The Fixers Organized by Kate Sopko (Cleveland, OH) Opening reception: Friday, May 20, 6 – 9 PM On view at SPACES: May 20 – July 21, 2016 Cleveland, OH, April 8, 2016— During the Republican National Convention in July, the 50,000+ visitors expected in Cleveland will spend much of their time in the city’s compact downtown. The Fixers asks what Clevelanders would tell political decision-makers about our city’s challenges and assets, and the impact of the political process here, if given the chance. Artist Kate Sopko has organized filmmakers Robert Banks, Angela Beallor, Chelsie Corso, Tom Laffay, Elizabeth Press and Paul Sobota, to shoot a series of short films that follow Cleveland “fixers”— residents who are invested in urban vitality and social equity in Cleveland. For Kate Sopko, a Cleveland fixer is someone who has a stake in the future of the city, and who has been a part of its past. These Cleveland fixers will tell us their stories about what it's like to ride public transit, young people addressing violence in their neighborhoods, efforts to increase healthy food access in Cleveland's food deserts, and much more. The view of Cleveland will be rendered complete by showing all the sides Cleveland, from the polished downtown to the gritty lived in streets that surround it. Four short films generated from the Fixers tours will be released serially leading up to the RNC, inviting local and national audiences into a public dialogue about political priorities in America’s most economically distressed major city.
