….well, you get the idea…we are just a little busy.

So, let’s all stop and take a breath. Let’s reflect on what Jesus and Mary were willing to do for us. Let’s think about the gift that has no comparison whatsoever, the gift of Jesus. Sometimes in our busy lives, it is so easy to forget that our God is always present and always approachable. In many ways, that is what Christmas tells us. That our God so loves us that he was willing to come among us and live as one of us. He knows our joys and our sufferings because he experienced them all. There is no greater gift, and like Mary, all we have to do to share in the life of Jesus is to say “yes!”

On behalf of all of us in Religious Education, have a Merry Christmas filled with the joy of the season, and a blessed New Year!

God’s Peace!

John Hogan

A NEW HOME FOR THE BLESSED MOTHER

As you can see, the Blessed Mother is now in her new home. For the last few months the statue was in a temporary spot in the sanctuary. Now we can enjoy her beauty in this new place that was specially constructed for her. Even the carpenters who did the work remarked that she deserves nothing less than a special place in our church.

The work was done for us by a local company, KPK-Rooney Construction. They are the same company who built our new sacristy last year. We used them again because their work is of the highest quality, their prices are very competitive, and they always try to help us out. Very soon their ad will appear in the back of the parish bulletin. This too is good for us because we receive a donation from the bulletin company based on the number of advertisers.

So enjoy the Blessed Mother, and during this Christmas Season don’t forget to thank her for the gift of her Son.

BULLETIN DEADLINE PRO LIFE COMMITTEE

Don’t Forget Your Baby Bottle! On the weekend of January 7th and 8th, the Holy Spirit Pro-Life Committee will be hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you know that they provide: free pregnancy tests, maternity housing with eligibility requirements, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change and to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead

abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place.

. ** The filled bottles will be collected on the weekend of January 28/29 **
