SOLAS Training Manual has scope for improvement as not completely ship specific. The below to be included / amended in the manuals.1) Details of Hoses lengths given are erroneous 2) Emgy escape routes from E/Room need to be included3) Details of ship specific SCBA ( Scott type ) need to be included4) Scavenge space fire fighting systems need to be included5) Instructions for EEBD (Current is Sabre ELSA) to be included

SOLAS II-2 REG 15.2.3.3 Training manuals - The training manual, which may comprise several volumes, shall contain the instructions and information required in paragraph 2.3.4 in easily understood terms and illustrated wherever possible. Any part of such information may be provided in the form of audio-visual aids in lieu of the manual.

SOLAS V REG 35.3 Training manual and on-board training aids- The training manual, which may comprise several volumes, shall contain instructions and information, in easily understood terms illustrated wherever possible, on the life-saving appliances provided in the ship and on the best methods of survival. Any part of such information may be provided in the form of audio-visual aids in lieu of the manual.

SOLAS V REG 36 Instructions for on-board maintenanceInstructions for on-board maintenance of life-saving appliances shall be easily understood, illustrated wherever possible, and, as appropriate, shall include the following for each appliance:.1 a checklist for use when carrying out the inspections required by regulation 20.7;.2 maintenance and repair instructions;.3 schedule of periodic maintenance;.4 diagram of lubrication points with the recommended lubricants;.5 list of replaceable parts;.6 list of sources of spare parts; and.7 log for records of inspections and maintenance.

The INSTRUCTIONS FOR REVIEW apply to;1. LSA/ FFA Training Manuals.2. LSA/ FFA Maintenance Manual.

The Date in the header of the manuals needs to be changed to the date the manual has been Reviewed / submitted to the office for approval.

The revision number in the header should remain the same as in the model plans sent from the office.

List of Contents The Date needs to be changed to

the date the manual has been Reviewed/ submitted to the office for approval.

If only a section has been Reviewed/ submitted to the office for approval, then only the date for that section needs to be changed.

The Contents need to be made Ship Specific, if any Equipment/ Item is not required on board as per the approved plans then the name of that Equipment/ Item should be deleted and replaced by “Intentionally Left Blank”.

Similarly that section in the manual should also be removed.

Initially all the Sections of the Manuals; Should be reviewed and made ship specific wrt the Equipment on

Board, instructions for its use, inspection and maintenance as per Manufacturer’s instructions.

The section for the Equipment which is not on board should be removed from the manual.

Subsequently When any Equipment on board is changed/ replaced for example “Pyrotechniques, fire extinguishers etc” then that section of the manual should be reviewed, updated and sent to the office for approval.

LSA/ FFA Maintenance Manual is further divided into 2 Parts;

1. LSA/ FFA Maintenance Plan;

2. LSA / FFA Maintenance Record

LSA/ FFA Maintenance Plan Provides a complete checklist of all;• LSA/ FFA equipment on board, • Their particulars, • Their location, • And detailed maintenance instructions.

Each equipment listed in the plan has two sections:1.Details of Equipment including make, type, serial number.2.Maintenance Instructions all relevant manufacturers’ instructions on maintenance and repair.

LSA / FFA Maintenance Record provides a complete record of • inspection, • maintenance, • any non conformities noted, • action taken and completion dates.The Maintenance Record has 3 sections for each LSA/ FFA Equipment.1.Inspection / Maintenance Record.Where applicable, weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc, signature records are provided. As mentioned in the plan, the responsible officer will inspect each equipment carefully at intervals given and sign the record.

In case Flag State requirements of Maintenance Schedule intervals are more stringent than those listed in the manual, then the plan should be modified accordingly and flag state guidelines and adhered to.

2.Work Done.A standard work done sheet is provided which should be inserted at the end for each equipment. It is to be filled for any work done, any defects noted, date rectified, any spares ordered, date rcvd, etc. Additional work done sheets may be inserted as required. Certificates and service engineer’s records to be inserted in the relevant Equipment Maintenance record section.

3.Spare Parts.An inventory of replaceable parts is to be as per the form provided. The list of Spares required to be carried on board may be taken from the equipment manufacturers’ manual. Quantity remaining on Board (ROB) may be filled in pencil. Each time an item is consumed, it must be recorded immediately.

An inventory check of all spare parts must be taken once in 3 months.
