A Message from our Pastor
Dear Parishioners, One of the most revered beliefs for us as Catholic Christians is the preeminence of the Sacred Liturgy, especially as it is celebrated in the Eucharist. In teaching about this most profound mystery, the Church has traditionally employed a rich language that consists of biblical images and metaphors, theological definitions, philosophical concepts, poetic expressions, hymn texts, artwork, ritual and various cultural elements. All of these are needed to help us appreciate the great gift of the Eucharist, given to us by the Lord Jesus himself on the night before he died. Since the earliest days of the apostles, Christians have maintained that not only is Christ truly present in the Eucharistic food when it is received in the context of Lord’s Supper, but that his divine presence remains in the consecrated bread and
wine. This belief immediately gave rise to the practice of reserving the sacred elements and in taking them to those who could not be present at the liturgy, usually on account of sickness or imprisonment. As the Church grew, it became necessary to design laws, norms, and directives as to how the Eucharistic Food, frequently referred to as the Blessed Sacrament, was to be reserved, received, and taken to the sick and homebound. Such legislation was never intended to create inordinate restriction or liturgical elitism, but was deemed necessary in order to foster proper reverence and to safeguard belief in what we know as the “Real Presence” of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. This remains true to this day. The Code of Canon Law is very specific as to how the Sacrament is to be cared for and who may administer it. It is always the responsibility of the bishop to maintain oversight of anything pertaining to the Eucharist. He in turn entrusts much of this responsibility to priests and pastors. They in turn may delegate Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to take Communion to the sick and homebound. I share all of this in order to clarify some confusion regarding the longstanding ministry that we have here at St. Joan of Arc pertaining to Communion that is taken to the homebound. While I wholeheartedly approve of this noble custom, I find it necessary to remind our parishioners of the required protocol that needs to be observed.
1. As pastor, I need to know who is taking the Blessed Sacrament from our church and where it is being
taken. I have delegated our parish nurse, Sandra Razka, as the coordinator of this Ministry of Care. No parishioners may take Communion to anyone unless they have cleared this with Sandra.
2. Only people who have been officially approved by the Diocese as Communion Ministers may perform
this task. Permission from the Diocese is needed to serve at a particular parish. We are not at liberty to use Communion Ministers from other parishes to serve our parishioners without permission from the pastor.
3. No Communion Minister may offer to take the Sacrament to anyone unless Sandra Razka is aware of
this first. 4. No Communion Minister may independently ask another Minister to take Communion to anyone unless
Sandra Razka is aware of this.
5. No parishioners, including the sick or homebound person, may independently request Communion from a Minister unless this has first been approved by either Sandra Razka or me.
6. When Communion is taken by an approved minister to an approved home, the official ritual for the
Administration of Holy Communion is to be used.
While these directives may appear onerous, I can assure you of their necessity by any number of examples of abuse that, while not deliberately intended, still result in actions and practices that can very quickly erode our belief in the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. I am hopeful that these clarifications will help to deepen reverence and appreciation for this most Wondrous Sacrament – the Panis Angelicus (Bread of Angels). Blessings,
