ST LAWRENCE was born at Brindisi Italy and at the age of sixteen entered the Capuchin Franciscan community at Verona At the University of Padua he made rapid progress in his studies of philosophy and theology and showed a remarkable facility for languages He mastered Greek Latin Hebrew French Spanish German and Bohemian and acquired a wide knowledge of the Scriptures After his ordination he labored as a domestic missionary and was called to Rome by Clement VIII to work for the con-version of the Jews

In 1598 he was sent with eleven other Capuchins to establish Capuchin communities throughout Germany and Austria which were threatened by Lutheranism at that time While in the imperial realm the fame of his holiness wisdom and administrative ability led the Emperor Rudolf III to appoint him to organize the Catholic princes against the invading Turks At the Battle of Stuhlweissenburg though the Christians were outnumbered four to one St Lawrence roused the low spirits of the soldiers with a powerful oration mounted a horse and rode before the army with a crucifix held high The Turks were repulsed and Europe was saved

At the successful conclusion of his other German projects the Saint returned to seek seclusion in Italy only to find that he had been elected the Minister General of the Order He died in 1619 at Lisbon Portugal while on a mission to present the grievances of the people of Naples to their sovereign King Philip III of Spain Though he was a very active person St Lawrence was also a man of prayer as well as of deep learning He was canonized in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII and in 1960 he was made a Doctor of the Church

PRAYER God for the glory of Your name and the salvation of souls You favored St Lawrence Your Priest with the spirit of wisdom and fortitude Grant that in the same spirit we may recognize our obligations and with his help carry them out Amen

ST LAWRENCE OF BRINDISI Priest and Doctor of the ChurchmdashJuly 21

My Dear Parishioners

Today we arrive at the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time in our observance of the Lordrsquos Day The Old Testament scripture and

the Gospel for today bring to our attention the one who is called by the Lord and deputized to speak and act in His name The

prophet Amos is sent off to testify to the Lord before the people of Israel Amos was not schooled for such work but rather

had an occupation which was not related to such a noble calling and therefore felt unworthy Nonetheless God had chosen

him and by His grace equipped him with all that he needed to do the task

The Gospel reading tells us that the Lord Jesus sent out the Apostles with virtually nothing but the instructions to GO The

Apostles preach and teach in Jesus Name they drive ldquoout many demons and they anointed with oil many who were sick and

cured themrdquo Like Amos the Twelve did not receive any formal training in missiology but only the divine directive to GO

The Lord provided so that they might minister in His name for it was not human frailty but the awesome power of God

which worked wonders

Both of these accounts show us that the Lord uses people the least expected to preach and minister in His Name Todayrsquos

Scripture readings remind us of the divine call We know that this call is especially made to men and women who are being

invited to serve in holy orders or consecrated life We pray that these will have the courage to respond affirmatively as did

the prophets and Apostles In addition to these all the baptized are called by the Lord to minister in His Name We are

equipped for this service because werdquohellip were sealed with the promised Holy Spirithelliprdquo at Baptism and Confirmation At the

conclusion of every Mass we are told to GO and do this work

As all of us are taking some time during these summer days to slow down go on vacation etc let us take some time to con-

sider how we can respond more positively to the Lordrsquos call to minister in His Name Here in our parish it may be by serving

as a catechist serving in one of our liturgical ministries volunteering for some odd jobs around the church and so much

more God is calling YOU to serve and not to be served We all need to answer His call before itrsquos too late

God bless you
