CLARION AND BEYOND 14 Cosgrove Joins Clarion As Director Of Institutional Research Dr. John Cosgrove has joined Clarion in the new position of director of institutional research. He is responsible for the coordination of all university-wide institutional research to support planning activities, including strategic planning, and external reporting to governmental agencies, both state and federal. Cosgrove received his bachelor of business administration degree cum laude from St. Bonaventure University, Olean, N.Y., and went on to earn master’s degrees in policy analysis and agricultural economics, a graduate certificate in institutional research, and a doctor of philosophy degree in higher education administration, all from e Pennsylvania State University. Clarion To Host 2007 Northeast U.S. Band Convention More than 700 members of Kappa Kappa Psi, the national band honorary fraternity, and its sister sorority,Tau Beta Sigma, will converge on Clarion University in March 2007. e Clarion University chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi andTau Beta Sigma have successfully bid to host the Northwest District Convention, March 15-18, 2007. More than 40 colleges and universities from Maine to Virginia have local chapters. Nationwide, more than 400 colleges and universities have chapters. Clarion Holds Energy Conference John Boecker was the keynote speaker at the Northwest Pennsylvania Regional Energy conference held April 8 at Clarion. A speaker in the Clarion University College of Arts and Sciences Environmental Speaker Series, Boecker is an architect and designer for two of the first 15 LEED- Certified buildings in the United States. He concentrates his practice on designing high performance green buildings. Representatives of business, industry, and education heard and shared ideas about how to conserve and generate energy and move to more cost- effective and environmentally friendly alternatives. Students Interning With Defense Department In Washington, D.C. Caitlin Kordek of Bethlehem, Pa., and Trevor McGaughey of Upper Burrell, Pa., are participants in an internship through e Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars this summer. ey are among 85 people selected from 400 applicants to participate in the 10-week internship. ey were selected through the Norm Mineta Internship Immersion Program established by the U.S. Congress to provide internship opportunities within the U.S. Department of Defense and other defense-related agencies. Kordek will participate in archival and research work at the U.S. Naval Museum in Washington, D.C. McGaughey will serve as an analysis assistant at the U.S. Air Force Civilian Appellate Review Office at Andrews Air Force Base. Nulph Featured Lecturer At Video Expo West Dr. Robert Nulph (’80, M.S. ’87), assistant professor of communication, was a featured lecturer at the Video Expo West in Burbank, Calif., March 8-10. Nulph presented lectures on High Definition Video Equipment, Shooting Techniques for High Definition Video, Legal Issues in Video Production, Basic Editing Techniques, Organizing and Archiving Your Video Work, and Video for Worship. Vensel Speaks About ‘Private Equity And Project Finance’ Michelle Vensel (’89) spoke about “Private Equity and Project Finance” as part of the Clarion University College of Business Distinguished Speaker Series. She also led a discussion on how she made her career what it is today and how students can follow in her footsteps. e program is free and open to all. Vensel was managing principal of Protean Advisors. Dede Installed As PBCOHE President Dr. Brenda Dédé, assistant vice president for academic affairs, was installed as president of the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education (PBCOHE) during the PBCOHE conference, Feb. 24 in Harrisburg, Pa. As president, she plans to focus on financial stability and increasing the number and the dollar amount of the college scholarships presented, improving access to higher education for students in the commonwealth moving from K-12 to higher education, placing more minority professionals in the pipelines of higher education, and increasing and improving the programs and programming of PBCOHE. Dede will serve as president through February 2008. Students Save Local Businesses More Than $34,000 New light bulbs will save local businesses more than $34,000 after physics students studied their operations and showed how to substantially cut electricity costs by using energy-efficient light bulbs. As part of a service-learning project on electricity in General Physics II taught by Dr. John Heard and Dr. Joshua Pearce, each student performed an energy lighting audit and cost-benefit analysis for their favorite business. e students compared standard incandescent lighting with more energy- efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). 33 rd Annual Minority Recognition Dinner A keynote address from Antoinette (Parker) McDonald (’02) of Dale City, Va., and the presentation of several awards highlighted the 33 rd Annual Clarion University Minority Recognition Dinner. Eleven individual awards were presented recognizing the achievements of Clarion University students in academics, leadership, activism, athletics, and personal achievement. Award winners included: Daniel P. Roberts Award–La-Aja Wiggins, Pittsburgh, Pa.; John S. What Makes Clarion Special? Its People WeareindifficulttimesforeducationintheUnitedStates.Ourschoolsarefacedwithincreasingdemandsofaccountabilitywhilefundingdwindles.Socialillspermeateintotheclassroomsandstaffispushedtothelimitinanattempttosupplyresources,support,andhelpbeyondaclasssyllabus.Inadditiontothecurricularchallenges,westillexpectoureducationalinstitutionstobepartof,andcontributeto,thegreatercommunity. CertainlythisistrueforhighereducationandClarionUniversityhasfaceditsshareoftheseburdensandhurdles.Andwhentheseobstaclescomeatusataratethatseemsunfair,unequal,andunmanageable,wethrowourhandsupindespair,shakeourheadsisdismay,andquestion,“What’shappeningatourdearalmamater?” InearlyMay,Isawtheclearest,mostinspiringevidencethatwhat’shappeningatourdearalmamateraresomeprettywonderfulthings.AsamemberoftheAlumniBoard,ItooktheuniversityuponaninvitationtoattendthefourthannualReinhardAwardsCeremony.Withmysonattendingtheuniversityandadaughterwhoisarecentgraduate,Iknewtherewerelotsofgoodthingshappeningatthecampusbutwantedtoseethingsfirsthandformyself.

