SPORTS 29 First-year head football coach Jay Foster heads into the 2006 season with a squad that has a total of 16 starters and 30 lettermen returning. e Golden Eagles are also entering their fourth season with a new stadium playing surface and night football. Clarion was 3-7 in 2005 and 1-5 in the PSAC-West. e three victories came in a record- setting four-overtime win over Kutztown (29-23), a 15-12 come-from-behind victory over Mansfield, and a 16-0 shutout win over Lock Haven. e team is hoping for an improved outcome in 2006. Team strengths for 2006? e offense has a strong line returning to anchor the scoring unit, while the defense will be strong at linebacker and in the secondary. e offense returns seven starters and 15 lettermen from a unit that averaged 245.4 yards of offense per game. e 2005 Eagles averaged 112.5 rushing yards and 132.9 passing yards per game. Coming out of spring practice, red-shirt freshman quarterback Mark Rupert has the edge at quarterback. Rupert, who has a strong passing arm, is from Knoch High and transferred from Duquesne. Slippery Rock transfer Ryan Hart had the backup spot. Also expected to vie for the starting spot are incoming freshmen Tyler Huether (Penn Trafford) and Gino Rometo (Plum). e running back spots are also up for grabs. Juniors Dan Grazier (Tyrone), 2001 All-State running back, Kyle Cathcart (Clarion Area), and converted defensive back Herb Carraway (Darlington, S.C.) are new to the position and looking for time. Sophomore Dave Murzynski (216 yards, 2 touchdowns) may be available. e Eagles have a number of new recruits who will also battle immediately. e receiving corps has talent. Tony Easterling (Erie-Cathedral Prep; 19 grabs, 229 yards, 1 td) and Jewell Stephens (Penn Hills; 16 catches, 139 yards) return, as does Pierre Odom (Trenton, N.J.; 33 receptions, 418 yards, 3 tds-2004) who sat out last season. Joe Farkas (17 catches, 234 yards, 2 tds) is penciled in to return after missing 2005, while Dane Williams (Penn Hills) and Clint Brown (Hyannis, Mass.) also add quality skills. e tight end position returns John Dominic (Hubbard, Ohio; 10 grabs, 137 yards), Matt Foradora (Brockway; 3 catches, 33 yards), and Brett Heller (Berwick). Clarion’s “O” line looks very strong up front with the return of All-Region center Zack Snyder (Akron, Ohio; Sr., 6-5, 310) and All-Region guard Eric Deliere (Washington, Pa.; Sr., 6-2, 305). Starting tackles Mike O’Brien (Minersville; Jr., 6-5, 280) and Bill Johnson (Penn Hills; Jr., 6-5, 310), along with guard Mike Melampy (Vandalia, Oh.; Jr., 6-4, 330) expect to give the Eagles a formidable front wall. Seven starters and 15 lettermen return for a tough Clarion defense that has led the PSAC in tackles for loss for the past six seasons. Clarion had 98 tfls in 2005, 110 tfls in 2004, 106 in 2003, 113 in 2002 and 102 in 2001, and 128 in 2000. Overall, the defense permitted 401 yards of offense per game, including 202 rushing yards and 199 passing yards per game. Up front, Jimmy Simmons (Jr., Huntland, Tn.; 23 hits, 8 tfls), Corey Giles (So., Cochranton; 24 stops, 4 sacks), Dejan Stevens (So., McKeesport; 7 stops, 2 tfls), Nate Griffin (So., San Antonio, Tx.; 5 stops) and Rich McCune (So., Slippery Rock/Laurel) hope to plug the front wall. Talented linebackers abound with returning All-American Matt Morris (Sr., Boiling Springs; 102 tackles, 22 tfls), Zach Gourley (Sr., McIntyre /Apollo Ridge; 78 hits, 8 tfls), Kevin Rigby (Sr., Cortland, Oh; 64 jolts, 3 tfls) and Jim McHale (So., Cortland, Oh.). Senior free safety Bo Busch (Vandalia, Oh.) returns after missing the final eight games of 2005 with an injury. He had 119 tackles, 2 ints and 4 fumbles caused in 2004 when he was a third-team AP and Football Gazette All-American. In three-plus seasons, he has 292 tackles, 10 fumbles caused, 6 ints and 6 tfls. Also anchoring the secondary will be corners Dwaon Woodard (Sr., Erie/Central; 51 stops, 2 ints, 4 blocked kicks), Quintyn Brazil (So., Pgh./Oliver; 23 tackles), Brian Edwards (So., Cincinnati, Oh.), Tom Schreppel (So., Shenandoah), and Ellijah Evans (Jr., Pgh./ Schenley; 17 hits). Erik Yonish (Jr., Bethel Park), who has seen plenty of time at quarterback the last two years, will likely be returning punts and could be used at wide receiver or defensive back. Woodard averaged 20.4 in kickoff and 8.6 per punt return in 2005. Senior placekicker Kyle Snoke (Harbor Creek/Cathedral Prep), who connected on six of seven field goals in 2004, including a 46- yarder against West Chester, returns as the placekicker, while All-PSAC punter Nick Perla (So., Irwin/Penn Trafford; 38.4 avg.) returns to boot the pigskin. CLARION NOTES: Clarion is tradition-rich in football... 27-straight non-losing seasons from 1961-87, a 45-year (1961-05) record of 261-179- 6, (59.2%) and 10 PSAC-West titles (1966, ’67, ’69, ’77, ’78, ’80, ’83, ’92, ’96, and 2000). Alumni and friends of Clarion University football, basketball, and wrestling will once again be able to hear all the action live on the Web in the 2006-2007 season, according to Sports Information Director Rich Herman. “We are very happy to announce that we will be back on the Internet with football, basketball, and wrestling broadcasts for the coming season,” said Herman. “The Internet broadcasts have been a big success for seven years and we’re pleased to be continuing with Red Zone.” Clarion sports will be broadcast in cooperation with Red Zone Media of Pittsburgh, Pa. Anyone interested in hearing the broadcasts will be able to directly access the Red Zone site on the day of the event at www.redzonemedia.com, or by going to Clarion’s Webpage at www.clarion.edu. Click on the athletics site and then click on the Red Zone logo, which will link you to Red Zone. The games will also be archived for anyone interested in listening at another time. To listen to the game live, or even after it is archived, you will need Windows “Media Player.” Any software you may need to download can be accessed from the Red Zone site, or Windows free of charge. Football, once again, will feature play-by-play announcer Mike Kalinowski and Pat Kahle, Bob Dunkle, or Dan Zangrilli as color analyst on WCCR-FM in Clarion. The wrestling broadcasts will have Rich Herman and former wrestling coach Bob Bubb on the same station. Student Sports Director Dan Zangrilli will broadcast basketball with WCUC-FM at Clarion University as the host station. Clarion initiated Internet broadcasts during the 2000 season with NCAA Division I wrestling. The wrestling broadcasts were the first of their kind in wrestling in the nation.