Ihaveengagedincountlessdiscussionswithfellowalumniabout“WhatmakesClarionsogreat?Whydowehaveanattachmenttoourschoolseeminglybeyondthatofalumniofothercollegesanduniversities?”I’mnotsureifwhatIsawandheardthateveningmakesClarionunique,butitmostdefinitelymakesitspecial.It’sthereasonIserveontheAlumniboardwithpride,whyIpromoteCUwheneverIcan,whyI’mpleasedandproudmydaughterisagraduateandmysonattends. Thisiscertainlynotatimetorestorbecomesatisfiedwithresultssofar.ClarionUniversityismeeting,head-on,theseeminglyoverwhelmingchallengessetinfrontofit.Farbeyondtheplaquesandpaperstheyreceived,theaccomplishmentsandworkofthesestudentsandfacultymembers–compassionate,caring,anddedicated–shouldserveasinspirationtoallofusasweliveourlives,livesrootedstronglyintheproudtraditionoftheClarionexperience.

BornNov.10,1935,inExport,hewasthesonofVincentandLydaLachmanekGrejda. Hereceivedhisbachelor’sdegreefromClarionStateTeacher’sCollegein1957wherehewasamemberofAlphaGammaPhiFraternity.Hewentontoearnamaster’sofliteraturedegreein1961anddoctoratewithdistinctionin1969withareasofspecialtyinAmericanliteratureandShakespearefromtheUniversityofPittsburgh.HereceivedtheClarionUniversityAlumniAssociationDistinguishedFacultyAwardin1985. “Ibelievethatliteratureistheideallaboratoryinwhichthestudent,throughexaminingothers,examineshimself,and,intheprocess,increaseshisownawarenessofhumancondition,therebyenhancinghiscapacitytobehumanandhumane,”Grejdasaidabouthisviewofeducation.“Ienjoyinteractingwithyoungpeople,watchingthemawakentotheuniquenessofthemselves,ofothers,andoflifeitself.” GrejdatookhisfirstteachingjobatRockyGrovein1957andthenmovedtoBethelParkHighSchoolasaseniorEnglishteacher.Hereturnedtohisalmamaterin1961asanassistantprofessor.Heservedasdepartmentchairmanfrom1971-79and1987-90.HealsoservedasinterimdeanoftheCollegeofArtsandSciencesfrom1984to1985. In1980-81,hewasselectedaseniorFulbrightlectureranddirectoroftheAmericanliteratureteamattheUniversityofBeijinginthePeoplesRepublicofChina.TheteampresentedAmericanliteratureinChinaforthefirsttimesincetherevolutionin1949.TheAmericanliteraturesessionswereattendedby52collegeanduniversityfacultymembersfrom26institutionthroughoutChina,allowingagiantstepinopeningtheculturaldoorsbetweenthetwonations. Greeks In The Spotlight TheClarionUniversityInterfraternityandPanhellenicCouncilsrecognizedseveralmembersofClarion’sGreekcommunityattheFourthAnnualReinhardAwardsceremony. Eachyear,thegoverningcouncilsrecognizeonemanandonewomanwhohaveexcelledintheareasofscholarship,communityservice,chapterinvolvement,GoverningCouncilinvolvement,andcampusinvolvementduringthepastacademicyear.Theawardsarealsoaccompaniedbyscholarshipstotalingapproximately$500foreachrecipient. SelectedasGreekManoftheYearisJustinDandoyofPhiDeltaTheta.HeisfromButler,Pa.,andparticipatedinafashionshowtobenefitOperationClarionCares,workedtheAmericanRedCrossBlooddrives,andservedasbothanIFCofficer,chapterofficer,andstudentsenator.HewasrecognizedbytheNortheastGreekLeadershipAssociationasaGreekLeaderofDistinctionand,mostrecently,waselectedpresidentofClarionUniversity’sStudentSenate. TheGreekWomanoftheYearisKelsiWilcoxofSigmaSigmaSigma.SheisfromRussell,Pa.,andalsoservedasanofficerinherchapterandthegoverningcouncil.SheisamemberofGAMMA(GreeksAdvocatingfortheMatureManagementofAlcohol),isacertifiedPeertoPeerEducator,holdsofficeinAlphaPhiOmegaNationalServiceFraternity,andisamemberoftwohonorsocieties.HercommunityserviceinvolvementisextensiveandshewasthedrivingforcebehindtheSpring2006GreekServiceDay. AlishiaAzzarelloofSigmaSigmaSigma.SheisfromMonroeville,Pa.,andhasattendedmanycouncilsponsoredeventsduringthepastfouryears.InadditiontoGreekserviceprojects,shehasparticipatedinmultipleSaturdayServiceDaysandtheClarionDanceMarathon.WithintheGreekcommunity,shewasaleadingadvocateforthecouncil’sinvolvementintheFall2005NationalHazingPreventionWeek.Shehasheldseveralchairpositionswithinherchapterandistheimmediatepastpresident. Lastyear,thecouncilsdevelopedthe“LivingtheRitualAward.”Theawardismeanttorecognizeafraternitymanorsororitywomanwhoembracesthevaluesoftheirfraternity/sororityandwhosedailyconductmakesthemarolemodeltotheirfellowGreeks. TheawardwaspresentedtoAmandaBlackhurstofDeltaZeta.SheisfromErie,Pa.,andistheimmediatepastpresidentofOrderofOmega.ShewasrecentlynamedDeltaZeta’sRegionIIIOutstandingSeniorandhasacceptedatravelingconsultantpositionwithDeltaZeta. TheOfficeofCampusLifealsorecognizedthefollowingchaptersforattaininga“SilverRating”ontheChapterAssessmentProgram:DeltaPhiEpsilon,EpsilonOmicronChapter;DeltaZeta,EpsilonThetaChapter;PhiDeltaTheta,PennsylvaniaXiChapter;PhiMuAlpha,OmicronMuChapter;andPhiSigmaSigma,GammaGammaChapter.TheChapterAssessmentProgram,developedinSpring2005aspartoftheGreekPlan,isacomprehensiveassessmenttoolthatreviewsallfacetsoftheoperationsoftherecognizedfraternitiesandsororitiesoncampus.

Fraternity And Sorority Scholars Honored ClarionUniversity’sOrderofOmegachapterrecentlyrecognizedtheacademicachievementsofmembersoftheGreekCommunity.Onehundredandelevenstudents,representingthemajorityofthecurrentlyrecognizedfraternityandsororitychaptersoncampus,werehonoredatthefourthannualGreekScholarshipBanquetinChandlerDiningHall.Thestudentseitherhaveaminimumcumulative3.2qualitypointaverage(QPA)orattainedatleast3.2QPAduringeachoftheprevioustwosemesters. ThekeynoteaddresswasdeliveredbyLisaBria(’04),analumnaofDeltaZeta.ShesharedhowherClarionUniversityeducationandexperiencesasamemberoftheGreekcommunitypreparedhertoworkforhersororityasaChapterConsultantandpursueamaster’sdegreeatDuquesneUniversity.SheclosedbystressingtheimportanceofdevelopingastrongsenseofcommunitywithinthefraternitiesandsororitiesoncampusandchallengedthoseassembledtoseethebigpictureofGreeklife,byrealizingthattheirorganizationstranscendClarionUniversityandlinkthemtoanationwidesupportsystem. Dandoy Named ‘Greek Leader Of Distinction’ JustinDandoy,ClarionUniversity’sInterfraternityCouncilVicePresidentandmemberofPhiDeltaThetaFraternity,wasoneof10studentsrecognizedbytheNortheastGreekLeadershipAssociation(NGLA)asaGreekLeaderofDistinctionatitsannualconferenceinHershey,Pa.
